This is Part 3 of a series finding every PTCG illustration with other Pokemon in them, this time examining the short-lived e-Card era and some Wizards promos!
Sources: Bulbapedia, Efour, Pkmncards, Pokumon
Music: Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Pokemon Puzzle League
Ken Sugimori spoke about his approach to drawing Forest Guardian in the excellent 2016 Pokémon TCG Illustration Collection book!
Wow you're right, he did draw it! I've never seen this referenced anywhere! Here's the condensed quote:
"I drew Forest Guardian to see if I could change my style… At the time of Lass (Base Set), I was drawing the illustrations by hand and painting in the colors… I started using computer-based image-editing software from the time of Pokemon Gold & Silver, I gradually got used to it, and just when I had learned to use it pretty well, I drew Forest Guardian. There is no main line in that illustration, and I completed the piece like an oil painting.”
@@DeltaSeeker I just got that book a few weeks ago, it's an invaluable reference resource for people like you and just fans in general like me. Love the content, thanks!
@@gyropunmaster Thanks for calling out that book! I'm collecting the cards primarily because of the artwork, so that looks like it would be great to flip through!
@@Flopsaurus No worries, I hope you can find a copy somewhere, I got mine online like new for relatively cheap!
Just found your channel a few days ago and really love this series! As someone who spends a lot of time looking at card art for fun, you’re still showing off some stuff I didn’t know about. I own that Ditto with the cave paintings, but didn’t know about the other two that feature it, too. Super cool. Anyway, these vids are presented so nicely, great work!
Same actually, weird
Same as well, that's very interesting 🧍
In fact, most of this video's trivia has been lifted wholesale from the comments section of the pkmncards fansite! While Delta Seeker didn't credit or acknowledge anyone for their work in this video, it's a great site to check out as tons of users have documented all kinds of information like this.
Fun Fact! The Relic Hunter is a character named "Yurika" who first appeared in Kagemaru Himeno's How I Became a Pokemon Card manga. She was a rival of sorts to a character named Junk and she had encounters with the Rhydon from the Jungle set and the Dark Dugtrio from Team Rocket set. She also used Team Rocket's Digger device!
Whoa, there are real canonical stories attached to some of the stories on the cards? I really feel like these cards let the imagination run wild, which was undoubtedly the intent. It makes the world of Pokemon feel that much more grand and in this case, incredibly mysterious. A whole region based around the Ruins of Alph scenes sounds like such an intriguing idea and this classic art really brought that to life.
Your theory about the magikarp card being a reference to salmon returning to the ocean is spot on, as magikarp, specifically, is based off the Japanese legend that if a salmon makes that trip upriver 100 times it turns into a dragon (hence why Gyarados looks nothing like its pre evolution)
I always though magikarp was based on a carp or rather a magical karp
@@dartvid I can see why you would think so based on the name Magickarp.
The myth is about carp/koi not salmon ^^;;;
This channel is actually insane :)
Great content! I've recently been binging your videos and I'm hooked. I'm glad I'm not the only one who obsessed over every detail in Pokemon cards and the Pokemon TCG Game Boy game. I've been playing the English translated ROM of Pokémon Card GB2: Here Comes Team GR! and it's been really interesting. It's filled with new cards and content that would make for an interesting video. The game starts off the exact same as the first game and then surprisingly opens up into an entirely new island to explore. It's pretty amazing and I'd love to hear the story of why it never came out in America. Actually I'd love any content on that gem of a game. Anyway, thanks for reading and keep up the great work!
If there's a genre for comfy videos to watch in bed, this is one of them.
Loving every minute of the series. Looking forward to part 4
Something super interesting is card art that uses screenshots or assets from the video games.
Pokemon reversal at 1:42 is from the stadium games, and Lucky Stadium 10:39 uses the models from Super Smash Bros. Melee.
The Charizard model is actually from Charizards TROPHIE rather than the in-game model.
Presumably "Big Mama" Tagawa had some sort of asset library or worked with 3D graphics across multiple projects. I don't know of any other instance of the assets from SSBM being re-used like this so it makes the asset library theory pretty interesting. Super cool.
CAN'T WAIT FOR PART 4
Dude I'm LOVING this content, and this is coming from someone who has never had an interest in the Pokemon TCG. The fact that you keep someone with no prior interest investing in your videos shows you have a good thing going on. Great stuff man!
