- The wife of a man who won $273 million in the Mega Millions lottery earlier this month is asking him to end her court-ordered spousal support. Eileen Murray was the primary breadwinner during her marriage to Mike Weirsky of Alpha, New Jersey. They just divorced months ago, and Murray was ordered to pay spousal support for five years, but she's hoping his massive windfall will change things. "To him, [the alimony] is pocket change at this point," Murray told Inside Edition. #InsideEdition

Legally it wouldn't. The ex-husband could file to halt payments due to changing circumstances, but unless he does so, alimony wouldn't cease.
Personally, I think it should cease regardless of gender, and I think alimony in general is an antiquated practice that shouldn't have a place within a modern society. (It also typically benefits women way more than men).
Some men might simply see this as an example of "be careful what you wish for" when it comes to the equality debate of genders. This woman is a victim of an unfair practice that many men before her have been arguing about for decades.

It was frequently a wet dream for mine to secretly win a lottery windfall while working a crappy job where I would be fired, and then, for just pure USDA Spite, collect Unemployment Benefits from them.
A co-worker of mine once told me that if he were to win BIG!! in a lottery, he would purchase the home next door to me, completely tear it down, and build a McMansion just to spite me.

If I was him I would do nothing and let the court handle it. He is not obligated to do anything for her at all as the divorce is finalized.

I don't think gender has anything to do with it. If it was the other way around I still don't think it's right for someone to continue to accept payments when they clearly don't need it anymore. It might be legally binding but a person can always ask for it to end.

I just realized that this was three years ago. Does anyone know if this the lottery winner did right by his ex wife? If he was a halfway decent person, he would have halted the alimony payments and given her at least a few million. Even if their divorce was a bitter one, it is the right thing to do.
All she wants is termination of spousal support because an attorney has already told her she is not entitled to any of his winnings.
