Love this detail. I have had a zillion bobs give or take. Ha! I used to oppose layering, but my somewhat dense fine wavy hair needs it. It is bulkier in some spots more than others so if I don't get layers those heavy pieces take over.
The absolute best Bob I ever had was while I was stationed at West Point in NY. It was in the 80’s so not so long after the Sassoon cut craze. I remember it because 1 I Loved it and 2 because of the way he cut it. Wet hair, all completely slicked back to the nape then cut straight from one side to the other. It would swing perfectly plus add heavy cross the forehead bangs
I’ve been growing out a pixie, and have just reached the point where it’s all starting to look one length… but it’s resulted in a chin length bob, and I’ve been hating how it makes me look… now I understand why!! I have a round face shape, and so it’s accentuating that! Nothing I can really do until it grows, and I was never planning to keep it at this length, but still a fun “aha” moment!!
I'm so glad I could help! One option that would work, but you may or may not want to do depending on your long term hair goals, is you can layer it a bit to take the volume out of the sides and create a bit more on top. This can also add more length to the face. Another little trick is to flat iron (and give it little to no c shape or bend) on only the sides. Then round brush the top. This will lay the sides more flat and give more volume to the top, which will also help elongate the face.
After about 13 years of getting my hair cut the same between trims, growing it out and getting 7-14 inches off, I decided to try a bob, I made it very clear to the stylist that I was hesitant about longer in the front as a didn't want it to be a backwards mullet. I'm so glad I tried it because I really like it. Now after about 18 years I'm trying to grow my bangs out.. it's the worst...especially because I wear glasses.
My hairstylist in Michigan is awesome at Bob cuts. I have a chin length sharp cut so it has the swing, but I also have thin fine hair and he does a little texturing, so it doesn’t fall flat. His name is Roman, and the owner of P’La Salon in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Hello from Southern California! I actually like the look of straight blunt bob as long as theres soft beveled edge with blended layers to avoid "weighty " look and create mvmt/volume. Ahn Co Tran in Los Angeles is genius
@@selectiveoutrage6617He does, but those too are really pricey. Its not really revolutionary though. The ends are lightly textured (some use the term shattered ends), and he gives a soft undercut (for movement without lift).
I’ve had a slightly angled bob style for most of the last 10-15 years. The best trick for ease of styling and maintenance for me was when I got brave enough to do an undercut! Have you ever done a video on this? If not I would love to see one. My hair is thick and wavy especially at the nape of my neck and that hair seems to grow or show growth more quickly. Having an undercut makes my blowouts so much easier and the cut lays and shapes so much better. All I need is a few swipes in front and on sides with a flat iron and I’m good to go. I got the inspiration from Instagramer, Jocelyn McClellan.
I have thick wavy hair as well and a similar bob with an undercut....blowouts/styling are now so quick and easy! I don't know if I will ever go back to long hair:)
I'm from the Houston area but I really like my stylist so I won't change. I talk to her about everything you are telling us and she agrees with you. I've been growing out a super short pixie for 8 months and can't wait to have mine cut into a bob.
I’m so lucky in that I often have complete strangers tell me how much they like my bob. I’m always sure to thank them (once I’m over my surprise - I’m 75!) and tell my wonderful hair dresser how many compliments I receive.

What about folks who live in small town USA🙄 The number one reason I cut my own hair......because it is almost impossible to find someone capable of cutting hair like this.
I moved from a big city to a small town. Three failed bob haircuts later, I've decided to trek the 3-hour drive to my former stylist, who can cut a good bob like Justin describes here. I found that hair cutters here in the small town TALK like they will do what I describe, but absolutely do NOT have the skill to actually execute the haircut. I'm done with it. Running back to my big-city stylist ASAP. Also, I saw a woman at my workplace who has a really great precision cut and asked her where she goes. She said she drives 4 hours to a stylist who can do her cut, and that she could not find someone here who could do it. So, yeah, it's hard to get a good cut in a small town. The vast majority of women here have all-one-length, mid-back length hair ... and that is exactly how they cut my bob, no matter what they SAY they will do.
You are absolutely right, they don’t know how to separate hair into zones, how to prep hair and then how to do a precision scissor cut, they use raisers or even worse clippers🤦🏻♀️ I’m yet to find a good pair of hands! No luck so far.. Richmond, VA!

Great question. Depends on your hairline as well. If you have a higher hairline, sometimes you can elongate the neck by taking the length up shorter, closer to the neckline. But, if your hairline is lower, having the length longer will hide the neck.
I have been to so many salons who dont know these concepts. How do I ensure they actually know what they are doing. My last hair cut was the worst I have ever had. The stylist ensured me she knew exactly what i wanted. She didnt!
Many times I will bring pictures tell them how I find it thin around my ear, explain the length I need (full face), and how short hair makes me look fat, explain that I want the angle to follow my jawline…..blah, blah , blah is what they hear, and I end up crying on my way home!

