I would also say that instructors/teachers influence the attitude towards gouache as well. My first watercolor class had a section on gouache, it was in the curriculum and the teacher was quite disparaging of it as he was a "fine" artist and considered gouache just for commercial use. This was in the 1980's not that long ago!

I did the exact same thing recently. I have tried a handful of other gouache brands but just can't get used to working with tubes, it slows me down! It's frustrating to waste paint and hard to rewet later (Specifically I tried W&N, SO HARD TO REWET!) I finally settled on M Graham, got the five color set, mixed some secondaries, let it all dry, and was thrilled with the rewettability. So I then bought another handful of earthtones and some secondary colors and I let all the colors dry in the palette. I just squeeze out fresh white when I need it and I'm very happy with this arrangement. Also I find M Graham generally extremely affordable as I'm located in the US. I just love that company, it's become my primary brand.

I only ever had a tube of white W&N gouache for highlights, but man, it dried hard as a rock on my palette if I didn't wipe it off my palette before letting it dry! I've been much happier with Schmincke, M. Graham, and Mission.

Sarah Burns is another gouache artist. I’ve learned so much from her. I’m a watercolor artist first. Once I figured out how to use gouache, I love it. That wasn’t the case when I first started with that medium. It’s a learning curve. Hope you feel better! Take care of yourself and come back when you can.

Pfft... people need to get over their rules. There is no wrong way to art. I have seen plenty of gouache artists slapping down colors in single layers like an impasto acrylic (obviously without the texture) and creating beautiful work. Ive seen artists start with a wash and put thick paint over the top. I've seen dozens of thin layers. If it works for you ... do it. If it doesn't work for you consider another option. So many judgmental Judy's (and John's) out there.

I wish you slapped down the paint the way you wanted to! I paint primarily with gouache and I am heavy handed and slather on the gouache.. I haven't had a problem with cracking yet. Paint how it feels good. Yeah, this is a review, but if it's not fun then what's the point? Just my thoughts. I am no expert but I paint how I like.. I tend to ignore technique...

Lately I've really been enjoying experimenting with gouache using just a tube of Schmincke's white gouache and mixing it with my White Nights watercolors. I have a jelly gouache palette but it's large and not as easy to just pull out and play around with. I have found that I do have more success with the underpainting and thin layers method, but I too am impatient to start building up thicker, more opaque layers 😅

Fun! That's the premise of the Mission Hybrid paints as well - just add white! :) I have learned a lot about underpaintings (especially from Mary) and that I am grateful for. I'm sure I'll eventually find other techniques I enjoy :)

From what I've heard, M Graham is less likely to crack on thicker applications but may result in some shinier spots due to the honey. Great video, loved the pre mixing colours, never thought of that. I use this set alongside a cheap set 12 for the price of 1 mg. I have the same cracking and they don’t fall out. Tried glycerin which helped slightly. The cheap ones really shrink and crack more. Stick with mg if you got the money. The lovely Rhino looked sad. I know don’t anthropomorphise. Thanks Denise.🇬🇧

It took me some research to choose M graham for my first gouache set. And it just feels so different from watercolor. It took a while. I wouldn't use a mijello palette. The color stains the plastic so much. I ended up using my glass palette and using fresh paint like acrylics/oils made it easier. I use my mijello palette for washes. And the paint does get moldy if you try to keep them wet, and I use boiled tap water with hydrogen peroxide. Just letting them dry and rewetting is better. I use a plastic brush to poke and move the gouache to get it creamy again. But once dried, (very subtle) they don't apply as opaque. But it's easier to get watercolor like washes and glazing.
I have also mixed zinc white with some of my QoR to see if the aquazol had an impact in the gouache. It did make it runnier than expected for some nice thin layers.
The titanium won't give you a super white white if you layer on top. I use masking fluid to preserve highlights like snowy mountain peaks.
    Take care and no worries.

I’ve been playing with gouache a lot lately, and was surprised at how much water I can add and still achieve amazing opacity! I like to call it the melted ice cream consistency, where it spreads so smoothly and still has amazing coverage. There are so many ways to use gouache (any medium, really), and I think unless you’re running into a specific hurdle you’re probably doing it right. I’ve struggled with the mechanics of mixing and keeping a workable palette. It gets so messy so fast. So I understand that sometimes it’s purely the mechanics of a different medium that make it less enjoyable than our comfort zone materials. Thanks for the great video!

