Climax was one of the scariest films ive ever witnessed, i both hated it and loved it at the same time. There are so many great A24 movies but The Witch, Ex Machina, Moonlight, Hereditary, Uncut Gems, The Lighthouse , Everything Everywhere and Lady Bird are all some of my fav movies ever.

The Lighthouse is easily one of my favorite films ever made. Mind you, I haven't seen most of the other films in here and I am very biased because it has Willem Dafoe.

@@defnotblu9894 don't worry, it's very simple, Ephraim's real name is Thomas which also happens to be the name of the other lighthouse keeper. I'll be referring to them by their last names; Wake and Winslow. Winslow was previously a lumberjack, which was supposedly an excellent job and he had a gay lover. However, Winslow hates that he is gay so one day he decides to murder the shit out of his lover and commit identity theft. He takes the name Ephraim Winslow and begins looking for new work to avoid getting arrested for his crimes. He ends up becoming a lighthouse keeper's assistant. Wake, the lighthouse keeper, is traumatized from his previous assistant becoming obsessed with the light from the lighthouse and then murdering him because he was an annoying little shit who wouldn't shut up about the goddamn light. So both men are murderers and also raging alcoholics, hijinks ensue. Winslow begins experiencing hallucinations most likely brought on by PTSD from literally killing a man. He also continues trying to deny his gayness by jerking off to the mermaid statue. The stress starts eating away at Winslow, so he decides to beat the ever living fuck out of a seagull that's been annoying him for weeks on end. Winslow spills his beans and Wake is very displeased with that information. They barely survive a storm that destroys the light keepers cabin and Winslow finds that Wake had been docking his pay the whole time. He snaps and tries to bury Wake alive, but fails and then Wake tries to kill him with an axe. He also fails and Winslow fucking kills him for being such a noob. Fed up with everything, he goes up to the lighthouse to see the light that he had begun to be entranced by. Upon seeing the light, he realizes that it's literally just a giant fucking lightbulb and all his struggle and curiosity was for nothing. After busting a lung laughing, he accidentally slips on the ladder and falls down the staircase. Even though his guts are pouring out of him, he tries crawling to shore for help but realizes he won't be able to make it. As he lays dying, a bunch of seagulls decide to pick at his corpse as punishment for killing their brother in wings.

I watched so nany of these before knowing A24 was a "thing", somehow. But I agreed with most of your reviews, and you really expressed your ideas so well. Definitely got a sub from me.

Lean on Pete is a masterpiece to me, but I love Andrew Haigh as a director. It Comes At Night was a victim of false advertising, everyone bitches that 'nothing comes at night!', well yeah, hallucinations, nightmares, paranoia, fear, hopelessness, all come at night. Re-watching it at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown really accentuated how effective it is. And the use of shifting aspect ratios is perfection, it's not my favorite TES film (that would go to Waves), it's still so well-acting and despairing that it still haunts me now. it's also deceptively straightforward, but once you put it through the pov of a character who may or may not be succumbing to the infection or his own mind, it makes it way better.

I was hoping to hear your thoughts on Pearl, but I guess you haven’t seen it yet? I’m just starting to get into “non-genre” films, but for now I’ll just rank my top 5 horror movies from A24:
    1. The VVitch
    2. The Killing of a Sacred Deer
    3. Midsommar
    4. Pearl
    5. The Lighthouse
(And the first 4 are probably my top 4 horror movies of the 21st century at this point)

How could you leave Room off the list? Brie Larson was the first person to win an acting Oscar in an A24 film.

Just watched The Lobster and it changed my life. I was making fun of it at first of how awkward and cringy it was but it turned out beautifully and surreal.

I am very biased to everything everywhere all at once as I haven’t experienced so much emotions for a movie like that before and the way it presented inter generational trauma. So I’m surprised you just placed under Groovey… maybe we differ on Emotional Intelligence….

Under The Skin and Climax were both mid to me, Climax was pretty annoying, so overdramatic and unrealistic, saying this as someone whos been "experienced" as Hendrix has said.
