Man, the ferries in Europe are really something else. They're more like cruise ships that just happen to have a couple of their lower decks given over to cars and trucks. There's nothing in America that really compares that I can think of. The Seattle - Alaska ferries would be the closest equivelent, but they are dwarfed by the size of the European ferries.
Ferries were quite popular because they could sell alcohol, tobacco and fragrances taxfree, but after the Soviet Union collapsed people were able to buy those products much cheaper from Estonia and Latvia. Nowadays ferries are mainly partying place for students, weekend cruises for families, seminar events etc, but most importantly affordable and easy way to travel to Estonia and Latvia and bring huge amounts of cheap alcohol to Finland ;) For some reason biggest Finnish ferry companies are able to negotiate big government subsidies every year, I don't know if they would survive without those. Maybe the profit margins are too thin...
One thing the US does not really have a lot of beyond a little on the east coast or BC to Victoria Island. Your ferries in Europe are definitely grand and a statement of the culture over there.
