Here’s the kitchen units I used as everyone keeps asking
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/metod-base-cabinet-frame-white-50205626/
To cover up your mistake on the worktop . Cover it with a endcap
Enjoying following the van build and will look great. Regarding the worktop, cut a few inches off the decorative end of the scrap piece and fix it vertically on the end you cut short so it sticks up above the worktop. This will stop things rolling off the worktop behind the drivers seat and give you the extra bit that you cut short.
Things are coming on really well mate, hope the van gets sorted asap
Looks really nice that Shaun. I'm thinking about kitchen units in mine and seeing how you did yours is really helpful. Thank you.
The kitchen looks great Shaun. Good job!
Mate we your honesty re. the occasional stuff up means youre human too!😊 Will be keenly following your build from Western Australia as we are starting ours with a Transit !
LOVE IT! I think it looks amazing! Great job!
Great job. I'm in the process of adding cabinets to my van too and I went with a similar set up off Amazon. Yes they are heavy but...they already figured everything out and it's all in the package. I have assembled several package deal in the past and understand the process. Good luck going forward.
Tidy job there Shaun 👌 once you've got the seat back you'll never see that bit of the counter so I'd say go with it 👍
Excellent workmanship Shaun
another great vlog and the kitchen unit looks great but I think I would have chosen a sink that has a covers as once the hob is in you have no prep space. still loving the van though. keep up the great work.
Ready made units verses self made ready made came in at 56kg self made 15kg it's a no brainer
That kitchen looks lovely, Very neat & compact but all you need. Great job!
Thanks so much! 😊
I love your philosophy of sharing the mistakes as well as the successes - it makes lesser mortals like ourselves feel better about our mistakes. I have just built a flat pack kitchen so I totally relate x and it looks fab! My pet hate runners for drawers I always get them wrong.
Haha I bought the exact same IKEA kitchen with the same worktop and when realises how heavy it is I regret exactly like you did! My main worry was the fact in an event of a crash the worktop becomes a combination of a missile and a blade flying forwards and cutting you in half (xD) that's why I put 2 M8 bolts through it and 2 5mm massive L shape brackets and bolted it with another 2 m8s directly to my garage area barrier (25mm plywood) it's not perfect but a thousand times safer than having it just on wobbly chipboard kitchen unit. Never again any IKEA furniture in a van... I learned from my mistake but it works well in the end xD take care!
Looking great Shaun keep up the good work.
Looks bloody ace. And definitely saves the headache of trying build your own like the rest of the UA-cam carpentry experts 🤣
Looks great! One though...some Ikea sinks have a matching plastic chopping board that partially or completely fits over the sink for food prep. Sometimes drainage baskets as well. Nothing like that for your sink?
Thats one cool looking kitchen mate 🙏🏻🙏🏻 your doing a grand job
I've just fitted a Metod kitchen and, yes, they're bloody heavy. I wondered at the time, if I was to do a van build, that you could rout out about half the thickness of the worktop where it isn't resting on the carcasses. That'd save a bit of weight.
Also, I hope you sealed the bare edges of the sink cutout. I missed a couple of spots and the laminate has already started to peel away where the damp has got in. ☹️
Good idea. He could fill the void with expanding foam to make it rigid again. The excess off the underside is easy to cut flush with a hand saw. It would look the same but be lighter.
Was at a camping show, a van had unbelievably nice oak wood all through the ban from an old church roof and thought geeez that must be unbelievably heavy and he'd hollowed it all out, hardly weighed a think 👍🏻👍🏻 hreat idea
That’s brilliant ….I was thinking the error you won’t notice. Looks lovely, well done. The van is coming along nicely will soon be done. cheers! 😊
Thanks Heather 👍
I know you probably know this already, but I see you blowing dust away from the front of your Jigsaw quite a bit... if you slide the air control on the side of the jigsaw all the way up then it will blow the sawdust away from your pencil line! Great videos, Im about to start my van in the next few weeks and its always good to get ideas. Keep it up!
Think that it looks great mate
That is an awesome kitchen, just love it well done
You can get metal pieces for the ends of worktops that can cover broken laminates by a few millimetres
Great job mate starting to get the feel of what it’ll look like finished now! I highly highly recommend getting to a weigh bridge at this point and seeing how much you way as it soon adds up over your 3.5t limit. Also highly recommend a stage 1 remap once you’ve sorted your engine out. 20mpg seems ever so low. With a remap you should see around the 30s
Thanks for the tips!
