And st that time we took such magnificent singing nearly for granted. On any given evening at the Met, it was possible to hear singers such as these now legendary stars. Little did we know then, that it was the end of a Golden Age that would never come again...

You absolutely hit the nail on the head. The current “quality” of singers in the stage worldwide is disheartening and sad. My misery is that I wasn’t old enough to have experienced any of these stars during their prime.

@@LaDivinaLover I saw Pavarotti several times in his prime. Absolutely stunning. Not a huge voice, but brilliantly focused and clear as a bell. And yes, very occasionally he cracked - but that was because he was singing with freedom and using a classic bel canto technique.

  • @GarthAstrology

What I enjoy most about this performance, besides the meeting of two vocal giants, is the intense concentration of attention and listening given Price and Pavarotti by the illustrious peformers behind them. No one loses interest for a moment of the performance, and quite a few of them get caught up in the thrill of the moment. Of course, quite a few of them are listening hard to pass judgement on Price. For contrast, watch them during the "Madama Butterfly" duet excerpt with Leona Mitchell and Giuliano Cianella. Despite the genuine appreciation shown at the end, there are many signs of fidgeting and loss of interest throughout.

One of the wonderful things about her technique is how relaxed her jaw is, absolutely free to move, infinite space at the back. She is fabulous.

Price is talented and excellent technique. The diction in Italian is perfect, the difficult notes come out effortlessly and her warm and sensual voice is among the best ever. A reference for Verdi and Puccini.

Un cantante d’opera deve cercare di avere una dizione italiana quasi perfetta, cosa che la Price non aveva!

Price did not have a perfect technique. Her voice sounds like she has cotton in her mouth. You want real perfect technique. Listen to Callas, Sutherland, Nilsson or Caballe

In France, on two or three national channels, there are some opera concerts like this one and entire operas as well more or less on a weekly basis. On the TNT we have the free Mezzo channel (at least, I have it with my box offer), so Rap/hip-hop/standard popular hits music hasn't killed me yet. 😜 On TV I mean. With my CDs and mp3 players, I'm in heaven.

There's less white people now. Colored people don't listen to opera.
