JB sounds hotter than the JB jr , JB has its iconic chunky dark full sound to it, But the JB jr retains alot of the single coil characteristics, JB jr definitely sounds brighter than the JB and sounds more crisp. Aesthetically I prefer the Rosie but Semi Oranj Jangstang sounds better in my eyes.
Love your breakdown, I agree with it all! I also prefer the oranj sound overall but prefer Rosie’s look 🌹
@@NirvanaGuitars Gibson Nashville vs Gotoh, for a Mustang? Heard the Nashville is better?
The iconic jb sound is anything but dark
I really liked how the JB Jr sounded through the Turbo Distortion (JB sounded too compressed), but preferred the full-size JB through the SansAmp (Jr sounded too thin). Great vid!
Thank you! That is exactly why I used both distortion pedals 😊 the pickup's strengths definitely show differently depending on the distorted tone
Im thinking about putting JB Jrs in my Jag in a few years, it came stock with single coils but I might leave it as is. either that or put some other type of hot rail in the bridge position because I dont want to deal with routing out cavities
Great video! I feel like the JB Jr sounded slightly more Nirvana than the JB, but I was really surprised how similar they sound. Well done Seymour Duncan!
Your a man after my own heart. I started playing guitar in 92 after hearing Nevermind. Love the channel and collection
The jb jr sounds more tight and focused . They both sound good . Great video!
That’s a great way to put it! Thanks 🙂
in my opinion, i love the darker sound of the full size JB, but the JB Jr still sounds amazing
That's where I'm at! Can't beat the full size JB, but the Jr holds up well
Great video as usual - Loved the Timelapse portion! 🎉
Thank you! I am still learning the tech/repair side of guitars, so it felt great to be able to do this mod by myself 🥳
Both sounds so good, but I have to admit, the JB Je really surprised me and his so much a good pickup, I think I even prefer it to the full-size JB…
The JB with the distorted parts seems unbeatable but the junior on things like the clean on heart shaped box is so good
The JB is hard to beat, but the JB Jr definitely has it's strengths! I also really liked it for Heart Shaped Box
This was an excellent demo! Thank you
Thank you for watching! 😃
Love These videos! Just to let you know that red on red look is awesome
Thank you for the continued support! I also love the red on red 😍
I personally liked the JB Jr. the best. The bass was tighter and the mids were more full sounding while the full size JB sounded too thin and compressed. I've read that a 250k pot helps to remove the nasally, over-compressed sound the full size JB can get with super hot pedals.
Dude thanks! Never understood the top shape and it’s to hang vertically ! 👏🏼
Cool video, keep up the good work!
Thank you!
Roseland setup looks killer on the jagstang
Лучший разбор звукоснимателей!
I love how JB sounds on clean tone, but JB Jr sounds way better with distortion than JB full size. Anyway, they're both damn good
Can’t go wrong with either!
I love the sound of that JB!! I think it’s my favourite Humbucker but at the same time I think the JBjr is cool because of how it can be put into the space of a single coil but it is a Humbucker
Exactly how I feel! The JB is super hard to beat, but it's awesome to have a single coil sized humbucker
I could barely make out a difference on both pickups with the DS2, but the full sized JB easily wins with the SansAmp, especially on single note picking you could hear the brittleness of the JB Jr's single coil characteristics while the full sized JB just fills out a lot more sound
I really like the clankier sounds the JB jr gets when clean. Its a tad more percusive. Great clean tone. The distortion sounds remind me of the sortve distortion tones you get with a Tele bridge pickup but more beefed up which i personally really like.
hey man great video i finally brought my second mustang which is a fiesta red mustang and i am modding it to the roseland ballroom setup. my question is when you got the red pickguard did the jb jr fit perfectly without any modification done to the pickguard or did you have to shape the pickguard a little to make it fit.
I'm building a baritone tele and I've been considering the JB Jr. I now think I'll go for it.
It's a great pickup!
One of my favourite guitars
Mine too Brian!
The man himself used jb jr? Okay I'm sold lol
The prototype of prototype Oranj-Stang 😲
For clean stuff, I prefer the JB Jr, on distortion I definitely prefer the full sized JB.
Also, it's weird hearing In Utero stuff in standard tuning, I had a heart attack when I realized radio friendly unit shifter was in Standard lol.
Sounds damn good
Thank you!
Just got my squire bullet Mustang to use as a tribute guitar, what should I put in it to recreate kurt’s skystang?
