Aw holy shit it’s that kid who did the Lego stuff for Spiderverse! It’s a pleasure to interact with you on the internet!
I find it funny that an animator in a nearly billion dollar Spider Man movie is this excited about being featured in a UA-cam video made by a talking Coconut Crab
@mr.mister3960 You’re telling me that you WOULDN’T be thrilled at the prospect of being featured in a UA-cam video made by a talking coconut crab?
I love how Nolan isn’t tied down to a specific genre or style. He can spend two decades making some of the best action sequences in cinematic history and then suddenly make a movie comprised almost entirely of people talking in rooms just because he feels like it.
Well, he does have an identifiable style. He loves realism and non-linear storytelling. And there are many genres he has yet to dive into. I think the most versatile popular director is Steven Spielberg: Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, ET, The Color Purple, Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, etc...
If Schaffrillas doesn’t use the Tim Curry “I’m going to the ONE place that hasn’t been corrupted by capitalism… SPACE!” line for Interstellar’s placement, I will be quite disappointed.
EDIT: I am quite disappointed
SPAYCE!
I was disappointed he didn’t use Yesterday by The Beatles for Only Yesterday in the Ghibli video

The fact he was able to get General Audiences to watch Oppenheimer, a movie where its just 3hrs of people talking, is bonkers.
Tbh I think part of that was definitely due to Barbenheimer, but yea Nolan did a great job with that film.
as a monogatari fan, oppenheimer dialogue is amazing
To be fair, it's 3 hours of people talking, and a massive explosion.

My sister still gives me shit for crying at The Dark Knight Rises' ending. I was 9 at the time. Imagine showing a 9 year old Batman, a hero they like, fucking dying.

I cried at the end of Spider-Man 3 as a kid so don’t blame you lol
That was a lot of people with Endgame tbf
My father cried at the ending. I thought it was a nice end to the trilogy.
The thing about The Prestige is that the first watch will blow you away when you learn the twist, but the second watch will blow you away *because* you know the twist. There's so much packed into that film that you find something new every time you watch it, but for the first watch you don't actually need to pick up on any of it to enjoy the story and that's the craziest part to me.
Everytime you rewatch, it's a fun exercise to try to figure out (SPOILERS) which Bale is which in each scene.
Honestly, the fact that Nolan’s worst works can still be considered like 6/10 is a testament to how great of a filmmaker he is. Even when he misses, he doesn’t really miss.
A truly great filmmaker can take even the weakest and most underwhelming script imaginable and turn into something that's impressive from a technical perspective and mostly quite fun to watch
The lowest score he gave one of these on Letterboxd is 5/10 and that was for the bottom 3
That's how most every great director is. Spielberg, Scorsese, Kubrick, all of them had "misses" but you can tell that someone knew something.
Nice to see you clownpuncher

Petition for Schaff to rank all of Guillermo Del Toro's movies, to me he's one of those directors that when I hear he's directing I'm immediately excited for the movie.
Nah he needs to do the M. Night Shyamalan ranking for a REAL auteur.
Sure, right after the John Ford and Kurosawa rankings
I would love one but I think only to hear Schaff talk about hellboy
Sam Raimi would be another interesting one given the variation in different genres and quality across his movies but also the fact they all share his unique style in some way or another.
Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans would be a frustrating and sad last place there.

Ok so the reason The Dark Knight Rises feels so underwhelming is because originally Joker was going to have a massive role in it. Obviously after Heath Ledger’s death that plan was scrapped. Nolan had pretty much no passion for making a third film but was forced by the studio
Is there any meaningful proof of such claims? Information of the time was that there was no third movie seriously planned, and ending of Dark Knight rather reinforces that when compared with B.Begins with obvious Joker cliffhanger.
@@ReichLife Yeah, it was my understanding WB kinda strong-armed Nolan into making Rises via his contract and so he kinda rushed Rises out hence it not being up to snuff with his other works. Tenet has no such excuse.
@@CouchSpud91 Same feeling here. While Ledger death more or less impacted Nolan's approach towards third movie, overall picture showcases there never actual desire to make one, with only contract and/or promises for funding of other projects which were to follow TDKR actually made Nolan direct third movie. And yeah, while I consider Nolan to be easily one of the best directors of our times, he is hardly perfect. Didn't even bother with Tenet since it didn't sound appealing to me, all while Dunkirk or Oppenheimer while great movies, painfully suffer from Nolan's stubborn obsession of avoiding CGI.
@@ReichLife Sadly I'm right with Schaff in that I don't like war movies so Dunkirk is a skip for me as well, but I love all of his other works (I even enjoy Rises despite its faults) and really need to see Oppenheimer sometime.

