Yes I’ve done the trip 136 times and have more to come
One of the best journeys in the world for the Christmas holidays!!
It truly is! I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month. If you liked my videos on The Canadian, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
OMG, Canada nature is a beauty. One day, we will see it there for sure
So truly naturally beautiful!
I’ve taken a train twice: Amtrak back in the 80s (not good, just above a bus) and VIA in 2017. VIA was so good, comfortable and we enjoyed it very much.
Which route did you take? Thanks for watching man. Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
Awesome video Trav! So cool to see what VIA can really offer. And you presented it so well, thanks!
Thank you so much Wes. Via does a great job on the canadian.
What an adventure! Love your commentary and storytelling 🤙🏔
Thanks for all your support brother. Looking forward to seeing you next week!
Great video Travis. It was great to hear that VIA upgraded your ticket for you and your gf free of charge. I just did the via Canadian from Van to Edmonton this past weekend. Even though I was in economy, the trip was fantastic. We were sure rocking and rolling west of Edmonton travelling 69mph trying to make up time. Glad to hear your surgery went well and wishing you a speedy recovery
Thats awesome man. How was the weather? Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
Trav, I'm Happy For You!
Heal Up And Get Ready For Next Season!
Thank you so much Dana :)
The view of those mountains, is amazing.
It truly does not get any better. A visual masterpiece. Thanks for watching Scott. Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
your best train vid yet! Happy healing...
Thank you very much buddy. More to come forsure. see ya soon!
Great video. A lot of guys reminisce about what could have been; fewer accept that they'll never be an NHL all-star but that's OK because at the end of the day, you're getting paid to play hockey and you're soaking up different cultures and experiences that the game is exposing you to. My old high school coach is the brother of a hall of famer. He had his cup of coffee too, though his career took him to Europe with a much lower paycheque. But he appreciated the experience for what it was and he seemed truly happy with his path in life. And that is what it's all about.
P.S. love the train content, if you're not in a rush there is absolutely no better way to travel.
Thanks for checking out the new train vlog, I agree. Love the game and nothign beter ;)
What a great trip! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching Joe! Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
Great video! I love train travel, and have done this journey round-trip to Toronto, and then back home to Vancouver a few times! The trip used to be a day shorter a few years ago, making the economy experience somewhat easier, but there are ways to make it manageable. The rail cars and ever-changing scenery are incredible, and it's nice to be disconnected from the outside world - I highly recommend it! The rails are an important part of our Canadian history, too.
Thanks for watching Jeff! The canadian is a time machine and a masterpiece at that! Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
Hey tray I’m glad you finally got the surgery and can’t wait for you to get better and see what you post next every week
I can't wait to be back and share all of it with you soon my friend :)
If I recall correctly the classes on the train are a carry over from when there was no AC. For cool fresh air you needed to open the windows. The further from the engine, the better the air due to being further from the exhaust.
That would make a lot of sense but to be honest, I don't mind hearing the train horn in the middle of the night. Just me. Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
Glad to see surgery went wel!. Hoping rehab does as well. Thanks for documenting the Canadian. Such a beautiful trip and it brings back a lot of memories. Treat your lady well. She took great care of you. Looking forward to seeing you on the ice again soon. Peace!!
I got an amazing woman and am very lucky!
Vancouver has been the superhero capital of Canada since hosting the 2010 winter Olympics by creating a lateral entry program for superheroes from all over the country Canada wide that are interested in relocating to bc and establishing Vancouver and the lower mainland as their base of operations for example Winnipeggers prefer Vancouver as their base of operation because of the warm weather in bcs lower mainland superhero and Vancouver is the first city in Canadian history to create a lateral superhero entry program and the 2010 winter Olympics and being the superhero capital of Canada will always be part of Vancouver's history
What a cool trip! Glad surgery went well. Hope your rehab goes well.
Thanks Bertram :)
Who doesn’t love the canadian and a good travel vlog?
Amazing Video and Trip Trav! Cheers from MTL.
