This is one of those uploads that I watch, and gets me all emotional. I arrived in West Berlin 1988. And I was sad to leave in 1991.
I love the way you have imprinted the names of each site on the video. That’s such a fantastic idea. I remember places like the stadt hotel. There was a cocktail bar in there, where we would enjoy socialising. The Maifeld where we performed the Queens Birthday Parade every year. As time goes by, and I get older, these types of videos bring a lump to my throat. As my Italian friend always say. This is our Berlin. It’s how we remember her.

Verstehe auch nicht warum man erst in den 90ern angefangen hat die Kriegslöcher (vom Gelände im Todesstreifen abgesehen) endgültig zu stopfen. Deutsche Teilung hin oder her, die hatten 45 Jahre Zeit und die Stadt sah nach der Wende vor allem in West-Berlin teils immer noch so aus als wäre der zweite Weltkrieg gerade mal 10 Jahre her 🤔
@@12Wackelpudding Das liegt wahrscheinlich an der Isolation West-Berlins. Ich finde es eigentlich schon bemerkenswert, dass sich diese Stadt nach so vielen Zerstörungen, Teilungen, Isolation, etc. immer wieder erholt hat. Berlin (West) lag ja vollständig von feindlichen Gebiet umgeben und war buchstäblich eingemauert. Hingelangen konnte man nur über 3 Korridorautobahnen, eine Handvoll Bahnstrecken oder Flugzeuge der Allierten. Daher finde ich die Entwicklung West-Berlins schon recht bemerkenswert.
@@MS-un8hg Nicht nur Berlin, sondern Deutschland im Allgemein hat diese Superpower, sich nach jeder Zerstörung stärker als vorher zu erholen. Klar Berlin bzw. das Gebiet der ehemaligen DDR haben noch viel zu tun, mit dem Rest der Bundesrepublik aufzuholen, aber der Abstand ist mit der Zeit immer kleiner geworden, und einige ostdeutsche Gebiete sehen heutzutage sogar durchaus besser aus als manche westdeutsche Städte. Ich komme aus Vietnam, einem Land, das für 21 Jahre geteilt und seit 44 Jahren wiedervereinigt wurde, aber trotzdem ist die "Mauer im Kopf" der Menschen im Norden und Süden bei uns immer noch spürbar, also denke ich, dass Deutschland schon eine gute Arbeit geleistet hat, die zwei Teile zusammenzubringen.

Agree, unfortunately, there is so little left of the pre-war Berlin's beauty. Newly build houses and offices are looking alike and were build without good taste. The senseless aerial bombings of many beautiful cities like Dresden, Cologne ... Berlin left them in ruins from which they were never able to recover. Those cities are now organically fragmented, flickered and with broken historical continuity. Even 70 years after the war, visitors can not ignore the feelings of despair and sadness for the past destruction which is still visible today.

Sieht von oben besser aus, als es unten war. Ich war ein halbes Jahr davor auf Klassenfahrt und erinnere mich, dass das Gebiet um den Potsdamer Platz aussah wie nach dem Krieg. Da standen noch zerbombde Ruinen.
NATO-Terroristen, wie konnten sie so schöne Städte bombardieren, in denen die Menschen friedlich lebten????

@@redutze9137 Ich Wohne am nördlichen Rand Berlins und kann versichern, dass auch in den Rändern (Süden und Osten war ich bereits, nur im Westen kaum) die meisten dunkel tragen.

Only visited Berlin for the first time recently but I never realised how empty the area surrounding the Brandenburger gate was before the fall of the wall. It sure has changed.
Totally agree. I was there three weeks ago and am blown away by the level of development there. We stayed at a hotel near Alexanderplatz and noted the “Berlin Stadt Hotel” has been taken over by a US chain.
Berlin had suffered a decline from 1939 to 1989. 30 years have passed since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and it will be another 20 years before all the scars of these 50 years of decline have healed. The city is on a good way, but there is still a lot to do. Above all, I am thinking of the reconstruction of Berlin's Old Town between the Palace and Alexanderplatz, which is still an empty area.
Notice Potsdamerplatz, in the video you see an expansive empty grassy/muddy field with a few roads cutting through it. Now it's the location of most Berlin's tallest buildings. It's one of the major commercial hubs on Berlin now.

