  • Writers Institute Director Paul Grondahl interviews noted author, teacher, memoir editor and writing coach Marion Roach Smith. They discuss her experiences working with memoir students, recollections of her years at the The New York Times and the culture of its newsroom, and how she balances the workday demands of teaching students across the globe while carving out time for her own writing.
Marion has coached hundreds of very successful writers. She is the author of The Memoir Project: A Thoroughly Non-Standardized Text for Writing and Life (Grand Central Publishing) and her other books include The Roots of Desire: The Myth, Meaning and Sexual Power of Red Hair, (Bloomsbury, 2005) and Another Name for Madness, (Houghton Mifflin, 1985). She has written for The New York Times Magazine, Prevention, Vogue, Good Housekeeping, The Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere.
In March, 2021, Marion donated proceeds from a “Memoirama” webinar to the NYS Writers Institute. We're grateful for her support!

I have written a memoir and feel like your classes would really take it up several levels. How do I get a hold of you?
