Making an Outdoor Chair out of a 2x6

- I made a DIY outdoor lounge chair out of a 2x6 using just 3 basic power tools. This is a really fast and easy DIY furniture project. I used a western red cedar 2x6 because it holds up against elements but a cheaper softwood could be used it just wouldn’t last as long. A circular saw, drill, and orbital sander are the only essential power tools for this project but I used my Kreg 720 pocket hole jig so that I could hide the screws. I think. of this design as a modern take on a modern take on a Adirondack chair. I cut 2x6 boards to 36" for the seat, 30" for the back, and 18" for the legs before drawing a diagonal line 1.5" in to cut triangular pieces. I made this design up on the spot and these lengths can be adjusted 4-10" in either direction. I stained the cedar with CABOT Solid Color Acrylic Stain and Sealer in Pewter Gray and used a Purdy roller and brush to apply it.
This video is sponsored by Kreg and Ryobi! IU love these sponsors because I firmly believe they have the best tools and prices for DIYers:

I like how the angular design does not leave a lot of off-cuts resulting in wastage. Love the design.
Lol the perfect combo of sponsor serving and an easy diy project. Great job!
Thank you for making something without a table saw!
"Just going for it"
Best way to work 🙌
Turned out awesome!
A simple but awesome design, Ben!
looks very good and comfortable
great design and build, now I have to find a way to fold it.Thank you.
Brilliant!
Well done.
Great chair sir.
Perfect for the fire pit, needs beer holder on side and brace for the backrest imo, awesome design off the cuff
Bing Bang Boom... Ben strikes again!!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Looks great !! Easy peasy project
Great work!
That’s nice man thanks for sharing
I'll be trying that out of some left over 2x6 from my deck ... I'm thinking I should plan about twice as much time as you though. Looks good!
It looks solid and comfortable🏋♂️👍
Talented and handsome. What a cool combo. :-)
You can bolt the back on to the base, instead of screws, then break it down for more compact storage.
The Backrest here looks rather flimsy. With that long lever arm, there is a lot of torque on those 4 screws attaching it to the base, even when you are gingerly leaning back. Screws do not do well against Twist force along their axis.
My solution would be, as "Without further Ado" suggested a Pivoting bolt at the bottom, plus two wires that hook between 4 eye bolts. 1 pair of eyebolts on the top of the back rest, the other paire on the sides of the seat front. As you lean back, the wires hold tension, transferring them to a "hang force" on the bolts. Bolts with their wider diameter handle hang force pretty well.
Unhook the wires to fold compact.
Not worrying about folding, I would get the angle set and then drill through and peg them with oak dowels.
super cool! Also love the color choice, a very modern look. Thanks for sharing this methode, I also prefer guidelines to rules
Another beautiful design from you...though I feared the back rest would need some reinforcements and as soon as you sat on it and relaxed your back I noticed a flexing that started at the joint of the back rest...can't we have some support that will also be aesthetically pleasing to the eye?
Great video. Love the clean and simple design. Mahalo for sharing! 🙂🐒
I would definitely put a triangle support at the back
looks good 🙌
I need to make this for my upcoming fire pit lounge area
Just need some cushions to sit on! & Maybe some back support?
i'm thinking i'll make the seat back slide in from the top. so i can take it apart and put in the truck for beach, etc. cool design and execution for sure.
Молодец! Красиво получилось! 👍
This is awesome design and you're so precise with the circular saw!
One question I had: Does the back need a bit more support? My kids tend to jump on things and that back rest feels like it could snap out after some where and tear. If so, what sort of extra support would you add?
Thanks again for this amazing video. Will be making similar ones come spring.
Good
Thanks! I was going to build some Adirondack chairs but I like this style better. Just need to figure out a cupholder. I'll also build a tray to catch my friend's change when they sit down 🙂
BTW...I miss these simple projects.
Ah, yes. This is why I subscribe.
looks good, but not structurally sound. Especially the beck rest with 2 screws.
amazing video, ia there a way you could make the same chair with adjustable seat? thanks in advance.
