The Canadian branch of Dog 'N Suds was located in Saskatoon; the one in Williams Lake, B.C. seems to be the last one left. There's a Dog 'N Suds sports bar in Wainwright, Alberta, but the logo is different; it doesn't seem to be associated with the chain, but I could be wrong about that.
There was a Dog N Suds in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada also. They also served mushroom burgers. Winter time - convertible top down - Dog N Suds here we come - 17 year old boys like to have fun also !!! A.G.

Our Dog N Suds in Dover, Ohio also served a Texas Twin Burger (that my mom always liked). On a hot summer Saturday evening, Dad would take the mug off the window tray, tell the waitress to wait a minute, chug the mug and tell her, "I'll have another". That was the BEST root beer ever!! They also had a "mini-meal" I think it was called, for kids. My younger sister and I would get it. Hamburger, fries and a milk shake. I remember kneeling on the back seat and using the back window deck of Dad's Chevrolet Impala as a table. Good times.
Yup. I had a Stingray. Before that though, my fondest bike memory: a Speedster. 3 on the tree, bright red, it was beautiful. Unfortunately I only had it a few months when someone broke into our garage and stole the whole family's bikes. Dad had a Continental, mom had a Suburban...can't remember what my sister had, but it was a Schwinn as well. All heisted. You've gained a new subscriber. I really enjoyed the trivia about this brand. I'm a old timer and I can remember there being two Dog N Suds drive-ins being around beginning about the 1960s in my home town of Jacksonville, Florida. I can tell you that I'd love to see one of those small franchise drive-ins near me. Those Coney dogs and frosted glass mugs of root beer sound awful good. There's just something about the Americana of a small drive-in on a summer evening. Sonic has come close, but it's a little too commercial and hectic. P. S. I forgot to mention, I would like to see a video on Minnie Pearl's Chicken. That was some very tasty stuff and was different than Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Every trip to Fox Lake Illinois we would always stop. It’s been a long time, but well into the ‘80’s it was still original style. Awesome channel keep it up!!
Once again you took me back to fond memories. Thank you. I loved Dog-N-Suds. In my town it later became an A&W, but just wasn’t the same. We never had a Frostie’s, but I still drank many of their bottled root beers. 😃
Your videos are giving me phenomenal flash backs!! First Sandy's and now Dog-n-suds. We lived in Champaign-Urbana from mid '69 to late'70. Our house was across from my grade school and just East of Dog-n-suds. Anytime I got a chance I would walk down and snag a root beer (GOOD stuff!). When Sangamon State University opened my dad took a job teaching at that U., and we moved to Spfld. Sadly, I never saw another DNS. Now.....if you know anything about "The Rapped Rooster", a place we ate at when we lived in Santa Fe, NM (pre '69) I will be shocked (I don't think it was a chain). Thanks for the wonderful history and memories.
Kabloona Kelly yes I live in Chatham, south of Springfield now. Springfield had a DNS but it didn’t last but a year or two. I’m originally from Decatur area and we had three over there.
Their root beer was the best, much better than A&W. i can't remember their food, but that frosty mug of root beer was so very creamy and good. I don't know if it would be the same in a bottle.
How exciting to see this video featuring a photo of the Dog n Suds still in operation in nearby Lorain, Ohio! I grew up dining there and my Mom even worked there as a teen. I had no idea they were a chain! Great video!
Kristen Cook:Glad is still on 254,the area has definitely seen better days but am happy it's managed to survive.I live in Sheffield Lake and always look forward to summer and getting a Texas burger & Coney dog with mug of root beer to enjoy.👍
A perfect summer Saturday for a boy in 1968: 9:30 spend an hour at the local cool hobby shop, 11:00 play at couple of rounds of mini-golf at Putt-Putt, at 1:00 head over to Dog and Suds for root beer, burger, and fries. Those were the best of times.
I used to love the upside down paper cones the root beer came in,when they closed in Louisville never drank root beer since,it was my favorite place to go as a kid
Enjoyed Dog & Suds when little. Had 2 near me growing up. Thanks for letting me know there are still some OPEN, will take a trip to enjoy AGAIN . . . Well worth the Drive ! ! ! . . .
When I was growing up at Ft. Know Ky. We would get treated to DNS once a month. Have not had one since 1975. Makes one feel like something good has been lost.
