Since you asked in the video, I’d recommend James Gurney’s channel (creator of Dinotopia) he does a lot of plein air painting using gouache, and I’d have to say he’s pretty much mastered the medium.
Bao Pham is my most favorite Gouache artist on UA-cam. Their illustrations give me a sense of satisfaction and relaxation I rarely see in other artists.

Love this new series! I am always curious about new mediums, but can't really justify jumping in (paints, new brushes, etc.) just for the sake of curiosity. You do a great job of demonstrating the medium and how it differs from watercolor (I always wondered why you have to start with the darks in anything other than watercolor - now I know!) A general rule for ALL art started on a white background is to go from light to dark. But for most mediums besides watercolor you can also go dark to light, a combination of both, or start with a medium tone and work from there. Really you just have to experiment and figure out what works for you and the project you are working on
My daughter takes an art class with a Chinese artist and all they use is gouache like watercolor paint. I don't know enough about art to know why, but because of this, I just use it like watercolor. I think your paintings were good! Just like anything else, it takes practice, but you're good at that!
Great video! My favorite youtube gouache artists are Jared Loves to Draw and Lena Rivo. I paint with Royal Talens gouache, since I am in Europe, this is very affordable and the quality is very good. I agree with you on the feeling zinc white muddies the colors, I do not like it. I use titanium white. As I do not like to waste fresh paint, I store it in little plastic jars with lids and I paint from these. I like to be able to close them individually, so the paints I am not working with don't dry, but for example Lena Revo works from an airtight palete with just one lid. Spraying the palete also helps to keep it fresh.

For me I usually use Davinci gouache. When I started with it I mainly treated it like acrylic paint. My desk top is glass and I use it as a big pallet. Just like you said my biggest tube is white. I just keep layering, quickly as not to loosen the previous layers. Very glad you used older brushes, I always make sure all my watercolor brushes are put away before starting. when done, I spray the glass top and clean it and the paint comes up easily. thanks for the great review of skillshare. I’ve recently tried my hand at gouache too. I watched Painting with Jane and decided to do her reaper. I did use matte medium with my gouache and it worked beautifully. Gouache tends to dry fast and I wanted that layered ghostly effect. I also like the thick consistency, flat brush and paint straight from the tubes. Well done on your rhinos. I love the texture and depth.
coming from acrylic to watercolors, I used gouache in both watered down versions as well as thickly to transition. I love how you had such painterly strokes! it is absoulutly beautiful and something that cannot be done with watercolors
Your gouache paintings look so lovely! I personally use Holbein artists gouache. If you like layering with muddying the last layer, you can try acryla gouache! 😊 Can't wait to see more of this series
Now I'm convinced I shouldn't do gouache. It looks too deliberate and exact for my skill level. And I thought the first peach looked more organic. So obviously even my perception is off. Though I'm not a realism style person . I appreciate those who are, but at just under a year into painting I'm starting to accept what is me. Very nice demo Denise. Thank you.
That's an interesting perspective! I actually don't find it exact at all! I make many "mistakes" but can fix them more easily than with watercolor. And you're absolutely allowed your own thoughts on the peaches! That's why I asked :) I like the sketchier nature of the second one and the process was more enjoyable, but looking at them afterwards, I can totally see that the first one looks more "painterly" :)
Just splashed out on some schmincke designer gouache as Jacksons are doing a 20% discount then came to youtube to see what I was getting myself into only to find you at the top of my search! So informative as usual, thanks Denise :)
PW4- Zinc White and PW6- Titanium White have different properties. PW6 has a larger coverage (as you mentioned) and it helps to form color tints faster than PW4 that creates subtle touches. Also, PW4 resists much longer in time. The Zinc White was used by the great oil masters, so their paintings resisted in time as we all see today, while the Titanium becomes yellowish over time. Pw4 is recommended to be used especially for light and very light areas in a painting.
So fun to learn along with you...as you know I am also dipping my toe in the world of gouache and I'm excited to learn more. I'm also super excited to see more of this series!
If you want to keep your gouache wet in a palette I recommend the, Transon Watercolor Palette Box Airtight, on Amazon. All I do is spritz my paints once a week with water and it keeps them creamy.
Beautiful job! Those are some cute rhinos :) My favorite gouache artist is Myriam Tillson. Her UA-cam channel has a great tutorial for gouache as well that I've watched countless times.
James Gurney uses gouache quite often and he also uses a combo of watercolor and gouache in his work. His videos are so informative as he shares how and why he uses each type of watercolor. I have his video Gouache in the Wild, which is his plein air gouache work and there is lots of good stuff in that. One apparent obstacle he discusses is that his gouache palette dries out pretty quickly outdoors.
I LOVE THIS WHOLE. MINI. SERIES. IDEA. Watching someone learn by using what is readily available (and not terribly expensive) and then sharing with us here is just... wonderful. I can't wait to see your process, progress, and paintings! Also, that pictionary comment is the story of my life, haha. I think your rhinos were a great mix of what makes the medium and your own work unique.
I hope you do more gouache videos! The color blocking is intriguing; I haven't been able to figure out how intentionally to blend between the ..."blocks". Your strawberries were fun - the way the outline and the block shape were offset gave the impression of form, not sure if you intended that but it was a neat effect.
I definitely recommend filbert brushes for gouache, they're my favourite! HJ white taklon filberts have been my staple for gouache for years. It's like painting with the nicest spatula... or a flipper. :P