Cheers right back to MTL. Hope you enjoyed this travel vlog and you enjoy the ones I have to come
Trav you make the best travel videos
Man I hope recovery is going fast and that your back to the fed soon brotha
Heal quick stay safe man
Back to the FED next year my friend!
I traveled this past June in Sleeper Class from Vancouver to Toronto on train 2 and from Toronto back home to Vancouver on train 1. You are correct you really do get treated like a king by all the staff, the service was second to none, and the food was amazing, There is no better way to see all the incredible scenery that our country has, and it was very special meeting people from all over the world.
IT is fit for a king but would be awesome if there was a way to take the southern cp ROUTE AGAIN!
Wow! Awesome editing!
Thank you very much Connor, got a few more VIA travel vlogs just like this. You should check em out :)
An excellent video. Thanks 👍
Thanks for watching man :) hope you enjoy my other via rail videos :)
Looks like a great trip! Happy to hear surgery went well and hope the recovery will go smooth as well! Excited to see where you go next.👍
Hoping to have the hip surgery video up for Sunday!
This is on my bucket list
It's an absolute must try trip! Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
Awesome video Trav!
Im planning on taking the Amtrak from Minnesota, and connecting over to Toronto in May 2024. So I bring my parent's with me so the three of us can experience this Great Canadian train together
We've been all over the USA on Amtrak, so it will be a first time on VIA Rail for us!
Thanks for Watching nick, it's an amazing journey. Hope your trip is awesome!
glad you and the 'wifey' had a great trip guy!🥞🧇🥗🍗🍖🫕🍲☕😆
We had an amazing trip DD!
What a great trip and a beautiful train. Enjoyed the vlog.
You’re so lucky u could sit - I had to avoid 90 degree sitting for about 2 weeks!!
I was very very lucky. Thanks for watching Glenn. Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
I did Vancouver to Toronto last year, it was awesome experience and the staff made me feel special as had birthday on the train. Took hundreds of photos
A memory of a lifetime! I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month. If you liked my videos on The Canadian, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
Thank you for posting this video, i love train travel, its calming and exciting. I haven't been on a train since I left Europe in 1968. Train travel is expensive now unfortunately. I hope your hip surgery went well and that it was a success.
Thanks for watching man! Trains are so awesome. Surgery went smooth, hopefully will have an update on sunday. Waiting for pictures from my surgeon. Hope you enjoyed this travel vlog and you enjoy the ones I have to come
Wow, its amazing journey and the view is stunning. Living in winnipeg but never try the rail yet.
It truly is man! What end of town do you live in?
As someone who works freight rail, the sunrises and sunsets are one of the perks.
Do you work for CP or CN? Thanks for watching man, hope you enjoy the other videos I got :)
My daughter and I took this trip in 2019. It was amazing and we met people from all over the world.
An amazing mother daughter experience! What route did you take and thanks for watching Janine :) hope you enjoy my other videos as well
Nice to see they gave u that upgrade. I couldent imagine u sitting in those chairs for that long post op… good to see u are feeling well
Oh man that would have been unbearable otherwise so shout out to VIA. they were awesome!
@@trav4oilers stay well brother. Movement is medicine. Keep that hip loose, youll be back in no time.
Super video.
Thank you so much man :) Hope you enjoy the ones I have to come
Great vlog Trav. I work for VIA and I'm also a goalie that's been following you for a while now. Always love the videos but seeing this is awesome ;) Very nice resume.
Awesome man, what do you do for via? Thank you for following me and all the support. I love VIA!
@@trav4oilers I'm in their IT Dept. I can tell you love VIA ! :P If you ever plan to come to Montreal, Quebec, hit me up ;)
This is awesome content, you just gained a new subscriber and I’m also from Winnipeg too 😃
Thanks for watching Kane. Whereabouts in Winnipeg? I grew up in St Vital. Welcome to the channel, hopefully with have more travel vlogs soon :)
Burst out laughing from the brutal pronunciation of Watrous!
Can you spell out how it should be pronounced? Curious what it's supposed to be :)
Googled - Sounds like Wattress?