I remember driving past a derelict Dog 'n Suds site in the Missouri Ozarks as a teen in the '70s; always wondered why anyone would've tried to build a drive-in restaurant in such a remote spot...
I loved the Dog n Suds in Speedway Indiana. I used to eat there two or three times a week. My favorite was the Coney dog, fried mushrooms and creme soda!
There used to be a DNS over here in Keene NH. I think it went local sometime in the late 60s or early 70s, and went belly up soon afterwards. Until I saw this video, I had no idea it was originally part of a national chain.
One of the fondest memories I have as a kid. Dad and mom driving us out to the DNS. For an unknown reason ours was actually outside of town separated from most other commercial operations. That old place sat empty and boarded up for years before being torn down just a few years ago.
I worked at the last remaining original Dog-n-Suds in Indianapolis when I was in high school in the 80s. I mixed many vats of root beer & battered thousands of onion rings. I think it finally closed about 1990, the site is a truck lot now, iirc.
Mom took us there in the original location, many times. It is a fond memory. Still have an old mug ! My sister has the other. Texas twin burger was amazing.
First job I ever had. That was 1965. I was 13 and lied about my age. It wasn't a very good ruse since I looked about 11. But they hired me anyway. Starting wage was 50 cents an hour which I was very pleased with. On special occasions I got to wear the Rover outfit and give out root beer suckers. I had a big crush on a carhop named Sharon. She was a bit older and had a great figure. Her hair was bleached blond and she smoked a lot of cigarettes. I never had a chance.
Crystal Lake,Il. 1974.We'd roast a bowl and either go to Arf n Barf or Arthur Treacher's Fish n Chips.Good times when every move we made wasn't on video!
I live about 45 minutes away from the Dog 'n Suds in Richmond, IL. Not a bad drive! It's a small town and their Dog 'n Suds seems to be thriving! Great food! They even have the trademark souvenir root beer mugs! I've been there a few times! Used to have a Dog 'n Suds by the railroad track here in Palatine, IL when I was little back in the late '60's-early '70's!
I know this video is old but when I was a kid my parents and I used to go to a Dog n Suds in Medaryville, IN. The building is still there but empty. Back in the summer I went to the Dog n Suds in Lafayette, IN. The place was packed and the food was great it was like going back in time. Love the videos your doing, just discovered your channel. I know it's not a restaurant but could you do one on Dad's Rootbeer?
We still have two Dog N Suds where i live in northern Illinois. its always a treat to go there. Its one thing from my childhood i will always remember. you just don't see drive in restaurants anymore.
I grew up in Ingleside, Illinois, we have three Dog N Suds in the area, well, had, the one in Grayslake is for sale I hear. I use to go to the Ingleside one a lot, I had friends that worked there in high school, I was even on a little league team they sponsored. It was always one of those unique places in the area, still with its original sign. I make indie films now and I want to shoot a scene there. What got me thinking about Dog N' Suds is that I was at the Richmond, IL location the other day. I was disappointed that I couldn't get a gallon of root beer, but it was great to go, great place for a summer day. They do car shows in Ingleside every weekend.
There was a Dog N Suds in West Plains, Missouri for several years and when I dined there, they had great service as well as good food and drink. I'm not sure if they are still there or not.
I have the fondest of memories eating with our family at the Dog 'n Suds in Benton Harbor, MIchigan back in the late 60's and early 70's! Best root beer I have ever had. I also went to college in Decatur.
Our family stopped at a Dog 'n Suds somewhere in Central Indiana (south of Indianapolis, I believe) a couple of times in the late 1960s on trips to visit friends. It was the only D 'n S I remember seeing. I was curious about the odd name, so my mom explained it meant hot dogs and root beer. Honestly, I was a hamburger and cola kid, so I was a tough sell.
I can remember going to the DNS in St. Johns, Michigan many years ago. It is a Auto repair shop now that still uses part of the original building. I have drove by a operating DNS in Muskegon, MI just 2 years ago.
I recall D&as from my childhood, in the 60s/70s! I have strong memories of one being in Carthage, Mo, in late 60s, and another, in KC, Mo around 1971-1973. Can anyone confirm this for me?
Great video, I'm from NC and never seen Dog n Suds myself. I admire the independent operators that seem to weather the storms of some of these corporate decisions to keep restaurant chains running that would otherwise be lost to history.