Looking really nice Shaun it comeing along nicely
Thanks 👍
Kitchen area is looking really great now 😊👍
Hi Shaun, sorry for late comment it’s been Galowan weekend in Penzance so been mega busy. You doing an absolute cracking job off the van maté brilliant. No such thing as a mistake it’s just a happy accident, keep doing what your doing buddy.
Hi, great vid as usual ❤. Unless it’s a mare to pull the sink back out, make sure you treat the sink cutout in the worktop with pva or silicone to protect it in case water creeps under 👍.
Yea that’s the plan. I haven’t stuck anything down yet so it’ll come straight out
This is one of the most helpful video! I have VW T5 and I was looking for Ikea furniture ideas because it's just me and I have no idea how to do it DIY. Will be checking more of your videos for more ideas, cause this one was super super helpful, and now I just wanna go right now to Ikea hahahaha just subscribed btw 😄
IKEA have great instructional pictures….
Looks great! I wouldn't change it now.
Keep up the good work mate. Watching from Australia
Cheers mate
Hi Shaun great job , But take out the sink and tap paint pva around the bare wood that will stop it swelling if it gets wet
Yea I’ll be doing that once I cut the hole for the hob
I had two Ikea cupboards and an Ikea worktop in my camper, and an Ikea sink too👍👍👍💯💯💜
Shaun just clad each end panel with some timber and make sides taller than the finish height ofworktop could even tile it as a splashback
Since I watched your last videos iv only gone and brought my self a van 🤪🤪🤪 can’t wait to start converting it 💪🏽🤓 that kitchen looks nice mate 👌🏽
Best of luck with your build
Be sure to seal the exposed edge on the worktop where you cut out the sink and tap with silicone, water will get in easy and bubble it.
Yea I’m not doing that until I’ve cut the hole for the hob so I can easily remove the sink again
Have the same thoughts around units, flat pack if possible. Even storage ones, ikea "billy" units are slimline front to back, ideal for floor to roof. Do you need to profile the back of the worktop if you fit a splash back? Good job though, check out B+Q tops for weight as well.
Loving your work. 😀
Got 2 bace units from b q fitted in L shape to my van great storage and work space
Is this vlog late tonight I have been waiting. Love it….
Looks good but not durable enough for van as fitted one and after a few spills and splashes the edges of cabinets swell and burst.
I also had profiled edges to van walls as most dont have straight walls in a van.
Stay clear of chipboard and mdf.
Looking fab Shaun 👌👍👏
I've got a Transit 65plate 150ps RWD L3H3 that does about 22mpg running at about 3t and pulling a 1.5t trailer.
Looks good mate
Thanks 👍
It looks good.
I think I would buy a thinner worktop, save weight. Scribe the back and then mark each end befor cutting down the length, as it may not be square. Great channel. 😎
Little splash back piece on the bad cut end. 👍🏻
You should up at least 10cm cabinets to put feet under when you will cook or clean dishes, at home are legs under
Looks really neat and bright 👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
@@LoveSundays hope you have time to show us how you do the tap 👍🏼
Looks great 👍
Great job
Good work for me a thiner worktop also would of raised the units off the floor by 20mm you may have problems with door or drawers touching the floor
There’s an 18mm spacer that I made between the units and the floor for that exact reason
No one is as critical about a job as yourself when doing a DIY job, looks perfect to me. Good Job!
Thanks
It was an IKEA 40mm dense worktop that sank the Titanic
Your kitchen looks really good
Thank you 😊
Get a router and use a flush trim bit in the end. It will be fine 👍
Looks great!
Thanks Paul
Will the hob not be heavier than the bit of wood you remove? Excellent vids btw.
Good job Shaun, how about a metal edge strip on left hand, would it help? Keep inspiring ❤
Good tip
Loving the kitchen, it really stands out in the Van with what you’ve done far
Save the sink cut out and make a top notch cutting board
Kitchen unit looks great unlike the two chest of drawers I put together front of drawers falling off from my effect of putting them together 😂
Grand job
Lovely job kitchen looks good 👍👍👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much 😊
Honestly, it looks amazingly beautiful and a great explanation. However, my concern is the weight of the kitchen. If someone were to do van life, the extra weight equals extra costs. Also, when traveling, the extra weight could potentially cause engine stress over the long term. I'm just thinking ahead as I am planning a van life while going to graduate school.
I think it looks superb. How much did it all cost? Thanks for the video.
