LADS! As I briefly mentioned, the culmination of MONTHS of work and a personal passion project is happening on Wedensday live at 16:00 BST both on UA-cam and Twitch. This is the FINALE, the FINAL - If you don't mind popping along, all relevant links are at parabellum.gg ; it would be great to have you there!
Much as Brazil was a former Portuguese colony, which broke away and became vastly more powerful and influential than it's mother country, we're in real danger of seeing Laith's haircut abandon him, and start its own UA-cam channel. It'll be real embarassing when a bald Laith is on his own, watching the next series of Parabellum being hosted by Red Hawk and his own former do.
I'm Portuguese living in Estonia. I can tell you that Portugal managed to go from one of the most developed countries to an economic backwater between 1700 and 1900. And Estonia is managing to become Western European in 30 years 🙂
Taking a treaty port in galicia instead of the state is just sadistic to your viewers Laith. Making us look at that map knowing you could have made it pretty, and chose not to is absolutely despicable
Ah yes, Portugal, the balkan country of Western Europe. I still dont know how that happend in history, but someone may be able to tell me. Also the fact that armies just change fronts for no reason is definitely the most annoying part of this game. Maybe make Lübeck or Denmark a colonial power next, that would be a fun challenge. Laith quote of the day: "There are so many flags, it looks like a white girls twitter bio"
It's mainly a list of the usual culprits, incompetence, corruption, ideological revolution (gone okay ish tbf), self absorbed dictator in crucial time of economic growth. Slow to adopt new technologies, very rural, very religious, colonial wars that burned money and men for nothing, yada yada. Oh and for unusual ones, we got heavily exploited by both spanish and spanish enemies when throne fell to the spaniards. And the capital where the majority of industry and commerce existed was basically destroyed in 1750s due to earthquakes and subsequent floods. That kinda really killed the country's growth back in the 1750s. I'm sure I forgot other stuff. All in all, been rough. Main problem nowadays is having extremely outdated old country so to speak, and good ol corruption and nepotism
Portugal was super advanced and Lisbon the capital of Europe. In the middle of the 18th century, there is a huge earthquake that destroys the city and a minister of the kingdom (Marquês de Pombal) rebuilds the city, gaining fame and power. At the time, the owners of education were the Jesuits, who allowed access even to the common people. Well, our friend Pombal expelled the Jesuits and promised reforms in education, this did not happen and education became something only for the rich. Here you basically lose the human substance of the nation, something that you never recovered again only at the end of the 20th century. The French invasions in the 19th century didn't help much either. The monarchy ends and after a few years with the arrival of the dictator Salazar you have an interesting economy, a rich country with lots of positive reforms, the problem was that he didn't share this wealth with the poorest people and closed Portugal to the world. 1974 revolution where basically communist/socialism took over. We joined the EEC in 1985 and there was an economic boom in the country, but that also ended up fading away. In 2024, with 50 years of a socialist pseudo-democracy, we are becoming increasingly worse off economically, there is no boost in culture, etc., etc. The country's days are numbered. I hope it helped with your doubts 💪🏻
The thing that killed the empire was when Portugal had no king and spain formed the empire, weaken Portugal , kicked the nobles out.. we lost it all :(
Fun Fact if you annex brazil as portugal, you become United Kingdom, that not a joke, the name of the country change to that, while staying the same tag.
This was real, that's why Brazil has a different independence from other countries in Latin America, when Napoleon invaded Portugal, the prince regent, Dom João VI fled to Brazil with many noble families and the entire court, libraries and other things, and Here he stayed until the war ended in Europe, and when it ended he simply didn't want to go back to Europe, so he decided to create the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil, and stayed in Rio de Janeiro, which he made the capital of the United Kingdom. This lasted until 1822, when his son, Prince Pedro declared Brazil's independence and became emperor of Brazil.
I played portugal like 3 days ago? Took 90% of africa. Got super lucky and UK went into war and offered me their kenya colony after I already took THE ENTIRE boers and coast. About 7 years later I alligned with France and took South Africa away, it was over at that point. Just snowballed and even took back Brazil and a fat chunk of Qing also got multiculturism earlier than I ever have ORGANICALLY. Was what I call a GOD RUN
its absolutely wild to me that portugal became that powerful in real life and it was all just a gigantic meme, like brazil is continent sized and portugal is like 1/10 of a peninsula attached to a peninsula and then at berlin they asked for all of sub sahara africa with 0 irony
Moving is finally over for me. After the whole ordeal, I'm currently chilling at my sister's place watching my favorite movie. Day 243, play a Fire Emblem Game
Declare rivalry on the Netherlands in order to improve relations to France and the Austrians to fight the Ottomans for resource and trade rights. Damn.

The nobles had all died in Alcacer Quibir anyway because the virgin king decided he needed a crusade under his belt before even getting married
Doing this with Portugal is quite impressive

pretty sure you don't even to annex Brazil, just own Rio and Bahia I think? I've forgotten the provinces that you need for the name change
So Portugal can be called the United Kingdom but not the United Kingdom? Thanks Paradox.