Wow,!!! I had no idea that Dog and Suds was still a ongoing concern. Its been 40 some odd years since I have heard that name. Brings back sone fond memories and smiles. Thanks
There was a Dog n' Suds within walking distance of my house. this unfortunately, was about 30 years ago and I was still a very young child when they went out of business. I now have to go to the Illinois/Wisconsin border for Dog n' Suds.
My Woirold the 2 in MI are owned by my good friend, David Hosticka, and are featured in the video. Hot N Now, those have come up a few times. I’ll have to do some research!
Miss D&S in Charleston IL. Used to eat there alot 25 years ago. The owner retired and they put a auto parts store in its place. Really miss the coneys, ice cold mug root beer and Texas burgers. I believe there are only a few locations left. One is down in Robinson IL.
Loved our dog n suds. The building is still standing and was a high dollar burger-tique until it folded over a year ago. It needs another motivated owner!!! It is located on a western ny lake a quarter mile from a large Boy Scout camp. We used to sneak out for a few dogs and a paper jug of root beer. :) never got officially caught but it didn’t hurt leaving some coneys infront of the leaders tents.
Can anyone share any stories about a Dog n Suds drive-in that was located in Shelbyville, IL in the 1960’s? My grandfather took me there a few times as a very young boy, when I went down for summer visits from Chicago. I was intrigued by the brand, the creamy root beer, onion rings, and coney dogs. I know it closed down eventually… maybe in the 70’s? Thanks!
I don't have much info about it, but I have a friend who knew about it. I am very familiar with Shelbyville, as my parents had a lot at Robin Hood Woods campground. I live in Springfield, IL now, but get over to Shelbyville a few times per year. I will see what info I can find on that location!
My sister worked at the DNS in Grand Haven, MI back in the early '70s! I'm excited to hear about one still being in Muskegon. We both live in other states now, though.
I'm in KY, but sis is in NW Indiana. Maybe next time I visit she can take me there! My uncle was a district manager for Burger Chef, and my first job was at the one in Grand Haven in 1975. I'm loving all your videos. Thanks for your good work.
@@olofpalme63 one further north in Montague/ Whitehall too . They use the original Coney sauce too . Have not been to the Muskegon one but I read reviews that said Montague was more original ..Thanks

OF COURSE I want to hear about the Minnie Pearl Chicken Debacle !!! who wouldn't! Have you heard of the Lone Ranger Resturants?? they came and went quickly they were hamburger joints
had one here in Akron, Ohio just down the street from North high school. On hot days my cousin and I would either ride our bikes to Dairy Queeen or Dog n Suds couldn't beat the root beer at dog n suds or the hot dogs. when it shut down it became a veterinarian office!
Thanks for making this video. Dog N Suds brings back a lot of memories of my hometown, Rockford Illinois. My parents used to take us there a lot on Friday nights and one of my uncles used to take me there to help him pick up girls lol. I guess I was a cute kid or something because it worked a lot of times. Speaking of Rockford ... it's about time to order some Mrs Fischer's potato chips.
You showed a picture of the dog n suds in Paragould Arkansas I grew up in the house across the street in the picture ate at that dog n suds countless times judging by the cars and the house on corner still there I would say I was living there when this picture was taken
Great job on Dog n Suds history. My father worked for DnS as VP of Marketing in the Arlington Hts. office. He worked there in mid 1970s and was there when Frosty purchased them. He was the only executive not initially let go. They moved the corporate hq to Camden, NJ and my dad had no interest in moving so he left the company. Frosty purchase was the downfall as you very accurately described. My dad remained good friends with Don VanDame, until my dad passed away in 2000. In the late 1990's DnS did try and restart and opened a few new restaurants. They ultimately did not make it but the new look was interesting an updated version of the original theme. There's one in Champaign IL that opened. It's a different restaurant now. I'll see if I can find a picture and post. Great job on the history. DnS also did lots of iconic promotions like pulley bully, rover coder and the root beer jugs you showed in your video. I have some of them still. Great job on the video.
There was a DNS near the corner of Waterloo Road and Rainbow Drive in Cedar Falls, Iowa until the mid 80's. It was the old yellow drive in with all the neon signs. There also was one on old highway 20 near downtown Waterloo. Now I gotta go find one and get a dog!

