- The Strymon Flint has become one of the "must" have John Mayer pedals. But when does he actually use it live and what are his settings? Those are all answered in today's video!

Cool video man! Regarding the tube versus harmonic tremolo sides of the pedal it’s hard to choose a favorite. For my project I use the tube side more often but for recording purposes or in other live settings I often love using the harmonic mode. Just different sounds for different situations. Same with the reverbs. I use them all depending on how I feel
Just subscribed- I'm mostly amazed he doesn't use a switcher at all.

Would be great to know how he uses klon vs katana as both are solo boosts of sorts.
Katana is more as a true clean boost, sometimes always on for songs (Belief is one example). Then he may use it to boost a solo if it needs more volume. The Klon is more of a boost with some added gain as well, not a lot, but more than the Katana, and used consistently with stacking the TS10! Hope that helps!

Just picked up the v1, the tremolos sound great! The 60's reverb doesn't have that nice drip effect, sounds mediocre but still isn't too bad. The 70's reverb sounds best in my opinion compared to the rest amps reverb is always superior.
This is exactly why I prefer the flint. I can’t stand the drip but to each their own. The trem side is definitely the superior side though no doubt
I like my Flint v1 reverb as an always on, so I have it set to be far… earlier (if we’re talking clock face settings) so not really like JM.
I then use a Golden Reverb for bigger verb and then a Neunaber Inspire v2 for loadsa verb. Love them all.
Why so many verbs? Why not just buy something like a FM3? Impress more with your playing- not just effects. Best players can entertain with an unplugged acoustic. I am looking to grab a Flint V2. Is that still your recommendation? I had a Supa-Trem that people rave about and a Ventris Dual. Neither blew me away. This flint Trem sounds great. The Boss TR2 sounded good. I played one at GC. I also bouth a FM9 which sounds best of all. Do check out the FM3. It can compliment your current rig.
@@MOAB-UT I have three because it’s my favourite effect. And so I can do all the levels of reverb I want - from always on, then big, then super massive!
Any idea what the context was when the Troubadour photo was taken? It’s settings do seem a bit different, but I noticed nothing is plugged into the outputs… maybe the settings also weren’t setup for the show yet?
The photos of his rig from that show were taken after! The output cable had just been taken out before the photo was shot!

What knob settings does he use when he goes Tubescreamer TS10 into Klon Centaur. I build a new pedalboard with a JHS Bonsai (TS10 mode) into a new J. Rockett Audio Designs Archer Select (with Klon 1N34A diodes).
Yeah I got a Wampler moxie (ts10) and tumnus (klon) and am also curious where to start cause I can ballpark it from there
@@swiftorbitits to going to be different depending on what amp he is using and the same goes for you. So many variables but he keeps the gain quite low on the klons almost always

Do you have a two rock? If not your settings are going to be based on your amp using your ears. If you have a cheap amp don’t expect much. Good amp is like the foundation of your tone. Most people focus on the pedals too much. A low power amp isn’t going to take much to get to overdrive. Speaker choice also is pretty complicated and as important as amp. Guitar - as long as you can play it and it’s a strat you’re not going to hear that much difference. Pickup swaps are such a waste of time.
Your accent is super interesting. Candian but with a hint of Irish? Is your family from Newfoundland?
Justin, I'm not sure if you've done a video on this yet, or know, but why does John use pedals the way he does now? What I mean is, I know that was one era, maybe the Bigger Things era, he had a lot in the rack (or elsewhere). Do we know if he just enjoyed stepping on physical pedals instead of footswitches just being labeled? I mean, I agree with him. I'd much prefer pedals. I am just curious if he ever said anything about it.
Good question. I’ve thought about this topic as well. I remember watching that very old Rig Rundown where he had the Bob Bradshaw switching system. Maybe it’s because John likes to tweak his setting as he goes
You can see him adjust pedal settings while playing live with dead and co so id guess its just so he can tweak them whenever mid song

He uses tremolo for Gravity? Which part? I've never heard/noticed it

It’s subtle, but once you know to listen to it, you’ll notice it’s there.
Am I seeing it wrong or is it only the input jack of the pedal being used in that first shot of the flint? Where does the signal get out?
The problem is that no two people sound the same on the same instrument, same amp, same settings, same pedals, same settings.
Our sound is in our hands and touch.
If he has the Flint, I wonder why how/if he uses the Golden Reverberator.
Probably Golden Reverberator it’s the main reverb unity and the flint is an extra touch and not an “always on” pedal.
Then I wonder how he uses the bricasti stereo rack reverb and if he uses the built in amp reverbs.
I have the Flint V2. The reverb is extremely "meh". The harmonic trem is godlike however.
I sold my v1 flint last year but loved the plate & hall modes on the verb side

Respectfully, I disagree man. My v2 reverb is so lush. It’s the most western surf sound I think I’ve ever heard produced in real time. It’s an incredibly diverse effect. Whether for the Mayer thing, slide guitar, surf guitar, ambient noise, it’s one of the best reverbs I’ve used personally. Just out of curiosity, what would/did you replace yours with??
@@BBWiest22I have a V1 Flint, and while the reverb is great (all 3 imo) the Catalinbread Topanga does the spaghetti western/surf reverb better than the Flint.
I am in the market. What do you recommend instead then. I like it since it has Trem. too that I am into theses days. Getting a tube amp. that does not have Rev. or Trem. built it. The builder told me that it makes it quieter and more reliable by not including those circuits. Maybe he was just being cheap but I believe him. About 50% of the Fender Princeton Rev. in GC don't work (Rev. and Trem.) That is a high failure rate.

You put a lot of work into this video. It simply would have been more effective if it was a tad more concise. Sure, talk about settings for a minute... maybe two but that is about all that is needed. Showing his settings on stage was cool. A lot of your general content was actually pretty good.
Anyway, do things your way. Maybe I am wrong- this is just one mans simple opinion.
