I've only just found out about this show what's wrong with the theme song? It sounds ok-if not maybe a bit generic for a Disney song. From what I gather the issue is just *a* voice actor (presumably the main character's one) causing damaging drama and not the show itself.

Not to mention that the show also accentuates the stereotype of Spanish families being massive. So basically, they fucked up by being the usual racist Disney writers.

I think Primos is the perfect representation of the disconnect between “Latinxs” in America and the countries their families were originally from. They want to be Latinos so badly, but they can barely speak the language and they unironically think the entire continent has the same traditions and culture as Mexico.

I can see what you mean by that at least somewhat. I’m one of those white washed Mexican Americans. I didn’t grow up speaking Spanish or celebrate some of the Mexican traditions. My Mexican family on my dad’s side speaks some Spanish like my grandparents while my dad and his siblings were the first generation of our family to not be fully taught Spanish. I’m sure some of my cousins were taught but my brother and I weren’t. The closest I got to my culture was the food and that’s about it. I’ve been trying to learn more though about Mexican culture and hopefully someday learn Spanish. Something new I found out about my family history is that one of my great grandparents moved here from Mexico. Sadly I never got to meet any of the great grandparents on my dad’s side of the family.
Granted it was probably not gonna do well regardless, but the VA making those comments did make the show’s reputation worse and any chance that could’ve been given was gone
Honestly, it’s not the Hispanic part that has me upset about this show, it just looks so boring. The premise of a girl stuck with her cousins for the summer just feels overdone, and i’m not really interested in learning about all those characters that they mentioned. I’m sorry, but I feel like even a very young person would get kind of bored with this show.
Best bet is they're gonna dump the whole first season of the series right on Disney Plus. Make the most sense and Disney is not gonna waste a whole completed show that hasn't even came out yet.

Literally if the protagonist’s VA didn’t upload her public meltdown over people’s reactions to “Oye Primos” and just explained that the lead character is still trying to grasp proper Spanish (you know, because they’re a kid) then I don’t think anyone would’ve gotten so enraged over this show…that and not naming the youngest cousin a Spanish word for female anatomy, like why did they do that?
I think they named her that only because of the direct translation of “cockroach” But the show made it clear that they weren’t willing to actually pay close attention to how it’s used.
Considering this was a ripoff of the loud house and that the creator didn't even bother to do the translations of the language right when they are supposedly representing a culture cant say i feel bad for this

@@kitart1583literally wrong this was based on the creators childhood experiences. The title isn't a mistranslation, it's just a informal way of speaking. Like saying "Hay" instead of "Hello" and was intentional as the character was meant to have broken Spanish.
I think the show should at least be allowed to flop instead of just being taken out back before it can even do that, doesn't seem fair to at least not give it a chance :/
This reminded me of when Nick jr cancelled a preschool show called Made by Maddie before it even premiered back in 2020 because a lot of people on social media were accusing it of plagiarizing character designs from the Sony animation short hair love. I could see Disney doing the same thing to this show with all the backlash it got
The character designs in Hair Love were soooo unique, nobody could have ever independently come up with an ordinary looking African American family with African American hairstyles. Impossible
I never knew this existed so it being a thing and then being gone is like an adult saying they told you to pick one from the store but you were never told beforehand, leaving the store confused as hell.

As someone who is mexican, they really fucked up if they got every latino group to hate the show. Usually mexicans don't care about stereotypes in media (ex. when other people freaked out about mario in a pancho in oddessy, we didn't care or thought it was cool) but the way they handled it here.....yikes

