I like to describe McMurdo Station as a bankrupt summer camp in the worst place on earth. I do miss it though. These days I'm working in Bagram, Afghanistan, which is a lot like a post-apocalyptic prison for overpaid contractors.
@@FallofftheMap I was there in 2000-2001, and I explain it to people by saying it’s like either a mining camp with a ton of college students running around, or a small college waaay out in the toolies with an anomalously large amount of heavy machinery. I was a fuelie, and got to spend a month or so out a Marble Point. That was a nice change.

Man props to you for staying online and replying to comments for three years. Antarctica seems like such a dope continent, but man it would probably be HELL to stay there more than a couple months. Could I ask what your profession is and some of the steps you took to start this journey around the world?
Thanks. I enjoy replying to comments... well, most comments. I’m an electrician. My overseas journey started out of necessity during the Great Recession. Drowning in debt and with slim prospects for work, I took a job in Afghanistan. I had planned on it just being a year to get back on my feet, but I got addicted to this life of travel and adventure. Once you’ve worked one overseas job it’s easier to get others especially as you build a network of friends and colleagues.
I would really like to say someday that I have visited an Irish pub on every continent. I know McMurdo has Gallagher's pub. Bucket list is to have a pint there during the Icestock music festival.
You’ve done your research! I recommend applying for a job there if you’re a US citizen or at the nearby Scott Base if by chance you’re a Kiwi. If you’re neither then it will be tough to accomplish your goal because you’d need to time your arrival on an Antarctica cruise with the festival.
And who is gonna pay 100 million + to film a low budget movie in Antarctica , The first movie only cost 10 million because they filmed it somewhere realistic , Alaska
Strangely I wanted to view the south pole about a year ago through google maps and also just a few weeks back as well, it brought me a peace as if I need to be there Hmmm. I only seen the out side of the compound and some of McMurdo. Thankyou for opening it even more I enjoyed the inner surroundings of the complex. I hope in the future people will share a little more of the life style of McMurdo Station. Thankyou for sharing it on UA-cam.
I do try to respond to most comments. Yeah, the flat earthers are a trip. I think somewhere along the line a flat earther posted my video in one of their groups and so they all flocked here to argue and invent conspiracies.
It’s all relative. There was one day I was working outside in -73f (with the wind chill). I would get about 3 minutes work, then I’d need to run inside when my eyelids started freezing to my eyes.
I always wondered why mcmurdo doesn’t count as a village the way the Chilean base does. I hope one day they will develop a sustainable city in Antarctica for the scientists, something like a snow globe, but maybe it really is that cold that certain things just won’t work.
They’re working on rebuilding McMurdo to be much more efficient and self contained. The new design is pretty futuristic, but the cost of the project means it won’t be completed anytime soon. Won’t quite be what you’re describing, but it’s a big step closer.
very cool video, I live in Ontario Canada and it looked like you were in a party garage here lol I use to love the snow and the cold but now that I am older I would rather watch videos like this from the warmth of my living room. I was with Antarctic support associates in the 90s and went to the dry valleys for a week winterizing a " beaker hut " or quansit hut for scientific research. Last day there a couple of us hiked over parts of the dry valleys, a huge no no but it was the most incredible scenery I have ever seen.
US bases (yes, I know McMurdo is not technically a military base) tend to have commercial establishments such as McDonald's, Burger King, and other things. It depends on the size of the base. I know that the largest US bases in Afghanistan have McDonald's.
McMurdo is hardiness zone 3a, same as much of northern Minnesota, the winter temperatures are in fact the same, but McMurdo has very little precipitation and just a handful of days each summer that barely crest above freezing, and northern Minnesota has summers that are warm and wet and winters that are a bit shorter. This is why one has dense and lush forest with big tall trees, thick soil, and arable land while the other is polar desert where only lichens, terrestrial algae, and several mosses can survive in sheltered spots.
There's an occasional assault. There was sort of a murder mystery at the South Pole Station. No one knows for sure if it was a murder. There are lots of accidents and injuries just due to the dangerous nature of the work and the environment. The year that I was there a profesor died while mapping crevasses in the ice when he found one with his snowmobile.
Not sure if your storm chasing ties into your profession, but if you are a meteorologist, they have a few jobs down there that you could apply for. I think you’d be eligible to work at the Australian, Kiwi, and U.K. stations.
@@eyesonjason It's an amazing place. I'm excited because this summer I'm going to the other end of the world to work at a place called Summit Station in Greenland. I love being on the ice, standing on 1 or 2 km thick ice flows. It's a surreal feeling.
I watch alot of your videos. Today I was learning global studies with my kid and it lead us to McMurdo Station. I then showed him your video, he is impressed as we were also from Quito. Small world. :)
Thank you for making this video! Appreciate the trouble it took. I supposed it's not surprising people willing to work in the Antarctic aren't extroverts lol
