  • For Signal Colors episode 07, I take a look at the OTO Machines BIM delay - a high end 12-bit stereo studio delay effect unit that has tons of hands-on control. I think it makes a pretty fun pairing with the Digitakt.
    For more information on the BIM's feature set, here's the link to the manual from OTO Machines: www.otomachines.com/wp-conten...

    I created Signal Colors because I wanted to create the kind of overview, demo, and review videos I like to see on UA-cam but can never find enough of - a straightforward look at pedals/effects with electronic music gear as the priority. Come back to see a new episode every 2 weeks and please leave a comment if you feel like being part of the conversation. I welcome questions, I enjoy the discussion, and I'd really appreciate any constructive feedback you could give me. I'd like to make this as helpful as I can for as many people as possible. Thanks for checking it out!

    Superb review. I am now tempted to go spend money. I have the Korg SDD 3000 pedal but wanted to add another flavor. I was looking at the Zen Dub Delay but I think I am leaning to the BIM so much great sounding flavors.

      Wow I wasn't familiar with the Korg pedal, that thing looks pretty serious! The BIM is a great addition as long as you can memorize the dots haha. If you're all about just twisting knobs and seeing where it gets you, then all the better! =)

    It’s definitely a good box. I use the through mode to color my drum samples from modern MPCs and Toraiz boxes. The trick is go easy on the input gain and make up for it with the instrument gain of your sound interface. This box is like an MPC 60 portable. While my 60 is in service this will definitely do. Cheers for the video mate.

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos  3 роки тому +2

      That's great to hear! Was the MPC 60 12 Bit also? I could totally see the similarities to that old-school sampler sound. I had an MPC-1000BK and while it's a lot more modern than the 60, I still think it's up there as one of my favorites of all time, a lot less "color" though.

    • @LocaliLLocano
      @LocaliLLocano 3 роки тому +5

      @@Duskmos yes it was 12 bit at 40khz. I own other 12 bit samplers and the BIM falls between 32kz-38kz of 12 bit. One other special trick you should try it pitch up your loop in the DT by +2 semitones record into your daw and pitch down -2 semitones. You will get the aliasing effect in playback of your DAW. Imagine the amen break pitched up then down with this box. Remember the BIM uses real AD DA 12 bit converters. So this is more than an emulation box.

    I'm really invested (emotionally too) in Oto Machines, I get 5% magic by passing stereo set recordings through Boum, and 5% adds up to 100% improvement.
    So I purchased Bim because I need the analogue delay rather than digital fx of my two Eventide H9. H9's are fabulous for loads of harmony/resonance fx but for bread and butter feedback delay Bim sounds so much more musical.

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos  3 роки тому +2

      The ecosystem is pretty great overall. I enjoyed the BOUM and will likely pick one up again someday. There really is some magic in these boxes! :)

    • @Space_pulse
      @Space_pulse 2 роки тому +2

      I hear that sentiment. I was hesitant to invest in machines that were so expensive, but pulled the trigger on a BOUM and was blown away. Then I decided to get the BAM, which admittedly took some time to fall in love with, but quickly became an essential tool. I have held off on the BIM since I have a lot of delays in Eurorack, but I have been considering divesting from Euro to get into Buchla and the BIM is sort of on my radar again. Maybe I’m a sucker for nostalgia, but there’s a certain flavor to OTO Machines and it’s getting to be a big part of my sounds. Next thing I know, I’ll be selling my car to fund a Biscuit. 😝

    I've owned and sold two BIMs over the past couple years... I've just ordered my third one and this time I'm not gonna let it go. I think in 10 or 15 years when these have ceased production they will be worth a lot of money (not that they're particularly cheap to begin with). There's just nothing out there that ticks all the same boxes for me. Such a cool machine.

