  • Welcome to our first installment of VICE Talks Film, the series where we sit down with the most talented and creative minds in the movie world to discuss their work and how they're seeking to push the boundaries of the medium. In this episode, we caught up with director George Miller, creator of movies like Happy Feet, Babe, and of course the mythic Mad Max series.
    Now he's back with his lastest venture Mad Max: Fury Road-which some have called a badass feminist action flick. We talked to the 70-year-old director about the challenges he faced in recreating the Wasteland, his new crop of iconic characters, the insane practical stunts and why it took 17 years to make this movie happen.

    It's hilarious how a 70 year old man who's spent the last decade making kids' films and a 72 year old cinematographer who he had to pull out of retirement have given the world a crash course (literally) in how to make an action film.

    One of the best action movies I've ever seen. And the movie doesn't end in sequel bait, an actual rarity in most high grossing movies.

      @ds37 9 років тому +29

      ***** I'm with you on the sequel bait or opened ending, if there's a sequel well, awesome, if there's not, the movie stands on its own and has a pretty satisfying ending.

      ds37 Like all other Mad Max-movies, Fury Road felt like a standalone movie. It was so good I'm going to the theater to watch it again. I had a constant :D on my face the entire movie, that never happened before.

    • @ds37
      @ds37 9 років тому +1

      ***** I was a mad max virigin before fury road and wasn't comfortable with that fact but fury road looked and felt like a standalone movie which it makes it more accessible to newcomers. If I had the time and money I'd gladly go back a second time. But I'll wait for it to be on VOD next time.

      Huke Chong Yeah how many directors have succeeded like Miller? It seems to me that all these guys pretty much failed to deliver movies as good as their old ones. Same goes with peter jackson and his hobbit movies.

      ***** Very good description. I agree completely it's a blast from the past but done 10x better in every way. TV is so good these days that I can't usually get into movie stories anymore so I don't watch near as many movies anymore. But THIS movie reminds me of what was great about going out of the home to a real theater and experiencing something breathtaking you just can't find on TV.

      ***** Even me, a millennial enjoyed the shit outta Mad Max. I don't really mind CG if it is necessary and impossible to shoot practically (e.g Marvel Movies) but the practicality of 90% of the film is amazing and gives a sense of danger and fear for our character's life.

    I loved this movie and wouldn't have even realized that it is considered "feminist" if not for overly sensitive 1% of people. It simply treats its characters as if they possess equal importance to the story, it felt right, honestly. Nobody complains that one of the main characters is a capable yet physically handicapped person and that is making people happy too.

    • @matthewk2178
      @matthewk2178 9 років тому +41

      huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 Treating women with equality actually IS feminist. The idea behind feminism is helping women achieve equality, so if you think the movie treated men and women equally then you agree it was a feminist movie.

    • @huhhhhhhhhhhhh09
      @huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 9 років тому +30

      Matthew K Right, I suppose that's true. It's just that the word and idea have become so warped by peoples negative views of them. I guess I just meant that I didn't view the movie as the "evil propaganda piece of male mutilation" that some wanted to label it as.

    • @aaron-4062
      @aaron-4062 9 років тому +4

      Matthew K No, treating women like they are better than men is feminist. Name one good reason how women are in ANY way disadvantaged?

    • @Wildbot34
      @Wildbot34 9 років тому +9

      Matthew K Sure Matthew you can consider it feminist and I'll just consider it egalitarian. As long as it's about equality, it doesn't really matter what different people decide to refer to it as, right?

    • @jackglaser2001
      @jackglaser2001 9 років тому +7

      ***** I didn't mind the woman in the movie being the main character even though they called it "Mad Max" so they roped in people thinking it was another guy flick (kind of a bait and switch, but eh). I just don't like the fact they had to bring on a feminist to teach the actors how to act in the movie that's when I'm not a fan. Don't bring a controversial opinioned person into the planning of a movie and let the actresses act the way they see the characters. Sigourney Weaver didn't need a feminist consultant to be a strong female actress, neither did Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs. Woman can be great if they quit thinking of their gender being a handicap.

    George Miller is the man. Mad Max: Fury Road has pretty much convinced me that Spielberg's and Scorsese's generation of filmmakers is in fact the best there ever was. Miller defined a genre in the early 80's. Thirty+ years later, the now 70 year old director comes back to define it once again. Amazing.

He made her understand it was the wrong path and made no logical sense. It was actually perfectly natural - the man had to calm down the panic'd women and set them straight. Metal arm or not.

      @ROFLCOPTER195 9 років тому +17

      TheEvilmonkey1216 I know the R rating doesn't help, but ideally that shouldn't matter. Look at the 80's when R rated films were the highest grossing ones. Not the bullshit now where artistic integrity is sacrificed to pander to a young/dumb audience, I'm 18 and just can't comprehend why people my age and a bit younger choose the films they watch. It seems people literally go to films now to fill their time, instead of going to appreciate a good piece of story telling. Although I'm being negative, having an R rated film with such a big budget and clearly not messed with by big corporate studios, is a glimmer of hope that more films of this production value will take more risks in the future, fingers crossed.

    The interviewer definitely did her research. Great interview. I've waited 30 years for this movie and it was worth the wait! I've seen it twice and I hope to see it a third before it leaves the theater.

    The stunts in this movie are insane, and the unique look of the characters and the vehicles look so damn cool, if they make a sequel, i can only hope it is as good as Fury Road, since this movie has become another favorite of mine

    Thank you George, take notes fellas. Mad Max 1-4 are perfect examples of you don't need CGI to help you with everything action scene. After seeing Fury Road and seeing practical stunts and CGI when needed I am still blown away and this man is in his 70s??? Ha wow. It is really nice seeing a 2 hour non stop action thrill ride with action scenes that I can clearly make out for once.

    We need more people like George Miller making action movies. A guy who loves movies making movies. All the greats seem to have this in common. You can tell that there was so much detail and man hours worked into the costumes, cars, and effects. I was really impressed. The movie was great!

    So happy George Miller got to make this MASTERPIECE! This epic Hot-Rod Apocalypse! Even more happy to discover it wasn't CGI cars on a CGI background - but REAL Hot-Rods and Monster Cars and Trucks! REAL stunts! Wow! George is 70 years old - it shows in his craft, that he's taken a life time to get this good at film making!

    Hugh Keays-Byrne…. the villain "Toe-Cutter" from the first MAD MAX film, is BACK in Fury Road as "Immortan Joe"? WOW! That is SO Awesome! I love that… Wow. The epic Hot-Rod Apocalypse mythology is so complex and beautiful! Such detail and story has gone into every-thing we see on screen… such a great Film!