Earthquake Heights is a pretty baller name for a California town. I personally would've gone with Burnsquake Heights. Gotta reference all the natural disasters we have a California accurately!
It might sound like a cool name, if you dont know the significance that earthquakes have to Latinos, specially in Mexico and Chile. Two of the most devastating eartquakes ever recorded were held on Mexico City, one on 2017. Both left a massive impact on the country and were considered as tragedies remembered to this day. Stuff like that just shows the disconnect of the creators of the show and the culture they are trying to represent. That disconnect is the reason Latinos rejected the show.
I feel like it’s a project with such a specific perspective it’s main problem was it’s mass media. Like it having a real specific sense of humour and dialect of Spanglish wouldn’t even register if it was a web series
I mean, I try to be open minded and as a kid I watched a lot of shows that nowadays get mocked by their artstyle, like most of Klaksy-Csupo's works, but I think those shows at least had memorable characters and they were actually kind of well designed. Primos, on the other hand, looks like it has the same overused designs that cartoons have been using since the 2010s, I think the way the eyes and mouths are drawn is the things that kind of disturbs me the most. But the thing is that the concept art for the show manages to look worse and better depending on the character

I completely agree. The hatred for the show is honestly over the top. Were some of the decisions questionable? Yes. But I was still curious and willing to give it a shot. It was just a theme song and maybe the song will make sense in context of the show. I say this as a Latina myself.
Yeah. It sucks for an artist to not see their work make it big when it was RIGHT THERE. But that’s what happens when you open your mouth and say things you shouldn’t. Address criticism to make your art that much cooler. Not tease people for “not understanding the intentions behind it.” This was a huge PR disaster that ultimately fell on them partially (Referring to the VA’s. They’re at fault mostly)
As a mexican animator myself, i am glad this project is being shelved, we should give voices to ACTUAL latinoamericans who want to create something new and fun, instead of just a loud house ripoff full of stereotypes created by someone who doesn't even speak the language of the country they are claiming to be representing and that was extremely rude when people of the actual country called her out for it. Latinoamericans famously love any kind of representation we can get, so for this project to be so hated, you know you screwed up

Basically kids that have Mexican parents, but they grew up in the US and never had any connection being from that country. 2) That rude person that you are referring to is actually the Main character voice actor. She did not created the show, and it's not fair to correlate her smug attitude with the creator. Also, it's very likely the VA tried to settle the dispute with her video without anyone knowing it and it basically cost her (and everyone else) job for going rogue. The show is still problematic but I think it's the marketing department that tried to treat this show as representative of all Latin America and not representative to a group of people who aren't 100% Latino nor 100% Americans but between the two.
I don’t care because I assume it’s just a Loud House clone, but I do feel a little bad that it’s likely never going to see the light of day. I imagine this show was likely some starry-eyed young animator’s first real project that they were excited to work on only for a voice actor to get it canned. Like, I’d hope it releases (mid as it likely would be) just for the creatives working on it to see their project finished. It’s like punishing the whole class because one student was caught goofing off. Anything going from “in production” to “cancelled” is a bummer for someone.

The backlash was phony and overblown imo. The voice actor made it worse with that dumb response, yeah. But people got overly triggered and defensive over their bad understanding of the show's background. Some of the other "proof" that people were trying to use to claim the creators were gringos was presented in WILDLY bad faith. This stinks for the team and I hope for the best with them in future projects.
I don't feel bad when I say that I hope this show bombs as badly as we all expect it to when they quietly drop this on Disney+. I hope the animators, voice actors, and the rest of the crew can find a better project to work on.
Disney won't cancel it. This is the same company that is still planning on releasing the Snow White remake after several delays, set catching fire, all of the Rachel Zegler problems, and sinking several million dollars. I think it would be best to cancel the show, but if we've seen anything in the last couple of years, it's that Disney hates good ideas.
If that's true, especially considering they are renaming some of the characters and places names, why didn't they do a lot more research when the show was in pre-production in the first place? I mean, Disney probably has a lot of diversity and cultural departments, you can see them being mention in the credits for some of their movies like Moana, Coco and Encanto, which take place in other countries, didn't the Primos' staff knew that some of the characters' names could be misinterpreted across different Spanish-speaking countries or that naming a city "Earthquake Heights" could have been seen as bad taste for Mexicans and Chileans? I'm mean, even as someone living in South America, I didn't think Primos looked so bad just for its first teaser and I know the show is meant to represent the experience of kids of Latino descent living in the U.S., but all of the marketing focus in the Latino aspect/identity and when people in Latin America discovered the show they complained about the typical stereotypes and intentional bad grammar (which makes sense in the show context, but left a bad impression on most people)
Im interested to see the world building, i hope they fix the mistakes and then release it. But the first episode must be good or else people won't give it a chance

No it’s not cancelled. I heard from my friends who just finished working on the show said that it’s almost done with season one. I’m guessing that they are finishing off the animation and that’s it. Just no announcement of the date yet.