ps tiny tp, if you use gouache straght from the tube, put some sort of wet kitcher towel under your gouache , i saw cullen doing that to keep paints fresh longer. I like both peaches depending on style of your painting, the first one looks much like a vintage classic while the second style I would use for more modern feel.
James Gurney is by far my favourite gouache artist on UA-cam. I’m love his Dinotopia work, and knew it long before I’d heard of UA-cam. You really did a great job on those rhino.
@@InLiquidColor I've followed James Gurney since I was literally in elementary school in the early '90s and would redraw and repaint his work on my own. He's amazing. I've long been wanting to buy his plein air instructional videos. I have Blick brand gouache but haven't used them much because I've been focused on improving my watercolors. I haven't been thrilled with them when I've used them but for ancillary reasons than the quality of the paints (#1, I'm not that skilled with them, #2 I was trying to put them in pans like watercolors for portability and that doesn't work.)
I blame the education system for not knowing any of this stuff haha. I was always encouraged to draw but I didn't even know watercolors we're a professional medium, let alone even have any concept of what gouache was! I took a total of four semesters of traditional art only in all my years of K-12, one year in 8th grade and one year in 12th. I adamently wanted to study art my freshman year, but was at a science magnet school and my jerk of a "guidance counselor" literally wouldn't let me sign up for it and put me in band instead where I wasted two years not learning how to play a clarinet 😂 I finally snuck in serior year but I don't recall ever using watercolor... Or oils for that matter! Graphite, charcoal, acrylic, pastels. Oof!
Denise, I have a love/hate relationship with gouache, currently we’re in the mostly hating it part. I’m using a rather inexpensive brand of gouache, RD. But I bought an pricey large tube of titanium white bc it’s used so often. The one thing I’ve learned is that it’s hard to blend colors on paper and better to do some color mixing beforehand. I either get it too thick risking cracking or the paint gets muddy. However painting with water mixable oils is a F’ing Dream compared to gouache, acrylics or inks. Blending on my canvas is miraculous and fulfilling while after learning the various techniques brought incredible success. I’ve painted with the water soluble oils on wood, canvas, Bristol board, smooth chipboard. Everything other than paper but I even tried that recently and quickly remembered why it doesn’t work, the paint, even when thinned with water is too heavy or thick. I think you’ll love it. I enjoyed watching you paint in this video but although you are an amazing artist, I missed your delicate touch that you achieve with watercolors. It seemed you didn’t really get into it in the same way. The rhinos were great. For gouache. See...there’s always that addendum. ‘for being painted in gouache’, as if it’s painted in tar or maybe bacon grease. You know, like it’s something that someone made by mistake. A huge exception is that I love highlights added in gouache like titanium white. I guess I’m a paint snob...oh my God. I am not any sort of snob. Well I am a cat snob, I admit. LOL. 🌸 Annie B.