The (Japanese contest) kid drawn Snorlax is very adorable and cool
I hadn't realised that Energy Removal 2 had the same name as Energy Removal in Japan, but from what I've read of the rules of Japanese tournaments at the time it makes sense, with the rules mentioning an erata for Energy Removal and Super Energy Removal to their version 2 effects. At the time, a bunch of trainers like Oak, Bill, Rocket's Sneak Attack and Lass among others also had an erata that turned them into supporters.
Awesome video! Thank you for making these!
I love this series 🥹 So glad to see it continue!
Looking forward to more of these :D i literally wanted to go to sleep cuz its very late but then watched this series. I only played pokemon cards back in the day and now I play Yu-Gi-Oh! But recently I started picking it up again cuz of a gurl and I have many fun memories of it as well as MANY MANY CARDS even cards you show.
Buddy I cannot express to you how much I appreciate your inclusion of the 🔥FIRE🔥 music that is the Pokémon Puzzle League Soundtrack!!!!!
You've such good content for such a small creator. I gotta catch up with your earlier videos.
Would you look at that! I just saw parts 1 and 2 for the first time yesterday. Didn't think you were gonna make this one
I dont know why the views are way less for this video but please don't give up, I love your content 🙏🏼
I never quite realized how the later E-series cards shared locations like that! The only one I knew was the Ho-oh Nazca line set.
Dude wth i just discovered your channel 2 days ago and now a new video already? I love the content man
I was never into TCG but this channel sparked my interest, not too late to join
I also only discovered your channel recently and didn’t think this series would be picked up again, it’s been a year and a half!! Great stuff !!!!
Every video on this channel is a banger!
Always good to see a new DeltaSeeker video pop up in my subscription box.
yooo another upload! i subbed after finding ur channel a bit ago
Excellent video just like the others! Cool to hear random Pokemon trivia with the cards. You're doing great with these!
The Magikarp waterfall card actually references Chinese folklore. It’s told that a carp that can swim upstream and jump a waterfall will turn into a dragon, just as Magikarp turns into a Gyarados
I really had no idea that the artwork in Aquapolis and Skyridge have so much continuity with one another
Glad to see you've returned to this series! Only saw the last two last week so timed it well - hope it does well for you!
Seeing the shared locations is really interesting! These e-reader era cards always looked really strange to me as they're from the second gen but their aesthetic feels much more akin to gen 3
Energy removal was the worst meta mechanic to go up against. Even the people playing those decks weren't having any fun.
recently found all your content and was hoping you would upload again soon!!! i got what i wanted amazing little videos :D
Never knew about that english exclusive Pokemon Center card, that's cool
The Magikarp theory about spawning also relates to the legend of a carp climbing a waterfall called the Dragon Gate. If a carp can successfully scale it, then it becomes a dragon. Because of this legend the carp is a symbol of determination and perseverance, and a lot of that gets lost in the localization of Pokemon.
Something really cool about the Pokemon Center Promo Lucky Stadium is that Pikachu & Pichu seem to be using their models from Super Smash Bros Melee.
Either that or the illustrator used their Melee models as reference when creating the art.
discovered your channel not too long ago but you’ve instantly become my favourite pokémon tcg youtuber. hearing someone dedicate their time to discussing history and more obscure content pertaining to it has been something i’ve wanted for a while. keep up the great work! hoping more people discover your channel :)
There is so much great artwork in the pokemon tcg! thanks for making this series
Seen your channel recommended on someone else's history of pokemone meta. Good stuff you got going on here bro!
I remember as kids my friends and I would say we had a Mew card since there's a Mew in the background of this one trainer card called like Pokémon field researcher or something
that is the fastest ending to any youtube video i've ever seen, holy shit lol
These videos are so fire.
I love that I found this series! Good research must have taken forever lol
Awesome video! I have a few cameo cards myself, and I've always wanted to see more of them, so this is really cool to see! Looking forward to seeing part 4 too :D
The e-series cards are absolutely my favorite. Loving your content!
I love this channel so much, nothing makes me happier than people talking about the card game
The return of this series! Glad I started following this channel recently
So cool !! You're doing some really great work here :)
There’s a certain charm to the E-Card series that few other sets can match!