Oh boy, this show was close to becoming the Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for Disney TVA. While the Television unit had their stinkers in the past like Shnookums and Meat, Pickle and Peanut, Quack Pack, and The Mighty Ducks to name a few, they mostly ranged from either meriocre at best or so bad that's cheesy at worst. But this show on the other hand, this could've ruined the good name for Disney TVA considering their reputation is at an all time high in this decade with their shows being regarded as modern classics and they're rivaling the highs of both the Cartoon Network Renaissance from the 2010s and the Golden age of the NickToons from 1991 to 2004. The release of the show's theme song was enough of a blow, but if the company relased the show without any changes then a similar effect to what happened with SEGA with Sonic Boom could've happened to Disney TVA. Causing multiple shows getting cancelled that are currently in development and sink the company's reputation so low to the point of absolute shame.

The problem is the fact that everyone jumped to the conclusion that this show is representative towards Hispanic culture that covers two continents. In reality, the show covers Chicanos who are Hispanic descendants born and raised in the US and the creator is a Chicana. The creator just used her childhood as the foundation of the show since many other show runners had done something similar to their own shows. But I guess Disney framed it as a Latino show for Latin America which create a mob mentality from the Latinos. For example, the main character, Tater, mostly speak English because she grew up in an English speaking country. Only her mom is Mexican and speak Spanish, but that's not enough for Tater to fluently speak Spanish thus she speaks broken Spanish. It is problematic to normalized a broken grammar through the title of the show, but many Hispanic kids living in the US don't know much about Spanish. Either the parents don't have time to teach them to speak Spanish or they don't want them to be "outsiders" in English speaking schools. It's a Chicano experience that most Latinos don't know. There's also the location of the show where it's literally Los Angeles. The intro showed the Hollywood sign and an interstate number that connects with Spanish speaking neighborhoods. People assume she lived in a Mexican town, but that's not remotely true. The creator lives in Los Angeles, the city has a lot of earthquake hence the name and it's a smoggy place hence the warm color filter. People thought it was Mexico because of the orange filter that movies and TV shows used to portray Mexico, and people also thought the name, Terremoto, was a joke on a devastating earthquake that happened in Mexico City a few years ago. Granted, naming a town or neighborhood after natural disasters is definitely not something you should do. Even if everyone knows it was Los Angeles, plenty of people died by earthquakes in Los Angeles so it's still distasteful. Then there's her family. Tbh, Disney want a Loud House rip off to gain some viewers and the creator just have an idea of having her cousins to spend the summer at her house as a show. Yeah, most of the characters are just cousins and not siblings despite what people on Twitter would say. Although it interesting to note that one name that is a slang to the V, is actually a slang for little girls in some countries. It's no different to "fanny" which is okay to say in the US, but incredibly offensive to say in the UK (Because fanny means the V in the British isles). It wasn't the creator's fault to not knowing a specific word having a different meaning in another Spanish country when her Spanish parents use it normally. Overall, it's just bad miscommunication as the show is about Chicanos, and Chicanos are basically controversial as a group. A lot of immigrant children are seen as not Hispanic enough in the eyes of people from the homeland. A lot of Mexicans online don't see the creator as Mexican enough despite having a Mexican mom. The creator along with other Chicanos haven't lived in a Mexican society so they shouldn't be called Mexican-Americans, but they're not American enough in the US to be called purely American. There's some identity issues for kids who came from immigrants, and they can't really be one or another. If Disney advertise it as a Chicano show and it's about Mexican-Americans instead of representing all of Latin America, maybe the reception wouldn't be as toxic as now.