Yeah, there’s quite a few people down there that want nothing more than to be left alone. Others are very outgoing. It’s a very small community there, so respecting the people that didn’t want to be on video was important, even if a couple of them were a bit aggressive about it.
I honestly never imagined it look so modern, in my head I pictured modular already built units where you worked and lived. That were shipped in. I know I sound like a complete idiot.
I kinda felt the opposite. I expected it to be much more modern. It kinda felt like a run down summer camp to me. And no, you don’t sound like an idiot at all.
Spent 7 years stationed in Korea. With the exception of earths rotation and low temps, very much a similar situation minus the 50M population and internet speed. Would love to try it for a year.
Yeah, winter was really rough, and unfortunately most of the big construction projects are done in the winter because they don’t want to disrupt the scientists during their busy summer season. I found myself working outside on a day that hit -73f with the windchill.
You know, I was there for one summer and one winter. Although it is pitch black 24/7, -70F, 50knot - 120 knot winds, very secluded 120 people total opposed to 600-800 during summer (which I prefer having the elite few with me because you quickly know who everyone are and those people aren't "first timers" for the most part), But, after all that you do have the southern lights (Aurora's), 1 plane that comes the entire time of winter, and better food since they don't have to cook for as many (but since we don't have any mail or any shipments of fresh food the entire time except one plane after 4 months after winter starts), and finally the parties are cool like mid Winter dinner.
A plausible explanation why some people at McMurdo had "attitude" with being on camera: Their work could be classified. Years ago I was enrolled in a college computer class, where one of the other students was a middle-aged woman, whom the instructor was previously acquainted with, and the subject came up about her working for the National Science Foundation at McMurdo. I was seated next to that woman, and in all following conversations I had with her throughout the quarter, she was vague about McMurdo, as her work there was classified.
My sister (Jules U.) spent 37 consecutive years at McMurdo and South Pole Station as a heavy equipment operator. This video really shows me what life was like in the most current years. Much better than the70's.
You are very lucky you get to go to the field camps! I just applied for next season. Hope to make it down to one of the stations! A real shame you couldn't film more, but I completely understand being in a small community. Upset everyone and you'll be miserable.
I look often from internet, what kind is weather here, in my home land in Finland. There is information, what are the coldest and hearty places in the world in this moment. Thanks for this. I’m very surprised people would be mad at you filming them. I woulda figured for one they’d be all for it since it shows people what they do and two because I assumed you would all be super close since there’s barely any of you there lol
Sadly, no. Lots of introverts there, and the place is very cliquish. Not everyone is friendly, and because I’m a bit of an introvert myself (when not on camera) I wasn’t part of any of the cliques.
Great video. I’ve always wanted to go to Antarctica. One day I will. Probably hundreds of coments about The Thing here, which is one of the reasons going there. The wildlife, the ice, the science stations…. The setting of the movie ofc
Thanks. I’m doing great. It’s what, 8 years since I uploaded this video in Antarctica? I’m on my little farm in Ecuador editing a moto vlog video riding around the Ruta Escondida… so yes, I’m doing well, and with each adventure I climb a little higher and can stop and look at the world around me… at all the people that haven’t yet learned to climb up out of their problems yet.
Then do it. If you’re a US citizens the easiest and best way to go is to apply for a job there. It’s easier than most people realize. PAE is the largest employer at McMurdo Station. Just search for Antarctica with the location field blank at indeed . Com.
It's really not once you leave the "town" part - he was near building 155 which is the main hub - basically besides the dorm, VFM (vehicle Maintenance facility), FEMC (building construction/maintenance), it is desolate and gorgeous
I have heard so many times that there lives no one, I can't believe this is Antarctica. I do not expect so many people there simultaneously and it is unbelievable he is roaming outside just like that.
RAHUL TAWARE no one lives there permanently. The maximum you can stay at the US operated stations is 14 months before they make you leave for health and psychological reasons. McMurdo Station had about 150 people in the winter I was there and almost 1000 people in the summer. Most are just support staff for the scientists and maintenance workers like myself. I suggest you research McMurdo Station. There is even a live camera feed from the station, though it’s winter there (dark 24 hours a day) so the camera won’t show much until around late September when the sun come back.
Charles Lord, I believe it is. In the summer months (November through February) the population swells to between 800 and 1000 at McMurdo. During the long dark winter it’s between 120 and 150. By comparison, during the winter the entire continent of Antarctica, including McMurdo, the population is usually around 500. I don’t know how many stations are manned in the winter months, but the US has 3, and I know NZ, UK, Russia, and Japan all maintain personnel over winter
Chile has 4 permanent stations and 5 summer stations. I have been in the Chilean station in King George Island, the total population over summer is about 250 and around 80 during winter. Something interesting about Las Estrellas Village is they have an elementary school working over the entire year to keep the military personnel close to their families during their service.

