I never got into Creed until later in life. I had put on One by Metallica on youtube music while driving for amazon and Bullets by Creed autoplayed. It melted my face and I didn't know who they were or even really appreciate metal until then.
    Creed got me into metal.

Not a big Creed fan, but interesting video. It's amazing how many layers of cultural cringe we operate in. I think Gen X grew up in a world that was Christian largely in name only. They grew up hearing empty platitudes from hypocrites, and thus became jaded and cynical. Gen Z grew up in a world that was secular, again largely in name only, and might not fully understand the resentment that Gen X had for Christianity. I must say when I hear a song like "If Today Was Your Last Day" by Nickelback, the sincerity of it feels a bit phony. Or at least too sappy, like a "Live, Laugh, Love" sign. But at the same time, I barely grew up in a time where that kind of sappy sincerity was the norm. If you look at the cheesy sincerity of the 80s, the 2000s look rather edgy by comparison. And since Gen X grew up in the 80s, I think they view something like Creed as an extension of that cheese, so they mock it. I still see it today when my Gen X relatives poke fun at religion, it almost feels in bad taste to me. Not because it's sacred to me or anything, but because they are beating a dead horse. They are rebelling against something that is no longer the cultural hegemony. I think when Gen Z are young they are inclined to listen to their parents, but as they age, they are not as eager to continue to adopt their worldview. Gen Z is rebelling against this cynical, smarmy, and smug Gen X type. I think the Wojak memes are a great example of mocking this type of smug person. I grew up listening to Gen X and Millennials bash the Star Wars prequels and Nu-Metal. And I think they hated the sincerity of those as well. They complain constantly about the love story in Attack of the Clones or laugh at KoRn lyrics, because the Gen Xer has to be cooler than that. Gen X likes Han Solo and Thrash Metal because they are sarcastic and macho. They act like they are above having genuine feelings. They repressed themselves so hard, it's no wonder their kids are emotional wrecks. I'm also not surprised that 2000s nostalgia hit hard in the early 2020s, as Gen X really did not reassure the youth with how they handled things. It's nice to know we don't have to listen to their opinions, we can form our own.

Great points man. Absolutely the smarmy smug holier than thou attitude of Gen X is a huge part of it. But maybe now it is us who is culturally cringing at The Gen X attitudes. Great point about the wojacks as well. That was my big point here, these people hate sincerity. It really is a fascinating field of study. Thank you for bringing it into my thoughts with your great videos man. 👍 you must be about the same age as me no?

My first experience with Creed was actually fairly recently, I saw a TikTok video of a guy singing Higher and wanted to know what the song was, thought it was a Pearl Jam song I just hadn't heard before lol. I knew Creed as a name, and knew of it's bad reputation but I don't really ever let major audience's opinion affect mine unless it's to do with unethical behavior/views or whatnot (Burzum comes to mind here)
Thanks for this video, Varvis, I've been wondering about the Creed hatred for a while now and this video sums it up pretty well, I'll make sure to watch the podcast you mentioned, sounds super interesting!

I bought the first two creed albums when they were new, but I had a huge and awesome collection of rock and metal CDs so I bought lots of stuff in the late 90s. I remember sometime around 2001 or 2002 my friend saying creed was getting a lot of crap for being a christian band even though they weren't. I had actually never noticed it before, but could see it after that. Then shortly after that they became full-blown hated along with nickelback (who I also had all their albums up to that point) and anybody who had ever liked them pretended to have never liked them. That CD collection got stolen, and for the next twenty years I pretended like I never bought those two creed albums. This is the first time I've admitted it in probably 25 years.
Your channel is awesome, I find every video entertaining 🎸

I enjoyed this video. you hit a lot of good points.
I grew up on creed mostly their singles. I started to dislike them because it was not cool to like them, plus I was interested in heavier artists. I enjoy half of the material on My Own Prison, but I could see how this is everyone's favorite. I believe Human Clay is a really great effort from the band. The heavier moments on this release feels more genuine than it did on their debut release. Weather is not a good album and I believe this release had killed their moment. Songs I would return to on this release are Who's Got My Back, One Last Breath, My Sacrifice, Hide, and Don't Stop Dancing. The rest of the album is just difficult to get through. You could feel on this release that the band did not want to be in the studio. Maybe they should have taken some time after Human Clay. Full Circle is an incredible release I wish more people would come back to. This is one is my favorite release because the band sounds so mature and great melodies can be found all throughout. Rain is definitely creeds best work, this song hit really good.
I don't see creed as butt rock no more, butt rock is Bands that sing mostly about sex and break up songs, and being famous. (Hinder, Saliva, Theory, Puddle of Mudd, and Saving Abel.)
Creed does have a variety of incredible lyrics.
I am not a super fan of Creed, I just enjoy two releases of their discography Human Clay and Full Circle. But I would be very curious to see/ hear what they do next.

