    They had a green 11.5 Superduty on sale for the 4th and I hesitated and missed out, it was half price! I already have one and that’s why I hesitated, but it absolutely wouldn’t have hurt to have another! I’m super mad at myself!

    On PA’s website it says the barrels are 4140 instead of 4150, was surprised by that, Geissele seems to be do great job across the board with their material choices with the barrel steel being the exception. Seems to a be a cost cutting option when you compare their barrels to BCM or centurion which is a shame since I really think they nailed the profile and they have in house forges which in my mind means quality barrel shortages should be over, no more 9-10 months of waiting for something to come back in stock.
    Before anyone comments “it’s chrome lined, it doesn’t matter!” 4150 is a stronger steel that retains its strength with heat, it just deals with heat better in general.

      Considering the G SD just did 900 CONSECUTIVE rounds full auto (youtube search it) before the gas tube ruptured, I think the barrel is probably fine. The DD 14.5 gov profile failed below 700 in the barrel.

      As a pure materials thing in a vacuum I'd agree. I learened a bit about CrMo alloys when I went to a CrMo brazing school and spent time brazing different CrMo tubes on my own thereafter. For bicycle frames. Things like on-paper materials differences are not always the same in application. When the measurable differences (rigidity/flexion, hardness/malleability, deformation at temperature) are in play, of course they matter. I'm saying perhaps the hammer forging process, if designed around 4140, may offset some of the on-paper material differences. It's about application, not on-paper.
      Also important to bear in mind is this factor about any mechanical gear that has multiple levels of application. Many sports equipment (i.e. alpine skis, mountain bikes, off-road motos) have users that range from rank newbie know-nothing to Expert level users who use the gear for money/work. The great majority of users will be much closer to the newbie know-nothing level, and so the gear is designed in many cases for at best an "average" user. Not the extreme case user.
      Not saying Geissele would intentionally under-build something. Just saying that user realities are always in play. Since they do govcontract mfre, and lots of mfre for more serious shooters otherwise (competitors), their user group is a bit more demanding and expects a bit more. Which contrasts to a newbie buying Geissele because of the reputation. Making such equipment (at Geissele's end of things) requires balancing the demands/needs of the overall user group.

    I used to love G, but have since had a change of heart. I had an 11.5 SD shit the bed when the ejector roll pin walked, which mangled the feed ramps and cause peening of the bolt ejector roll pin hole. I replaced it with an 11.5 URGI which had jacked up feed ramps, an off center gas tube hole, and a short chamber which absolutely mangled brass and deformed projectiles. So now I’m back to Colt & Centurion Arms.

    Good to see you back! I hope all is well with you. I've got the 11.5" Super Duty. Definitely a bit pricey, but it's great. It's second only to the 11.5" I built using a Criterion Core barrel, ADM's ambi receiver set, FCD handguard, a Sionics NP3 BCG, and a LaRue MBT-2S. I absolutely love that gun. The Core barrel is awesome and the ambi controls on the ADM lower are fantastic. But the 11.5" Super Duty is really great too, especially if ambi controls aren't a concern. Geissele's lower parts feel really nice as is. Yeah, I swapped out the grip immediately for a Magpul K2. A2 style grips are awful. The REBCG is fantastic!

    Dear Mr Squid. Your Hero here, Marine Infantry 👋. OOORAH!!! KILL!!! Anyway. I believe that Bill Geissele has put together one of the best rifles on the market. I love his parts kits. And triggers. My favorite being the Tricon. I figured that one out. It's for old school Navy boiler techs, RP's and Rob O'Neil that have weak fingerbang game. But also works equally well for motivated killers such as Marines, Boatswain Mates and Green Side Corpsmen. I like that trigger shoe.
    If I were to suggest a one and done. It would be a Geissele Super Duty. You are right. For what you get. By the time you buy all the crap that the Geissele rifles come with. You are in it for the same price. Or more. The only thing I'm not really into is the Super 42 setup. Much bigger fan of the A5 system. In particular the New BCM Mk2. But I digress. I have a friend that has two 16" Geissele Super Duty's. Both setup the same, we train when we can. He's running gen 3 Razors on Geissele mounts.
    I'm also a fan of the maritime bolt catch and the ambi saftey. Because I shoot with the Devils hand.
    The only other rifle that I think is as value driven is a BCM with all the Mk2 improvements. I believe there are several companies that has solved the bolt stress issue. SOLGW, Sionics and Jim Hodge (Those guys all run in the same circles.) all run a M4 upper that's a thicker cut from Cerro. Weighs I believe a ounce more. When they removed the carry handle off of the A2 upper. They removed a lot of rigidity. BCM has the Mk2 with a better forward assist location and rigidity with no weight penalties. Vltor has the MUR. That's heavier than the aforementioned. And gives you a higher shelf. The competition guys love the MUR.
    BCM has stated they have seen bolt life drastically improve.
    Companies like Geissele, LWRC and LMT have improved the overall bolt design. At a much higher cost.
    We live in good times for blasters my man. And optics.