Hello Denise, I think it’s important that you paint the way you want to. People need to realize that art is an expression of you (and themselves separately) and nobody can tell you that you are doing it wrong. That’s old thinking and thankfully that is slowly being removed. As long as you are happy, that’s all that matters. I’d love to see another gouache video where you just lather that paint on! Hope you are doing well❤️

For lightfast high quality I'll consider investing more in the future to m.graham as I have been buying and using large tubes of the titanum white gouache (2 fl.oz/59 ml) This allows me to mix my own gouache with watercolours I already own that are pigmented enough such as senellier and dr. ph martens liquid concentrated hydrus (also they are lightfast!)
In fact I just ordered an new tube!
the bargain sets like himi miya have a place too as fun and sheer quantity of paint matters. You will paint and practice more if the supplies are more affordable and that's valuable too! pigment info has recently become available and various artists have been doing lighfastness tests several of the cheap gouache colours are in fact lightfast according to these tests so we can always flag the problem colours. If its a long term concern still we can practice even more with jelly gouache and move to for sale originals to m.graham paint !
All is good to me. I still use non lightfast materials I just am aware of it when/if I do so (such as in sketchbooks ) or when I'm going to scan/photo and not sell the original.
Note So far I have had no issues re-wetting my gouache mixes but haven't done long term tests with the hydrus just with tube watercolours mixed with the white. Spray or eye dropper on some water (preferably distilled) before use. I'd say about 3 minutes and let it sit. Now for bright opaque white and super pale tones use fresh white from the tube. When you require less extreme opacity re-wetting is fine but max opacity is best fresh mixed. I am a cheepo with paint so I tend to save every scrap across various pallets and use almost all up later. I advise looking at pallet mixes and using that to create an artwork idea entirely to 'use up the paint'! This has inspired several great paintings I've made! Anyways have fun everyone!
    Also fun video, thanks!

I like to do gouache really thickly, just once, with no overlapping. If things weren't opaque enough, the same colour was made, and repainted. It becomes more like colouring in a design. I learnt it this way from a senior colour and design teacher who gave us lots of exercises. Not sure what is right, but it is what people get used to ........
I didn't think you would get a purple from the red and blue in this set. Surprising.
Hey Denise, I hope whatever you are going through health wise, that you will come out stronger and healthier soon. I am unwell tonight, so I don't like to be so sick that I can't work, or too tired to write or paint, so I know how it feels.

I do hope that you will have a healthier year! I have a difficult time with thinking that gouache is a permanent medium. When I was taught to use gouache it was for newspaper and circular ads. The ONLY gouache painting that was “saved” were the comics! I never knew why. The rest were thrown in the trash right after the “photo” plates were made, even the fashion painting plates, once sent on for reproduction they ended up in the trash bin! I like Turner gouache, mostly because of the color selection and I have painted thick and thin either works well if you take care of your surface. Thank you for sharing another amazing art experience with us, you get to the heart of the matter and continually knock our socks off! I am glad that you are able to create your art and videos at this time. Please be careful and get yourself healthy, this is important for your future life as well as your career. That humidity sounds insane. Even the most "wet" paints I have dry completely. The most I get is a slightly tacky surface on the brands that have a lot of honey. And usually not tacky enough to leave behind paint when you touch it either. And I do live right next to the ocean in an area with supposedly high humidity. I guess the temperatures and overall climate are just different. It's always so weird to see super shiny and wet palettes in these videos. Or even seeing people keep palettes in the fridge.

The cobalt teal has always been a problem, though the rest of my colors were okay back in California. Here, I even have some non-M. Graham paints that run amok haha. I hadn't thought about temperature but that's a reasonable factor as well!