Working on Minnie's right now. Hope to have it out by Monday!
Every trip to Fox Lake Illinois we would always stop. It’s been a long time, but well into the ‘80’s it was still original style. Awesome channel keep it up!!
It's still operating.
Once again you took me back to fond memories. Thank you. I loved Dog-N-Suds. In my town it later became an A&W, but just wasn’t the same. We never had a Frostie’s, but I still drank many of their bottled root beers. 😃
I'm one of the lucky ones. I live in Lafayette and just eat at one of our Dog N Suds yesterday, Yummy.
Yes you are! Good stuff!
@@restaurantrewind9026 North Oakland, and Mt. Zion, were two locations,, where was the third? South rt48?
T Roy love the channel! It's interesting to here the history about these companies. Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you so much! More to come, so stay tuned!
Hope we've done it justice! Thanks for watching!
Kristen Cook it's Elyria township. I car hopped for them in 82.
tina hardman thanks for clarifying! I always call that area the wrong city. I never remember if it's considered Elyria, Sheffield, or Lorain. Lol!
Kristen Cook:Glad is still on 254,the area has definitely seen better days but am happy it's managed to survive.I live in Sheffield Lake and always look forward to summer and getting a Texas burger & Coney dog with mug of root beer to enjoy.👍
Louis Aloi I always order their Pizza Burger. I also love their deep fried cauliflower!
Norton Shores Michigan is still open , and the root beer is still fantastic!!
Do a story on Aurthur Treachers Fish and Chips! Enjoyed your Dog and Suds recap. Their Root beer was the BEST!!!
I actually have done one on Arthur's....check out the channel, let me know if you don't see it.
I loved the Dog n Suds in Speedway Indiana. I used to eat there two or three times a week. My favorite was the Coney dog, fried mushrooms and creme soda!
Dog and Suds were the best! I was raised in Wichita, KS and they had them everywhere.
There used to be a DNS over here in Keene NH. I think it went local sometime in the late 60s or early 70s, and went belly up soon afterwards. Until I saw this video, I had no idea it was originally part of a national chain.
We still have one, here in Greeley, Colorado. JB's Drive-In still sells their goodies!
William Grantham yes JBs is a nice place!
@@restaurantrewind9026 woah. If you're ever around, dinners on me. Did NOT expect a reply.
The Dog N Suds just opened for the season in Richmond, Il. The owners Jan and Kurt are back and ready to serve up some of that creamy Root Beer!!
These are awesome videos. So so much nostalgia!
Thanks so much!
Sedalia Missouri used to have a Dog n Suds. The structure still stands but is now Kehde's BBQ. They have old DnS memorabilia on display inside.
My neighbor owned the one in Manhattan, KS. I worked at it out of high school(1971) to pay for college.
Richmond is definitely a good one....I need to get there soon.
Calvin Napier I’ll see what I can find. Glad you enjoyed the videos! Thanks for watching!
We still have two Dog N Suds where i live in northern Illinois. its always a treat to go there. Its one thing from my childhood i will always remember. you just don't see drive in restaurants anymore.
Robin Johnson so true!
I have one near me in Gurnee,I'll.still looks the same.great food.
There was a Dog N Suds in West Plains, Missouri for several years and when I dined there, they had great service as well as good food and drink. I'm not sure if they are still there or not.
Kiel Pouchlaw there is one in Paragould Ar. Still operating.
Sorry to say that the West Plains Missouri location is gone.
3:30 is in my town! I live in paragould arkansas, and still eat at this place!
We have 2 still. Lafayette and West Lafayette. The good ol' Arf & Barf. It's only open from Spring to just after Halloween.
Cherish it! I miss it more than I can say from my childhood in Kirtland, OH.
One on Bob's Big Boy would be fun to see here! Of course we know how that ended up. I'm just glad I still have Frisch's to go to here in Ohio!
I can remember going to the DNS in St. Johns, Michigan many years ago. It is a Auto repair shop now that still uses part of the original building. I have drove by a operating DNS in Muskegon, MI just 2 years ago.
I was just at the Dog N Suds in Muskegon in December!