    It makes sense to me. If you want to go beyond a basic AR and want a "buy it for life" go to war gun that you won't dream about changing anything on excepting perhaps very personal things like the grip or butt, here you are. It's expensive, but so is home building to this level. May as well let them do it for you and reap small savings from their production volume. Glad to hear they upped the ante on the barrel finish, though.
    Could you have an excellent lifetime GtW rifle made with less expensive components? Absolutely. I tried to do that with my rifle and I enjoy it very much. This is for when you want to go the extra mile with the details, as Navy explained.
    Speaking of details, how do you oil your barrel? I wiped my phosphated barrel with an oiled rag when I assembled it but now with the MCMR handguard I'll be spraying oil through the gaps and blasting the excess off with my air compressor.
    Ps: As hinted above, I finished my 20" rifle and let me tell you, I studied both of your 20" videos a ton in the planning phase. As in, multiple rewatches over time with a paper and pen to hand. I also took into consideration a lot of other points that you mentioned in various videos (and points made by other youtubers). The bottom line is that I'm in your debt. I finally built /my/ fighting rifle and I love everything about it. I'm excited to learn and grow with it and there isn't anything I want to change. At the moment I'm just debating whether I'll keep the rear and front handbrake combo on it or just run the front one (which isn't moving). Thank you, and if you're interested, I can send a video breaking down the build via youtube.

      If you are careful about parts selection you can build a very accurate, very reliable rifle for less than the cost of a Geissele complete. Most people, though, are not mechanically minded enough to understand the parts selection matrix and more importantly the system understanding -- how it all works together. Most people don't want to tune their gas system or their buffer weight/buffer spring weight, they want turnkey reliability. For those folks a Geissele complete is a smart deal. No time spent parts picking, no time spent assembling, no distractions. Just get the rifle & go shoot.

Then, after waiting for over 3 months to get them, I used my stack of 35% off coupons to buy an 11.5" "pistol" once they launched, as well as a ton of other parts and accessories for my family and friends so they could "Geissele all the things." It turned out to be a pretty "Super" deal, especially now that they're selling for twice what I paid for mine, and that's without a $150 Surefire muzzle device included. I prefer the BCM Gunfighter pistol grip. I love the B5 stock. Looking at you Daniel Defense, lol.
    The 14.5 setup will make head shots at 384 yds all day long with AAC 77 Sierras and its EoTech and G45 magnifier. Wish I had a range to shoot further.
    Ever since I ran across the Super Select Fire trigger during the GWOT, I was sold on Geissele’s triggers and ran the SSA exclusively until I got three Super Duty firearms.

      If you read a bit about gas system management you may find that tube length affects dwell time, in addition to recoil impulse force. I don't understand the rifle's gas system and combustion event well enough to say what the dwell time effects are, I just have observed that people discuss the matter of dwell time and efficient combustion when talking gas systems. And that both aspects affect not only recoil impulse, but also accuracy & velocity. Not suggesting "big effects" but rather that they are variables in the mix.

    Have the exact same upper, it's great. Kind of annoying to see that they stopped including the Surefire muzzle devices and kept at the same price (IIRC). It also sucks that they use that anti-rotation tab in the upper receiver instead of the standard mk16 rail.