That film gets dismissed way too easily
Like the opening sequence is legendary
Nolan didn’t want to make TDKR, he only did it so that he could make his own movie with no interference
Yep. I remember that one scene where Batman responds with 'No, I came back to stop you.' to Bane when he confronts him at the climax. That was such a missed opportunity to dive deeper. It's also wild how Oppenheimer kinda had a direct sequel later that year, focusing more on the Japanese perspective on the ramifications of the bomb ending World War 2, and that the chain reaction that'd destroy the entire world.... ended up being a giant radioactive dinosaur.
If you wanna do another Japanese double feature with Oppenheimer then watch Grave of the Fireflies right after, will definitely fill you with a hopeful spirit and a positive outlook on humanity and war!

About the Inception ending, it turns out that in an interview a while back, Michael Caine stated that during the production, Nolan told him that any scene his character is in is in reality and not a dream. And since Caine’s character is there at the very end bringing Cobb to his kids, the ending was in fact a reality.

You can find other ways to learn about cinema, specially with your own experience. Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Charlie Chaplin or Myiazaki also never did.
@cortomaltese5206 was film school a common thing in Chaplin's time? Even if it was, he did have plenty of experience in theater

My favorite thing about the ending of Inception is that it doesn't matter whether the top fell over or not (which it did). What matters is that Cobb no longer cares about whether or not it's reality and just goes to see his kids.

The way I view tenet is that it’s a character study using a convoluted Christopher Nolan plot. Most movies are centred around knowing a character or getting invested. Having the main character be called “Protagonist” does the exact opposite. And for me, I was still hooked with the plot and the action scenes were enough to keep me locked in.
Tenet's the only movie that I've watched in theaters, and during covid as well. Interstellar is probably my favorite Sci-fi movie of all time. Especially since Nolan had an actual scientist on board to make it realistic. He even had him create the most realistic image of a black hole at the time.
All valid film criticism aside, the bomb in the dark knight rises would not cause a deadly amount of radiation to the city for two big reasons,
1- it’s said to be a 1megaton nuke and anything over 700 kilotons blasts most of the radiation into the upper atmosphere
2-It’s a fusion based bomb which hypothetically would have less than percent of the radiation caused by a fisson bomb aka every nuclear bomb in real life

Finally watched Memento last year and can't recommend it enough. It's one of those movies where the confusing plot structure is legit justified and actually makes sense for the movie.
The movie playing in reverse order does such a good job at putting us in Leonard's shoes and helps us understand his short term memory loss. We're forced to experience his condition every time a new scene begins, because we have no idea what happened just happened before.
Bro is Joe Biden too old to bee president?
Only the color scenes are in reverse order.
Honestly it was waaaaayyyy darker than I thought it would be. I'm not sure how soon I'll rewatch it just because I found the ending to be such a dark corner of human consciousness.
I cannot stress enough that this is NOT just a fun gimmick like it sounds, it is 100% necessary for the flow of the plot and works perfectly.

