There is no right or wrong way to fish any fly. As with tackle everyone has their way which has usually stemmed from personal success and there are patterns that fish better one way over another.
There are two things to think about with any fly when heading to the water. Firstly, what water type is it and secondly how do I fish that water type.
If the water is fast, you need a material to suite fast water if the water is slow use a material to suite slow water. A standard thought process perhaps however how many of us think about it? If we really want to fish a pool properly you would probably change your line and fly at least three times fishing the neck, main body and tail of a pool.
This Posh Monkey Variation is a fly that can be fished in any way. With this type of fly in fast water I tend to fish it square and let it swing across the current or if you want to slow it down cast further downstream, mend and hold it in the current or where the fish lie. When fishing in slower water where fish may hold in lower water or later in the season, I like to cast almost up stream and strip fast. Roly-poly for extra speed and continual motion and varying single strips changing the movement of the fly as it goes. This is a fish seeking fly that often brings fish on in an aggressive manor and can get explosive takes. In essence you can fish this the same way as a sunray however in early spring, best fished slow.
A fly for all season however with the water warming and the fish potentially slowing down it can be a great fly to swing in any water