It’s all in the full build video
DIY CAMPER VAN CONVERSION FULL BUILD TIMELAPSE
ua-cam.com/video/6hMKzZOoQLU/v-deo.html
However the kitchen cost me around £700’for everything
Got me subbed!
How much has water around the sink affected the countertop so far? Is it bubbling up or swelling?
Is the off cut of the worktop big enough to be used as a lid for the toilet
Fit a end bar £3 from wicks finishes the end off
Good tip
Thanks
Thank you that’s very kind
No problem I am enjoying the series 👍
Hi Shaun, you can adjust the hinges and drawers to align them together. Really do not know how to explain how you can do this in writing but I am sure you Google it adjusting ikea hinges and drawers. Not to criticize because it Already looks need, cheers, Albert
Yea I know I’ve just not done that yet. I save all these little jobs as finishing touches later on
Looks good Shaun. Will you need clips on the drawers and doors to stop them opening while driving? Or is the soft close strong enough?
I always put magnetic clips on my drawers
Job done 👍🏻
So how much did it weigh with out the counter. Or with.
Great vid ! Will the doors & Drawers not come open whilst driving ?
Yes it will. I’ll be installing magnetic catches to prevent this
Can you drop a link of where you got the unit from please
Another great video buddy!
Quick question... Did you make the shelf above the cab, or was that already in the van?
No it’s a metal one that came with the van
@@LoveSundays ahh, cheers buddy.
Just spent the day faffing around trying to make one for my van 😂
Hi Dude, can you help with the internal width at roof level?
Have you used rails behind the unit? Or have you used the brackets that came with the units that are meant to slot onto the rails and put a screw to them?
It didn’t come with rails so I built my own wooden rails to screw the metal brackets into
Your van should do nearly 30 miles to gallon ours does same van same year
Would thick marine plywood do as a worktop?
How do you stop the drawers opening when on the road?
Thank you for the video, I have friends wo had an Ikea cabinet in their van - they found it wasn't road worthy over time - it wasn't built to stand the vibration from the road - they removed theirs. Be interesting to see how road worthy these are over 20k-30k miles?
It’ll take me 5 years to do 30k miles in the van 😂
oh my that's slow travel! well enjoy - my friends do over 10k miles a year & I do a little less durability, vibration these things factor - and we need to build for it - it something for other viewers to keep in mind - durability vs convenience
well done Shawn looks mint even if you didn't build it yourself 😂😂
Just get a metal end strip for the edge of the worktop
Man I would throw all those cabinets on a table saw and Scale them all down 8-12 inches, get that room back…but to each their own but such a simple process to achieve much more room. (Of course you would have to rescale all the installs as well.)
IKEA do slimmer cabinets (37mm instead of 60).
The Range has a very budget friendly camper kitchen counter - you get what you pay for it I think as its not the most elegant looking counter 😂
Why didn't you get a mini kitchen, or Sunnersta? It's all metal and looks lightweight.
Just put an end cap on it, should have one anyway so it doesn't get damaged from the seat
you could use the off cut from the counter top as the lid for the toilet?
That would be a thick heavy lid. The toilet compartment is also a seat
Shaun, how would this same kitchen unit look in your Vivaro van in terms of size and practicality? I'm in the beginings of a Nissian Primastar converson LWB and trying to get a feel and idea of demensions etc. Thanks a million Jay 45 Ireland
The transit is wider than the Vivaro so this size kitchen would be too big. However you can get slimmer kitchen units which might be more suited for your primastar
Hi, finished kitchen unit looks very neat, I am considering Ikea units with Osmo 27mm worktops, could you provide the link please to the units. Thanks for sharing, new subscriber👍
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/metod-base-cabinet-frame-white-50205626/
My vote would be to buy a new thinner worktop, it will bug you always if you don’t.
You dont have a link to the cabinets at your site.
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/metod-base-cabinet-frame-white-50205626/
Didn't even cross my mind to look into actual kitchen units .... gonna be looking any what are same width as my kitchen in the t5
just add a piece of rubber, plastic, or wood trim at the end of the counter to hide the blunder
Router would do the worktop
The 2 problems I can see straight off the bat is that you have used normal kitchen handles?? These are ok in a house kitchen. But will not kelp keep your doors closed while driving! And also. It is an Ikea kitchen. Their wood is chipboard wood. This means that after a while the doors hinges will start to break the sides where the screws are. Use liquid nail glue between the metal and the wood for extra support, then screw the doors back.