I’ve always felt Creed were very over hated and never deserved to be put in the same category as Limp Bizkit and Nickleback they have very solid tracks and they have extremely solid guitar riffs I also feel Scott Stapp is a solid vocalist. They have some songs that aren’t very good but overall they have a decent discography especially their first album which is dam* good however I’d argue even Human Clay and Weathered are darn solid with tracks like Weathered, What If, Who’s got my back, and even overplayed tracks like Higher are darn good that’s my own two cents anyways.

  • @PuddleOfPizza
    @PuddleOfPizza 3 місяці тому +1

Creed for me falls somewhere in the middle of the Post-Grunge lineup, I think they're incredibly talented musicians with some genuine bangers. But they ran out of steam too quick, Those first two albums are quite solid while Weathered is... A bit of a mess (I never listened to Full Circle for the record)
I'll give them credit though, Even if I don't think their discography is impressive I do think their songwriting is leagues ahead of the smutrock garbage in Theory, Saving Abel, My Darkest Days, Hinder, Buckcherry, And a lot of Nickelback's catalogue. That's the kind of stuff that I despise and it's part of why Post-Grunge gets a bad reputation despite most of the musicians not being that shallow.
I don't mind the occisional smut anthem, Control by Puddle Of Mudd is a 10/10 banger as you know. But it's low brow mediocrity in a genre that is capable of producing much better. What I prefer from Post-Grunge is the more introspective songwriting that you find in artists like Shinedown, Seether, Staind, Creed, Early Avril Lavigne, Three Days Grace, Godsmack, Chevelle, And yes, Puddle Of Mudd. A lot of people lump Puddle Of Mudd into buttrock based off of a couple songs but their music is largely about drug addiction, Loss, Introspection, And schizophrenia.
And sure, None of this music is super complex and it does heavily borrow from previous acts in Grunge, Industrial, And Nu-Metal. But I don't think that makes it bad or even less authentic by default. I can't speak on other bands but Puddle Of Mudd was straight out of the grunge era, Their debut EP "Stuck" was released in 1994 and the band formed in 1991. There are videos of Wes singing in 1991 and he sounds the same as on Come Clean. Granted, I don't care about authenticity arguments anyway but in this case it's not even accurate.
Though my music taste was mostly formed through Linkin Park so I tend to gravitate towards their style of writing/production more than anything out of the grunge era, That, And there's just something about hearing a guy scream "I'm the freak of the world" or "I'm tired of everything in my life" over roaring guitars that appeals to me.
Regarding Creed "My Own Prison", "What If?", "Torn", and "Bullets" are jams 🤘

Enjoyed the video, agreed with most everything you said, BUT... I think a big part missing from this story is that Alter Bridge isnt just a side project for Tremonti, its ALL the members of Creed except Stapp. Theyve made like 7 or 8 albums since Stapps troubles. And Creed might have been widely criticized and mocked but I dont think any of their albums failed, so a big part of their resurgance is going to be the fact that the band stayed together and when Stapp got himself together, they were ready. Alter Bridge is the better band by far but they built their brand in a crap economy and there are few bands from this era that can fill arenas for that tour money like Foos or Metallica who are basically nostalgia acts and so is Creed, so while Myles Kennedy (Singer for Alter Bridge) is off touring as the singer for Slash which he has been for like 5 albums, the rest of the band can get a payday from Creed. If Creed never really failed commercially then its weird to act like their fans wouldnt still be there or that they wouldnt repeat their past successes, especially when the instrumental parts of the band have stayed a tight musical unit and making the best music of their careers in the meantime. Seems like no mystery at all.
But I appreciated that you went into Mark's guitar playing, tunings, etc. The Tremonster is a riff god. But the rest of the band is a perfect unit, drums and bass. Always in the pocket. Credit where its due:) Cheers.

Not sure I agree with the "cynicism vs. genuine passion" angle in this case. I think the thing that is so off-putting about Creed is exactly this mix of uncanny, exalted christian type emotivism, extremely kitschy and hackneyed arrangements and woefully middle-of-the-road, zero effort housewife rock that doesn't hurt anybody. That's not exactly what you would call genuine or passionate and I think the more discerning music fans tend to pick up on that easily. There's another band who followed the same concept to a tee (minus the religion), predictably had huge success and got tons of airplay, but also attracted the same kind of ridicule among more engaged listeners - and that's Nickelback. Deservedly so. Both bands are guilty for a whole lot of music that can be described as the auditive equivalent to flat beer.

Creed was never cringe. Even this word was basically invented by ever-offended (and at the same time cynical) 2000s youth that wanted to be "anti" something. Basically Creed was a good band but with too much dad\boomer vibe. Sometimes it's a worst kind of luck to have. Good God these times are over and cringe youth of 2000s now well in their forties.