Sorry I'm not from there but I'll do better next time :) Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
I remember following you from when you were just leaving Sweden and I was telling you I was living in Sweden too (still am!)
Even though I'm not a big hockey fan, I enjoy your videos and especially these ones where I can see home! And you're not kidding about the sunsets/sunrises in the prairies. I miss those soooo much here 😭
The sunrises especially are incredible :) hey well thanks for following me along man. Sorry you're not the biggest hockey fan but I do try to branch out every now and then especially with the travel vlogs :)
My wife and I took sleeper class from Vancouver to Toronto a few years ago. We loved it.
You guys go to pound town?
Thats awesome. How was the weather?
Great way to travel
Speedy recovery my guy
Thank you for the kind wishes Jay!
Great video some day I really wanna take the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver
You gotta try it my friend! Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
Great video!! And the meals on the Canadian are absolutely fantastic. I am a big junior hockey fan (Saint John) so I was wondering where you play hockey
Hey go sea dogs! I currently play for the Motor City Rockers in the FPHL but obviously done for the season with the hip surgery. Hope you enjoyed this travel vlog and you enjoy the ones I have to come and pro hockey vlogs colin ;) welcome to the channel

@@brehojojordan7259 awesome dude! Hoping to get a new video out this Sunday!
As a Life long Pittsburgher who can’t take 3 steps without walking up a 90 degree grade, I have to agree there’s something so serene and calming about the open prairies and flat Midwest terrain. It’s just neat to me seeing “nothing” for as far as the eye can see and think people don’t appreciate that kind of scenery enough
You know whats up Bobby, thanks for watching and being an OG my friend!
I've done toronto to winnipeg in the 90's Will do it again in November!
Enjoy it! It's awesome. I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month. If you liked my videos on The Canadian, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
My girlfriend keeps nagging me about going across Canada, maybe one day we'll pack our bags and go visit this amazing country!
Happy to see that you're recovering well! See ya on the ice soon buddy!
I promise you'll love the trip. It's pretty good right now.
Great video, so nice to hear some love for the prairies! I agree there is something so peaceful when travelling through Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
I've watched countless videos on the canadian. Never once have I seen any love for the prairies so i'm happy to be the 1st :)
Finally got a sleeper!...loll...Before you were always cramped in day coach. Congrats!
I kinda wish I didn't because I'll never wanna try coach again. It's a life changing experience in sleeper
The wife and I are going with the Prestige Class trip(Toronto to Vancouver) in the spring. She’s never been east of Toronto.
Hey if you got the 10k it would be a magical trip!
solid vid dude
Thank you for watching man. Hope you love my other via travel vlogs and the april one I have coming up!
I’ve often wanted to travel VIA again, the last time I travelled was 1984. When yi travelled with 5 small children from Calgary to Winnipeg
It's changed a lot since then, I wish i could have experienced your trip but this one was def awesome. Hope you enjoyed this travel vlog and you enjoy the ones I have to come Carol :)
Outstanding video. Now I want to do this trip and I have absolutely no reason to go to Vancouver
That sawesome, thanks for catching up Johnny :) come on down to Van City!
Thanks for the Videos. FYI Watrous is pronounced "Watt Truss".
Hey now I know :) thanks for watching man
More GF in future videos please! Also, would love more info on the surgery. The process, any pain during any pain afterwards, came you notice the mobility difference right away? Good to see you're in good spirits.
She will be in lots to come my friend :) Will hopefully have my surgery video this sunday!
Hope the hip is starting to feel better Trav!
Doing much better my friend :)
Nice video sir, thanks for giving me credit.
Thank you for the awesome clips to help tie the story together. Happy to promote you anytime ;)
Nice
Thanks AV!
i took the trans continental train a long while back during when the 2010 Olympics were in Vancouver took it from Toronto to Vancouver and it was a stunning journey and would so do it again if i get the chance to
Trans continental stopped running decades ago man . Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :
There definitely a correlation with butterfly style of goaltending and hip issues.
absolutely!
