Good simple test for breaking strain. When you add the shock absorbing properties of a rod it’s amazing how 10lb holds up. I regularly catch 500mm + tailor(bluefish) on 10lb 8x braid & have never been busted off. It would be interesting to see how sufix co-polymer holds up, given that it shares a lot of characteristics with braid. I use it as a leader on braid with an fg knot & it’s never failed.
I'm amazed how people land trophy Bass with 6lbs test anything, or any other fish for that matter. Rod and drag also play a big role, put those 3 together and all the magic happens.
I haven't even watched the video yet but my guess is braid is going to break lower and mono and flouro are going to break higher. simply due to braids lack of stretch hence why you can typically go 10 lb higher than the monofilament rating on your rod when using braid.
In Ontario we fish for Steelhead and salmon and we use 10 or 12 lb mono with a float weighted with 6 to 7 BB round split shots from big to small to a micro swivel then Floro carbon leader that can be 6, 4 or 2lb test tie to # 4 hook. The Mono floats but it stretch helps in fighting the fish with 13 foot center pin rods using a center pin reel. If the line breaks it is usually the leader that breaks so you do not lose the swivel or anything above the swivel. I am surprise that the 10 lb suffix did not break during swing.
@@walden6272 yes they are chinooks but a good center pin and a 13 ft float rod will do it. The rod does most of the work and puts pressure on the salmon. 12 lbs or 10lb should be your main line.
@@DaYammie This year I am trying out 12lb mono for chinook. I normally fish with 30lb braid but I wanted to test myself if I can land a chinook on a 12lb mono( my favorite fishing line). Braids are good but I don't like handling them, it can cut my finger if I am not careful. So good to know it's possible to catch them on 12lb mono.
@@walden6272 if I were to use a spinning reel I would use 20lb braid with 5 to 6 feet 12lb Floro carbon leader with 9 to 10 foot rod. Using a center pin on a 13 foot float rod is what in like to use. I would use hi vis 12 Mono to a float to Mirco swivel then clear 8lb mono with BB pellets on it from big to small that balances the float then another swivel then 2 to 4 feet Floro carbon leader. The leader can be 7, 6 to 4 lbs sometimes 2 lbs for steelhead. If you do break off it is usually at the leader. If the salmon runs let him run with some pressure but do not force him. Your best bet is to turn him from area that might break you off. Every river is difference so you got to play around with different depts before you start your day. I just wish I had more places to fish here in Ontario.
These are all bad testing no water and fish don't hit in one direction. Also fish body weight is distributed evenly. During a fight that weight does matter its the actual reeling them in that the weight gets heavy.
Flouro is nothing like braid in stretchiness. Barely less than mono stretch. And you held the mono 'drop test' from way higher than you did the flouro.
@@ETuss713 still floats a good 20 plus feet out from my rod to the bobber so it's not just the bobber. Not only that most the lighter lb mono does float 4-12lb if you let it rest even using lures. I know I fish all the damn time and all my small reels use mono. My bait caster and 3000 up spinning reels use braid and the line definitely sinks on it fast.

Great point!
Ill have to do another test in the future going over some of this.
what...does that mono not say 12 pound test?
in use braid for main line.. then flouronor mono for leader.. so it easily breaks if it snags on underwater debris.m
*i use
That makes sense, thanks for sharing!

Id have to agree with all that! Light line need an Ultra Light rod or it puts a lot of stress on the line.

12lb mono for salmon? Are these chinooks? If so, 12lb seems kinda risky against 20lb chinooks.

@@DaYammie how do u tie mono to leader by swivels
Try a test using the same brand throughout.
Do a test of different types of knots 🪢
What knot were you using?
The Monofilament was 12lb
.014" line is about 12lb. Probably breaks at 14lbs to 16lbs.
I paused it right at 0.42 and yes, the mono is 12lb (labeled on box)
Is dead weight an live weight different when it comes to the type of fishing line
Dead weight × 4 = live weight

That is a bold mustache selection.
Thank you sir!
That drop test thou
Thanks for video
Should’ve gotten them from the same brand too

A bit melodramatic ya guy
You gotta wet the lines
10 lb is not 10 kg
Mono does not float.....
I wish people would stop repeating that.
Actually it does to an extent especially using bobbers with live bait setups it floats all the way to the bobber
No. It slowly sinks. What ypu are saying is a Bobber float, you have mono tied to it, therefore a mono floats.