Wonderful job Denise. I liked the first peach better. The only Gouache I've tried is the Arteza and I'm not a fan. I also have Turner Acryla Gouache. As a watercolorist I can't get the hang of working dark to light and the acrylic Gouache dries too quickly on my palette which seems so wasteful to me.
I honestly don't understand the paint of acrylic gouache at all :( i haven't used it, but if it dries like acrylic, I'm just not interested lol. I haven't used Arteza, but I can say I like the Schmincke way more than I liked Holbein, enough though many like Holbein. Different strokes! (Literally and figuratively haha)
Hi, I have these acrylics too, to start with it seemed like they would be wasteful, but I read up a little on them, and you can actually store them mixed with water in those tiny little resealable plastic jars which suited me well as I do not like them straight from the tube. These mixes will keep quite some time, and I liked being able to get the right consistency for the intial paint outs like that, then use a tiny dab of neat paint for any detailing with fine brushes. You can get extraordinarily sheer veils of colour using this methode. They are absolutely nothing like traditional gouache though, to us, though end results with a nice matte finish might seem similar. The techniques are completely different. Denise you did well with this hard to master medium, and your consistency looks just right. The only helpful, or possibly helpful thing I can add it don't take the dark to light thing as an absolute, working from darker midtones to light gets less mud and reserves the possibility of various tones of very deep lowlights, when you come to final detailing. I loved your painterly approach,,something that makes gouache such an interesting medium is you can go from really flat graphic representation right to masterly classic painting styles all in one medium, to the point where if not for the fact they are never on canvas some paintings could be mistaken for oils, especially in reproductions. For the best dark to light examples of how to apply paint looking at oils is always instructive, and often indicates how a single brush stroke can convey a lot. This works well with gouache where there can be a tendency to overwork the paint, giving muddy over-lightened passages. Oh, and try mixing with lighter colours rather than always with white, this can work well too.
Thanks for sharing. I just started experimenting with gouache. I put them in a palette box that I got from Amazon called the Transon Watercolor Palette box. They've only been in there for two weeks but they haven't dried any yet. I got the clear box with locking lid, not the one with the rubber lid. I'll be getting another one when I get some more tube watercolors.
Glad to see you demo gouache as its intended to be used (ie: not as watercolor substitute.) So many utube watercolorists use a watercolor approach with it.. why? Just use watercolor then. Gouache is an oil painters medium actually with the convenience of water base instead. I painted in oils for 40+ years and converted to gouache due to allergies. Yes, you're right.. gouache doesn't really work well to sub as watercolor. I can spot when that's been done. I often use both in the same painting letting watercolors shine where that's needed. Edit: In a pinch, when I've run out of a gouache pigment, I do use transparent watercolor pigment but mixed with an opaque like white or an another opaque pigment like ochre. Just saying this for those who want to try gouache style first without investing in new paints.
I'm just getting into gouache and I really enjoyed this video. I'm using the Arteza gouache my mom got for me for my bday this year. But as I use up tubes I plan on upgrading to Holbein. It is so fun learning a new medium. For Christmas I got a silver and gold holbein gouache. Just gotta wait to actually use it till then 😫 that's the hardest part.
I used Gouche in college an eon ago but was re-introduced to it by a youtube artist called Hullo Alice she is a phenom and you might look her up! I think you did a fair job and your one of several artists I have watched who has touted the virtues of Skillshare, I may have to go take a look!
I also can’t afford to jump into a new medium...paints new brushes etc but I do enjoy learning by watching others. Oh, and btw, I’ve recently discovered Skillshare and it is totally worth the money

