I was in grade 11 when columbine happened. I was wearing a dark navy blue trenchcoat and Marilyn Manson shirts every day to school. We were sent home early that day , I got home and my mom says did you see this and pointed at CNN. I remember saying omg I'm going to get blamed for this....10 days later I get called to the office, get greeted by two plain clothes cops. I get arrested , they wouldn't tell me why , ended up I was charged with uttering threats because some preppy kid said he heard me say I was going to kill people.took 3 days to get to a judge to plead not guilty. I was told 3 days until court and held in custody. 3 days later get to court and they say we think he is going to say he was crazy we want a psych eval...which took 30 days.long story short I ended up in custody for close to 2 months for nothing.

I saw an interview with her and this all grew out of her lover for crime stories and she has always had an obsession of "True Crime" and decided to bring the stories to 'life' through her music.
She really does approach it from a very honest, researched, and deep understanding.
      I'm lovin these reviews.
I thought I was crazy in understanding her,
      and a real artist
because she shows the edges of your society back to us.

22 years since Columbine, wasn't the first ever in the US but it really did kick off what is becoming all to common in the US with these shootings. 22 years of thoughts and prayers being sent...maybe it is time to actually do something about it. 22 years and it just doesn't feel my thoughts are being picked up and my prayers, yeah doesn't seem like anyone is listening to those either. It is sad that the media at the time instead of trying to help and do something to expose how ugly this was almost turned the villains into misunderstood boys twisted by the evil of music and horror movies. Marilyn Manson being a particular favorite target at the time. 22 years, enough is enough, kids should be kids and hate school because it is boring and the usually angsty stuff, not be terrified of it as they run lockdown drills and hide under desks.

When I was in 4th grade, 9 at the time, I was playing laser tag with friends the night of columbine and the day after columbine, we were standing outside waiting to get on the buses, I must have forgot the laser tag gun in my book bag or forgot to take it out, but I took it out while standing in the crowd and was playing with it or whatever and the principle pulled me into the school, the cops were called, my mom was called and the entire school board had a meeting with me and my mom and they made a example of me and expelled me from school for the last 80 days of school. I ended up being held back a year and they wouldn't tell me why I was being expelled for having a toy. I had no ideal columbine happened before all this happened, I didn't even know it happened at all until later in life. Crazy how things like this happen, but now that I'm older and know what happened, I understand why it happened.

I was almost in another columbine-esque. Shooting in highschool. Absolutely terrifying and the kid was caught just before homecoming. I remember swat running in and us being ushered out. He had planted a duffel which was discovered later in the day. He wanted to commit the massacre because a girl had rejected his homecoming proposal. He had a list of her closest friends and potential dates he was going to kill.
After being ushered out by security and police and watching the swat run in, my group of friends all looked at each other in shock. And then we were like, “so you want to get Chinese?”
And I think the fact that we brushed it off, sends a message about how normalized school shootings are.

My personal opinion in regards to the problem with our country is the fact that our society is very sick and fractured. There are many mentally ill people out there who are not getting the help that they need for one reason or another, the family structure is broken, there is a lot of generational trauma and damage that is not being addressed because no one knows how to fix it or wants to, our Political system is so polarized, corrupt, and fucked up its not even funny (pitting one side against the other and everyone in between), it just seems like our society has truly lost the ability to truly care for each other and our cultural values have truly went to shit, we are a literal husk of what we once were. We have really just been swallowed up by a society full of psychopathic, narcissistic, entitled, Machiovellians. I can understand why we have so many lost, unhinged, people out there that should be getting help but aren't which, sadly, end up committing unspeakable acts (some of them, at least).

  • @simonwilliams8528

Actually the scary thing with Columbine , or rather, one of the scary things about Columbine is that there was no list.
Eric and Dylan although very partially motivated by the bullying they experienced let the main person who bullied them go after he started a conversation with him in the library during the massacre, Eric and Dylan killed people they'd never met and some people who they had only had good or indifferent interactions with, they shot people at random.
The original intention for the massacre was for it to be a bombing (which interestingly they knew would potentially kill many of their friends) and only after the propane bombs failed did they begin shooting inside the school.
The myth of "she said yes" was attributed to Cassie Bernall when in reality it was Valeen Schnurr who answered that she believed in god and Eric and Dylan let her live , interestingly enough.
The behaviour of the two boys on that day was beyond insane, there was no logic or reason to what they did, other than that they wanted to effectively "Kill the school" by destroying everyone in it.