Hey Eric I love your channel and own a kc fender jaguar myself. I heard you like the JB and super distortion but I was wondering if you had to pick one which one would it be? Currently can’t decide which one I like, they’re both really good. I also play alternative/punk and shoegaze type styles
I prefer the sound of the full size JB clean and in certain songs with the SansAmp, but when using the Boss, i prefer the JB Jr, all stemming from the lower and brighter output of the Jr.
It would be cool to see you shoot out the mini dimarzio super distortion vs the lil jb also someday.
I think that some people don’t like the JB jr because they expect it to be sonically identical to the full-size JB. I think if it was made clearer that it retained some Strat single-coil characteristics, people might appreciate it more?
The Everything Axe set is what I eventually went with for my grunge/ alternative/ utility guitar.
I actually liked the the JB Jr more for the distorted tones and the regular JB more for the cleaner tones. I expected it to be the exact opposite.
I wonder if a mod to run the JB in parallel would be similar? A tiny bit lower output, maybe a little more sparkle?
With the DS2 on, they're identical. When clean, the Roseland sounds like a Mustang. The white pickup sounds like the updated/newest Jag-Stang.
Agreed that they sound very similar with the DS-2, which is why I included songs with the Sansamp 🙂 I think you can hear more a difference there!
I really like the Jr. Almost wish I went with those instead of hot rails in my Duo sonic.
So when Nirvana played that Italian show in 93,and they were at the breakdown of "drains you" what happened with his guitar or amp on that show? Thanks
Are you referring to the nulle part ailleurs France TV appearance in 94? Nirvana did not play in Italy in 93. I don't know exactly what happened sorry, something went wrong with his rig that caused his guitar to completely cut out. You can see it start to happen during the song before, in Pennyroyal Tea during the bridge
I have a question what guitar string did you use on both of the jb. And jb jr
But anyways hsb and sts sound amazing!
Thank you! Ernie Ball heavy top skinny bottom, same set of strings during both sound samples.
I was just curious the texas single coil pickup u had on the first version was it a strat pickup?
Full size has more low end. I have to parametric EQ the hot rail low end a lot as well.
I’m having trouble finding a stock mustang single coil neck pickup any tips?
I was surprised at how much I liked the sound of that JBjr. Where did you find the red pickguard for the Jagstang? I’m thinking about modding mine the same way. Looks so good with the red on red!
Thanks for the comparison! Full size JB is a killer pickup, nothing like it. This is the only pickup that I custom installed in my guitar and had immediate ‘This is it’ moment. Can you also compare super distortion to jb and super distortion mini?
Agreed 🤩 full size JB and DiMarzio super distortion are my favorite pickups. I’ll look into the distortion mini!
@@NirvanaGuitars Maybe you could compare Mustang JB, with Jaguar SD and the Jag-Stang Fender pickup? That would be the ultimate comparison! Same strings, same riffs..
it all depends on what sound you are looking for. The jr offers a sharper, brighter sound and the full size humbucker has a fatter sound and tends to go low. Taking into account the pedals with the DS-2, the Jr would work better because this pedal has a more compressed sound and the Jr makes it shine more. For the classic sansamp, the full-size humbucker is better since that pedal, in addition to a powerful distortion, has a lot of harmonics and with the Jr you may lose strength and scream a little with the highs. What I can say from my point of view is that it all depends on the pedal you use or the configuration on the pedal for each pickup. But finally, both sound good and the Jr gives it a single coil aesthetic touch more like the mustang
Love that breakdown, thanks for sharing your analyzation!
@@NirvanaGuitars Thank you. I was listening and writing what I seemed to hear at the time. then I saw that you yourself made a reflection and I said to myself, well nobody asked me but I already answered. Another point of view is always fine, so you have an external opinion from someone who hasn't thought about what to write, from someone who only wrote while listening hahaha
Where can I get a Roseland form pickgaurd like that one?
@NirvanaGuitars Did Kurt use a neck JB JR or is there an error on your Amazon store front?
For me the clean tone of the full size JB was best. But the distortion of the JB Jr was better than the distortion of the full size JB.
JB definitely dominates for cleans. The JB Jr has more high end which does shine on distortion!
Agreed
the rosie layout has a lot more low end focus goin on i feel, i'm about it!
Yes! I feel the same way 🌹
Hey where did you get the 90’s tort from?