You provided some great tips that will definitely help me work with it better. So far, I've used W&N and M. Gouache is something I have dabbled in, but have found out that I have just confused myself. I have put that a bit on hold and I am slowly starting to master watercolors first. Learning both watercolor and gouache at the same time is a bit confusing. I like both peaches!
Why is your Holbein your favourite? Have you tried Schmincke Horadam gouache? I'm asking because I can't decide between the two. They are both impossible to find here in Canada, so I will have to order from Jackson's (as always, lol). Thanks, Eve! :)
I started with horrible strawberries too!! (Not that yours are awful) It taught me that rage quitting art is real. You took to it really well though and this series is an excellent idea.
I always find gouache super hard because you're right -- you do need to use more paint, but my hand is so used to watercolor and diluting everything that I always inevitably try to work with it like watercolor instead of approaching it like acrylic... That and the color change is always SO DRASTIC from wet to dry that it gets very confusing... Anyway -- nice video :D. My favorite painting instructor person to watch is always Stephen Quiller... and that's not even because i'm all that interested in his paintings (landscapes are probably my least favorite kind of representational art), but rather because he's not afraid to mix the mediums up and just do whatever. He's also a super great resource for how individual pigments are going to react to each other and watching his videos really changed how I thought about how pigments interacted in my own work. I never knew about Ultramarine Violet till him -- and hooo boy did that make a big difference. It very quickly became my favorite color.
Indeed! I think most gouache masters use it thinner than I did here, but I just love the texture so much I went a little hogwild haha. It's definitely a switch, but I think for me using them so different like this helps me to compartmentalize the two mediums.
i need a new white and was lookig for titanium... only to find out it is called permanent white,lol. Much to my suprise i was disapointed with the schmincke 'deck weiss' becaus i am so used to their smooth blending paints. plus the tube is not working for my hands, is the winsor one plastic in total? caus if its the same tube as the shinhan pass i will switch to winsor,to make life easy on my hands
I follow 2 artists that paint in gouache,Lena Rivo and Jared loves to draw.Jared suggests laying down a watery first layer and then thicker layers on top.Myself I found gouache easier than acrylic. 😀
I prefer the zinc white, it had more depth to it, although in gouache you might say layers, lol, but it had more variations in the colors, the colors were more varied, there appeared to be more of them, so it appeared more realistic, more alive than the other peaches, the colors were more natural as well...warmer. I am learning to create tangle patterns. I love it. It's been copyrighted, called "zentangle" but I am drawing these patterns and love it! I will be learning how to create my own tangle patterns. I will be learning off of UA-cam how to draw and watercolor. I have always wanted to draw and watercolor. I have everything I need now. I just need suggestions on a youtube artist with lessons on to how to draw for watercoloring, and lessons on how to watercolor. I'd love to join skillshare, but I'm disabled with severe spinal disease am in my chair all day so I cannot work and my medication costs without a drug plan is $700 a month. I thank you so much for doing lessons for people like me.

This video came at such a great time! I just bought a few gouache tubes to try out so I will definitely check out Leah's skillshare classes. I cannot stand Pictionary for that very reason...the PRESSURE! Hahaha!! Your application piece of the rhinos is absolutely wonderful. Is the dry time pretty quick with a thick application? I've dabbled in watercolors and dabbled in acrylics so just curious.
Yay! I'm so glad. The dry time is pretty quick, but since these aren't acrylic Gouache, they can be reactivated. You have to be more careful laying down glazes or layers, but it's easier to blend colors this way :)
Hey Denise. I remember that you mentioned in a video that you had mixed a custom daniel smith color straight from both tubes and placed in your perm pallet. Can you do this with any of the Daniel Smith tube watercolors? I exclusively paint with Daniel Smith at the moment and have a limited pallet. I have mixed on my pallet with water but wonder if mixing from the tube could potentially fill my small pallet. I wondered if you could do a video on this? Hmm, I think it's in my saying goodbye to quinacridone gold video :) You can do it with whichever colors you like, just keep in mind as always that certain colors have different properties and how well they get along with other paints.

jay gouache I love it,love the schmincke onces. so happy you got them; ps if you prefer a softer brush try a bit stiffer brush if you want those choppy strokes,becaus the stiffer brushes tend to handle gouache a bit better,still a wc brush though,but unlike my majestics, I prefer the davinci junior brushes for gouache...as to the white; you have two sorts,a mixing white and a covering white; covering white is not much fun mixing with and is mainly used for highlights and schmincke sells both. Though my experience is not with the horodam gouache,but with the hks designer gouache,please don't ask me the difference as they look the same to me and other than the name i couldn't tell it if my life depended on it. one of my favorite teachers is @myriamtilson and i adore her gouache studies