I think Primos is the perfect representation of the disconnect between “Latinxs” in America and the countries their families were originally from. I can see what you mean by that at least somewhat. I’m one of those white washed Mexican Americans. I didn’t grow up speaking Spanish or celebrate some of the Mexican traditions. My Mexican family on my dad’s side speaks some Spanish like my grandparents while my dad and his siblings were the first generation of our family to not be fully taught Spanish. I’m sure some of my cousins were taught but my brother and I weren’t. The closest I got to my culture was the food and that’s about it. I’ve been trying to learn more though about Mexican culture and hopefully someday learn Spanish. Something new I found out about my family history is that one of my great grandparents moved here from Mexico. Sadly I never got to meet any of the great grandparents on my dad’s side of the family.
Granted it was probably not gonna do well regardless, but the VA making those comments did make the show’s reputation worse and any chance that could’ve been given was gone

Honestly, it’s not the Hispanic part that has me upset about this show, it just looks so boring. The premise of a girl stuck with her cousins for the summer just feels overdone, and i’m not really interested in learning about all those characters that they mentioned. I’m sorry, but I feel like even a very young person would get kind of bored with this show.
Apparently, the house was originally going to be by the side of a desert, wich would have made the show a bit more interesting, Imo.
Best bet is they're gonna dump the whole first season of the series right on Disney Plus. Make the most sense and Disney is not gonna waste a whole completed show that hasn't even came out yet.

Literally if the protagonist’s VA didn’t upload her public meltdown over people’s reactions to “Oye Primos” and just explained that the lead character is still trying to grasp proper Spanish (you know, because they’re a kid) then I don’t think anyone would’ve gotten so enraged over this show…that and not naming the youngest cousin a Spanish word for female anatomy, like why did they do that?
I think they named her that only because of the direct translation of “cockroach”
But the show made it clear that they weren’t willing to actually pay close attention to how it’s used.

@@kitart1583literally wrong this was based on the creators childhood experiences. The title isn't a mistranslation, it's just a informal way of speaking. Like saying "Hay" instead of "Hello" and was intentional as the character was meant to have broken Spanish.

This reminded me of when Nick jr cancelled a preschool show called Made by Maddie before it even premiered back in 2020 because a lot of people on social media were accusing it of plagiarizing character designs from the Sony animation short hair love. I could see Disney doing the same thing to this show with all the backlash it got
The character designs in Hair Love were soooo unique, nobody could have ever independently come up with an ordinary looking African American family with African American hairstyles. Impossible

It might sound like a cool name, if you dont know the significance that earthquakes have to Latinos, specially in Mexico and Chile. Two of the most devastating eartquakes ever recorded were held on Mexico City, one on 2017. Both left a massive impact on the country and were considered as tragedies remembered to this day. Stuff like that just shows the disconnect of the creators of the show and the culture they are trying to represent. That disconnect is the reason Latinos rejected the show.

I mean, I try to be open minded and as a kid I watched a lot of shows that nowadays get mocked by their artstyle, like most of Klaksy-Csupo's works, but I think those shows at least had memorable characters and they were actually kind of well designed. Primos, on the other hand, looks like it has the same overused designs that cartoons have been using since the 2010s, I think the way the eyes and mouths are drawn is the things that kind of disturbs me the most. But the thing is that the concept art for the show manages to look worse and better depending on the character

Yeah. It sucks for an artist to not see their work make it big when it was RIGHT THERE. But that’s what happens when you open your mouth and say things you shouldn’t. Address criticism to make your art that much cooler. Not tease people for “not understanding the intentions behind it.” This was a huge PR disaster that ultimately fell on them partially

