Thanks to ArtistWright's short, sweet & snappy tutorials - what I forgot (lost) is quickly found. My "go to reference site. Now making a collection of custom brush strokes / Styles.

So glad I found your channel. Absolutely LOVE your tutorials thank you so much 💗 I'm very new to Affinity Designer and learning so much from you thank you so much 💗💗💗
Very helpful indeed, and not a single second was wasted here. Thanks for the effort! Oh, and I really liked the fact you portioned that video, makes it way easier than sitting through x minutes straight (at least for me).
Thanks a lot for this tutorial! Very helpful and your instruction are so detailed and well-organized which leaded me to learn a lot more than just the main topic. Totally a great tutorial 👏🏼
Awesome tutorial! Thank you very much, I'm very used to illustrator and although many people say it's an easy transition from one program to another that hasn't been the case for me. Thank you again, I'll be watching all your other tutorials.
Can you make patterns without saving a jpg ? Like in adobe illustration (swatches pattern) . I think the solution you show affects the quality of the pattern.
You can obviously save a pdf of it so it stays vector. But you cant save as an actual pattern like Adobe. Yes in this tutorial you save the pattern as a png /jpeg and that's bitmap so not vector anymore. All you need is one good square plate if you are adding it to a site like redbubble and that site can repeat it
@@ArtistWright I think IMHO it affects the quality and it's very slow for the kind of vector art I'm making. It's very frustrating the only alternative I found that can make something similar to vector swatches is Graphic for mac/ios that has not been updated in the last couple of years.
Have you seen my other pattern tutorials, you can create a larger pattern by using symbols to duplicate each plate. This software is getting better with each upgrade so I think they will have something similar to what you want in the future
I agree, I too wish these "VECTOR" Patterns & Brushes really were Vectors. Coming from Adobe It's weird to mix the Raster Patterns/Brushes into Vector (SVG) it does have an affect on the quality. Hopefully we'll have the ability to create these as editable VECTORS SOON! TY
This video is great! Thank you. I do however wonder if you are able to change the pattern colour after inserting it as a png? Not just the background colour.
Thank you, I love it! Your channel is my most wanted. By the way, have you ever cut an object made with the expand stroke? I've been trying to find out how to do it.
Hello! When you expand the stroke, its technically just a shape. So you would then use the boolean operations as normal. Lay your expanded stroke above another shape (In the layer stack), select both, then click the minus symbol (boolean operation) check out my tutorial on how to use them ua-cam.com/video/JrbW9vT3wA8/v-deo.html
How can you take a repeating pattern you created and use it in Affinity Photo? For example, if you had a photo portrait of your dog and wanted to background removed and replaced with a repeating pattern of a paw print? I am new to Affinity Photo btw. Thanks for the great tutorials!
In affinity photo - Place your repeat pattern tile (jpeg, png) on the layer behind your dog and make sure it's selected, then go to Layer > New pattern layer from selection > now scale it up or down to your liking by dragging the corner of the pattern tile
Again, this is another really helpful tutorial. It's well-organized and has a clear, logical progression. I'd say you have a strong teaching background. I may have missed this piece, but do styles support the pixel persona? Thanks!!!!
Thanks for the feedback, I actually have no teaching background at all, but as I love using this program I decided to create the kind of tutorials I would have loved to watch when I was learning (bear in mind there were almost no tutorials on Affinity in the beginning). My frustrations of learning alone lead to me creating these once I became familiar with this software
I managed to get some to work, need slightly different commands and actions, must write them down! But clicking on the list you show at 11:58 does not bring back the central control line for me.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Now I follow all your videos. Thank you for the excellent work. I have a question. I want to sell patterns. What do you think is the best format to sell on Etsy?
I'm not sure which the best one is. I did sell patterns on Etsy for a short time. But I soon found out that some people would buy my patterns and repackage them along with a few others and sell them as their own. Was very hard to get them taken down. I guess it's kind of normal now when selling digital items
Not sure if it the type of content you are into but could you give us an example of how you’d use affinity designer to make a party invitation? Tying in some of these styles would look great on an invitation for print! Thanks
Thanks Michele, no it's not possible as they are Bitmap Fills. But ofcourse there are other ways, check out my other tutorials mentioned in this video all on the subject of patterns
Fantastic video overall! I followed along on my computer! Question on the repeat patterns to make a style: Since they end up being bitmaps, and if you want to use them on large print on demand projects, what size should you create the art boards for the patterns to start? Or, is it the size on export to png that matters? What should that be? Thank you!
Thanks Jill, that's a good question. I tend to make them 1080 pixels square. It all depends on the size of the product you are putting them on and the size you want the pattern to be on said product. On t shirts I've always found this came out well. But if it were on a bedsheets I might go larger. One inactivate that pattern style, I always tend to make the pattern smaller when playing with those resizing handles. But if I go bigger when those handles are shown I need to be careful.
Tried to follow this tutorial with the latest version of Designer and the tools seem to have altered. Under the Fill Tool in Pixel Person there only seem to be Current Layer, Current Layer & Below, Layers Below as Source Options. Might you consider a refreshed version because it seems highly promising.
You must use the gradient tool and you will see the handle. If you can't see it, go to the appearance panel and select the pattern layer then you select gradient tool
Yes there is, in the tutorial I add a colour and play with it in the appearance panel and then play with blend modes. you can do that then create a new style from that.
looks simple. when I did it, and selected a shape to use the new pattern for the fill, the pattern was stretched out, it did not fill with the pattern by repeating it. any ideas?
Is there an easy way to create a circular grid and evenly space numbers/text around it? Specifically, I'm looking at creating a circular Habit Tracker Wheel and numbering the days of the month around it.
@@ArtistWright I've played around in PowerPoint and Affinity Designer, but can't quite seem to figure out an easy way to create them. I'm also not quite sure how to evenly space and center the numbers without doing them one at a time.
See my tutorial on creating a watch, maybe some useful tips that would help you to create what you want in terms of numbers around a circle. You could use the donut tool to create the wheel. Then use the pie tool to create your evenly spaced out sections and clip that inside the donut. Then draw out a circle to the size of the donut and then click on the text tool. Now select the circle (using the text tool) so that the text follows the outline of that circle
I've been importing some old pdfs created with Freehand. There are rectangular areas that have simple fills that Freehand had as templates. I'm trying to change the sizes of these rectangles without distorting the original patterns. Is there a way to maintain the patterns in this circumstances and use them as fills as I did with Freehand? Not a graphic artist so I'm trying to not have to create these sets of fills from scratch.
Hi there, it's very difficult for me to answer that without a visual aid, and I've not heard of freehand. But simply put, if you have a repeatable tile, you can resize the whole thing with no problem
@@ArtistWright You haven't heard of aldus freehand because it's ancient. Was a competitor of Illustrator back in the day. But it worked for me until last year. I can resize the images, but the fill pattern is linked within the image instead of acting independently. What I'm trying to do is to disconnect the outline of the image to the fill within it.
@ktpinnacle Ah I see. So you have square shapes and the designs are clipped inside. If you look at the layers panel you will see that. You can either drag the designs out of the square shape in the layers panel. Also if you want to resize the square but don't want that affecting the designs within, just check the box that says 'lock children'
@@ArtistWright Interesting. The way that Designer imported the pdf over is tied to what I'm seeing here. The outline and fill are locked together in the layers list. Can't seem to separate them. And when I go to lock children (who an odd nomenclature), the fill will still move with the outline (and increase in size if I increase the size of the rectangle) but it won't leave the original outline of the rectangle. Thanks for your time. I think this will require more to solve, especially with a relative graphic newb like me. Have a good evening.
Watch my other pattern tutorials and you will learn how to create repeat patterns. It's basically a bunch of black and white circles on top of each other. I copied and pasted them all over the place
Now this only needs to work with vectors instead of only bitmaps. And this is 2 years old and nothing has been done to be bring pattern swatches to affinity. D;