While I have never used Gouache...... I do use poster colours quite frequently for school purposes..... Can any one tell me what the main difference between the two types of paints at??
You might be interested in this: "Permanent White is the whitest, most opaque white. It is not recommended for mixing as it can reduce the lightfastness of some colours. Zinc White produces the cleanest and most lightfast tints and is therefore recommended for colour mixing." My favorite teacher of gouache is James Gurney, he has amazing skills and is a really good teacher. You can also pop by my Artwork By Mari UA-cam channel, I also use gouache and have lots of step-by-step videos for free!
I'm not gentle enough with my brushes and I ALWAYS get paint stuck in my ferrule because of that. With gouache and watercolor its fine because they can be cleaned. In acrylic, they turn into plastic. I used them for years when painting sculptures and I like them for that, but I don't find them easy to paint with on flat paper with, given the way I like to work.
@@InLiquidColor ah i see i only buy cheap brushed that i use for acrylic ( not on purpose though 😉 ) when i get better brushes ill make sure i only use them for water colour x
It's been asked for a lot over on Instagram, but I really, really don't enjoy the medium, and only have a small set of them myself. A larger set is really more necessary to fully get a feel for them, so we'll have to see how it pans out!
Very nice video, painting with gouache out of the tube is kinda a poor man's oil painting (and no messy cleanup afterwards). BTW, Zinc White is PW4, not PW6. PW6 is Titanium/Permanent White.

I’ve recently tried my hand at gouache too. I watched Painting with Jane and decided to do her reaper. I did use matte medium with my gouache and it worked beautifully. Gouache tends to dry fast and I wanted that layered ghostly effect. I also like the thick consistency, flat brush and paint straight from the tubes. Well done on your rhinos. I love the texture and depth.
coming from acrylic to watercolors, I used gouache in both watered down versions as well as thickly to transition. I love how you had such painterly strokes! it is absoulutly beautiful and something that cannot be done with watercolors
I did a little bit of water mixable oils years ago and definitely need to play with them again. The texture and mixing time is really fantastic!

Your gouache paintings look so lovely! I personally use Holbein artists gouache. If you like layering with muddying the last layer, you can try acryla gouache! 😊 Can't wait to see more of this series

Now I'm convinced I shouldn't do gouache. It looks too deliberate and exact for my skill level. And I thought the first peach looked more organic. So obviously even my perception is off. Though I'm not a realism style person . I appreciate those who are, but at just under a year into painting I'm starting to accept what is me. Very nice demo Denise. Thank you.
That's an interesting perspective! I actually don't find it exact at all! I make many "mistakes" but can fix them more easily than with watercolor. And you're absolutely allowed your own thoughts on the peaches! That's why I asked :) I like the sketchier nature of the second one and the process was more enjoyable, but looking at them afterwards, I can totally see that the first one looks more "painterly" :)

PW4- Zinc White and PW6- Titanium White have different properties. PW6 has a larger coverage (as you mentioned) and it helps to form color tints faster than PW4 that creates subtle touches. Also, PW4 resists much longer in time. The Zinc White was used by the great oil masters, so their paintings resisted in time as we all see today, while the Titanium becomes yellowish over time. Pw4 is recommended to be used especially for light and very light areas in a painting.
So fun to learn along with you...as you know I am also dipping my toe in the world of gouache and I'm excited to learn more. I'm also super excited to see more of this series!

If you want to keep your gouache wet in a palette I recommend the, Transon Watercolor Palette Box Airtight, on Amazon. All I do is spritz my paints once a week with water and it keeps them creamy.
Beautiful job! Those are some cute rhinos :) My favorite gouache artist is Myriam Tillson. Her UA-cam channel has a great tutorial for gouache as well that I've watched countless times.
James Gurney uses gouache quite often and he also uses a combo of watercolor and gouache in his work. His videos are so informative as he shares how and why he uses each type of watercolor. I have his video Gouache in the Wild, which is his plein air gouache work and there is lots of good stuff in that. One apparent obstacle he discusses is that his gouache palette dries out pretty quickly outdoors.