So, it turns out I can't listen to this song without people reacting to it. I love Skynd, absolutely, but this one hits too close to home for me.
I'm pretty sure I wrote this in the official video's comments back when it first came out, but I want to share with you guys too.
I was in high school when this happened, just slightly older than the younger of the assholes. My mom and I were planning to move to Colorado that summer, but when this happened, like you said, EVERYTHING stood still.
I was one of those kids who wore trenchcoats, listened to heavy metal and had my look was very much like Alice here. I knew there was stigma even looking like that, in the ebb of the Satanic Panic. But this ramped it up by a HUGE margin. Because of that false narrative you two were talking about, they thought that all the kids in high school who listened to that music, dressed like they did, etc etc were going to wind up doing just what THEY had done. I remember the Christian spin on that shit, I also remember that they were trying to spin it that these two boys were bullied, and loner outcasts who wanted to kill the ones who made their life hell. No. None of that was true. It turns out, these two assholes were just... assholes. They wanted to make a big impression, they wanted to be known, be infamous, and they got what they wanted. Their list wasn't people that had bullied them, it was just people they wanted to kill because fuck those guys, I guess.
Now, the world is so much different because of what these two tiny-dick losers did in 1999. And it's not just the horrible amount of school shootings that have happened in the interim, but the glorification by kids who feel like this is definitely the way to make those who look down on them pay. I'm not sure you knew this; in 2019, a girl from Florida who idolized these boys decided to buy a gun, and trek up here to Colorado (By the way, we did eventually move here, it's a nice place,) and planned to shoot up schools just like her idols did, as a 20th year celebration of what they did. Let that marinate. A 20 year anniversary celebration of this HORRIBLE event.
And with my kid now in high school, I was freaked the hell out. Because it brought back all the fear, all the intensity, all the memories of meeting one of the kids that had been there that day, all of it coalesced into this ball of nerves that made me so, so scared that this is just going to keep happening. And it has.
Anyway, when this song came out, it impacted me. And I mean that in the most honest sense. I was so glad that Skynd stuck with memorializing the victims, and shifting the focus to those terrified kids who had to endure one of the most impactful, painful things that this country has ever seen.
AND okay that's a big ol' novel for you there. I really love this review, you guys are killing it. Consider me subscribed!

It’s a good novel though. I don’t have kids. Part of it is this fear. I had fire and earthquake drills. Kids now have active shooter drills. We all already have enough mental health issues as is, this worsens it and instead of doing something about gun sales, mental health alone gets blamed for it yet we do little alone to make health care affordable so mental health care gets put on the back burner

I was in middle school when Columbine happened. I was one of the goth/metalhead kids so I quickly noticed a change in how I was treated in the days and months after Columbine.
I later married a guy that lived near the school and was friends with some of the students (one of which was one of the victims.) To this day, he's still affected by this. He would always freeze and/or tear up if he ever saw clips of the security footage and the anniversary was always a somber day for him. It's a big point at the mental health care in this country. A lot of the serial killers, too, could have been prevented had there been more awareness about mental health and how to get help for those health issues. It's just always been so taboo in this country, which to me is why they tried to blame it on other things like on Marilyn Manson, etc. So, totally agree with what you guys said. Across the spectrum if there was more readily available mental health services, things like this would lessen. And on the music, to me the "carnival" sound in the "rattatat" chorus pushes that theme that it was all fun and games to them, when it was something quite dark and horrible that they were doing.

I would even sit and clean my finger nails in PE with my knife and no teacher ever said a fucking word. Oh, I also wore a trench coat every day. We didn't have metal detectors and a quarter of the student body had hunting rifles in their trucks in the parking lot.

I was in 9th grade when this happened. I hated how no one was willing to look at the two killers as just disturbed individuals instead it was a blame game on religion, music, video games, and movies. Those two a-holes made it hell for all of us that were metal heads and the goth kids BC we were all demonized and seen as killers in waiting.
I remember they tried to call Doom the game that trained them to be murders BC it was one of their fav. games to play. Craziest part though is one of them did make levels and maps for Doom and you can still find those maps and plays them today, its a lil harder to find, but they are still out there . A few YTers did playthroughs of them as well.
I love what they did with this song and how the video was done, BC it showed the fear and horror these kids went through and as you said it didn't make these guys look like celebrities. I noticed all their music focuses less on the killer and more on the victims as well.

My generation never experienced the fear of a potential school shooter. So I have always felt it from a parent's perspective. But this video brought you back into the feel of high school and everyday student life. It caused me to feel fear instead of the feeling of heartbreak that I am accustomed to having.

Metal detectors, constant drills, armed guards.. but I remember life before this very well also. I'm glad to remember an existence where there were just tornado drills.
The big thing that drove me crazy about the metal detectors... my graduating class was about 1,000 kids. We had 2,000 kids in our high school waiting to go through metal detectors lined up. So dumb. If someone wanted to take us out it would be very easy before even going in the school. Never made sense.

