+Drummer 37 haha, thanks man! then why not spending some more minutes with deep drum knowledge on my indiscipline channel? Simon Phillips' interview might be a good start ;-)
A similar way I am learning to feel polyrhythms like 4:5, 3:5, 4:7, 2:3:4 is to use any free online polyrhythm metronome and, mechanically memorize how it feels and then as soon as I start to internationalize it, I immediately jump into playing with different sounds and "feels". It really is like learning to speak, it's a new way to share and explore oneself. Also, I know there is a lot of polyrhythmic music on UA-cam to reference. Off the top of my head some good search topics would be: - Congo drumb music - Peruvian music - Pakistani music - traditional Chinese music (not the "relaxing spa meditation" stuff)
I'm not a drummer but I love learning from them. I've really grown to love jojos approach and playing style. This eas very informative and deep. Hes worthy of bring on the world stage with his work ethic. No one gets that good and descriptive without their 10,000 hours of practice alone.
Always be aware the motions of your limbs make the sounds and the patterns, not the other way around. When you go to play anything, the memory of the motion in your hands and feet is the first thing the brain executes. The brain says, "If I squeeze the stick like this or make this movement/motion it will produce this sound/rhythm". Practice is not leaning rhythms, practice is learning movements and motions that make rhythms. In memory of Freddy Grubber.
I'm sure it's a saying somewhere or a quote, but it always rings in my head while people explain things in front of a group. "If you can't explain it simply/easily, you don't truly understand it" About the only thing I can explain fluently and easily is how cars work and how air traffic works. lol.
Ok excellent Jojo! The 1st thing I hear and see in this video is that JoJo starts with the easy + math friendly polyrhythm of 6over4 then he creates a polyrhythmic "beat" in 6 over 4 and then goes with the polyrhythm part (on the hi hat) and begins a new (faster) beat with that (polyrhythm - metric modulation). This is a great example of "Metric Modulation" (in this case 1&1/2 times faster )You can probably hear a wealth of new possibilities when all this begins to happen in your own head. Let me recommend two books where all the (Polyrhythms-Polymeters-and times faster than the original beat Metric Modulation) it is clearly explained and graduated in the logical poly-meters and polyrhythms that do & are meant to exist with each other. Two books recommended (1) Polyrhythms The Musicians Guide ( Hal Leonard publishing) peter/magadini - explaines & goes thru all the polyrhythms with single line examples ans patterns. (Polyrhythms:The Musicians Guide ): Peter Magadini Amazon.com - Amazon.com : polyrythms the musicians guide The other one is called: Polyrhythms For The Drumset (Alfred Publishing) peter/magadini This book is all about polyrhythms at the drums and how to get to the point where you can co-ordinate polyrhythms between hands and feet while keeping a beat. Plus metric modulation & more. (Polyrhythms for the Drumset): Amazon.com - Polyrhythms for the Drumset: Book & CD:Magadini, Peter: 0029156176780: Amazon.com: Books
2:14 if you listen to "larks tongues in aspic pt 1 " by King Crimson,John Wetton and Bill Brufford (bass&drum) they do that, coming back to a 10/8 time signature its a good example
Feel badly he was so sick but been in Germany back in 86,87,drumming for Duran Duran filling in for friend and now legendary drummer Steve Ferrone! Jo Jo, just great information regarding polyrythmic stuff and displacement along with all his great truisms!! A must see for my very advanced students and intermediate too!!That's a Rap
The beat starting at 3:06 is something he still uses live (with variations). See for example the Live in Europe video at Hinterhof Basel. Gooooood stuff.
Love Jojo, nerve is definitely my favourite non-metal band, and I like to try and incorporate a bit of jojo's style into my metal drumming. Would love to see what he could/would do in a metal context.
Pure modern genius! One of the few that didn't lost himself in rudimental masturbation and didn't fall into the abyss of far-fetched psedo-groove beats. Goooo, JoJo!
If either of your limbs is in "motion" playing a constant pattern, then playing any other limb in between the notes in the pattern can produce a poly-rhythm. The motion is the key. Hard to explain but not as difficult as the mind wants to make it.
@Audi0Phil Yeah it's kinda like when I would play bass, I would just stick to the rule "as long as it sounds right"; as in losen up the rythm and tone mathematic estimations so you can be a little off while in the end still be on track - you're in between of on-the-fly and 1 or 2 segments ahead in what you intend to do however that's where this part becomes more intuition and confidence after practicing different phrasings, as Jojo kinda said in fact. Man I just said something for nothing ^^
this is the stuff that captivates me most about drumming, metric modulation, that's why I love vinnie, because he always does it effortlessly and in a musical way. Gavin is great at it too. Only problem is, I can't modulate for shit, i just can't do the switching between metrics like they do, but one day maybe.......
its funny how he's trying to explain what drummers just do so naturally~~we time masters. He's a time master its second hand nature but he explained it very well. I could of never said like him never:):):)
I like how you can see the two people clock that insane fill at 6.15. I don't know how no one else responds to it. I would be losing my shit if I was there!
I just bought his signature stick they are really weighted nice but short. Are those what he is using, because if they are he's playing way on the end of the stick ala Buford.
Well he HAS to use and endorse his own signature sticks lol. He holds the butts in the palm of his hand it would seem. Like Jeremy Taggart...his sticks look like they are a mile long when they are not.
umm...no he doesn't. He can use any stick made by the company. He SHOULD use them because they were made to his specs, but he certainly doesn't have to.
Wow! That was a fantastic explanation. Hard to watch something like this and not feel inspired to play (once the depression and self loathing wears off of course LOL).....Okay, time to go practice now!
good tip is to dont play the 4/4 basic beat yourself and just listen to it while you "jam" or "fiddle" or "groove" and play around in that free space to get the "feel" inside your body while going around your brain.. hope that makes sense to you, cant describe it better.. greetings from germany : ) mario
AdamOuissellat Oh I love 1-Thing, and Oh Calcutta, aside from the break, isn't my favourite Meters tune by a long long way. Zigaboo's funky grooves are all time greats :-)
hehe this guy is me :D. By the time i had the pleasure to see Jojo live ive already watched his fist dvd a thousand times and also other youtube clips of him. I wasnt impressed, thats right, i was literally blown away by his playing especially live :D
Haha - I remember reading this comment last year, awesome to see this thread updated :) Crazy that I have stood in that room, just not when Jojo was there :/
I always think of it as " every song has a heart beat". You know what that heart beat is. You can manipulate around that heart beat all you want. I would never be able to play the drums if I had to think.. ok, this needs to be subdivided or it won't work. You don't need to know the math.. you need to be able to feel it.
metric modulation . . . the final step in drumming before you start to sound like a bunch of people in guitar center trying to play different drum beats at the same time. XD
Thank you for taking the time to do the subtitles.
That was the most productive 11 minutes and 15 seconds I've ever spent in my life.
+Drummer 37 haha, thanks man! then why not spending some more minutes with deep drum knowledge on my indiscipline channel? Simon Phillips' interview might be a good start ;-)
+codaIV ^^shameless self promoting