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the compliment! Happy to do it :)
      I have tried a DIG but only briefly. If I can give any kind of notes, I’d say that the DIG just felt more like a “pedal” and the BIM feels more like a piece of studio rack gear but in a tabletop box. I mean that in physical form obviously, but even in sonic characteristics and flexibility as well. You get lots of parameters as well as deep midi integration with the BIM. Strymon stuff sounds great, and I wish I could’ve A/B’d them, but I can’t really speak to it on that level. Hopefully someone else sees this who has had time with both and can add more info for ya!

    I used to do the thru mode trick with an old Roland SDE-1000 (delay and feedback all the way down, no actual thru mode), the BIM has made it much easier. (Though if anyone wants a cheaper option, SDE-1000s are still going for around $150 last I checked.)

    Thanx for sharing that! Is it mono samples from Digitakt?

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos  3 роки тому +2

      Happy to share! It is mono, the Digitakt can output stereo, but only supports mono samples, so any stereo would be panning inside the Digitakt, but I don't believe I did any for this demo! Just left as is. As you heard, the BIM has some great stereo effects though, and adds a bunch to the width - really cool. Hope this helps!

      @Duskmos  3 роки тому +2

      @@RomaBromich I have! I've tried it with my SH-101 and it was great. The stereo panning it does in some modes is great, and really does add a lot of "stereo interest" to mono sources. I'd definitely say it's worth trying out if you're curious. The used market for these is still really strong so worth the gamble if you can find one at a good price.

    27:21 is this high pass effect caused by phase cancellation from mixing the dry and the wet? Maybe from a slight time delay or because the wet signal has an inverted phase. Or is there some kind of specific feature that does that? I can't find too much documentation about it, the manual doesn't appear to have been updated to include the new modes.

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos  5 місяців тому +1

      Hey! I'm not 100% myself, though the phase guess is a good one. I need to investigate further myself!

    Question on the delay time knob vs division vs range vs tap tempo…what’s your process for setting the delay time you want? I haven’t seen this set of controls before and i don’t really get it. Can you get a fully sweepable delay range or is it only within the range set by the range knob? And then i assume tap tempo is linked to division?

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos  Місяць тому

      Not gonna lie to you, I just set it manually with the knob, and if I like it as it sits, I lock it into the preset for that track. I keep it on my mixer as a send and use it more like a performance effect (which works great and the freeze is fun to manipulate and bend around) or I use it just to feel out what delay might sound like on one of the channels, and still just manually dial it in anyway. When I track out my next album, I’ll probably set the presets to sync with program changes over midi so I can easily recall those settings per track/pattern, but yeah anyway you can sweep the knob and dial in whatever delay time you want. The range just sets how fast/slow the delay can be, so like a max and min delay time. You can also tap tempo freely but that’s if you don’t have the delay tempo synced via midi clock, but I haven’t really spent much time setting that up or messing with that much since I like to keep it loose anyway. Hope this helped a little!

  • @jarjar45123

    how do you like the polyphrase vs this unit? When do you grab one vs the other?

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos  2 місяці тому +1

      Very good question because I find that I like them both a lot! I keep the OTO BIM and BAM as the 2 send effects on my mixer, perma-installed there, which I like because they have full midi sync w/ program change and great sound with hands on fun and lots of options for tweaking. I think the BIM is a bit more flexible overall, but the Polyphrase is a lot of fun and maybe a tad more immediate - less options - but that keeps it straightforward which is a plus in a way. The harder question is BAM vs Ultrasheer. I think the same response applies there too, but the Ultrasheer is perfection haha. SO for me, the Vongon stuff is when I want to grab a stereo reverb or delay to put on a stereo setup I rig up, or on a particular device before it hits my mixer, but the OTO stuff is my final go-to on the sends. Can't go wrong with either imho.

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos  2 роки тому

      Yeah! Not maybe 1:1 identical in sound or features, but there are a few stereo delays that are still a lot of fun. One that comes to mind is the Strymon Volante, definitely a favorite of mine. The Avalanche Run V2 is also another great choice. That being said, I think the BIM is still my #1 for a "performance oriented" delay. That freeze button is too fun. =)