The first time I saw Interstellar was (unfortunately) not in a theater, but on a 4K disc at home. I wasn't able to get the full cinema experience, but I did have a cheap 5.1 surround system and the audio on that disc blew me away. I could put my hand in front of one of the rear speakers and that thing felt like an air conditioner with how much sound it had pumping through it. My dad came home from work while I was watching it, and came up to my room to see what all the noise was. He ended up getting so engrossed in the movie that he just stood there in the doorway and watched the last 45 mins or so with me, without having seen the rest of it. I know a lot of people dislike it, but the dark knight rises is one my favourite batman movies and probably my favourite of the trilogy.
I love Bane, genuinely one of the most unique versions of him, and I absolutely just can't stop quoting him.
The message Batman learns to strive at your lowest.
The genuine threat I felt seeing Gotham reduce to chaos.
Yes it's flawed, but that made it memorable for me
But that's my stupid opinion, you all can chastise me now;)

Agreed, and it has so many good emotional beats. The prison scene is amazing and the ending with Alfred is so emotionally charged it may be one of the best endings ever.
I agree. I don’t like it more than The Dark Knight but I like it much more than Batman Begins. I just rewatched them all a couple days ago and, yeah, it’s messy, convoluted, and kinda dumb… but I love it!
I disagree with James in that I think it is pretty damn well paced and keeps me gripped. I also like the scale and the stakes to the story, despite the bomb being dumb.
The climb from the pit is still hype to this day, you can't deny that.

I agree, whilst the Dark Night is good, I didn’t feel super intimidated by the joker as his motive of chaos…wasn’t that interesting. Bane’s philosophy is far more interesting

The music alone in interstellar can bring me to tears, and I don't even know what emotion I'm crying to other than pure awe.
One of the things I will always respect about Christopher Nolan is always making everything as real as possible with little to none cgi, he even said in an interview that one of the reasons why he mostly uses practical effects rather than cgi is because it was more fun that way and watching some behind the scenes on how certain things were created made me respect him even more on how impressive he could do it as practical as possible.
He still uses tons of cgi. Basically Every movie marketed as "no cgi" does. They might use physical props, too, and those are definitely very useful, but no cgi basically just means invisible cgi
Too bad he went to far lately with this approach. Dunkirk and Oppenheimer visually suffered from this obsession of his of avoiding CGI.
My ranking (I haven't seen Following)
1. Memento (10/10) Christopher Nolan's masterpiece, one of the cleverest movies you'll ever watch.
2. The Dark Knight (10/10) An all-time modern classic and the second-best superhero movie ever made (after The Incredibles, obviously).
3. Inception (9/10) A stunning, monolithic achievement of blockbuster filmmaking with a compelling story to boot. Aside from a little too much exposition, a whole-hearted success.
4. Dunkirk (9/10) Cinema in its purest form, this is a visceral and masterful technical tour-de-force, though some won't gel with its lack of character development.
5. Oppenheimer (8.5/10) An explosive and masterful historical epic, although the Florence Pugh subplot is pretty terrible.
6. The Dark Knight Rises (8/10) Plot holes and all this is a gripping example of superhero films at their most bad-ass and thoughtful.
7. Batman Begins (7.5/10) This origin story does its job very well indeed, although it's a glum watch and it can be dull.
8. Interstellar (7/10) A technical masterpiece that starts out flawlessly before losing focus in the second half. The entire Matt Damon subplot should've been cut.
9. The Prestige (6.5/10) Held back by excessively unlikable characters, The Prestige is an uneven film that eventually arrives at a flawless third act.
10. Insomnia (6/10) A mediocre and soullessly grim detective thriller, though too well-acted and well-made to be called bad.
11. Tenet (4.5/10) One of the worst-written Hollywood films in recent memory, this is Christopher Nolan's biggest failure as a director.
If I had a nickel for every time Phillip Phillips was in a Schafrillas video, I’d have one nickel. Please do it again so I can make the 2 nickels joke.
7:15 Schaff I really appreciate this part because as one of the few people who loves TDKR, I know it's got problems, but it's nice to be able to look past them and enjoy something regardless. It's even nicer for someone to say, "yeah you can like this thing, even if I don't like it, I'm not gonna make fun of you for liking it."
The Dark Knight Rises at least gives Batman a fitting ending. There isn't a lot of stories where Batman actually reformed Gotham for the better and passed on the mantle. DKR will be special for that
Years later it indeed becomes apparent how good TDKR ending is. Mere comparison with other biggest batman series showcases that, when in Animated he turned out into old hermit with his crusade being basically meaningless, or Arkham games where ending was quite bitter sweet. Or comics with never ending story. Nolan conclusion indeed looks great.
How did Man know the Bone was sponsored by squarespace? The all in platform to build your website! Is he a UA-cam addict or something?!
After watching all of his films multiple times, I ironically found Tenet to be my favorite. And I think many other channels are starting to give it the recognition it deserves. It grew on me. Much like 2001, Nolan removes grounding comforts of things like character background and the necessity to instantly connect with the audience - to make a masterpiece. It truly is the most Nolany of all his films. It just feels like the art he wanted to make regardless of what others thought.
If you want a suggestion on which director to do next, I think Martin Scorsese would be appropriate
Killers of the Flower Moon came out last year just like Oppenheimer, Marty has been on people’s minds thanks to his Internet content on TikTok and Letterboxd and (most importantly) HE’S PUFF DADDY!!!!
i spread thy buttocks if you don't know thy way
I would like to see a David Fincher Ranking, but oh boy, Martin Scorsese deserved it betterl
Honestly, either Martin Scorsese or Robert Zemeckis would be excellent choices. I’d love to see him rank both.
Others that would be great to do are David Fincher, Denis Villenueve, Tim Burton, and Quentin Tarantino (though I’d wait until his final film comes out).
He mentioned M. Night Shyamalan, but that’s… not a good idea honestly.
Personally, I would like to see him rank the Zack Snyder films. Knowing that he talked about generally bad animation studios in the past, I think it would be fair if he talked about generally bad directors as well
i've thought about rob reiner but i don't think there's any surprises in ranking his films to be interesting