I hope you do more gouache videos! The color blocking is intriguing; I haven't been able to figure out how intentionally to blend between the ..."blocks". Your strawberries were fun - the way the outline and the block shape were offset gave the impression of form, not sure if you intended that but it was a neat effect.
I definitely recommend filbert brushes for gouache, they're my favourite! HJ white taklon filberts have been my staple for gouache for years. It's like painting with the nicest spatula... or a flipper. :P

ps tiny tp, if you use gouache straght from the tube, put some sort of wet kitcher towel under your gouache , i saw cullen doing that to keep paints fresh longer. I like both peaches depending on style of your painting, the first one looks much like a vintage classic while the second style I would use for more modern feel.
James Gurney is by far my favourite gouache artist on UA-cam. I’m love his Dinotopia work, and knew it long before I’d heard of UA-cam. You really did a great job on those rhino.

I have Blick brand gouache but haven't used them much because I've been focused on improving my watercolors. I haven't been thrilled with them when I've used them but for ancillary reasons than the quality of the paints (#1, I'm not that skilled with them, #2 I was trying to put them in pans like watercolors for portability and that doesn't work.)
I blame the education system for not knowing any of this stuff haha. I was always encouraged to draw but I didn't even know watercolors we're a professional medium, let alone even have any concept of what gouache was! I took a total of four semesters of traditional art only in all my years of K-12, one year in 8th grade and one year in 12th. I adamently wanted to study art my freshman year, but was at a science magnet school and my jerk of a "guidance counselor" literally wouldn't let me sign up for it and put me in band instead where I wasted two years not learning how to play a clarinet 😂 I finally snuck in serior year but I don't recall ever using watercolor... Or oils for that matter! Graphite, charcoal, acrylic, pastels. Oof!

Denise, I have a love/hate relationship with gouache, currently we’re in the mostly hating it part. I’m using a rather inexpensive brand of gouache, RD. But I bought an pricey large tube of titanium white bc it’s used so often. The one thing I’ve learned is that it’s hard to blend colors on paper and better to do some color mixing beforehand. I either get it too thick risking cracking or the paint gets muddy. However painting with water mixable oils is a F’ing Dream compared to gouache, acrylics or inks. Blending on my canvas is miraculous and fulfilling while after learning the various techniques brought incredible success. I’ve painted with the water soluble oils on wood, canvas, Bristol board, smooth chipboard. Everything other than paper but I even tried that recently and quickly remembered why it doesn’t work, the paint, even when thinned with water is too heavy or thick. I think you’ll love it. I enjoyed watching you paint in this video but although you are an amazing artist, I missed your delicate touch that you achieve with watercolors. It seemed you didn’t really get into it in the same way. The rhinos were great. For gouache. See...there’s always that addendum. ‘for being painted in gouache’, as if it’s painted in tar or maybe bacon grease. You know, like it’s something that someone made by mistake. A huge exception is that I love highlights added in gouache like titanium white. I guess I’m a paint snob...oh my God. I am not any sort of snob. Well I am a cat snob, I admit. LOL. 🌸 Annie B.

Wonderful job Denise. I liked the first peach better. The only Gouache I've tried is the Arteza and I'm not a fan. I also have Turner Acryla Gouache. As a watercolorist I can't get the hang of working dark to light and the acrylic Gouache dries too quickly on my palette which seems so wasteful to me.
I honestly don't understand the paint of acrylic gouache at all :( i haven't used it, but if it dries like acrylic, I'm just not interested lol. I haven't used Arteza, but I can say I like the Schmincke way more than I liked Holbein, enough though many like Holbein. Different strokes! (Literally and figuratively haha)
Hi, I have these acrylics too, to start with it seemed like they would be wasteful, but I read up a little on them, and you can actually store them mixed with water in those tiny little resealable plastic jars which suited me well as I do not like them straight from the tube. These mixes will keep quite some time, and I liked being able to get the right consistency for the intial paint outs like that, then use a tiny dab of neat paint for any detailing with fine brushes. You can get extraordinarily sheer veils of colour using this methode. They are absolutely nothing like traditional gouache though, to us, though end results with a nice matte finish might seem similar. The techniques are completely different.
Denise you did well with this hard to master medium, and your consistency looks just right. The only helpful, or possibly helpful thing I can add it don't take the dark to light thing as an absolute, working from darker midtones to light gets less mud and reserves the possibility of various tones of very deep lowlights, when you come to final detailing. I loved your painterly approach,,something that makes gouache such an interesting medium is you can go from really flat graphic representation right to masterly classic painting styles all in one medium, to the point where if not for the fact they are never on canvas some paintings could be mistaken for oils, especially in reproductions. For the best dark to light examples of how to apply paint looking at oils is always instructive, and often indicates how a single brush stroke can convey a lot. This works well with gouache where there can be a tendency to overwork the paint, giving muddy over-lightened passages. Oh, and try mixing with lighter colours rather than always with white, this can work well too.