What’s the cost you put into it?
Any way you can make/design an in pool ledge lounger? Concrete or some other material?
Do you have a cut sheet?
I’m curious about how easy using dowels is compared to pocket screws. Not even with a dowel jig. Just drill holes from the front of the first piece into the second piece. Even if the hole ends up crooked it doesn’t matter. Once you put in your dowel and cut it flush it will look like normal. And it has to align correctly between the two pieces because it is one hole. I think seeing the dowels is much nicer than seeing the pocket holes.
Cool design! Is the back strong enough?
How much could you get as in money 💰 for a pair …..I like the build
Cool but where do you find 2x6 that is this smooth. Where i Come from they all look like propellers for an aircraft. Norway btw, 🙋♂️
How many 2 x 6's is required to build the chair?
Do you have a version with ARMS? a true 2x6 Adirondack chair
I would be afraid that the back isn't strong enough with just 2 screws in each side to hold it
Yeah I ended up putting in 4 on each side! good call out!
@@HomeMadeModern i would add some support, maybe triangles in the corners
One bolt on each side of the backrest so that the backrest can swivel and a prop rod on the back to determine the amount of recline desired, possibly multiple adjustments. Then the back can fold down for storage as well.
You would be surprised what is just being held with just 2 nails or screws
So as they say all things are bigger in Texas including the people - so I see that back breaking off without the arms :)
how much length of 2x6 did you end up using eventually?
👍👍👍👍
Is there a way to add handles?
Expansion and contraction has entered the conversation with the pocket holes.
What are floor beds called?
I looks uncomfortable with the lower back not supported
Ben you make it look so easy! Just out of curiosity if I used half lap joinery do you think it would effect the design you have here? Thanks!!
Scam
😃👍🏻👊🏻
Nice simple project Ben. Out of interest, what Kreg screws do you use? I've noticed the standard Kreg screws I have are zinc coated but are only rated for indoors use so I wonder if they could withstand the elements, particularly here in the UK where it rains a lot.
Kreg makes outdoor rated screws. Blue in color
@@63xoph thanks Christoph
Has somebody built it and can comment if it's comfortable?
That back prolly wont last long if anyone sits kinda hard
that 2x6 must have been about 12m long
Wow 1.5M subs, but only 19 comments. I wonder why that is?
Nothing to do with the fact that you watched the video and commented only a few hours after it was posted, no?
@@connorfoster7516 Okay, but it's 5 days now and only 26k views and 44 comments. That's only 1.7% of your subs that have watch this video.
I stopped as soon as I saw the title that says "out of AAAAAA 2x6" then your first words were "from 2x6's".
Okay!
красиво! Но спинка выглядит очень не надежно.
Can i have that? :-)
Can a 300 lbs guy sit on that?
After a strong diet, yes
I wouldn't sit on that.....And I'm only a medium built guy. It's got no arm rests, and the back just looks super dangerous. For sure this IS an Accident waiting to happen.
They need armrests
Hmmm,if you only have these basic tools, you must not diy very much. Then it’s unlikely you will be able to cut straight thru these long 2x6 without a guide
So what you are saying is that you have never been able to color in the lines.
@@gogadgo why don't you try cutting a long straight line like he did and let me know how it comes out
@@b3arwithm3 Not really that hard. It's called practice.
@@robertpalmer3166 did you read before replying? What do u not understand?
To heavy.
It's cedar. Cedar is not that heavy.
Grey? Yuck!
Good for skinny people
A chair noone wants to sit in because its hard as a rock. This uploader is soo bored he has to steal other peoples ideas too make a lil change lol.
Nice, but there are different questions I have. At first, why aren't you using nice joineries and second, why do you paint fine wood with ugly paint? I mean come on, you are using wood, seal it and enjoy the optic. And good craftsman would use a nice joinery, not screw. Sorry!
Nice design. Horrible joinery.
It's amateur diy lol. It's perfectly fine