My God man, Antarctica is brutal enough. How can you live in that station. It looks like a Soviet era project top-to-bottom. Design, materials and ambiance. Give yourselves a break. 10 Gallons of Sherwin-Williams and a silk plant or two would be a start. Good luck.
I like to describe McMurdo Station as a bankrupt summer camp in the worst place on earth. I do miss it though. These days I'm working in Bagram, Afghanistan, which is a lot like a post-apocalyptic prison for overpaid contractors.

@@FallofftheMap I loved Bagram when I was there

@@FallofftheMap I was there in 2000-2001, and I explain it to people by saying it’s like either a mining camp with a ton of college students running around, or a small college waaay out in the toolies with an anomalously large amount of heavy machinery. I was a fuelie, and got to spend a month or so out a Marble Point. That was a nice change.

Checking the weather report at McMurdo Station:
Cold today.

the real question is how did you manage to upload this in Antarctica?
It took a few days. We do have internet at McMurdo. It’s painfully slow, but it’s possible to upload.
At 1080p quality. 😂
Fall off the Map what is the average speed?
I have no idea what the technical answer is, but slow as molasses about sums it up.

All seriousness aside this would make awesome location shoot for a remake of The Thing.
Good luck with the logistics
That movie was so perfect, No remake will ever be needed, Besides it all would be cgi and fake looking as fuck, I hate movies now, friggen computers,
And who is gonna pay 100 million + to film a low budget movie in Antarctica , The first movie only cost 10 million because they filmed it somewhere realistic , Alaska

I only seen the out side of the compound and some of McMurdo. Thankyou for opening it even more I enjoyed the inner surroundings of the complex. I hope in the future people will share a little more of the life style of McMurdo Station. Thankyou for sharing it on UA-cam.
This guys a legend for replying to comments, btw I found lots of flat earthers here.
I do try to respond to most comments. Yeah, the flat earthers are a trip. I think somewhere along the line a flat earther posted my video in one of their groups and so they all flocked here to argue and invent conspiracies.
Temperature= -30°C
Him: It's a warm day
It’s all relative.
@@FallofftheMap I hope it would finish soon! Goodluck with everyone in there tho!

US bases (yes, I know McMurdo is not technically a military base) tend to have commercial establishments such as McDonald's, Burger King, and other things. It depends on the size of the base. I know that the largest US bases in Afghanistan have McDonald's.
There's 2 of them in Antarctica actually. Good spot!

It’s -22 degrees right now in Minnesota which is about -50 degrees with wind chill. This is fascinating, thanks for making it.

ChrisOnAWave it’s cold af in Milwaukee my nigga!!
Thanks for sharing! Maybe not “exciting”, but still cool to see how y’all live down there.

There's an occasional assault. There was sort of a murder mystery at the South Pole Station. No one knows for sure if it was a murder.

Summer looks OK-winters must be dreadful
Yeah, winter was really rough, and unfortunately most of the big construction projects are done in the winter because they don’t want to disrupt the scientists during their busy summer season. I found myself working outside on a day that hit -73f with the windchill.
You know, I was there for one summer and one winter. Although it is pitch black 24/7, -70F, 50knot - 120 knot winds, very secluded 120 people total opposed to 600-800 during summer (which I prefer having the elite few with me because you quickly know who everyone are and those people aren't "first timers" for the most part),
But, after all that you do have the southern lights (Aurora's), 1 plane that comes the entire time of winter, and better food since they don't have to cook for as many (but since we don't have any mail or any shipments of fresh food the entire time except one plane after 4 months after winter starts), and finally the parties are cool like mid Winter dinner.
Your video is so wholesome. I have a dream to visit Antarctica one day. Thank you for posting🙏🏽
"the McMurdo way is to complain about it" I'm dead
A plausible explanation why some people at McMurdo had "attitude" with being on camera: Their work could be classified. Years ago I was enrolled in a college computer class, where one of the other students was a middle-aged woman, whom the instructor was previously acquainted with, and the subject came up about her working for the National Science Foundation at McMurdo. I was seated next to that woman, and in all following conversations I had with her throughout the quarter, she was vague about McMurdo, as her work there was classified.
They could also be just socially inept nerds, or both lol.
My sister (Jules U.) spent 37 consecutive years at McMurdo and South Pole Station as a heavy equipment operator. This video really shows me what life was like in the most current years. Much better than the70's.
Does she play country music? I think I know her.

Mc Murdo Station must be the biggest settlements in Antartica ! Bigger than Chile's village "Las Estrellas"
It is the biggest in the summer but winter might be somewhat contested.