Here's a Hot take for you: I like watching Schaffrillas talk about stuff he enjoys more than yelling at fictional characters to shoot people with a dehydration gun.
I'M SO PUMPED FOR THIS!!!! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!
Using a non-linear structure for a video about a guy who's whole deal is that his movies have a non-linear structure is honestly really creative.
the only thing bad about Oppenheimer is that Einstein never stuck out his tongue
Editing in this video was great! Nice job

Anyone else notice the random Tony Soprano image in the thumbnail 😂😂😂
I hope he only talks about The Sopranos in non-sequiturs.
We shouldn't have watched his Tony Soprano iceberg video all the way through, we went too far and now he'll follow us everywhere until -
ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTONY

oh boy new schaffrillas video cant wait to see his thoughts on my personal favorite nolan film, tenet
I saw Interstellar in theaters recently during a rerelease near me. Interstellar was already a movie I loved and had rewatched a few times, but seeing it in theaters completely changed the experience. The sound design immersed me like I couldn't imagine and I would honestly say that it was the biggest takeaway from a movie theater experience. If you ever have the chance to see this movie in theaters or at least on a big screen with quality surround sound, you need to.
This is a bot comment.
I genuinely don’t even know if there’s actually a “bad” Christopher Nolan movie.
Tenet and tdkr are definitely bad Christopher Nolan movies
@@gray4675 if those are your “worst” movies, then your definitely a great director.
@@benbuono6639 Yeah, they're not that bad.
@@gray4675 Tenet is deffinetly not a bad movie in any sense lol
@@deleetiusproductions3497 I think the main thing about those movies is that they have merit to them even though they're bad.
Bane is a hired gun, basically does the same thing in the movie except stick around for the nuke since he doesn’t have a death wish. Batman picks up on this with his mannerisms, his words, as well as subtle things like having the intelligence to pull it of but not the information or motivation to do so. He figures out it’s Talia before her plan works, having Catwoman steal the key or something. There’s a twist villain as well as a subversion of it, connecting the first movie with Ras comments about family and how a older Batman is smarter and stronger. He subdues Bane before he can get away, and basically can clown on Talia by laying out her entire plan out to her and at the end tells her she’s already lost. Why would he relieve the entire plan if it wasn’t already stopped?
Not you calling barry keoghan the banshees of inisherin kid
8:38 To this day I can't believe Bane was just flicked out of the movie like a silly little crab. I waited in shock watching the rest of the movie in theaters for him to make a surprise come back.
i got to hear schaffrillas say "BUT HEY THATS JUST A THEORY", my life is complete
This video began with us having many similar takes (except with flipped opinions on rises vs begins) but the ending diverged quite a lot. Here's my list:
1. The Prestige
2. Interstellar
3. Oppenheimer
4. The Dark Knight
5. Memento
6. Inception
7. The Dark Knight Rises
8. Insomnia
9. Following
10. Tenet
11. Batman Begins
12. Dunkirk