As a mexican animator myself, i am glad this project is being shelved, we should give voices to ACTUAL latinoamericans who want to create something new and fun, instead of just a loud house ripoff full of stereotypes created by someone who doesn't even speak the language of the country they are claiming to be representing and that was extremely rude when people of the actual country called her out for it. 1) The creator is a Chicano and the show was made for Chicanos. Basically kids that have Mexican parents, but they grew up in the US and never had any connection being from that country.
2) That rude person that you are referring to is actually the Main character voice actor. She did not created the show, and it's not fair to correlate her smug attitude with the creator. Also, it's very likely the VA tried to settle the dispute with her video without anyone knowing it and it basically cost her (and everyone else) job for going rogue.
The show is still problematic but I think it's the marketing department that tried to treat this show as representative of all Latin America and not representative to a group of people who aren't 100% Latino nor 100% Americans but between the two.

I don’t care because I assume it’s just a Loud House clone, but I do feel a little bad that it’s likely never going to see the light of day. I imagine this show was likely some starry-eyed young animator’s first real project that they were excited to work on only for a voice actor to get it canned. Like, I’d hope it releases (mid as it likely would be) just for the creatives working on it to see their project finished. It’s like punishing the whole class because one student was caught goofing off. Anything going from “in production” to “cancelled” is a bummer for someone.
The Wikipedia page said "June 6, 2024" which was based on a misunderstanding from a 2021 webpage.

The backlash was phony and overblown imo. The voice actor made it worse with that dumb response, yeah. But people got overly triggered and defensive over their bad understanding of the show's background. Some of the other "proof" that people were trying to use to claim the creators were gringos was presented in WILDLY bad faith. This stinks for the team and I hope for the best with them in future projects.
It's now July, the show is not out, and Disney are radio-silent on the matter. It's been cancelled. Good riddance.

Disney won't cancel it. This is the same company that is still planning on releasing the Snow White remake after several delays, set catching fire, all of the Rachel Zegler problems, and sinking several million dollars. I think it would be best to cancel the show, but if we've seen anything in the last couple of years, it's that Disney hates good ideas.

If that's true, especially considering they are renaming some of the characters and places names, why didn't they do a lot more research when the show was in pre-production in the first place? I mean, Disney probably has a lot of diversity and cultural departments, you can see them being mention in the credits for some of their movies like Moana, Coco and Encanto, which take place in other countries, didn't the Primos' staff knew that some of the characters' names could be misinterpreted across different Spanish-speaking countries or that naming a city "Earthquake Heights" could have been seen as bad taste for Mexicans and Chileans?
I'm mean, even as someone living in South America, I didn't think Primos looked so bad just for its first teaser and I know the show is meant to represent the experience of kids of Latino descent living in the U.S., but all of the marketing focus in the Latino aspect/identity and when people in Latin America discovered the show they complained about the typical stereotypes and intentional bad grammar (which makes sense in the show context, but left a bad impression on most people)
Im interested to see the world building, i hope they fix the mistakes and then release it. But the first episode must be good or else people won't give it a chance

Oh boy, this show was close to becoming the Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for Disney TVA. While the Television unit had their stinkers in the past like Shnookums and Meat, Pickle and Peanut, Quack Pack, and The Mighty Ducks to name a few, they mostly ranged from either meriocre at best or so bad that's cheesy at worst. But this show on the other hand, this could've ruined the good name for Disney TVA considering their reputation is at an all time high in this decade with their shows being regarded as modern classics and they're rivaling the highs of both the Cartoon Network Renaissance from the 2010s and the Golden age of the NickToons from 1991 to 2004. The release of the show's theme song was enough of a blow, but if the company relased the show without any changes then a similar effect to what happened with SEGA with Sonic Boom could've happened to Disney TVA. Causing multiple shows getting cancelled that are currently in development and sink the company's reputation so low to the point of absolute shame.

I would like to point out, calling the town "Earthquake" while being a rather unflatteringly inspired by Mexico in places was unbelievably tone deaf from the show makers, to those not in the know, Mexico had some pretty bad earthquakes in the past (specifically around September) someone once pointed out, it's like writing a place inspired in USA called "School Shooting Town"
It's not inspired by Mexico. It's inspired by LA, which also experiences earthquakes. Specifically, it's based on the creator's childhood.