Great video. Gosh, who would have thought bobs could be so complex. I have naturally curly but thin hair that never sits flat even when ironed to death. A few years ago I wanted a long blunt cut bob but ended up with a chin length angled graduated bob which the stylist insisted on doing. Not a good look and a complete mare to style 😩

How do I ask for that method of cutting that is opposite of the undercut. I want my bob to flip, naturally, but especially if I style a flip. I have natural wave and I do not like the undercut in the least. Years ago, a good hairdresser asked me if I wanted it undercut or _____cut. Is it even possible to have a strong line, in order to feign thickness, while also having layers for movement and volume? I have an oblong oval face and very fine , stick straight hair -- much less of it than I used to have. I watched this, currently have a somewhat boxy bob with bangs -- I need bangs -- but I hate the side view. No A frame here, managed to grow that disaster out after a long time beloved stylist HACKED IT in order to cut out the orange she created when she tried to lighten my base. With bleach, no toner, and without doing a strand test 🤪. Just looking for a general answer, I realize I am not featured as a makeover here -- I'd like to know what I can tell my new stylist. I’m growing out my pixie to a potential layered bob style. Right now my sides are mid ear. I look like a mushroom top. 😂😂 Whenever I hit this stage my stylist gets a 911 call from me for a pixie cut. I’m powering through it this time.
I'm doing the same thing and my hair is now just past my ears. I've using bobby pins and headbands to keep it out of my face and it's driving me crazy 😂

Mine grew out during lockdown and cos l could n't go to the hairdressers l just kept trimming the layers all one length as they grew. By the time salons were open l hadxa chin length bob with a fringe ( bangs) and hairdresser keeps trimming now!! Got to say l love a bob. Mine looks a bit like Anna Wintour's (, if it's good enough for her!!!!!).
Angle is not good for many especially with wavy and abundant hair and a small face. It becomes too bulky and messy around the face and neck. That is the talent ..do the necessary texture and layers. If not done right, it destroys the haircut. Also impossible to pull it back if we need to. Can you talk about the length around the face both on top or sides for wavy and abundant hair? Most of your models have straight hair . Thanks
You didn’t mention having a fringe, or not. Sometimes a fringed bob can look really cool or on some people it can make them look frumpy and not suit their face shape (or hair) at all

At 4:18 and 4:19 there are too bobs that have more layering in the back but still angled. Would this work on almost 50 year old with thinning hair and round face? Looking for perfect cut for sons wedding in 1 week. Thanks and love your videos

I moved from a big city to a small town. Three failed bob haircuts later, I've decided to trek the 3-hour drive to my former stylist, who can cut a good bob like Justin describes here. I found that hair cutters here in the small town TALK like they will do what I describe, but absolutely do NOT have the skill to actually execute the haircut. I'm done with it. Running back to my big-city stylist ASAP. Also, I saw a woman at my workplace who has a really great precision cut and asked her where she goes. She said she drives 4 hours to a stylist who can do her cut, and that she could not find someone here who could do it. So, yeah, it's hard to get a good cut in a small town. The vast majority of women here have all-one-length, mid-back length hair ... and that is exactly how they cut my bob, no matter what they SAY they will do.

You are absolutely right, they don’t know how to separate hair into zones, how to prep hair and then how to do a precision scissor cut, they use raisers or even worse clippers🤦🏻♀️ I’m yet to find a good pair of hands! No luck so far.. Richmond, VA!

Destroyed my hair. Don't they learn "layering". Not feathering......layering. I haven't had a good hair cut in years.....maybe 10.

Great question. Depends on your hairline as well. If you have a higher hairline, sometimes you can elongate the neck by taking the length up shorter, closer to the neckline. But, if your hairline is lower, having the length longer will hide the neck.

I have been to so many salons who dont know these concepts. How do I ensure they actually know what they are doing. My last hair cut was the worst I have ever had. The stylist ensured me she knew exactly what i wanted. She didnt!
Many times I will bring pictures tell them how I find it thin around my ear, explain the length I need (full face), and how short hair makes me look fat, explain that I want the angle to follow my jawline…..blah, blah , blah is what they hear, and I end up crying on my way home!
I know this feeling well. It's like the more pictures I bring the LESS they see.

Great video. Gosh, who would have thought bobs could be so complex. I have naturally curly but thin hair that never sits flat even when ironed to death. A few years ago I wanted a long blunt cut bob but ended up with a chin length angled graduated bob which the stylist insisted on doing. Not a good look and a complete mare to style 😩

How do I ask for that method of cutting that is opposite of the undercut. I want my bob to flip, naturally, but especially if I style a flip. I have natural wave and I do not like the undercut in the least. Years ago, a good hairdresser asked me if I wanted it undercut or _____cut. Is it even possible to have a strong line, in order to feign thickness, while also having layers for movement and volume? I have an oblong oval face and very fine , stick straight hair -- much less of it than I used to have. I watched this, currently have a somewhat boxy bob with bangs -- I need bangs -- but I hate the side view. No A frame here, managed to grow that disaster out after a long time beloved stylist HACKED IT in order to cut out the orange she created when she tried to lighten my base. With bleach, no toner, and without doing a strand test 🤪. Just looking for a general answer, I realize I am not featured as a makeover here -- I'd like to know what I can tell my new stylist. She is very good and very open to feedback. My old one wasn't. Thanks!

My question; I’m 63 long hair I’m wanting a Bob cut and have a great stylist, but I want the longer Bob because I do not want the front portions pointing at my chin area. I have a heart shaped face, and I don’t have a full face. Mine grew out during lockdown and cos l could n't go to the hairdressers l just kept trimming the layers all one length as they grew. By the time salons were open l hadxa chin length bob with a fringe ( bangs) and hairdresser keeps trimming now!! Got to say l love a bob. Mine looks a bit like Anna Wintour's (, if it's good enough for her!!!!!).
Angle is not good for many especially with wavy and abundant hair and a small face. It becomes too bulky and messy around the face and neck. That is the talent ..do the necessary texture and layers. If not done right, it destroys the haircut.
Also impossible to pull it back if we need to. Can you talk about the length around the face both on top or sides for wavy and abundant hair?

You didn’t mention having a fringe, or not. Sometimes a fringed bob can look really cool or on some people it can make them look frumpy and not suit their face shape (or hair) at all