For every guitar, do you keep it in the tone that was used in real life (if this makes sense)
i think that the JB Jr has a lower gain than the full size one
I want to recreate the final form for oranj stang on my jagstang but I was just wondering what neck pickup would I need to get
If you want it to be exactly like Kurt’s, then a stock mustang single coil neck pickup!
@@NirvanaGuitars ohh ok that helps alot thankyou! And excellent cover 👍
The JB Jr. wins for me in this case. A lot more clarity both clean and distorted.
What would you recommend out of the Gibson Nashville and the Gotoh Tune-O-Matic, for a Mustang? Heard the Nashville is slightly better?
From my experience so far, both of them offer pretty much the same functionality and I don't have a preference between the two. Aesthetically I like the look of the bigger Nashville style more, but the Gotoh TOM ABR-1 was easier to install.
@@NirvanaGuitars Cool thanks for getting back to me. It's going in one similar to your blue comp stang. In what way was the Gotoh easier to install?
@@questionmark1957 of course 🙂 that’ll be cool! For the Gotoh in my Prototype Jag-Stang, I just had to tape the pole pieces so they would stay in place but I eventually got little custom thimbles to hold them in. Easy stuff I could do myself. But for skystang with the Nashville, I had to bring it to a tech to get the bridge holes filled and redrilled
The top-end on both is identical. If you want the OG JB sound when you have a JB Jr., maybe just try to turn the bass and midrange up on the amp some, and then the opposite for vice versa.
Yeah that'd probably work! To give the Jr more thump
I liked the JB Jr midbass boost better on driven tones, but it sounded weak on cleans. The JB sounded much fuller on cleans.
Need a Super Distortion vs JB video
The Jr is sharper to me which I prefer.
i agree with you
what strings are those
I am trying to find a solution for the sixties cycle hum in my mustang and i initially considered the jb jr, but if you look on the bottom there's pcb board. I initially thought they just overwound the coils to match the impedance of a jb and the reason it sounds like a single coil is because of the close string spacing of the pickup but it's done through digital circuitry. It's would still be worth it, seymour duncan paid an enormous amount of research and development to develop the pick up and it sounds very, very close, but in the end I'm probably going to go with the seymour duncan yjm fury pickups. Despite the clichéd eighties endorsee they are wound half way up regularly wound, and the other half reverse wound. It makes a more true single coil sound without adding hum. It's an idea that could have been done in Leo Fenders time if they'd thought of it. He would have thought that was quite clever. A humbucker will sound like a humbucker and a single coil will sound like a single coil basically.
I don't honestly know if they'll ever truly capture the sound of the fender twin. According to chaos theory there are way to many variables for it to be viable. If you don't know what chaos theory is, read a book or listen to a podcast on the subject. I understand most people might not be familiar with the concept and I don't really feel like typing that out with my thumbs.
I'll try. I know this is totally comparing apples to oranges but it will illustrate my point. It is literally impossible to make a cluster bomb where 100 percent of the bomb let's explode. Their percentage is surprising abysmal actually for such an extremely fine tuned precision engineered each one is and how many people with degree you couldn't imagine worked on. They want more than anything than for those bombs to explode. It's not on purpose obviously. After you introduce a certain number of variables they multiply against each other and it overlaps basically into infiniy which is obviously indecipherable. And that's just a bomb let. Those aren't a terribly hard thing to do if you think about it. A fender twin has so many variables involved in its operation it is insane. There's the tubes, the capacitators, if you knew how a tube amp worked it would blow your mind how many. So it may literally never be done. Right now you can get a used seventies silverface fender twin, which Kurt Cobain actually used by the way, he was mesmerized by the thing, online for about the price you paid for that amp. I'd hurry, they're dissapearing and obviously they won't be making anymore. I can't do it because I live in canada and shipping like that costs a bit much. And learn to play a scale at least. I can play guitar with one hand and I earned it. Believe me. If you knew who I really was you would fall down or something so don't feel dumb. I am not writing this to be mean, I am writing this to avert a possible tragedy.
There is no digital circuitry in Seymour Duncan pickups. A PCB has nothing to do with whether a circuit is digital. Where did you get that information?
I actually prefer the Jb Jr. I've had the chance to play both in a mix with bass and drums and the Jb Jr sits better in the mix. No shade at all on the full sized. This is obviously my personal preference and you can dial in the full sized to do this as well!