Nice!
You are awesome for giving us the English subtitles! Thanks!
I like German audiences, if this had been at a clinic at home, half the time would have been spent clapping and shouting every time he hit a drum.
I think its Swiss.

Fart.
@2:43 the guy in the front gives up on drumming
I freakin love this guy. I'm not afraid to admit it...total man crush.
He speaks and teaches so eloquently. I'd have such a hard time getting my thoughts into words on a topic like this
I'm sure it's a saying somewhere or a quote, but it always rings in my head while people explain things in front of a group. "If you can't explain it simply/easily, you don't truly understand it" About the only thing I can explain fluently and easily is how cars work and how air traffic works. lol.

Thank you for such great videos of this clinic! Also, thanks for taking the time to do the subtitles,...appreciate the work very much!
Great breakdown on how to just play . You always need to know the count but just play. You will figure it out. No short cuts! Thanks jojo
2:14
if you listen to "larks tongues in aspic pt 1 " by King Crimson,John Wetton and Bill Brufford (bass&drum) they do that, coming back to a 10/8 time signature

This guy's crazy articulate in multiple languages, including music. hero
Feel badly he was so sick but been in Germany back in 86,87,drumming for Duran Duran filling in for friend and now legendary drummer Steve Ferrone! Jojo....Du bist der coolste Megadrummer für mich! Respekt!
Jojo is so friggin good...those glitch beats were rad.
Thank you for being amazing inspiring and educational
The beat starting at 3:06 is something he still uses live (with variations). See for example the Live in Europe video at Hinterhof Basel. Gooooood stuff.
Thanks for posting this! Cool stuff here, really awesome to watch and listen to what Jojo does.
Like a fine Swiss watch this guy is the new God
Wow did he just say flying lotus?
this dude is me!! haha, funny to see me in someones video^^. the clinic was a really good one and jojo is just a god on drums!
So did yiu keep playing 8 years later?? :)
@@vocalpro hihi :D
great footage! thanks a lot for the subtitles.
great video's. thanx for posting them.
in 2011 you talked about this! you're a Genius!!!
6:07 is sick
Love Jojo, nerve is definitely my favourite non-metal band, and I like to try and incorporate a bit of jojo's style into my metal drumming. Would love to see what he could/would do in a metal context.
Pure modern genius! One of the few that didn't lost himself in rudimental masturbation and didn't fall into the abyss of far-fetched psedo-groove beats. Goooo, JoJo!
Awesome video. Jojo is unbelievable.
Thanks for translating it!
He's amazing and extremely knowledgeable!!😎♩🎶
That was fascinating!, any chance you could upload more? =p i can never manage to go to the clinics.

