The soldering on the backside of the first LED board actually looked so much like art, it's almost a pity that one can't see it on the finished product.

Yet it's a crazy slow and wasteful way to wire things up.

I really enjoyed this! I've used clear plastic that was lightly sanded on the insidede to diffuse light as well, works great.
Here's a fun custom trick of mine!
I've done custom auto body for ages. I can change the color of instrumentation inside the car. The best thing, is to go to the candy isle at the store. Many colorful and semi translucent colors of plastic are available for candy containers, as well as some disposable plastic drink containers as well. I also use colored reflectors for bicycles that have the backing removed. I remove the gauge panel and carefully disassemble it, then I carefully chop out the blue for brights indicator, then the green for signal flasher and so on, then I trim out the bits of disposable translucent colored plastic I want to use and glue them in place carefully.
My car has yellow signal indicators now, the others are all different as well. Using colored bicycle reflectors is cool too, because they have a textured pattern that adds a new dimension as well.
    Have fun!

acetone vapor also works with some plastic! just leave it suspended above an acetone bottle overnight.

Makes me wanna build some props, you know what cool? In the states cops had computers (called data terminals) in their cars back in the 1980s... old amber screens etc.... that would be a cool prop!

I think the best LED effect is a bunch of self-blinking LEDs in a panel! 👍 Ah, that satisfying randomness... 😏

My WS2812B matrix was labeled wrong. So the DOUT was actually the data in. (Also note, that these modules are very sensitive for voltage peaks, so a benchtop power supply can damage it.)

A cheap shower curtain works well as a good diffusing material and you can use it in many sizes or layers to get a good effect.
You can even colour the curtain to use with various white LED's to get the desired effect.

I would use the RGB matrix to display some dynamic yet not very useful info as bar graphs:
      - speed of typing in the last seconds
      - weight of the user :)
      - CPU usage
      - fan speed
      - etc.

A quick note on those 5V LEDs: You can just take the same Power Supply you use for the Arduino. USB is already 5V, so no need for a second PSU. Just don't go overboard, and look at the PSU to not overload it.

..and you listed half-baked "Instructables" instead of Neopixel uberguide from adafruit. This half-baked half-done "instructions" ALWAYS forget about resistor and ~1000uF capacitor. It is actually lifesavers for neopixels matrixes. You need to be 200% sure that matrix from random assembler from China have a resistor before first LED. Some strips have both resistor and capacitor on each LED, but usually it's just a capacitor. So if something went slightly wrong, first "pixel" will die and all matrix went down.

As you apparently intend to play some games or possibly even listen to music on your console, may I suggest that you add some old-school sound reactive disco lighting?
