    How much did this cost???
    quite a bit, this is the machining cost which i'm sure you've seen:
    ua-cam.com/video/CP1mKXnVCWI/v-deo.html
    This is probably what the rest cost (guessed)
    block: £500
    (this did come with a crank, not useable, and camshaft, useable but not for me, head, not useable, and other bits so I could have saved at least £500 there if i'd been lucky and if the block wasn't cracked I could have saved at least another £1000!)
    Head £150
    Machining £1600
    First crack repair £600
    crank £150
    pistons £110
    rods £180
    Tappets £60
    Camshaft £95
    Timing chain £85
    Oil pump rebuild kit £20
    Timing cover £30
    Flywheel £100
    Crank sprocket £30
    Camshaft gear £40
    con rod bearings £45
    main bearings £65
    rings £55
    valve guides £48
    Springs £64
    Valves £112
    Gasket kit £85
    pulley £30
    Cam shaft bearing £20
    Misc £200
    At least £4500
    Remember if some of the original purchase parts had been better and the block not Cracked I could have saved at least £1500 so if you're lucky it could have been £3000
    So there is a 'fully rebuilt' engine on ebay at the moment for £4500 but it has been 'fully rebuilt' but who knows to what standard, their rebuild standard may be very different to what you expect.
    You could buy an unrestored engine on ebay for £1500, it could be all junk or it could be ok so you take a risk there and you'll probably still have to have spend £1600 machining so thats £3100 without purchasing any parts so I think £4500 sounds a lot but actually as this engine is mostly all NOS now and back to factory condition (as long as it runs!) for £4500 it seems about right!
    Of course you could get a jeep and find its all good, the bores just need a hone and some new rings and youre all good, thats not going to cost you much at all!
    It all depends on what standard of rebuild you're going for of course, you don't need to go to the levels I have for just a runner jeep engine, but remember the point of this engine is to see exactly how a 'brand new factory' engine should run and that costs!

      ...this sounds like the beginning to an old MasterCard commercial....
      But... Do y'all remember how they ALL ended???
      .......priceless.......
      That's what this build is. Period.

    I had my L134 rebuilt about 12 years ago. The machinist said it took as many hours to do the work as it does to machine a modern V8. It cost the same too. And I took it apart then rebuilt it.

    Brother, again as I said once previously, great true to form build.withbthe motor! With the old mechanics, with modern machining techniques allows for a motor that, should, have no discrepancies. Aside from timing, i predict a very smooth idleing motor on first start.

    I can tell you even if you're checking things I would still put some lube on especially if you're going to swivel it or turn it it will help protect the bearing Lord knows they're hard to come by huh I've always use plastigage and trusted it the first motor I built was a big block 440 for my roadrunner and that's what I used on that and everything worked out good glad to see you're getting things together brother I just got to say I love these UK videos

    I'm in the same process with my GPW engine. Double check your oil pump shaft endplay. 0.002-0.004 Most used ones I've checked are 7-10... will give you low oil pressure at idle. Housing can be machined to bring back to spec.
    Looks great!

      Michael,
      I have rebuilt 4 for myself and 5 or 6 for other people. All different engines. The best advice would be find a good machinist, and check everything. Bearing clearance, if you can check piston clearance. Definitely check piston ring end gaps .

    I was wondering why your thumbnail for this video has the words GO DEVIL on it?
    I ask because when I was in the US Army in the early 1980's, we were still driving that style Jeep. I was stationed at Ft Richardson, Alaska, and the unit I was assigned to was the 1st Battalion 60th Infantry, we were referred to as the Go Devils. My Jeep was designated as HQ9 (Headquarters company).

    • @Greendot319
      @Greendot319  4 роки тому

      Hi,
      thanks for your interesting comment, the L134 engine used in the jeep is nicknamed the 'Go devil', your unit history on wikipedia says:
      'During the 60th Infantry's drive along the Tunisia-Algeria border, the regiment captured a German general's diary which gave the regiment its nickname, the "Go Devils". In his account of American actions against the Germans, the general wrote, "Look at those devils go!" The 60th Infantry thereafter became known as the "Go Devils". During the battle Sergeant William L. Nelson was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.'
      Unfortunately, I do not yet know why it was nicknamed the Go devil but I can hazard a guess that like the German general who watched the 60th infantry, people who have watched the engine in action have remarked 'look at that devil go'!
      Thank you for your service (from a Brit ;) )

    I would not have used lock washers on the rod cap nuts. I have seen what happens when you do and it's not good.

    • @Greendot319
      @Greendot319  4 роки тому

      Thanks for that info, i've gone back over and seen the lockwashers! So the modern wisdom is not to use them and they weren't used on the jeep engine (my mistake!) but I don't think they should do any harm leaving them, Dodge flatheads of a similar age did use lockwashers, so some roughly similar engines were using them so it would appear they were used on connecting rods. I torqued the nuts and applied thread lock to them so i'm thinking its going to be ok to leave, they arent going to come apart.

    • @TheRootbeerfreak
      @TheRootbeerfreak 4 роки тому +1

      since your leaving them in, just listen for knocking after a while and good luck with it. The engine does looks great.

    • @Greendot319

    • @TheRootbeerfreak
      @TheRootbeerfreak 4 роки тому

    • @Greendot319
      @Greendot319  4 роки тому

      @@TheRootbeerfreak it should have a palnut, I used loctite instead, a modern solution to the palnut but I think it's going to have to come apart, I dont want any problems with it over 4 lock washers!
