  • We love our backyard chickens so much, we had to get more!!! We take you from the arrival of our baby chicks from My Pet Chicken to their adoption later that night by our broody hen, Cersei. (Yes, She was named after the character from Game of Thrones) We also share how we house our Broody hen without a separate coop. This video may be especially helpful if you have BYCs in your actual back yard, and not a farm or homestead.

    Oh that's so sweet... I have been thinking about doing this as well I have a broody buff orpington that just won't give in. So happy to see this is possible.. hope I can find a couple silkies.. My pet silkie passed away from old age last fall..She was like a little lap dog. Hope momma and babies are all well.

      Yeah, my Orpington would get broody at the drop of a hat. Sadly, I always had to break her of it by placing a small cold pack under her, because she was a mean broody and it stressed out our small flock. I knew as soon as I set the wooden eggs out, her hormones would kick in. And they did immediately. I’m so sorry for your loss. 💕This was our first Silkie, and I adore them. Good luck on your search for silkies. I’m sure you will find the ones that are meant for you. 😊

    Nice job. I’m am trying to do the same thing with my broody chicken. Hope mine goes as well. I also ordered from my pet chicken this time but my chicks aren’t here yet.

      Good luck! My buff used to get broody easily. When I was about 3 weeks out from the chicks arriving, I set out the wooden eggs and she immediately sat on them and stayed there until I put the chicks under her. She was so dedicated, I had to remove her once a day to make sure she got food and water because she wouldn’t move. Moving the broody from the nest once a day (if they are not doing it in their own) also helps to prevent vent gleet in the hot weather.

    Thank you for sharing this video, it’s exactly what I was wondering! One question, where did you order your chicks from? I have never even considered that!

      We got our chickens from
      www.mypetchicken.com
      In the city I live in, we don’t have feed stores where you can purchase baby chicks. We wanted a small number to start and certain breeds that tend to be more docile (so my daughter could be help with them). Most mail order companies require a larger purchase than we were comfortable with. My pet chicken is pricier, but checked all the boxes. Most of the cost is the shipping. They were shipped out at a day old and arrived at the post office the next morning.

    Either the hen mother would adopt the chicks at day light or not, you have not mentioned

      At 4.10, It’s says Cersei accepted the chics. So, yes, she did adopt them all. 😊

    I'm new at this... You probably don't want to try this if mamma is hatching her last chick . I don't think you should , but thought I should ask you. Thanx

      To be honest, I have no experience with hens hatching their own eggs. We live in a city that does not allow roosters. This video showed how we introduced day old chicks to a hen we had that was already Broody within a closed flock. We had her sit on wooden eggs for 4 weeks and then introduced them.

      @@theradiantroost I see... I live on a small homestead. When we moved here, before starting to raise chickens, I found a wooden egg in the barn. I was told that was what they used them for... I didn't know that. We didn't need it, so I cleaned it up and varnished it. Put it in my hutch with my real Ostrich eggs... Lol

      That’s great! Some people have luck with that. I’ve known some who haven’t, especially where there are only a few chickens. It all depends on the chicken.

    Ok Dumb question. Can Chickens crossbreed? Can a Buff Orrington with a Domino chicken?

    • @theradiantroost
      @theradiantroost  2 роки тому

      There are no dumb questions. The short answer is yes. Generally speaking, a rooster will want to mate with ALL of your hens. You may want to consider if the breeds are compatible in a mixed flock. Some breeds are very docile and some can be quite aggressive.

    I have a broody aseel hen and she only have 4 chicks for now, aseels are known for being aggressive and we'll caring mother hens, but they can be brutal too, I afraid she would peck them to death if I put chicks under her. How can I prevent it?

    • @theradiantroost
      @theradiantroost  3 роки тому +2

      I don’t know of a sure-fire way. I’m not familiar with that particular breed, but I have found that chickens really do develop individual personalities. Assessments should be done on a case by case basis. Knowing that hen’s personality will help. It’s best to use chicks that are 5 day-old or less, the younger the better. The chicks in this video were 1 day old. I introduce the chicks in the evening, because that’s when the hens are more relaxed. When you add the chicks, place them under her from behind, not in front of her. She should be sitting on eggs for at least a week, preferably longer. If she has hatched chicks already and is not sitting on eggs, it will be harder. Not only will she have to accept them, but the other chicks will, too. If the hen exhibits any sign of pecking, remove them immediately.

    I’m learning how to do this. Do you keep the mother chicken in the whole time or let her out to eat drink and poo? Would the chicks get cold if they aren’t with her? I assume the baby chicks stay inside the dog crate for few weeks until they are bigger. How much tending does this require from you like your daily tasks? Would the mother eat all the baby chicks food? Thanks

      There are many ways to do this. What worked for us is that I would put mama and chicks outside together in a large pop-up puppy playpen I got from Amazon, first thing ( with the food and water available for the chicks). This would give me the time and room to clean out the crate and do all my other chicken chores while mama taught the little ones how to dig and scratch outside. When I was done with everything, I would put them all back. All of this added no more than 15 minutes to my morning tasks. Eventually, I added an afternoon outing. Yes, the chicks stay in the crate until they are older. At first, I had to add some cardboard from old boxes around the perimeter of the crate to keep the chicks from slipping out. Netting or hardware cloth would work, too. I made sure to leave plenty of chicken starter for mama and babies, making sure mama had access to extra oyster shell. The extra protein helped her gain her strength back. Eventually, when the chicks got older and too big and active for the crate I set up an area in the run that was netted off from the older chickens so they could be protected and get used to one another. Integrating the chicks later did require more time and attention. Good luck!