Thanks for sharing. I just started experimenting with gouache. I put them in a palette box that I got from Amazon called the Transon Watercolor Palette box. They've only been in there for two weeks but they haven't dried any yet. I got the clear box with locking lid, not the one with the rubber lid. I'll be getting another one when I get some more tube watercolors.
They rehydrate well. I just spray them with some water & let them sit a minute & then go to town again.

Glad to see you demo gouache as its intended to be used (ie: not as watercolor substitute.) So many utube watercolorists use a watercolor approach with it.. why? Just use watercolor then. Gouache is an oil painters medium actually with the convenience of water base instead. I painted in oils for 40+ years and converted to gouache due to allergies. Yes, you're right.. gouache doesn't really work well to sub as watercolor. I can spot when that's been done. I often use both in the same painting letting watercolors shine where that's needed. Edit: In a pinch, when I've run out of a gouache pigment, I do use transparent watercolor pigment but mixed with an opaque like white or an another opaque pigment like ochre. Just saying this for those who want to try gouache style first without investing in new paints.
I'm just getting into gouache and I really enjoyed this video. I'm using the Arteza gouache my mom got for me for my bday this year. But as I use up tubes I plan on upgrading to Holbein. It is so fun learning a new medium. For Christmas I got a silver and gold holbein gouache. Just gotta wait to actually use it till then 😫 that's the hardest part.
I used Gouche in college an eon ago but was re-introduced to it by a youtube artist called Hullo Alice she is a phenom and you might look her up! I think you did a fair job and your one of several artists I have watched who has touted the virtues of Skillshare, I may have to go take a look!

Gouache is something I have dabbled in, but have found out that I have just confused myself. I have put that a bit on hold and I am slowly starting to master watercolors first. Learning both watercolor and gouache at the same time is a bit confusing.

I color block with watercolor all the time, in a light wash and then build up on it. Why do you not think you can color black with watercolor?
I started with horrible strawberries too!! (Not that yours are awful) It taught me that rage quitting art is real. You took to it really well though and this series is an excellent idea.
I always find gouache super hard because you're right -- you do need to use more paint, but my hand is so used to watercolor and diluting everything that I always inevitably try to work with it like watercolor instead of approaching it like acrylic... That and the color change is always SO DRASTIC from wet to dry that it gets very confusing... Anyway -- nice video :D. My favorite painting instructor person to watch is always Stephen Quiller... and that's not even because i'm all that interested in his paintings (landscapes are probably my least favorite kind of representational art), but rather because he's not afraid to mix the mediums up and just do whatever. He's also a super great resource for how individual pigments are going to react to each other and watching his videos really changed how I thought about how pigments interacted in my own work. I never knew about Ultramarine Violet till him -- and hooo boy did that make a big difference. It very quickly became my favorite color.
Indeed! I think most gouache masters use it thinner than I did here, but I just love the texture so much I went a little hogwild haha. It's definitely a switch, but I think for me using them so different like this helps me to compartmentalize the two mediums.
i need a new white and was lookig for titanium... only to find out it is called permanent white,lol. Much to my suprise i was disapointed with the schmincke 'deck weiss' becaus i am so used to their smooth blending paints. plus the tube is not working for my hands, is the winsor one plastic in total? caus if its the same tube as the shinhan pass i will switch to winsor,to make life easy on my hands

