It's the Butterfly effect. In theory, even the simplest interference can cause world lines to split. From one that we didn't buy a lottery ticket to one that we did, for example. The facts of one world line change ever so slightly and from there the process just feeds on itself . it's like shooting pool. one ball hits two, those hit two more apiece and so on.
time travel is long being associated with this kind of risk
