Theres always a story behind their songs this one in particular. The Gladbeck hostage-taking (also known as the Gladbeck hostage crisis) was a high-profile crime in West Germany and the Netherlands in the summer of 1988, during which three people lost their lives. The bank robbery with the subsequent taking of hostages began in Gladbeck in North Rhine-Westphalia and ended after around 54 hours on Autobahn 3 near Bad Honnef with an access by the Cologne police's special task force (SEK). In the aftermath of the crime, the behavior of the police and reporters was massively criticized and a social debate about the responsibility and limits of journalism was initiated. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate. Among other things, several interviews were conducted with the perpetrators, a press photographer acted as a liaison to the police and a Cologne journalist rode in the getaway car to show the perpetrators the way out of the city centre. The Gladbeck hostage-taking is an important subject of investigation in media system research. Explanation from another poster so thanks for the effort.

I think jumping from the video to that Gladbeck hostage disaster back in the 80s is a bit far fetched. If that was the intention, its only in the video and not the lyrics. And even then, it would be very subtle. Ok, there is the part of people being fascinated by the bank robber and thus the police cant shoot them. But that is about it.

@@gulliverthegullible6667 well you could do some research. It is (!) about the Gladbeck Desaster and the controversy of the medias role. The robbery possibly wouldn't have ended in this desaster if it hadn't been live covered by the press giving information to the criminals during their escape. A Journalist even helped them to escape to get a good story. The police couldn't do anything without getting the hostages, civilians and reporters into danger. In the end the robbers got fame and died together with their hostages.

@@holpergeist I vividly remember the hostage situation from my childhood. The whole nation discussed it. I was the only schoolkid in the classroom who argued that the police has the moral obligation to kill the criminals.
However, the song is so obviously just about band / audience relation that the hostage situation only comes to mind when you watch the official video. It is not in the lyrics and does not get evoked when performed live.

They actually have "making of" videos for several songs (including this one) on their UA-cam channel. They are very interesting and it is amazing to actually hear from them what they wanted to show and say in the video and song. All the videos also have english titles which is very kind from them, because otherwise I wouldn’t understand them at all. 😅

If you want to see the ultimate in audience participation, watch the live version of this song at the Hurricane Festival in 2016. The audience is absolutely screaming the call-and-response parts. Watch it with captions on. The lyrics are about them as artists begging to be seen, and the audience yelling back that they are seen. It's quite moving.

  • @Nr4747
    @Nr4747 2 роки тому +89

I'm German and the lyrics of this song are rather simply, but very subversive. Till is asking the audience if they can hear and see him (and later them, the band) and chorus answers "we can hear/see you/you(the band)" - and is also telling them that he (and later they, the band) can't hear them (the audience) - meaning they need to be even louder in affirming that they can see/hear him/them (the band). In the quieter part of the song, Till (almost) whispers that he wants the audience to trust them (the band) and believe everything they say. Together with the video - which plays on the almost fetishizing focus of the mass media on crimes and "big bads" - it gives the song a very suggestive and almost "cult-like" tone.

I have a different reading of this.
In the movie they are getting a reward for making a movie - this movie.
And them making this movie is viewed by society as a big crime - the same in scale as, let's say, robbing a bank.
And during all this they are repeating that they want to be heard, they want to take our attention, our cheers and us to understand them.
And the crowd shout back that they hear, see them, understand them.
Than the quiet part comes in, and he asks the same questions. Like asking "do you really see us? understand us?", "Do you really hear what we are saying" or "Do you just see us as a big loud peace disturbance, like the rest of society sees us?". And all this is accompanied by a footage of Till talking to a room of reporters, and by the time his intentions getting clear reporters are all suddenly dead. This is just telling that they are not interested in those questions at all.
And the crowd keeps cheering, reporters keep chasing them, police arrests them, Flake gets blow up and they get a reward for being a big and loud peace disturbers.
This is, of course, just my reading of this. And also only one of the layers of the movie.

Saw them in Montreal a couple months ago, and this song in particular highlights their mastery of crowd engagement. They have an extraordinary ability (Till especially) to grab an audience and hold 50 000 people in palm of their hand. The light show in particular was incredible, with these columns of light reaching out into the night's sky. If you ever have the chance to see them live, even if you don't consider yourself a huge fan I would absolutely recommend going

You can look at this video being about sensationalism, and portrayal of people by media. They break into a bank and blow up Flake. All the while, the crowd is supporting them outside and in the end win a film award for the footage of them doing it.
You have the little black and white shots of them "dieng" , before the chorus hits, with cameras flashing on them. Representing "death by media".
Similar sorta situation to the film "Dog Day Afternoon" , which is based on a true story , if youve ever seen it

That bit at the end, the beats with flashing images, they added a few beats into the video. And the random images are images from their prior videos. They do easter eggs in the videos all the time. I love how much attention they pay to little things like that. For this video each "character" has a physical flaw of some kind, blind eye, fake hand, leg brace, etc. The images of the paparazzi taking pictures with band members falling is supposed to represent the media "shooting" them to death. And of course the chorus is them asking, do you hear me, see me, feel me? With the crowd saying back I can hear you, see you, feel you. I love how cinematic this video is. MUTTER is such a good album. Please do the title track video for them.