    • @navyman8903

      @@navyman8903 I swapped out the original rail for a mk14 so I just had the mk16* orphaned for a while sitting in a box until I put together another upper. Nobody's going to want to buy the mk16* it since it will only work with those receivers. (edit: Also annoying that there's no Geissele engraving on the rail. Just seems like they were being cheap by skipping it)
      It's a decent system for anti rotation but its still not perfect, it's not an alignment tab with how much clearance there is in the fit. Can get just as good of an alignment running a fingernail on both sides of the receiver seam.

      @@pouuko7656 "Supply chain." Really no excuse to stop offering the SF devices, since you could still offer them in whatever quantity you are able, and then sell a cheaper version of the rifle with the Geissele flash hider.
      The reason they didn't do this is probably because the real goal is to creep their prices upward to match inflation and this is a more effective strategy for that. They can keep the price of the rifle the same while saving money producing them and most people wont know any different. Then later they can offer the SF muzzle devices (and/or other brands) again and upcharge for them.

    Thanks for the great reviews of Geissele. I've been watching all your videos and because of you I recently purchased a 16" Geissele super duty and love it. Like you said in your review, the qd slots now have the steel inserts. I did receive a Geissele flash hider, nanocoated, but heard they were going to change to giving you the option of what kind you wanted to have in the future, so you could install a can if thats the route you wanted to go. I guess a drop down menu of some sort to choose the muzzle device they are offering. Cool idea if it actually pans out. I did receive a new Geissele grip. Its very textured and believe its either a 19° or 21°. Its definitely a lot nicer than the previous one. I actually bought two grips with my rifle because I thought I was going to have to change it out when I got it. Evidently that wasn't the case. I'll probably just keep the grip it came with on it, its that good. Lastly, I bought mine through Brownell's at a very good price , I think. Especially in today's market. I paid $1759 and was able to use a 10% discount code from Tactical Advisors channel which was "TA10". Basically paid for the tax, which was nice. With the two grips and the rifle it was $1776.00 out the door. I also got the luna black rifle to save money. I wanted the desert dirt color, but couldn't justify the extra $ 200 bucks for it....especially when they make some great camo paint. Not sure I can stomach that route though. Something doesn't seem right about paying that much for a rifle and then throwing a $20 dollar spray paint on it. Anyways, just wanted to thank you for supplying the great reviews! Please keep it up. I like how you set up your videos and how detailed they are. Kinda like Nutnfacy's old reviews, which I enjoy and have to admit I miss how often he use to do them. I'm not huge on the 13.7 unless you SBR it. Having the 14.5 just makes more sense. Some dudes want to drop dead on 16 inches exactly. But the 14.5 is flushed out perfectly fine, and will give you more velocity. So I don't see a need to go below 14.5. Especially if you're shooting past 400 yards. You'll want every bit of velocity you can squeeze out of your rifle.

      I have a video comparing them, honestly they're very close. If you don't want to build a rifle, this is the move. The URGI has done me very well also. It's splitting hairs. But a fully assembled rifle, the SD is well equipped and the trigger is awesome. The new URGIs have the same REBGC.

    I unfortunately have a BO barrel on my 14.5 . Never oiled it . I want to see if anything ever happens. No issues so far . I’ll just spray paint it if I ever do. I have a few G uppers . They all run great. Upper/lower fit is def sloppy

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  10 місяців тому +1

      I don't think it's a short term issue, probably a 2-3 year no love issue. IF it's not oiled then it CAN rust, but probably won't if it's periodically maintenance.

    I got a blemula version and love mine. Don’t quite have as many rounds down range you do.
    Curious though, have you bore scoped the barrel by chance? I have the opportunity and scoped mine and with only roughly 100 rounds through it I have some gas port erosion already. Wasn’t sure if you have the same.
    My ballistic advantage and Rosco barrels don’t have that erosion with more rounds.

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  6 місяців тому

      I haven't scoped it yet, but I can look into it. Can you define some? And were are you seeing it? Muzzle side or towards the breach?

    • @Airborne08
      @Airborne08 6 місяців тому

      it's right at the gas hole towards the breach. My boss has several that show little to no erosion after several hundred rounds through various barrels and I have a few with some rounds down range with no erosion visible. It hasn't effected accuracy but just trying to see if you might have the similar wear since you have even more rounds through yours.