From what I can to understand this show was highly offensive to the Latin community. Which I'm not going to lie for a company like Disney that's so obsessed with their DEI I'm really surprised they'd make something so controversial and that was meant to appeal to the Latin community.
It seems like some loud people were offended, as a Latino, I never heard anyone on my circles talk about it... and for what I can understand, most of the offended were more in the grammar police department rather than the cultural department... and also people who hate the entitled voice actress.
To be fair, most of the things that are found "offensive" are stuff that latinos tell to ourselves on a daily basis, probably a case of "we can call ourselves that, but not anyone autside of our demographic, even if self deprecation is our main joke in soial media" so... meh, I'm not that insecure to care enough.

Theyve somehow become so tolerant and anti racist that theve horse shoed and become super hateful and ridiculously racist where the only characters they can write are essentially racist caricatures. When you can tell based solely off the color of a characters skin and their sexuality whos gonna be evil or whos gonna be a bumbling idiot and whos gonna be perfect and beyond reproach something has gone seriously wrong.
The problem is the fact that everyone jumped to the conclusion that this show is representative towards Hispanic culture that covers two continents. In reality, the show covers Chicanos who are Hispanic descendants born and raised in the US and the creator is a Chicana. The creator just used her childhood as the foundation of the show since many other show runners had done something similar to their own shows. But I guess Disney framed it as a Latino show for Latin America which create a mob mentality from the Latinos.
For example, the main character, Tater, mostly speak English because she grew up in an English speaking country. Only her mom is Mexican and speak Spanish, but that's not enough for Tater to fluently speak Spanish thus she speaks broken Spanish. It is problematic to normalized a broken grammar through the title of the show, but many Hispanic kids living in the US don't know much about Spanish. Either the parents don't have time to teach them to speak Spanish or they don't want them to be "outsiders" in English speaking schools. It's a Chicano experience that most Latinos don't know.
There's also the location of the show where it's literally Los Angeles. The intro showed the Hollywood sign and an interstate number that connects with Spanish speaking neighborhoods. People assume she lived in a Mexican town, but that's not remotely true. The creator lives in Los Angeles, the city has a lot of earthquake hence the name and it's a smoggy place hence the warm color filter. People thought it was Mexico because of the orange filter that movies and TV shows used to portray Mexico, and people also thought the name, Terremoto, was a joke on a devastating earthquake that happened in Mexico City a few years ago. Granted, naming a town or neighborhood after natural disasters is definitely not something you should do. Even if everyone knows it was Los Angeles, plenty of people died by earthquakes in Los Angeles so it's still distasteful.
Then there's her family. Tbh, Disney want a Loud House rip off to gain some viewers and the creator just have an idea of having her cousins to spend the summer at her house as a show. Yeah, most of the characters are just cousins and not siblings despite what people on Twitter would say. Although it interesting to note that one name that is a slang to the V, is actually a slang for little girls in some countries. It's no different to "fanny" which is okay to say in the US, but incredibly offensive to say in the UK (Because fanny means the V in the British isles). It wasn't the creator's fault to not knowing a specific word having a different meaning in another Spanish country when her Spanish parents use it normally.
Overall, it's just bad miscommunication as the show is about Chicanos, and Chicanos are basically controversial as a group. A lot of immigrant children are seen as not Hispanic enough in the eyes of people from the homeland. A lot of Mexicans online don't see the creator as Mexican enough despite having a Mexican mom. The creator along with other Chicanos haven't lived in a Mexican society so they shouldn't be called Mexican-Americans, but they're not American enough in the US to be called purely American. There's some identity issues for kids who came from immigrants, and they can't really be one or another. If Disney advertise it as a Chicano show and it's about Mexican-Americans instead of representing all of Latin America, maybe the reception wouldn't be as toxic as now.

A lot of people here calling the show bad when all we got was a theme song and a few questionable word choices. It could've been decent show, who knows.
Also, is the Loud House the only show that's allowed to have a big family?