Love these kinds of videos keep them up! Also i loved the ending 😂
the editing on these vids is so good
Yes I loved the first 2 parts
BABE WAKE UP NEW DELTASEEKER
HECK YEAH New Delta Seeker episode!!
Really like this series, glad to see it continuing.
Yesssss I've been waiting for this for so long
Hey, haven’t seen this video yet, just wanted to say your content is insane, I really enjoyed your videos on power creep and the game boy game!
Love your Pokémon cameo tcg series ❤
this stuff is so cool man keep it up!
This series is great keep em coming!
YEAH NEW UPLOAD LETS GOOO
WOO! Just rewatched the first two and now part 3!
DELTA SEEKER IS BACK YEEEAAA!!!!!!!
Awesome serie ! I love to see all the details of the cards
As a Shuckle collector too, and since there isn't much cards representing it, i'm looking for any card depecting it in the background too ! (The only one i now is Morpeko from Shining Fates)
Keep going 💪
Been organizing my childhood cards based off sets since it was something I never really realized when I was young... having fun breaking them down and checking off what I have in each one... these sets were a great surprise I want more!
Watching this series back to back, it is impressive how your video editing skills improved!
4:44 what a fun fact! Thanks
i really love your videos
Keep up the good work :)
Another based video
These videos are amazing! Super informative n fun. I'm curious: would you ever do a video going in depth about the clay style pokemon cards? Like if theyre all real, or some are renders? Idk it seems really interesting. (Ditto even had a whole series of them back in 2005)
The Magikarp are evolving on that card, while the logic you mention makes sense... over in asia we have the belief/myth about a carp that can over come a waterfall becoming a dragon...which is also why Magikarp's evolution, Gyrados looks like an asian dragon. ^^;
I LOVE E-SERIES!!!!!!!!
i love this series!!
NEW DELTASEEKER VIDEO LETS GO
I am now today years old to finally see those silhoutettes on that WotC black-star PROMO Team Rocket's Meowth.
I tell ya, these videos you've been doing are enough to make me wanna pull out my old collection again.
That Forest Guardian artstyle is pretty close to those of the Gamecube spinoffs Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
I absolutely love your videos! I've never played the TCG, only collecting the cards as a kid a bit and only sticking with the video games. I've gotten into Magic the Gathering in the last couple years so I'm happy to learn more about other card games, especially for an IP I love so much
You are the best !
Always looking forward to your videos, keep up the awesome work!!
great video:)
I think the pokemon on energy switch is actually Azumarill. the way its left ear is folded looks like it's long and thin, unlike Marill's round ears.
I would love a series where you went through all/many card artwork instead of just the cameos! Though that's obv a ton of work so I don't blame you if you don't
The legend is back!
I've never played the TCG for pokemon but I adore your channel, it's so fun to binge while doing stuff
I like how Pokemon Reversal's illustrator goes by "Big Mama" Tagawa
I only play the TCG via TPC's apps (TCG Online and the new TCG Live which is replacing Online soon) and every time I see a card with a cameo I think of this series lol
I love this deep dive into the Pokemon card artwork. You've highlighted a lot of cameos and facts about the cards that I never knew before. It's also always a joy to revisit older sets - I still think that Aquapolis and Skyridge have some of the most gorgeous art of all time and I wish it was possible for a set reprint to make them more accessible. Thank you for taking the time to make such great videos.
Love your videos dawg.
I just wish you hanged on your ending with links to others videos you've made, like previous episodes in the series.
As an Umbreon collector I HAD to get a copy of oracle when it was mentioned, great video!
Good video, I liked
This is a massive nostalgia hit, I really do have a love for early Pokemon that's hard to find anywhere else. The art is just beautiful.
Man if you don't mind increasing the volume of your videos. They get really hard to hear on my cell phone
yo dawg I just found your vids and I really enjoy them!!m hope to see more uploads soon!!
2:12 and 4:40 look like screenshots using Pokemon Stadium or Snap assets; if so it's interesting that the card still lists the creators as illustrators rather than photographer like the Pikachu Snap card
Super Nice, love this series!
Why do your videos abruptly end?
Babe wake up Deltaseeker uploaded another pokemon card cameos video
Lol that ending caught me off guard. Awesome as always tho cant wait to see more
Yeah, a real part 3 and not the bootleg version that I did when it looked like you gave up.