@@InLiquidColor @In Liquid Color I only have a couple of m graham paints but they are all solid. My sennelier as well, I've heard they run a lot too. I wonder what makes the difference. I live on the coast of scotland so I'm right next to the water and it rains a ton. But the temperatures are pretty cold, there's a lot of wind and the air never feels particularly humid. Could also be the buildings, most windows here are required to have trickle vents so there's constant ventilation and the buildings I've lived in are all built in the 1800s so they have pretty high ceilings and not the best insulation. That might make a difference, who knows. I pretty much always have to soak my paints. But better that then having them run out of their pans I guess.

With m.graham, I’ve put dots on a ceramic dish and they don’t crumble or crack and rewet beeeeeautifully! If people are keeping it in the studio, I recommend using a sectioned off ceramic something instead of plastic.

Well you only need 3 colors - yellow, magenta, and cyan and then black and white though you can get those too. But those 3 primary colors and black as in 4 color process work - will give you millions of color. I would suggest anyone who wants to work with a limited palette- get a color recipe chart or card so you know how much to mix to get specific colors, i.e, the millions of colors theory. Printers who print millions of colors only work with cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Period. Now those who do spot color printing do use premixed colors I believe usually because a client picks the colors from a swatch and aren’t working from real life colors like from photos. The recipes will make it easier as will a scale that weighs in grams if you want consistent results.

Ive read that depending on the ambient humidity of where you live, m. Graham can pretty much stay liquid apparently. That was on the extreme end though like i think florida perhaps?

Sorry to hear that you are challenged again with health problems. I can so relate to that and I really wish you live in which you can cope with it and live in better health and with less worries. Social media should be the least of your worries I think.
This African Wild Dog is gorgeous, as I already remarked on Instagram. You caught it really beautifully. These are such intelligent animals that deserve some intrest.
I never tried gouache before even though I ordered a tiny staterset some time ago. In my eyes you did a great job.

I've never had an issue reactivating the Winsor and Newton permanent white gouache in a palette. It also never cracks. It sets up very evenly. With just a bit of water I can get full opacity. It's often so opaque that I have to blend it with a waterbrush to make it look more natural in my animal paintings.

Yellow + black would be a nice convenience green in your mixes! For muted yellow, I would mix yellow orange and add a touch of blue violet (both colors in between the ones you already have)

I really enjoyed your final painting - i love the fur effect you got! I've seen a few ways with working with gouache, and I've played around with a few, but I always seem to water them down so much I end up using them like watercolors (I just have an Arteza set that I bought for calligraphy work). I probably should just be using more white, but I avoid it out of habit. :P
Wishing you all the best with your recovery

My friend is a gouache artist who happens to love watching nature documentaries as a pastime, and one of his favorite species of wild animal is the African wild dog. I'll have to send him a link to this video.
Fun fact: I actually gave him a tube of M. Graham gouache in Cerulean Blue as one of his Christmas gifts one year, as he mentioned that it was one of his favorite colors and that he'd never even heard of M. Graham paints before.

For the scent-sensitive, how does the gouache compare in scent to their watercolors, fresh from the tube?

    • @NamiNaeko
      @NamiNaeko 3 роки тому +1

They aren't as strong smelling as their watercolors and they do dry completely so if there is any smell it only comes when they are fresh out of the tube.
I mixed some glycerin in mine when I put some in pans and even then, when rewet they do not smell

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  3 роки тому +1

I only have the five colors, but didn't notice any scent! Like Nami said, they dry (unlike their watercolors) so I think that helps.

Wonderful aliveness in the eyes of the dog. I love my M. Graham gouache. Only use it indoors but have had no problem with mold. Do think I might pop for a Holbein tit. white for max opacity, since the honey does seem to cut it back a bit. I have been painting with watercolor for months now, but love gouache so much that I find myself painting with watercolor as though it were gouache, anyway, in many instances. Must get back to the gouache soon😺

For someone who claims to be uncomfortable with gouache, you seem to do a really good job! 5 of the colors I used to find as useful additions to my gouache palette are: alizarin crimson, a true yellow ochre, burnt sienna, magenta and a vivid green. You do a really good job at creating those earth tones, but you might find it easier to use the more glowing actual earth tone. If you want to see some really fun and interesting gouache techniques, you might want to look at the manuscript illustrations from various cultures, particularly old Persian poetry and/or Indian paintings.
