GAS N' GO - Strymon Flint

  • The Strymon Flint could be Ryan's ultimate pedal. It combines reverb and tremolo. Followers of our UA-cam channel already know about his love for reverb, and listeners to our podcast know that tremolo is something he can't pronounce, or keep off of his pedal board. That makes this demo one of our most in-depth GAS N' GO videos to date.

    Regarding the "no volume control" at 9:10. Flint absolutely has a boost or volume cut setting. It's just one of the hidden settings that can be accessed via holding both buttons down. You can also change the order of the effects that way, and some other things.

    someone else mentioned this is the best flint demo on the web and I agree. I feel like the sound is clear, it’s well explored, and the pedal sounds awesome. others have bad sound, bad playing, or they don’t really know how to use the pedal. great stuff.

    First time listening to your videos. But I just wanted to say that every time you began playing something, it sounded like the beginning of a great song to be made. Your playing is very tasteful, unpredictable like a good book; each phrase leaves you guessing what you will play next and the pedal backed you up all the way. Thank you for not having a 13 minute video of pentatonic blues runs, although that's always great too when needed.

    I can match this pedal to the trem on my 64 Super Reverb, but the Super can’t get as slow or intense and throbbing as the Flint, which is where it really stands out. And I actually prefer the ‘61 harmonic trem to the amp’s tremolo. I’d say the 60s reverb setting is also nearly indistinguishable. Great demo.

    Penetration!, Hey have a question, if you use it with a Delay, put it after the delay (Delay > Trem > Reverb)?

    • @scottwilliamson8887
      @scottwilliamson8887 6 років тому +1

      David Walker depends how you want the pedal to interact with your delay repeats. If you put it after delay the delay repeats will be affected by the tremolo, put it before and the repeats will be unaffected

    Check out Electro Harmonix's Oceans 12 pedal for drippy surf reverb. Not only can it drip, but it has a 'spring kick' where the pedal reacts as if it was a spring tank that got kicked. Far more options than this and it costs less too.

    It sounds great,I have a Big Sky.
    One issue with Strymon,at least my Big Sky is with only -3db of cut(Line6 and Eventide have -20db or more cut available)is that by going full wet with long trails the volume get's way too loud(trails stack up much more than 3db).Bummer,Strymon seems all done with firmware revisions.

    Well done would love one, to go with my Deco, wonder what STEREO would add?

    • @strymonmatt110
      @strymonmatt110 8 років тому +1

      Deco/Flint combo is an awesome setup. Using the Wide Stereo Mode on the Deco would provide a stereo signal to the Flint (if internal TRS Stereo jumpers are set) which will maintain this separation for the dry signal when the Flint is both bypassed and engaged. However, when the reverb on the Flint is engaged, the processed reverb effect from either side (LEFT or RIGHT) is sent to BOTH outputs regardless of which input received the signal =]

    • @shckltnebay
      @shckltnebay 8 років тому

      +Strymon Matt so you're saying stereo signal is not maintained when the reverb is engaged? I thought the reverb side maintained analog dry through?

    • @shckltnebay
      @shckltnebay 8 років тому

      +Strymon Matt by the way I did get a flint and the El cap.

    • @strymonmatt110
      @strymonmatt110 8 років тому +1

      It still will maintain the stereo signal, just when you use the reverb from the Flint, the reverb effect is sent to both outputs. The deco signal will still be split into left and right

    • @shckltnebay
      @shckltnebay 8 років тому

      The tremolo side seams to maintain the stereo signal too.

    This pedal sounds so good! Too bad about the price...though, it’s a close call being a two-in-one? Not the same, but the EHX Oceans 11 hits many of these “notes”. If the Trem section of the O11 had Harmonic mode, I would say it had the Flint beat?
    Still want this pedal 🥺

    • @druwk
      @druwk 4 роки тому

      Sonic Warfare Still using the O11, but use the Reverb plus Tremelo most of the time, or just the Plate setting. Would be nice to be able bring them both in together, or loose the Tremelo? May have to try and send some pedals down the line, and pick up a Strymon?

    • @sonicwarfare6401
      @sonicwarfare6401 4 роки тому +1

      @@druwk The O11 is a pretty great pedal, very versatile. The Strymon is completely different. It's not as versatile, but what it does is amazing. I actually played it through a deluxe reverb when I first bought it and ABed the tremolo and spring with the amps tube loaded spring and trem, they sounded close to identical. If you use many different reverbs, the O11 is the better option. If you use a lot of tremolo, plus just classic reverbs, the Strymon is awesome.

    • @druwk
      @druwk 4 роки тому +1

      Sonic Warfare in retrospect, I wish I had just bought the Strymon first! I have spent over $300 on other pedals that don’t do what I want? I am really more about the “Vintage” vibe. Have toyed around with the more esoteric settings, but ultimately, I want to concentrate primarily on playing my guitar as a guitar.
      I have been working up my lead playing, but I am also a singer, so I can’t pull off setting up crazy textures for specific sections. Trying to move to K.I.S.S.
      I guess this is a case of, if you want to spend the least amount of money on gear, buy the expensive gear that you want first.
      Thanks for the review, and experience.

    • @sonicwarfare6401
      @sonicwarfare6401 4 роки тому

      @@druwk The good thing about music gear is it usually retains its value. If the pedals you aren't using still work fine, you can make most of your money back by selling them. See how much you can get for them on Reverb or locally. For me, I live in the middle east and most of my gear is from aboard, so I can actually profit from selling locally (for example a Mexican fender costs more here than an American would in the states). Check the market, save up,