Now I know why the price for a sleeper car is slightly pricier,, that food looks amazing!! Thanks for the insight,, it's enough for me to splurge my next trip :)
HAHA thats awesome! Rivers to Vancouver? Sleeper birth gets you all the perks a cabin would. Hope you enjoyed this travel vlog and you enjoy the ones I have to come :)
Hello trav. You should definantly look at comming to the danish metal liga. I Think it would fit you perfect😁
What is the danish metal liga? 💭
@@trav4oilers its the biggest danish proffesional icehockeyleague. You should definantly look in to it as i believe that we are missing some good goalies. They also often take goalies from other countries and pay Them okay😁
This is now on my bucket list. My best friend and I took a train trip from Seattle to Chicago and the Chicago to NYC. The views from VIA Rail seem on another level though!
That Amtrak trip look awesome. So many trips to take! Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
@@trav4oilers Thanks for the welcome! I've been following you for years though!
How does the dinning car seating work? Looks like you were across from some nice elderly couple the one day and your girlfriend was sitting next to the gentleman across from you the next day. I'm sure everyone gets nice and friendly on a train trip and who cares where you sit. Just curious :) That food looked amazing! Props to VIA for taking care of ya and your lady. Hope you're having a good recovery.
1st come 1st serve in the seating department. We sat by ourselves for breakfast and brunch. But it's not bad sitting with other people if you're with a cool couple or cool group!
Wonderful video! We took the Toronto-Vancouver Canadian in May a few years ago and loved it!! The food was fantastic, the staff gracious, the scenery beautiful. I'd do it again any time of the year.
It all cannot be beat. Thanks for watching and hope you see you back soon :)
First class is generally in the front because it moves less not for safety, being connected close or directly to the engines weight stabilizes it more the closer to the front you are.
So I wonder why it’s at the back of this train then? 🤔
@@trav4oilers might not have a proper train yard to Turn it
Great video!
Thanks for sharing.
I would like to take my 92 year old mother from Toronto to Vancouver.
Is the train assessible for the elderly?
Are the stairs difficult to navigate?
Is there room for the use of a mobility walker on the train?
Thanks again.
I don't think there is a lot fo room for mobility walker on the train in the halls. They do room service but it may be tough to experience.
@@trav4oilers Thanks for the response. And best of luck to you!
my granny was a cook on that train for years. wonder what it was like lol
Its a fascinating setup they have. its bigger than youd think
It is definitely a bucket list of mine, I’d actually want to do the Winnipeg to Churchill run, that will be fun, kool video, your pro hockey player, that’s kool, I’m a pro basketball player, we both athletes
That run would be great especially in sleeper! Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :) where do you play basketball?
@@trav4oilers I will definitely check out your other videos, I am subscribed to your channel, I actually started a UA-cam channel as I am also doing travel vlogs. I play basketball in Cambridge Ontario, the gym I go to has a small league which is where I play, i used to play on the high school team, but it was always hard for me to get into teams because I’m short, I’m only 5”5 but I’m good, im fast and I usually get the ball in the net, even three point shots, not trying to brag or anything but it’s just people always underestimate me and I just don’t think it’s fair, just because I’m short doesn’t mean I’m no good, oh well, I just make the best of it, I love my basketball no matter. Anyways, I look forward to seeing more of your videos in the future,
I figured the Prestige Class was at the back because it was the quieter/smoother section of the train.
That would make sense but I don't think the track gets any smoother towards the back
I'm going to Kamloops for chl championship in May I'm debating if sleeper or not hmm 🤔🤔
Ohhhhhhh now that would be a great trip for the Mem cup!
Dude when your done hockey in a couple years you could do a travel vlog.
I would LOVE too!
“It’s so cold I can’t feel my lips”
“You don’t have any lips” 😂😂
hahah we have a very unique relationship but I got an amazing girl ;) thanks for watching and welcome to the channel, hope you love the other travel vlogs :)
Hey Trav, would you know if there’s still a smoking car on the train? I’ve traveled on it from Sioux Lookout to Edmonton before on a class trip
No smoking allowed on the train.
