  • 2004 HARLEY DAVIDSON ULTRA CLASSIC ELECTRA GLIDE- How to repair - Stator Wire Grommet Leaking Oil
    I noticed an oil leak when I was getting the ultra classic out of storage and ready for the riding season. Upon further inspection I discover the grommet for the stator wire was allowing oil to seep out. Here is my fix for this and so far it has held up for a year

    THANK YOU! I finally decided to find where the oil was coming from, but I wasn’t sure where to start. I found your video and it lead me right to the problem. I cleaned it all and applied the gasket sealer. A day later, no leaks. Thanks for putting this out there.

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  3 роки тому +1

      It makes it swell. When I did this it lasted for two years until the stator burnt out at 60k. The deal is if it’s leaking then you either replace it or do a temporary repair which might get you another two years or more. A lot easier and cheaper than replacing a stator and opening the primary case.

    How long should I leave it sitting. I read on the gasket maker I used, 24 hours, I placed the stator back on with a few spots lightly to help seal the gasket. It's not terrible, but I need it to seal better cuz it leaks right at the bottom. I don't want to take it off again cuz I'm
    Afraid of damaging the gasket entirely

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  Рік тому +1

      Not sure. I have a rubber grommet. The carb cleaner makes the rubber expand and cleans area. Then I applied the black rtv and let it dry for a day or two. If that don’t work then it maybe at the point of needing to be replaced.

    • @1Turnatatime
      @1Turnatatime Рік тому

      @@TechnMoto ah yeah maybe I should've been patient, I really been itchin to ride after I had to replace the sensor for the crank shaft. The bike would not start whatsoever until I replaced it. But I had to remove the ignition cover to get to it, but I guess this weekend I'll pull it off once more and let it sit over the weekend to see if it'll set properly. I may have waited 30 minutes after reapplying the gasket with the high temp max torque permatex gasket maker. Seems good but maybe I need the specific oil resistant type

  • @scottkoblitz1230
    @scottkoblitz1230 2 роки тому

    Thanks for the video. I’ve heard rtv but never heard of using carb cleaner. I would of thought that would dry the rubber out and make it more brittle over time. I just noticed an oily/dirty mess around my stator grommet on my 2000 ultra classic. Haven’t noticed any leaks on the ground. Guess I’ll give this a shot to hopefully get me through the rest of this season at least. My question is should there even be oil in there by the stator? Or is this an indication or a primary leak or something?

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  2 роки тому +1

      The carb cleaner will swell the rubber which helps to seal that area. The oil is from the primary. When the bike is running it splashes the oil in every direction which is why it leaks pass the grommet when it is worn. Any how try what I did. I think it will work well for you. Take care and ride safe 👍

      did you clean the area well? I used carburetor cleaner, almost the entire can. get it into the rubber inside the housing because that will make it swell. Then apply the RTV. Has to be cleaned really good. can't have any oil. good luck. go to the description ( have links) and use the stuff I used.