I preferred in this context the JB Jr. Bit more articulate
The normal JB has a bit more lower end on some other songs with The sans amp on
I like the sound of the red guitar
XD jokes aside, I personally think regular JB sounds slightly darker when it comes to distortion, yet brighter on clean tones when the Jr. is slightly darker
Like IDK if there can be a pickup that can combine this clean tone with a regular JB distortion
Wait what red guitar? 😉 I think the best way to get what you're describing would be to add more lows on the amp when using the JB Jr
@@NirvanaGuitars I meant it as a joke, like I love both tones but I can't pick one because both are as good lmao
Jr wins! i have both.
What pots?
Kinda tough to tell using a digital distortion pedal into a digital amp modeller. But overall i preferred the full size jb i think.
Where in the video was a digital distortion pedal used?
1:40 I have the same shirt
Should i get the ds1 first or the ds2?
Ds2 sounds like a ds1 on mode one so probably ds2
I'd say DS-2 cause you have more options with it! Mode 1 can get you very close to a DS-1 sound
JB jr to thin on distortion, the hot rail is better but lack in clean the most balanced of this litle single coil HB is the Dimarzio Super Distortion S, but nothing beat the full tone of a humbucker
The Jr. is brighter
why make a distorted tone comparison if basically all guitars sound the same like that?
What? All guitars sound the same on distortion?
well, mostly, apart from single coil to humbuckers normally most guitars with (the same amp and pedals and mic etc etc) high gain settings sound almost identical to eachother, man y youtubers like glenn from spectre sound studios have done this test, you should check it out, i even did the test to see if it was true with my guitars and personally, i did not find a major difference in the recordings.@@NirvanaGuitars
🤔 hard disagree. And I am far from the fitst to upload a pickup compassion with distortion. The 2 in this JB vs JB Jr video do not sound identical, and all 5 guitars in this video sound very different:
ua-cam.com/video/o4oc48Anr2A/v-deo.html
@@NirvanaGuitars maybe it was just my guitars, but this video does seem to have a good point also, also i triedc to shorted my comment by saying they sound the same, i really meant that they sound very simular but inn a whole mix the tone change wont be that big of a difference (most of the time) between humbucker to humbucker, single to single, etc...
but also keep in mind that the sound of the guiatr un-amplified will be completely different to any other guitar, the position of the microphone also changes the tone in the recording, i'll try to really do a bunch of comparisons to really prove everything for myself though, i might've been wrong.
btw just an edit, i do however know that the JB is hotter than many pickups, but output does not really change the tone, apart from a bit of a crunchier sound, sorry for the long comment, really like your videos, i've watched almost every single one.

TL;DR: If you have a Player Jaguar, use the full-size JB. If you have a CV Jaguar (which is fit-routed instead of swimming pool), use the JBJr. Easy!
Can I bring my CV Jaguar to the swimming pool though??
@@NirvanaGuitars Too much risk of trashing that beautiful silver sparkle finish!
@@inthestudy damn it!
jb jr natural sound, not to much muddy
Seymour duncan jb jr sounds more like a single, but full size seymour duncan jb sounds a lot fatter, that's why I like it more
Jb Jr sounds more Nirvana than JB for me
Maybe I’m deaf or something but they sound the exact same way
They do sound similar! I think there is a difference though, especially in the cleans.
I think the jb sound better in clean, but the jb jr is better in distortion 😑
I don’t hear much difference, honestly.
It would have been nice to compare them clean. The distortion makes it all pointless.
Distorted Nirvana riffs on a channel called NirvanaGuitars?? Shocker I know 🤯
You have the limpest wrist on UA-cam!
Is that a good or bad thing?
@@NirvanaGuitars If you’re playing Nirvana, a good thing to my ears. Cobain wasn’t a down-up-down, miss a beat here and there guitarist. He was more like a those drummers who hit on every stroke, stepping in and out of rhythms and signatures at will. Those who play Nirvana tunes with a stiff wrist often sound inorganic/less dynamic to my ears. For example, most playTeen Spirit wrong because they’re stuck in the same rhythm hand pattern for the whole song; you’re not.
Back in the 90’s, the wisdom passed around was that to play like Nirvana you had to get rid of the notion of a strong wrist and a count of hit and missed beats in your head. Basically do the opposite of what most guitar teachers would tell you to do - play loose rather than tight. You’ve got the limp wrist down in all off these demos 👌
I hate the JB
MAGA.
make america grunge again
Lookin like its gonna be the Jr. for the win. Just has it...