Does anyone has tried this and did not find the noise setting ? I do not have it in the colour panels, I only have opacity. I have the V2 version of affinity. Thanks.
@@ArtistWright And I actually have another question ! I have followed your tutorial (thank you for all this knowledge) and when I am finished and that I actually upload my tile, the edge of the pattern is blank/transparent ! I have tried to make the document smaller so that the pattern tile goes beyond the actual designing space as there can be no transparent edge, the edges don't overlap anymore... (I hope you understand, english is not my first language...) Well, when I try to use the tile again, I have this transparent edge ! It didn't show so much on Affinity, as the transparent edge stays infinitely small no matter how much I zoom, and you actually say in the tutorial not to mind the lines. But once in Printify, that's the only thing you can see, and when I add a background behind the repeating pattern, I can see the colour, around the tiles. I hope it makes sense. Thank you again for everything !
I see, so usually affinity will show a line where it looks like it doesn't connect but it does. Obviously in your case your design isn't in the right placement. Double check that your square is actually. Square by looking at the dimensions in the transform panel (bottom right). After that you can check the placement on the x y axis down there too. I usually use snapping to get it right. But to make sure check the x y
When I export to png, it won't have a transparent background unless. 1, I go to the colour tab in document setup and select transparent from there. Or 2, select my whole design and export 'selection only'.
Seem to be a few different things on Mac. We do not have your nice layout for selecting PNG etc for export, nor is there an option to add noise under the colourwheel! Also my shape will not add to styles unless it splits into components which will not go back to the way they were on the first shape. It is a good tutorial, but none of it works for me. I do not have anything like your built-in styles options either.
for noise - click on the opacity circle under the colour wheel and it switches to it. I have no idea why you cannot add styles as you can even add them on shapes that arent closed.
I come back to this video EVERY single time I need to create a pattern. Your tutorial is great. Thanks and keep up the excellent work.

OMG there's no ability to do vector patterns at all 🤯
Well you can make vector patterns, just not this way as they are bitmap pattern fills. I'd love the option to do this with vectors
Does Affinity really call blend modes? Fill styles?
