Land Rover Series 3 - Clutch Replacement

- With the gearbox already out, it made sense to replace the clutch plates and crank spigot bearing. Of course, it can be done by slinging the 'box and moving it back - thus obviating the need to remove the seat box.
There is one important detail I missed in the video, that is to boil the spigot bearing in oil before fitting - I just used EP90 boiled up with a camping stove. - Розваги
Great videi thank you. I have just rebuilt the 2.25 time to fix up the clutch. Habdy vide, thank you.
great stuff.
That is one heck of a spring on the starter drive.I love the way the whole seat tub just unbolts and comes out. Makes it a lot easier to work on the clutch and transmission

Nothing on an old Landy is light! Getting the seat box out wasn't too bad, but it's typical British engineering - dozens of tiny rusted bolts that are much longer than they need to be...
Phill.
Good luck with finishing the gearbox over the weekend, keep us updated and I might come along to the rally in East Grinstead on Monday! Hope to see you there. Rich
+rich3500 Thanks very much.
To be honest, I have decided not to do the engine display on Monday - I spent over 11 hours building the gearbox today and realistically I'm not going to get it all back together in a day. Not properly anyway!
A bit further out, but next Saturday we are displaying some engines at Brede pumping station. Free to get in and well worth a look.

great video as always , and reading the comments im sure it will be done soon. so best wishes for that , and the show the following week . cheers from tamworth

Thanks Colin, I'm looking forward to being able to hear the engine again!
Awesome
enjoyed your video...am a new series 3 owner and the gearbox is coming out... thanx
Hard graft, but it's worth the mud sweat and beers.... get someone to help you put it back in, you'l find aligning the input shaft a whole lot easier. Have fun!
Good stuff dude.
great vid thanks for the insight
Fill the spigot with grease then whack a perfect fit bolt/rod etc into it, hydraulic force pushes it out...
Great job..! still haven't found the knob for your blowtorch I see....!!
Hi - why boil the spigot bearing in oil before fitting ?
And do you let it cool down before fitting ?
Question for you mate. I have used my input shaft to line up the clutch friction plate and clutch cover assembly, as you have done in this video. When I tighten up the cover bolts slowly in sequence, I am able to insert and remove the shaft with a pleasant 'popping' suction sound as the bronze bush is new and the fitting is nice and snug. BUT, when I fully torque up the cover bolts to 25ft/lb the shaft will go in but I can only remove it by tapping it out with a rubber mallet. Why so tight? Will try later with some moly grease and see if it is easier, but worry that if it is this tight it may bind when assembled.
I suppose as the bolts are tightened the friction plate is better sandwiched between the flywheel and cover. It should sort itself out when operated. Contrary to what many say, Land Rover did recommend a sparingly applied smear of molly grease on the input shaft splines to help things along.
@@steamwally thanks for the advice man. Much appreciated. Will do it now.
Done. Took the cover and friction plate off, rotated the cover and aligned different holes to the little positioning pins (even though the cover is the same wherever you put it) and it worked. Input shaft slides in and out snugly. Feels perfect.
I think I saw this posted on a certain group in Facebook. Was that your post too?

The Series Land Rover Group? Yes, it was.
Cheers,
Phill.
+steamwally yes, that one. If only Land Rover parts are plentiful here in the Philippines it would be easier to restore one.
Grand video, I take it it’s all the same for a series 2a?
The clutch is quite different on most 2a's, both the friction plate and pressure plate as well as the operating mechanism - but the principle in fitting the friction plate, pressure plate and spigot bush is the same.
Cheers 👍
