I Bought a $2,500 lawn mower for Testing Purposes

  • It's all about the REEL MOWERS in this video.
In this video, I go over why I bought yet another lawn mower and compare it to my past reel mowers.
Ultimately I decided to purchase an Allet Kensington 17H for two major reasons:
1st: It is much more maneuverable than my previous Toro Greensmaster 1000. My front lawn is only 1500 total square feet and mowing every other day with a 300 pound commercial piece of equipment was not fun.
2nd: I want a reel mower that had a cartridge system so I could remove the reel, send it in for sharpening and have it sent back to me. It was always a hassle to have my Greensmaster sharpened and always took a few weeks to get it back from the shop so the convenience of sending in the reel was a major factor in my purchasing decision.
Here are a few specs on the Kensington 17H:
    Self propelled
Cartridge system including optional 10 blade cylinder, aerator, brush, verticut, dethatcher and scarifier
    Honda GX120 Engine
    17” cutting width
    Six-blade cylinder cartridge included
    grassbox
    ¼“ to 1 ¼” Height of cut
    Adjustable grass rake
    Steel front roller
Double section steel rear roller with differential
3 handlebar height positions plus folding for storage
Overall I enjoyed my first cut and will be doing a full review once I have had enough time with it so stay tuned!

🔴1 YEAR UPDATE: I SOLD THE ALLETT.
Over the past year... The plastic lever that engages the reel has been giving me nothing but problems so I sold it.
For the price of this mower, i did not expect such cheap quality.
I just bought a new mower to test this year, see here: ua-cam.com/video/xg0K_zLk934/v-deo.html

Works great! ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

I started watching this guy's channel and I must confess I judged him for recommending scott's products. But I'm about 15 videos in and George does his research. He knows his stuff and is one of the best at making lawn care accessible to EVERYONE. All I can say is I'm taking notes on how to introduce others to the joys of lawn care without becoming elitist. Awesome, authentic, real, and accessible. Thanks, George!

Trying to achieve a golf course, ball field type lawn with a zero turn is near impossible unless you have a perfectly flat lawn and accept that you need to mow at 2” at least.
I run a 42” mower, I cut about 2.5” right now all year minus the first couple mows after winter. When I’m over seeding and germinating that grass. I’m hoping by the end of next spring my lawn is going to incredible for what it is - a large and uneven lawn. This year I’ve been focusing on leveling out holes and dips, making mowing around obstacles easier, and defining spaces where grass grows, and where it’s not going to. I’ve got multiple trailers, vehicles etc that I’m always moving around so I built a carport and moved my driveway to the other side of the house to consolidate everything. Now I need to fix my original “driveway” which was just worn down grass that had some crushed granite on it.
Also putting a walkway from the new driveway to the front door. The new driveway has blue limestone 3/4” on it now, and I’ll likely form it up and have it poured before next summer. For now it’s just raked out and bordered with steel.

Also, because of YOU, I’m realizing what a failure I am with lawn care. Not only do I cut my property but I maintain 2 widow ladies properties who are neighbors. No money involved. They are both really sweet. The lawns are a cluster of Poa annua clover and various grasses. When fall approaches I would love to have your recommendations on improving this hot mess. We all don’t need golf course lawns but I’m so tired of the summer crap hole it all becomes. Since it’s all on my dime it has to be practical and mainstream. I need to make improvements by next spring. Each of the 3 properties has about the same square footage as you. Thanks for all your kindness and hope you and yours have a great summer.

My first reel was a 20” used Craftsman purchased used in 2000. Traded up to a used 25” McLane five years ago. I’m able to easily back lap it myself. Last season I splurged on the Kensington 20H because of the additional cartridges and there utility. Still used the McLane when I’m short on time. Save my commercial Honda rotary for use in early spring when scalping. Each serves a specific purpose but the Allett has become my favorite.

I know they have a similar build as the mclane and it is very easy to manuever.
Do you have a cal trimmer?

    • @hottroddchevelle
      @hottroddchevelle 3 роки тому +1

Yes I presently have one although my lawn is not in a condition to use it yet. I kind of fix up older machines as a hobby so I’ve had quite a few cal trimmers over the years but I recently moved and my yard is still in pretty bad and bumpy shape. Reel mowing isn’t too popular in these parts nowadays, mostly just in high end wealthy neighborhoods but back in the 80s and 90s it was a lot more common for the average homeowner. That’s probably why they can be found pretty cheap on Craigslist or other ads.

Funny you mentioned that, I bought my mclane used from an older lady in one of the fanciest areas of Chicago, actually in highland park where MJs house is.
She told me the same thing… it was big back in the day.
That’s cool you work on small engines, I always have fun tinkering with my equipment, big reason a stayed gas and didn’t get the electric version!

Hi George, this is great timing for me as I'm researching prosumer vs greens mower. Was your Toro an 18"? Did that have the split drum also? Right now I'm using a SunJoe electric which I modded with a front roller to eliminate scalping. I do like that it's super light and maneuverable

    • @PrincessCutLawnCare
      @PrincessCutLawnCare  3 роки тому +1

Hi jason, the gm was 21 inchs, it did have a split drum BUT it was tight and not nearly as maneuverable then this one. Granted it was an 89 so i cant speak for the newer ones..
If your looking for a maneuverable machine then i would def stay away from a greens mower, its like riding a bull when mowing your lawn lol
The absolute most agile gas reel mowers would be the mclane and cal trimmers if you can find ppl the sharpen them.
After that, next would be the allet

You have been knocking out some fab content this year, nice to see your channel grow :) I'm on the other side of the pond in Northern Ireland.
I really like the allet, but think you have downgraded from the toro. Not knocking you, I know you have your reasons... There is no way the quality of the cut will be the same.
Though the allet shines with the cartridges system. Once you do a comparison video of the swordman and the allet, that would make a great video as there is a lot of people who would be interested in that. I could see me giving that a share on my channel. Anyway all the best and good luck with your new mower, shiny new tools are always great :)

And you're absolutely right! nothing compares to the cut of the greens mowers, i see you have a JDGreens Mower as well! Awesome!
I can already tell the cut is nowhere near as tight as the GM but it is def much easier to handle on my little lawn which is motivating me to more more often than usual:)
Also we are in the works of the allet vs swardman video now so be on the lookout, can't wait to see how they perform head to head.