Entweder Sonntag oder damals tatsächlich weniger Autos.
Damals gab es viel weniger Autos. Und zudem viel weniger Einwohner. Die Stadt war bis in die 2000er ziemlich leer.

@@DerAachener Weil viel Industrie Berlins nach Süddeutschland abgehauen ist (Siemens, Lufthansa,Allianz etc), und damit die Jobs. Und im Osten fehlten zudem die Mittel für den Wiederaufbau, so dass es nur langsamer besser wurde. In den 80ern hatte Gesamt-Berlin rund 650.00 weniger Einwohner als heute (und 1,3 Millionen weniger Einwohner als vor dem 2. WK) - 1/3 haben Berlin verlasse . Und selbst 2000 waren es noch 300.000 weniger Menschen als heute.. also 10% weniger als jetzt, das merkt man schon. Hinzu kommen die Touristen.. mittlerweile sind permanent 100.000 Touris in Berlin (13,5 Mio, die im Schnitt 2,5 Tage bleiben)

Ich war 1991 30 Jahre alt. Manche mögen sagen, oh wie häßlich. Aber für mich war es Heimatstadt, und ich habe Tränen in den Augen, dass Berlin mir heute vorkommt, als hätte man mich 400 Jahre eingefroren und wieder aufgetaut. Fast alles weg, was ich in Kindheit und Jugend kannte. Allein um den Bereich Zoo hatten wir damals 20 Kinos. Alle weg bis auf eines. Und war es auch häßlich, war es doch unser! Diese sterline heutige Stadt, die ist mir fremd.
Berlin is amazing. It was cool back then and even better now, I think.

Bin 1994 nach Berlin gezogen und fand es immer klasse das im Osten nix los war.

Viel schöner als heute
I was in Berlin in March 2008. Cheap and very safe city. Lots of trees which was great to see.
It was a historical delight. The TV tower was the highlight along with the DDR museum.
East Germany had the nicest part of the city, East Berlin, they just didn't have the money to maintain and upgrade it.
Good one. The words "maintain" and "upgrade" do not exist in socialism. You should have seen East Berlin before 1989. The only color (besides red) that socialism knows is...grey. And grey was the most abundant color in the East.

Großartige Eindrücke. Ich kann nur wiederholen: Diese Runde nochmal, beides nebeneinander bzw. mit Überblendungen. Gerade diee Gegend um den Potsdamer Platz bzw. damaligen Lehrter Bahnhof haben sich ja extrem verändert.
Das ist echt so ein interessantes Video, so heftig wie sehr sich diese Stadt sich innerhalb 30 Jahre verändert hat. Es sieht auch noch alles so leer aus. Jetzt ist jede Straße voll! Und wie platt der Potsdamer Platz war. Bin froh dass es dieses Video gibt. Berlin hat mein Herz ❤️

Mir ist aufgefallen, wie viele Gebäude seit 91 neu gebaut wurden... Das Kanzleramt, die US Botschaft, Holocaust Mahnmal, Potsdamer platz, das Schloss, die Neubauten der museums Insel.... Früher war Berlin so viel ländlicher. So viele wiesen und Bäume. Also ich finds auch schön, wie es jetzt ist aber es fällt mir auf, wie rasant die Stadt in meiner Lebenszeit explodiert ist.
Thanks for the upload. 1991 was the last time I was in West Berlin. It'd kinda lost its edge for me. Great place to be in the 80's tho. Fond memories.