As someone living outside of America, its really frustrating to me that i dont understand the gun laws, and why whyyyyy it is STILL legal for people to just buy one?! 18 is NOT old enough in my eyes!
Im someone who likes to at least try to see a situation from both sides, but this frustrates me. Because i can't see why so many people dont want the gun laws to change. Can someone please explain this to me?
Why does the leaders resist that so much?
Im not trying to be rude, or ignorant. Im from a country that has insane strict gun laws, (thank god!) so i dont know.
Because when people scratch their heads, and wonder why these horrible shootings happen... to me its crystal clear! The easy access to guns!
Remove that and focus the attention on bullying and mental health in schools, instead of teachers with guns, or metal detectors (i mean, they are good for other potential weapons, but they would not stop a shooting i believe.. at least not the example of Columbine. They shot their way IN to school) I think its ALOT easier to harm someone with a gun than any other weapon. 😭
Im sorry for grammer mistakes. I tried my best to explain what im thinking 🙏

I mean this with no disrespect, we have very strict gun laws but we don’t have very strict parents with guns. I think the biggest issue is honestly, lack of good affordable mental healthcare and the stigma that goes along with it. We have a huge tendency to just dose people up with medications that have horrible side affects. Like these 2 school shooters, at least one was on Wellbutrin and Prosac. Instead we just throw some psychedelic skittles at younger and younger kids instead of treating each other with respect. But also remember you can fit all of the United Kingdom into the state of Texas over 5 times. Also these kids had backpacks full of pipe bombs so the gun laws wouldn’t have helped in this situation. Imagine all of the acid attacks in England multiplied by the size and population of America. Each country has their own violent attacks. I heard of one in the the UK about a kid being gutted in his driveway just last week. We have got to stop judging each other and learn to live each other and look at how to help (without that damn pat in the back some people seem to want) but how to help each other and protect each other.

@@bartonbella3131 Thank you for responding to me. You have very good points, and i agree with you 100%
Mental health care is something that sadly is not taken seriously enough, anywhere. And i hope by people talking about it like we are doing right now, can somehow bring that into the light, and something is done to better this 🌷
Im so sorry if my post sounded judgmental, that was not what i wanted.
What i was trying to ask in a clumsy and heated way, was if someone could explain to me why there is so many guns in the first place? Has it come to a point where nobody feels safe without one, because "everyone" else has one?
I absolutely understand from that point of view why someone would want to own one. But at the same time im wondering how that will progress in the future if nothing changes, you know?
Now im a little affraid of my wording coming across rude or ignorant. Please please dont take it as that. Im really gratefull that you responded and are teaching me about this 🌷

I really appreciate that you guys touched on the fact that so many factors play into these events, and in American culture we are incapable of understanding that and making any actual progress. I feel like either side has talking points fed to them, and nobody is willing to be honest. The left largely ignores the human element and acts like gun control will fix everything, and the right acts like these people were going to be murderers no matter what, so all we can do is harshly punish them afterward. In one of her interviews, the singer of SKYND says the message of her music is that we are all capable of inhuman cruelty, and we don’t know what we would do unless we found ourselves in these situations. It takes a lot of things going wrong for evil to flourish like her character did in this video, and it’s remarkable that this band has gotten so many people actually thinking about and discussing the results of that and the victims who deserve acknowledgment and respect.

I was 14 when Columbine happened and kinda weird to me now, I don’t remember much from the time immediately after, just generally how it was all encompassing on news channels for weeks afterwards. But I vividly remember how all these people desperately tried to find a scapegoat; surely teenagers weren’t capable of making violent choices on their own. And I remember how much it genuinely infuriated me at the time. The schools where I live made students start wearing ID badges and that was literally the only security measure they put in place. 🙄

I have always told people who think SKYND's music "glorifies the evil people" that; it is true that their videos are so striking that it takes the focus away from the song, you clearly never read the lyrics so you clearly do not know what the song is about, but as tough as their videos are to watch they are also essential to the conversation. Yeah, I was treated like a member of the TCM after Columbine. No one wanted to F with me but as far as some people were concerned I might as well have been there and pulled the trigger myself, teachers included. Even though I lived on the east coast and wasn't interested in hurting a fly. (heh, Psycho reference)

Honestly, as an Australian, I don't think it's irrational to home-school in the US in response to this at all. Maybe not after Columbine, but the sheer overwhelming numbers you eventually had - where it was no longer even front page news and was happening every week - I think it's entirely justified. If I lived in the US and had children, I wouldn't send them to American schools. I would either home-school or move to another country. This is an American phenomenon, and when Americans talk about bearing arms as a sacred right, the rest of the world thinks you're nuts.