We still have a Dog n Suds hear in Williams Lake B.C. Canada it’s open and yes you can get a coney dog and a root beer
Still have 2 in my hometown of Muskegon, MI. You should do a video about Hot n Now. That is straight up nostalgia for me.
My wife has fond memories of Dog n Suds, there are none left in our state, but, the fact that some still remain is a great reason for a road trip !
Remember there used to be one in Belle Vernon,Pa.Long time ago though.
My sister worked at the DNS in Grand Haven, MI back in the early '70s! I'm excited to hear about one still being in Muskegon. We both live in other states now, though.
I worked at the Grand Haven, MI Dog N' Suds in the late 60s and early 70s. Loved every minute of it.
kabookieclown it’s worth the trip! :-)
I'm in KY, but sis is in NW Indiana. Maybe next time I visit she can take me there! My uncle was a district manager for Burger Chef, and my first job was at the one in Grand Haven in 1975. I'm loving all your videos. Thanks for your good work.
...yes, there's a Dog n Suds in Muskegon on Grand Haven Rd.
@@olofpalme63 one further north in Montague/ Whitehall too . They use the original Coney sauce too . Have not been to the Muskegon one but I read reviews that said Montague was more original ..Thanks
The one I always remember from my childhood was in Colville WA. Used to go there early 70's with my parents and we always stopped in on the way home (lived in Grand Forks BC Canada at the time). Great memories. Thanks!
I remember as a child going on a trip and getting dog and suds. Absolutely best root beer ever. Hot dogs were just average.
Great to see brand loyalty still alive. Thanks. (subscribed)
OF COURSE I want to hear about the Minnie Pearl Chicken Debacle !!! who wouldn't!
Have you heard of the Lone Ranger Resturants?? they came and went quickly
they were hamburger joints
had one here in Akron, Ohio just down the street from North high school. On hot days my cousin and I would either ride our bikes to Dairy Queeen or Dog n Suds couldn't beat the root beer at dog n suds or the hot dogs. when it shut down it became a veterinarian office!
mark murawski wow, a vet, huh?
Thanks for making this video. Dog N Suds brings back a lot of memories of my hometown, Rockford Illinois. My parents used to take us there a lot on Friday nights and one of my uncles used to take me there to help him pick up girls lol. I guess I was a cute kid or something because it worked a lot of times. Speaking of Rockford ... it's about time to order some Mrs Fischer's potato chips.
I bought some memorabilia from the DNS location on Harlem in Rockford a few years ago. Sadly it closed the year after I was up there. :-(
You showed a picture of the dog n suds in Paragould Arkansas I grew up in the house across the street in the picture ate at that dog n suds countless times judging by the cars and the house on corner still there I would say I was living there when this picture was taken
My neighbors grandmother took us there every day after school my 4th grade year. It was the best drive in I've ever experienced.
Seth Thomas loved all the neon!
There is still a Dog N Suds in William's Lake British Columbia Canada,It was just recently renovated. It has been there since the 70's
I'm from Decatur Illinois as well. I remember the Sandy's at Jasper and Eldo and I think there was one by St. T. Where was the third? Great Series. LOVE IT!
Hi Rick! The third was at Oakland and Eldo where the Hardees is now. I think one color photo I used in the vid is of that location as a Sandy's. I think we met years ago at Pla-Mor Fitness Center. You lived in Oreana, correct? I used to live on West Plains. I moved to Chatham 2 years ago when I took a job with BUNN...just sold my last house in Argenta 2 weeks ago!
I remember that location now. Yep. I used to go to Pla-Mor. My nephew just took a job with Bunn last year. Small world! My email is my name at gmail etc. Love the series. Keep up the great work! PS(Sister-in-laws 1st job was at Dog n Suds!)
There was one in Independence Mo. until 2008 when it closed and reopened under a different name and closed about 2 years latter.
I remember an dog n suds in RICHLAND CENTER,Wisconsin back in the 1970's but they left and an McDonald's was built on that location
There's a few left here around Indiana. I freaking love that place! I honestly thought these were still nationwide, just in much smaller numbers. Now I've got to go get some dog N suds to eat!
The pork tenderloin sandwich was wonderful and butterscotch malts were the best I’ve ever had
We had a dog and suds restaurant in Darien, Illinois when I was growing up in the early 70s. One winter my mother my brother and I cross country skied from our house to the drive in. Quite a distance!