In Russland geboren, mit 3 Jahren mit Eltern nach Berlin umgezogen, kurz nach dem Mauerfall 1990. Seit dem bin ich in Berlin aufgewachsen und lebe in Berlin.
Von Berlin Hellersdorf und Marzahn, nach Mitte, gefolgt nach Grünewald-Zehlendorf, Lichtenberg-Steglitz, Dahlem-Steglitz und jetzt nach über 5 Jahren in England, bin ich nach Marzahn wieder umgezogen und lebe nun mehr als 4 Jahren.
Berlin hat sich sehr stark verändert, in den 30 Jahren.
Viel weniger Gewalt und somit auch weniger Probleme. Und nun das Gegenteil von damals.
Danke an die Führungskräften... Das es jetzt komplett anders geworden ist. (Nicht besser) aber ich hoffe es wird wieder viel besser.
Traumhaft! So viele grüne Flächen in Zentrum! Mittlerweile gibt es da nur Beton und an den meisten Straßen nicht mal Bäume. Friedrichstadt meine ich damit und dei Ecke rund ums Schweizer Botschaft.
Viel Grün im Zentrum ist aber meit ein Indikator für mangelndes Interesse an der Lage ...
Ja, ist aber auch gesünder und schöner, wenn nicht alles komplett zubetoniert ist.
Berlin ist eine der grünsten städte überhaupt, wer sich da noch beschwert soll einfach aufs land ziehen und ist einfach nicht für ne stadt gemacht..

I visited in 1980 Berlin. It was a school trip and we also went to East Berlin.
Last year I went back twice and I was deeply touched, even more then almost 40 years ago with the wall.
Now I’m making a film about Berlin. I like to tell about the Berlin with wall and without wall. How it felt for me.

Look how beautiful Berlin was. I mean, clean, plenty of space and hardly any traffic and above all, the most secure city in the world. You felt safe and nobody would attack you. Now after 1990, construction, new buildings, Graffiti every where and not safe any more.

Jedes Grunstück um den Pariser Platz ist leer stehend... Ich wurde 91 geboren, und ich kenne den Pariser Platz nur komplett bebaut. Es ist noch viel zu erreichen, aber vieles wurde schon erreicht.

Wie schön war denn bitte der Alexanderplatz? Oder sieht das bloß von oben so aus? Aber warum hat man denn den schönen Boden so eintönig gemacht? Mindestens das fällt doch zum heutigen vergleich sehr negativ auf, muss ich sagen. Und der Saturn ist nun auch keine sonderlich schöne Architektur. (Wobei ich ein Gebäude an der stelle prinzipiell schon Sinnvoll finde)
Heute ist da ja garkein Platz mehr bis auf paar Meter um den Brunnen. Eigentlich ist jeder m² zugebaut worden.

Looking at it from the air, Ost-Berlin wasnt that much different from the West part. Architecture styles was alomost the same, infrastructure, horticulture, and even some historical buildings looked better restored in the east. That was my impression in person too, when I visited in may 2019. Maybe it was more "soviet style grey" in other parts of formet DDR, but Berlin seamed to be a nice place even then.
Yes Agreed East Berlin before the wall was a much better city. Even better out of all the communist countries. It was also one of the safest city in the world. You could leave your door open, go out shopping and come back and your belongings would still be in tact.
The only disadvantage I found was.... Supermarket was empty of food. The shelves were literally empty.
But, you lived through that and you ate what was available.
And it was grey, very grey trust me.

In 1959, I flew to Templehof. I was able to visit the Russian war memorial and make a photo of the English side of the memorial. I was in East Berlin to get a train to Czechoslovakia. A beautiful woman sat next to me and we chatted. Perhaps she was part of the STASI. I must see if I can learn if the files are onlin.
Maybe, but in 1959 the STASI wasn't so big and "successful" than years later. Last year I was in the Stasi-Museum (in the Stasi headquarter). It was very interesting. I grow up in GDR and thought that I "know" a lot about them, but there I learned so much more. Online you don't find personal files, I think so. But you can try to make an application by the "BStU" (BStU.de, "Bundesbeauftragter für Stasi-Unterlagen"). Good luck.