You mentioned in your video that you'd only seen The Prestige the one time for when you made this video, and i swear to you - you absolutely must watch it again. Every single time i watch it again i just get sooo blown away, its incredible. The best part is watching it with new people who havent seen it before, and talking about it afterwards. I will die on the hill that The Prestige is Nolan's best film, its just SO good and expertly crafted and i eat it up every time
12: Following (A draft of something better. It’s like the MK8 Rainbow Road as a movie)
11: Insomnia (Omg! That’s the genie! As a murderer? And the guy from Jack and Jill? Wow!)
10: Dunkirk (The Joker, Scarecrow, Bane, and Harry Styles in one movie that isn’t TDK trilogy. Is this just The Dark Knight 4?)
9: Oppenheimer (Old guys in boardroom meetings can actually be interesting)
8: Batman Begins (A twist villain done right! Certainly better than Mr. That Was His Mistake and Mrs. Mayor Sheep Dweeb)
7: Tenet (This movie feels like I’m taking drugs, but call me a pothead, because I love this film)
6: Memento (?Again about this movie was what .Forgot I !Lol
?Funny so I aren’t 😂)
5: Interstellar (I’m just going to cry for this entry so: 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Hold on! Timothee Chalamet was in this movie?!)
4: The Dark Knight Rises (Am I Phantom Menacing? Maybe. But this movie is very special to me as a Pittsburgher at heart)
3: Inception (BWOMMMMM! This movie is awesome! BWOMMMM! Hans Zimmer truly is a genius! BWOMMM! He must have took forever thinking of a melody for this score! BWOMMMM!)
2: The Prestige (My braincells…they’re gone. Batman + Wolverine + Black Widow + Gollum + David Fricking Bowie=Banger. That’s what I call nerd math!)
1: The Dark Knight (My favorite movie ever! I would make a pencil disappear or rob a bank or burn a pile of cash just to see this for the first time again! Heath Ledger is fantastic! He’s the Joker, baby!)
Finally, I have been waiting for this video ever since I discovered your channel way back!!!! Thank you for this Schaff! :))
Wonder if Schaffrilias will consider doing a *EVERY DON BLUTH MOVIE RANKED*
I originally watched Memento because it was one of the required films for an Intro to Film class I was taking. I hadn’t heard anything about the film before watching outside of the events being in reverse chronological order. Just from my first viewing it immediately became one of my all time favorite films. It is so rare to have a story where everything just works together to make an unforgettable masterpiece.
Nothing quite like watching Schaffrillas rank a bunch of movies that I haven't seen a single one of (I know, I know, I'm just really stubborn)
Thank you for uploading
Finally, I ordered my Christopher Nolan ranking an hour ago!
My personal ranking:
12. Following - 6.5/10
11. Memento - 8.5/10
10. Insomnia - 8.75/10
9. Dunkirk - 9.25/10
8. Batmam Begins - 9.5/10
7. Interstellar - 9.5/10
6. Tenet - 9.5/10
5. The Dark Knight Rises - 9.75/10
4. Oppenheimer - 9.75/10
3. The Prestige - 10/10
2. The Dark Knight - 10/10
1. Inception - 10/10
LETS GO NEW SCHAFF VIDEO
It says a lot about Heath Ledger’s performance of the worst part about it is what future Batman projects took away from it, rather than anything it actually did.
What made it so great is that it chose to be different from the typical portrayal in previous media and it really felt a distinct, rather than most things that came after where they were just trying to emulate Heath Ledger.
In example Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.