No smoking allowed on the train but you can have a smoke break at all the stops along the way! Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
I want to save up money so that I can do a round trip from Toronto to Vancouver. I take it regularly about twice a year between Toronto and Jones (special stop request) in Northern Ontario to visit family. I remember when Economy used to get meals in the diner cars. :/
I was told it may be a summer thing when economy can come to the dining car again but it was an awesome experience. Thanks for watching and hopefully I'll bump into you :) Welcome to the channel
I wish taking the train was as exciting as how it look in the video. I took it once and promise myself I would never take it again, it doesn’t go fast and a one hour flight, take like 6 hours on the train, plus they have to stop and let the cargo train go by and this can also take awhile, unless u want the experience, it’s way better to book a flight
I think the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I look at the train at the destination itself and I love the trip so I enjoy it just as much as the video. I think that comes across. Hope you can get to experience the same thing!
Who was handling the dining car and Park car on your trip? I was on the Canadian from Vancouver from Edmonton in November, and we had an excellent, Winnipeg-based service crew that was very memorable.
The placement of the cars is a very old convention dating back to the oldest steam and diesel locomotives. Due to their very loud noises, railroad management put the sleeping cars in the back so as not to disturb their overnight, high-paying guests.
I think almost everybody is Winnipeg based so they can do the winnipeg to toronto portion or winnipeg to vancouver portion. It's pretty cool. Wahida, claire and Claudia were taking care of my car :) Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
@@trav4oilers I belive that at least one of the service crews is positioned out of Vancouver. When I was on the Canadian a few months back, Wahiba had the dining car helm, and was an excellent steward. I also received a Prestige class tour, provided by the Park car attendant who looked quite similar to the one in your video.
That was awesome !! I want to take this trip for fun with my wife ! Going on the via rail website to check it out .. anyone at via I can email to tell them; YOUR responsible for this American looking at a Canadian vacation!!!
Make sure you tell them! Hope you check out my other travel vlogs on the train and through my pro hockey season. See ya soon and welcome to the channel :)
I'm learning a lot about Canadian geography with these VLOGs. Any reason why it goes north-west via Edmonton rather than through Calgary? I'm assuming there's a natural hazard in the way. I'm Australian so I get the vast distances and all of that, but snow and proper mountains are a little bit foreign to most of us.
Politics. Before the early 90's they had trains on both the current route (called the super continental at the time) and the one through Calgary which was called the Canadian. Then there were cutbacks and they kept the more northern route. They claimed that it was because this line served more remote areas, but I've also heard that more politicians of the party in power represented areas along the current route at the time.
@@chrisjohnson7929 Thanks for the response. Makes sense... kinda. LOL! Good 'ol politics getting in the way of anything logical hey?
As chris mentioned, same thing the politicians are the reason I heard before. I hope they bring back the old route!
I heard the exact same thing. Thanks for watching chris :)
From 1955 until 1978, The Canadian was the principal transcontinental train (Montreal/Toronto-Vancouver) of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Their main line goes through Thunder Bay ON, Regina SK, Calgary and Banff AB. Most consider this a more scenic route than the Canadian National Rys.' more northerly route through Saskatoon SK, Edmonton and Jasper AB. In 1990, due to government cuts to VIA Rail's budget, The Super Continental train that ran over the CNR main line was cancelled, and The Canadian was moved on to that route in its place. There were a number of reasons given for doing so, but as previous commenters mentioned, the CNR main line ran through the ridings of two powerful federal cabinet ministers. Also, Canadian Pacific Ry. was happy to no longer have to host passenger trains on its main line. Unfortunately, Thunder Bay, Regina, Calgary and Banff were left without regular scheduled passenger train service.
Just wondering seeing you were in a wheelchair for some of it are the are wide enough to get a wheelchair through the halls asking because I am in a wheelchair and what's the cost from Winnipeg to van I am in calgary but would love to do that trip it looked super beautiful
Wheelchair won't fit in the cabin hallways. They were nice enough to give me wheelchairs service but it was a tight chair. I put the cost in the video ;)
I must of missed that sorry I will watch it all over again not like that's a bad thing tho
@@buddha_6925 Goodluck :)