I follow 2 artists that paint in gouache,Lena Rivo and Jared loves to draw.Jared suggests laying down a watery first layer and then thicker layers on top.Myself I found gouache easier than acrylic. 😀

I prefer the zinc white, it had more depth to it, although in gouache you might say layers, lol, but it had more variations in the colors, the colors were more varied, there appeared to be more of them, so it appeared more realistic, more alive than the other peaches, the colors were more natural as well...warmer. I am learning to create tangle patterns. I love it. It's been copyrighted, called "zentangle" but I am drawing these patterns and love it! I will be learning how to create my own tangle patterns. I will be learning off of UA-cam how to draw and watercolor. I have always wanted to draw and watercolor. I have everything I need now. I just need suggestions on a youtube artist with lessons on to how to draw for watercoloring, and lessons on how to watercolor. I'd love to join skillshare, but I'm disabled with severe spinal disease am in my chair all day so I cannot work and my medication costs without a drug plan is $700 a month. I thank you so much for doing lessons for people like me.

This video came at such a great time! I just bought a few gouache tubes to try out so I will definitely check out Leah's skillshare classes. I cannot stand Pictionary for that very reason...the PRESSURE! Hahaha!! Your application piece of the rhinos is absolutely wonderful. Is the dry time pretty quick with a thick application? I've dabbled in watercolors and dabbled in acrylics so just curious.
Yay! I'm so glad. The dry time is pretty quick, but since these aren't acrylic Gouache, they can be reactivated. You have to be more careful laying down glazes or layers, but it's easier to blend colors this way :)

Hey Denise. I remember that you mentioned in a video that you had mixed a custom daniel smith color straight from both tubes and placed in your perm pallet. Can you do this with any of the Daniel Smith tube watercolors? I exclusively paint with Daniel Smith at the moment and have a limited pallet. I have mixed on my pallet with water but wonder if mixing from the tube could potentially fill my small pallet. I wondered if you could do a video on this? Hmm, I think it's in my saying goodbye to quinacridone gold video :) You can do it with whichever colors you like, just keep in mind as always that certain colors have different properties and how well they get along with other paints.

jay gouache I love it,love the schmincke onces. so happy you got them; ps if you prefer a softer brush try a bit stiffer brush if you want those choppy strokes,becaus the stiffer brushes tend to handle gouache a bit better,still a wc brush though,but unlike my majestics, I prefer the davinci junior brushes for gouache...as to the white; you have two sorts,a mixing white and a covering white; covering white is not much fun mixing with and is mainly used for highlights and schmincke sells both. Though my experience is not with the horodam gouache,but with the hks designer gouache,please don't ask me the difference as they look the same to me and other than the name i couldn't tell it if my life depended on it. one of my favorite teachers is @myriamtilson and i adore her gouache studies

I just saw that Doodle Date mixed their pan gouache with glycerin to keep it from trying. Have you had any experience with this?
Yep, didn't work on my Holbein, but I have a general video about adding glycerin and honey to watercolor.
While I have never used Gouache...... I do use poster colours quite frequently for school purposes..... Can any one tell me what the main difference between the two types of paints at??

You might be interested in this: "Permanent White is the whitest, most opaque white. It is not recommended for mixing as it can reduce the lightfastness of some colours. Zinc White produces the cleanest and most lightfast tints and is therefore recommended for colour mixing."

why do people hate acrylic? i find it so easy to work with 😊
I'm not gentle enough with my brushes and I ALWAYS get paint stuck in my ferrule because of that. With gouache and watercolor its fine because they can be cleaned. In acrylic, they turn into plastic. I used them for years when painting sculptures and I like them for that, but I don't find them easy to paint with on flat paper with, given the way I like to work.

It's been asked for a lot over on Instagram, but I really, really don't enjoy the medium, and only have a small set of them myself. A larger set is really more necessary to fully get a feel for them, so we'll have to see how it pans out!
I find gouache is easiest than watercolor. I simply use it just like acrylic paint
Very nice video, painting with gouache out of the tube is kinda a poor man's oil painting (and no messy cleanup afterwards). BTW, Zinc White is PW4, not PW6. PW6 is Titanium/Permanent White.