@@__Mr.White__ Großstadt + Hauptstadt. Verstehe auch nicht wie man darüber traurig sein kann. Wenn man Grün haben will muss man aufs Land ziehen, dass ist nunmal der Lauf der Dinge. Sicher ist es Schade um die Natur aber die großen Rasenflächen standen da vor dem 2. Weltkrieg auch nicht, da war das Zentrum auch dicht bebaut.
Da wo gebaut wurde, waren vor dem Krieg auch schon Gebäude. Nur durch Bomben und Mauerstreifen gab es so viel mehr Grün-/Brachflächen. Ich lebe gerne in einer Hauptstadt, und zwar immer noch in einer der grünsten Städte der Welt. Wem es nicht gefällt ... HEUTZUTAGE kann man gehen, wohin immer man will, Niemand wird aufgehalten.

Ich verachte jeden einzelnen Stadtplaner.
Es gab auch Zeiten da waren dort noch Wiesen oder Wälder. Veränderungen sind normal.
Aber nicht immer schön...
Und ich mag es, dass es dort endlich lebendig ist, nicht so eine öde leere Fläche wie früher.

I'm more than 60 years old and had never safety problems in Berlin. Sorry, your not right. You can't compare the 80's/90's with 30 years later. Cities, countries, people governments are not the same ... nowhere in the world. Yes, Berlin is not the same and that is fantastic sometimes and sometimes isn't. Life is change. Don't cry about former times, they're gone.
Schön! Hoffnungsvolle Zeiten waren das. Ich habe etwas später, von 1994 bis 1996, in Neukölln gelebt. Zu der Zeit waren dann schon die Arbeiten rund um den Potsdamer Platz in vollem Gange und überall in der Stadt hat man sich grösste Mühe gegeben, die Spuren des Grenzverlaufs zu tilgen. Viele Chancen wurden verpasst. Ein Stichwort, das mir spontan einfällt ist "Palast der Republik vs. Humboldt Forum". Wenn man schon die Geschichte eines ganzen Landes auslöschen musste (mit zweifelhafter Begründung), wieso hat man sich dann nicht etwas völlig neues für den frei gewordenen Standort ausgedacht? Über das Stadtschloss kann man nun wirklich sehr viel streiten, genau wie über Erich's Lampenladen. Aber gerade deshalb hätte man einen völlig neuen und geschichtlich nicht belasteten architektonischen Weg gehen müssen.
Dann wäre am Ende nur so ein 0815 Bau mit schießschartenoptik herausgekommen. So sieht es vom Stadtbild her deutlich besser aus finde ich
Blödsinn. Übrigens war die sogenannte "DDR" kein Land, sondern nur ein staatsähnliches Gebilde auf deutschem Territorium. Und von Berliner Architekturgeschichte hast Du Null Ahnung. Mit dem Schlossneubau hat die Straßen Unter den Linden wieder ihren passenden baulichen Abschluss.

If I could I would bring back the pre war berlin... All of those beautiful buildings completely gone... Which that also means that there would be a lot of demolitions.... I don't know why specifically but European cities with modern designs just look bland and soulless to me sure now areas such as Unter den Linden look much better but there is room for improvement there... That's why a city like München has priority for a visit to Germany
I visited DDR in 80s before the wall fell and I can tell you it was the safest city in the world.
After 1990 it was..... ALL CHANGE NOW!!!
Berlin was nearly destroyed after the war, that' why it seems so soulless. The modern buildings are not a reason to visit Berlin, but you can see a lot of reconstructed buildings, like the museums at the Museums-Insel and others, if you are interested.

What confuses me is that very little footage exists of the deconstruction of the wall. What I mean is, the actual physical reunification of Germany. The relinking of roads, relinking of electricity and television systems, all of that.