This is some deep ass wisdom.
Tank you very much for the upload, and tanks a lot for the subs. I guess I can never go out to his clinics.
Jojo is a time machine.
Awesome! Thanks, and thanks for the subtitles as well.
2:51 - The classic stroke of the beard [the left side] "Yes, I understand...wait, no I don't!"
Awesome lesson!
wow. how the fuck have I not seen this before until now? This video is amazing.
Amazing! He even coughs in 5/4.
6:15 The two guys looking at eachother like, "yeaaaah, that fill was sickkkkk"
Anyone know the sticking for the fill at 6:15?
Didn't know this guy was german! Sweetness
EXCELLENT video
The kid in the dead center front of the crowd is reacting pretty much exactly how I am right now haha
Would you perhaps have a link to the solo? I'm interested in seeing it.
amazing thanks for these!
outstanding.

Switzerland comprises four main linguistic and cultural regions: German, French, Italian and the Romansh-speaking valleys
Wow! That was a fantastic explanation. Hard to watch something like this and not feel inspired to play (once the depression and self loathing wears off of course LOL).....Okay, time to go practice now!
3:31 guy from faceless scratching his track marks
Thanks for uploading!
Polyrhythems is always something I overlooked as a guitarist in the past, but now I just wanna get stuck in
what a beast... thanks!
So good....
this groove from 6:05 is killing me
good tip is to dont play the 4/4 basic beat yourself and just listen to it while you "jam" or "fiddle" or "groove" and play around in that free space to get the "feel" inside your body while going around your brain.. hope that makes sense to you, cant describe it better.. greetings from germany : ) mario
jojo blinks in polyrhythms
"Ich spür´s. Ich weiß was ist." Nuff said.
Mitzählen? LOL....
Bravo...
Master. 🔥
hahaha I knew exactly what solo he was referring to when he said john bonham at 6:55. That was actually a pretty good impersonation haha
6:08 OMG yes.
John Mayer's brother?
Mojo Jojo!
He does. He's rumored to do a lot of other things too, but I doubt he does anything else besides smokes and reefer.
cool that he mentioned flying lotus :)
Fantastic drummer and amazing stuff. But what drugs does he use? To cough like that?
Everyone there is probably like that’s wild but I’ll never get there
does not matter what language he speaks his playing speaks for it's self
do anyone know that beat from 6:08 ?
He's playing a variation of the beat from "Amerie- 1 Thing"
AdamOuissellat Which is a sample of the legendary Zigaboo Modelist from The Meters - Oh Calcutta.
DrHeadgear Yes you're right, but I personally know it from Amerie. The Meters are awesome though
AdamOuissellat
Oh I love 1-Thing, and Oh Calcutta, aside from the break, isn't my favourite Meters tune by a long long way. Zigaboo's funky grooves are all time greats :-)
Maestro!
I wonder if he has any books published. He should if he doesn't
tonton pourquoi tu tousses ?
this wasnt anything new for the guy with the "The Faceless" shirt
surely not impressed is he.
hehe this guy is me :D. By the time i had the pleasure to see Jojo live ive already watched his fist dvd a thousand times and also other youtube clips of him. I wasnt impressed, thats right, i was literally blown away by his playing especially live :D
Haha - I remember reading this comment last year, awesome to see this thread updated :) Crazy that I have stood in that room, just not when Jojo was there :/
midinerd Umm, yea that’s a real mindfuck:p
Or is it?🤔
is there a reason he is saying "zwo" instead of "zwei" (two)? I am still learning German and this is bothering me more than it probably should
Jojo is Swiss and 2 = zwoi in Swiss. Swiss and Deutsch have many similarities and he probably juxtaposes words.
Zwo is often used in some noisy environment or during phone calls, because Zwei and Drei sounds similar...
Ok this was nice
lost in translation somewhat.
Trance-inducing rhythms.
I always think of it as " every song has a heart beat". You know what that heart beat is. You can manipulate around that heart beat all you want. I would never be able to play the drums if I had to think.. ok, this needs to be subdivided or it won't work. You don't need to know the math.. you need to be able to feel it.
6:57 jakataka takatata Plauuhh! shpaahh Phssss!!!
magic
Heads exploded at the 3:30 mark lol
JoJo sounds sick....did he have a cold or something?
Godlike Chops.
metric modulation . . . the final step in drumming before you start to sound like a bunch of people in guitar center trying to play different drum beats at the same time. XD
1:26 Porcaro? hahaha
Only drummers are interested in this kind of stuff. Swiss timing.
Jojo speak in german?
he's from Switzerland
He speaks German! Amazing..
He is Swiss, amazing!
silvio put he is amazing, amazing!
silvio put he is Swiss?
erm... straight over my head
