I asked Eli Jacobson, VoicePlay's rock tenor, how he developed his rock voice, and this is what he answered me.
Once a month, as a VP patron, I get to send a personal message to one of the VoicePlay members and they send me a personal video in return. I'm not much of a small-talker, so I just ask them a question instead. This month it was Eli's turn to answer.
This is from my private video that I am free to share with who ever I like, so it is NOT Patreon content that I am not allowed to share publicly.

I'm glad he is enjoying exploring his grit! I knew he would be thoughtful about how he protects his voice. Great question, Huldra!

It's so important, and I'm glad he addressed that as much as he did, as a singer that should be your first concern!

This was very interesting. Thank you, Huldra. Eli was a very friendly and attentive man when I talked to him in New Jersey. He was so intelligent, very polite, very down to earth and very caring. I truly liked his personality.

Eli definitely has the perfect rock voice. Eli is bad ass. Would love to hear a full version of him doing "Oh Sherrie" from Steve Perry. Or some Foreigner.

Thank you dear Huldra. I love Eli’s singing voices (all kind) and his speaking voices but his natural voice is one of a kind. So calm and smooth. He seems to be such a polite nice humble man 🤗

Not to sound too fan girly but his speaking voice is just as lovely as his singing voices. 😊 Thank you for sharing this with us.

I always thought that everyone sang "naturally". I knew you could make your voice stronger so you could sing louder or longer, but I had no idea that you could train your voice to do things that it didn't do straight out of the box. I learned from watching one of Geoff's tutorials and listening to reactors with knowledge of the science of singing that I realized you could change and improve your voice.
    Thanx for sharing, Huldra!!

I know it's not for everyone, but 'harsh vocals', be it death metal, metalcore, or anything else, is anything but natural. All those singers needed to figure out how to do that without hurting themselves. There are quite a few singers that admittedly 'blew their voice out' and had to start over from scratch learning the right way to do things.

I love this, awesome to see how singers do what they do. ❤️ Eli, like some others, just figure stuff out.
I think the best piece of help I’ve got and give others is: when it starts hurting you’re done for the day. 😂

I'm really so glad he approached this FIRST with "how can I protect my voice?" I have a friend who was the lead singer of a Swedish screamo band, and by 28 she had pretty much destroyed her voice until she had to retire from singing. I'd never want anyone to permanently damage their body for the sake of art, especially such a gorgeous voice like Eli.

When you want to sing for a living, that should be everyone's first concern. I'm glad he talked so much about that part, it's important for people to hear who might want to learn

When they first started individual messages, I thought I knew who’s months I’d look forward to. But with his first message, Eli became my favorite. He is so kind and thoughtful, and probably takes way more time recording these than they meant to.

Awesome, Eli. On the off chance you see this, we've all loved watching you progress, and your range expand. We've loved every minute of it! And it's wonderful to see your family grow at the same time! Hugs to all of you! Oh, and thank you for "Creep." You and the boys nailed that one, it's just everything, and it's in my top ten Voiceplay songs. But I do wonder, why we didn't see you during the end when the camera was panning person to person?
Side note: It's driving me a little nuts that I can't look at Eli and not see Doctor Venture now, especially when Eli is wearing glasses! I hope it'll pass. I mean, I loved "The Venture Brothers," it was a great obscure cartoon show. Patrick Warburton did a voice in it. It was on Adult Swim, playing the same night as "Robot Chicken," I think. But probably 80% of the people watching this would only get the reference if they Google "Doctor Venture." It's not that I don't SEE Eli, it's just that part of my brain is saying "Fuel up the jet, Brock!"

Thank you Eli, and thank you Huldra. I made a comment on one video that Eli was finally sounding like Eli, and then I hoped that the badly phrased comment was not taken wrong. He is truly an ultimate ensemble singer, he can deliver anything that is needed for the group effort. But that was the first time I felt like we were hearing 'him', if that makes sense. (Am I making sense?)

I have two totally off-the-wall questions. One touches an extreme corner of this video. My family, kids, and I have an interest in genetics, one of which is tongue-rolling. It is a dominant trait that only my dad didn't have.
Eli has SUCH a unique sound. My younger daughter (who can sing) can roll up her tongue a lot, like Eli. (This is best shown in The Wellerman starting at 1:35 to 1:40.) I have wondered does this help to change their tone, or whatever it is, like he talks about here around 1:45 to 2:00?
Also she can roll it backwards, so can Eli roll his backwards?
Now you can do a "WEIRDEST Comments/Questions Ever Posted on my Channel" video starting with this one. 🙃 👍 🤣
