When I heard the two of them talking, with the hissing interference of the ancient recording device (by our current standards), I braced myself for Price’s singing, thinking that it would also be awful and hard to hear! Then, she started the “Vocalise,” and I nearly cried from the beauty of her voice and musicality, which seemed untouched by the old recording....can you imagine what she was like, live, at that moment?!? I would have been reduced to a puddle of tears!

Thank you so much for sharing this incredible treasure! Gorgeous singing by the glorious Leontyne Price, and she is always fascinating in interviews! I wish RCA had recorded an album of Rachmaninov with Mme. Price, such a tragedy that there are only a few live bootlegs. Well, at least we have those, and now this upload of yours! Thanks again and best regards!

The Vocalize is inspiring. Leontyne Price is THE mistress of long legato line and breath control.

Wonderful. The recording quality is so-so. Do you have the date of this broadcast, and the radio station?

Thanks for your comment; I know, it's rather murky, but I couldn't get it any better (I'm not an audio engineer). The original cheap cassette tape was fading away.. It was on either WQXR or WNYC, I don't think I wrote an exact date on it, which is why I put "c.1982" here. If I can find the tape again, I'll check!

@@liedersanger1 I wondered the same thing and didn't want to assume it was B. Short playing the other pieces; he probably could have but it was not really his genre!
(BTW, I'll have more ancient interviews other singers posted as I get to converting them!)

I wrote "1980?" on the cassette so it was earlier than I had thought.

@@liedersanger1 Undoubtedly it IS Mr. Garvey is at the piano for the Rachmaninoff, Barber and Bonds. As distinctive as Miss Price voice is Mr. Garvey's quality of tone, sense of rhythm/phrasing and elegance of style. They function as one, even in corrective moments. Shear beauty.