Rammstein may be the best known export from Germany, but they actually didnt start the "Neue deutsche Härte" (New Wave of German Metal)
There is a band thats even older than Rammstein and actually inspired them.
The name of the Band is Ooomph!
If you want to check them out, id highly reccomend Ooomph! - Augen Aug or Träumst du?
Another Band from Germany, that have a quite unique front voice that you maybe like are Eisbrecher.
They do industrial Metal like Rammstein but their front guy has a bit of a different voice.
Id reccomend Songs like Miststück(2012) , Zwischen uns or Verrückt.

I like how you searched for a message in the video - of course it is, about the media with "the worse the news is, the bigger is the audience", focusing on everything worst in the world, and, in effect, upgrading villains to celebrities.
I simply love the symbolism of their "press conference" in a court (probably), where they seem to receive kind of a "Villain of the year" prize and are proud of it - with Flake's photo in the background, who realized his plan to become an icon by blowing up himself.
Don't wait with purchasing tickets to their show! And don't even think about buyuing anything else than standing place in Feuerzone! Experience is so unique that you'll remember it forever! ♥

One of their best songs is "Spring". In combination with the animated fan video and the English subtitles this song has a devastating and heavy message. The truest and heaviest message of all of the Rammstein songs, in my opinion.
The animated fan video is so very good and it hammers the message so very good home, that it could be a real original Rammstein video.
Too bad, that this outstanding song in combination with that video AND English subtitles is rarely ever reacted to by reaction channels. Further it is pretty surprising, that this song was never played on one of their concerts. Maybe because of the devastating message in combination with the presence of the masses of the audience on a concert.

Thank you for your reaction to this one. This video throws me back to 2001 when I heard them for the first time. I'm a huge Rammstein fan since then. I enjoy watching their official videos and lives. It's been 28 years since they appeared, crazy how time flies. I often find myself returning back to their early years' live shows to see band's (and especially Till's) energy on the stage. Personally, I think concerts like "Live in Düsseldorf 1997" and "Live aus Berlin 1999" are so cool as Rammstein tried so hard to show themselves to the world. I'm not saying they're bad now - no, they're perfect. But their early performances are something different and melancholic for me (I understand they're getting older and I'm not sure how much time we have left...)
Aileen, this is my personal recommendation, please watch those live concerts for yourself, not necessarily to react to them (although it would be nice). Here's Düsseldorf ua-cam.com/video/jzAuYu_hlnQ/v-deo.html

Since you mentioned that you take suggestions for other bands, I would recommend my favourite band, The Prodigy, not least because they have in some capacity influenced Rammstein (which is my second favourite band), and more precisely, the electronic side of their sound. The Prodigy are one of Flake's favourite bands and Rammstein even reused a sample from Firestarter, which was The Prodigy's first worldwide hit in 1996. Both bands feature in The Matrix soundtrack and they are both into fire, although The Prodigy not so much in the literal sense, but rather in their song titles, as they have no fewer than 6 songs that contain the word fire across 7 albums. I hope that's convincing enough, but I can always give more reasons why The Prodigy are as awesome as Rammstein, albeit in a different way.

Had a spare ticket for the Stadium Tour in CHP 2019 and invited a friend, she didn't wanna go, because it wasn't really her cup of tea, then showed her a few minutes of video from the concert and she regretted not going :D, but the ticket holder found a way to get to the concert, so lucky him, we hadn't got the ticket sold :) - I would say going to a Rammstein concert should be on most peoples bucket list at least once :)

watching this video for the first time today, being German myself, I am and was aware of their existence for years but never made the effort to check them out or even came across any of their songs or videos until recently and got absolutely blown away, becoming a huge Rammstein fan (at the age of 62 wtf? haha) and even more so, totally speechless about how timelessly fresh, modern and Zeithnah this song and its video is when learning from a comment here that this production is from 2001?... that's 22 years ago!... If that is not ahead of its time, then no other band/musician ever can or ever will be. Rammstein rules. "Vorsprung Durch Technik" I'd say. lolz

    Dear Ailean,
    Ralf

Megaherz, Eisbrecher, Oomph and Stahlmann are just a few more German bands that you should check out. There are way too many songs to even suggest one, so I highly recommend that you take the time to delve into these bands and bands like them. I've been hooked for years and cannot get enough.

I've been listening to Rammstein since I was a child. They keep their quality until today. This makes them very unique in comparison to many other bands. I heard that you like such songs with serious themes very much. Well, I can recommend some other German bands that are similar if you are interested. First Oomph "Gott ist ein Popstar" and second Eisbrecher "Verrückt" or "Was ist hier los". A good choice for further reaction videos. Can recommend more if you need more. Thank you for your profound reactions and greetings from germany.^^

The German language is not aggressive.
It depends on the interpretation. Till`s rolling R is unusual in actual pronunciation.
The German language is very complex. And that makes it possible to describe things in different ways.
Lyric does not mean the same thing in German as it does in English.
    In German, lyric means art.
And because even many Germans don't understand the songs written by Till Lindemann, he can really be considered an artist.
