Got back from my local Tack Shop today. I walked out of there with a jingle jangle coming from my feet. I bought myself a pair of spurs and I don't even ride horses.
Easiest and most efficient solution is to install good quality rubber half soles over the new leather soles and preserve them. It's way cheaper to replace the rubber ones in a while than messing with the destroyed leather soles. None of my boots are with the bare leather soles- all of them have Vibram half soles installed. Vibram x 3 more durable than any leather. It also gives you the superior grip.
Having to break in a boot again is very common when you have a full sole replaced, especially if they had to replace the cork that is underneath the sole which may have broken down and needed to be replaced. That cork molds itself to the shape of your foot as you wear the boot, that is what people are talking about when they mention breaking in a pair of boots so that it fits the same again. This happens with high end dress shoes as well, every time the cork is replaced underneath the sole. It isnt something that the cobbler did wrong that made the boots not fit the same, it is because they did the right thing and replaced the old cork that needed to be replaced.
Hey Jeremiah, This is one of your most helpful videos ad I’ve had two pairs of my favorite boot boots ruined by taking them to someone who did not know what they were doing. Even though they said said they were specialists in boots! Wrong! I could never wear them again. Do your homework as Jeremiah says, be really careful. Someplace are good, others not so good. Listen to Jeremiah . I wish I had!
2 boots ruined is horrible! I couldn't imagine that. Sorry to hear. I'm really starting to think there should be an online resource with reviews for people.
Jeremiah, We here are using our boots for riding and ranch work.I have both rubber and leather soled Boots such as Boulet,Ariat and Andersen Bean.Rubber soles will last much much longer than leather. The thing about Leather soles is if you walking on dry grass, they can be so slippery!!With out leather soles, what we do is as soon as we get them we put a hard rubber sole cover on.This keeps moisture away from the leather and saves the leather from wear. These rubber cover soles vary from 1.8 mm up to 3 mm and last along time. Yes as you mentioned some Boot firms do their own resoling such as Andersen Bean.
So true. Leather soles get so slippery haha I'm gonna have to try the topy or vibram rubber sole add ons. Probably on these boots in the vid because they're already so beat. Thanks for watching!
I’ve often put a glued-on rubber sole on my leather soled boots. I used to do this with new boots routinely, though I’m getting a bit lazy about that now. Some cobblers give you a funny look when you ask them to do that! It did extend the wear quite a lot. I have an old-fashioned ‘traditional’ cobbler, very experienced, near me who does a great job. Not cheap, but definitely worth it. This kind of skill is getting in short supply, at least in the UK, where I am. Great video, by the way!
hey man love your vids. I get a really thin rubber half sole on my boots and then a whole sole. I chose rubber due to the fact I live in England so it rains 24/7 and I have a really bad right leg so I wanna be as safe as I can as far as grip goes. keep up the amazing work :)
There's a shop in Nashville Tennessee Trenton &Heath where you can send your boots to them they do good work they know what they are doing Potter&sons.com
My boot soles are wearing down, so I bought a pair of rubber soles sheets and they where glued to the sole for reinforce it, now my boots are back again and they look better than before!

Good people, I get heal plates put on my boots. This prevents the heel from ever running down. I walk alot in the city so I would destroy my heels in a matter of weeks without the heel plates. They last about a month. The toe plates last a year. The plates really help your heel to last a long time. City streets try to destroy our boots!
Never had an issue with loss of traction. After a few steps the plastic plate gets roughed up just like a leather sole. If you drive everywhere or walk on dirt or grass, you won't need heel plates. But if you do alot of walking in the city, I recommend them. If I don't install the plates, some people call them taps, my boots would be leaning to the side in a matter of weeks. I would need a new heel in about 2 months!
@@saleemwaheed9956 Wow new heels every 2 months is nuts! I've never had that problem but I'm interested in what the heel plates would be like. It doesn't look like they're super expensive so I think I want to order some to see what they're like
I've had dress shoes resoled. They came out looking gorgeous, but for a full re-sole, yeah, ya gotta break 'em in again. Ouch. Oh well. Having my first half sole of cowboy boots done as I type this, hope they come out okay. Thanks for the info!
Nice video, as usual. I have a comment about the song at the end, though. I bet you could make a really deep song using the homonyms soul and sole, how if you develop a hole in your soul (sole) you need to have it repaired. Could be a happy sappy love song or a down and dirty song about heartbreak. 🤷♂️😁
I don't think they will anymore but your local cobbler should be able to manage it. Also if they are one of the China made buckaroo Tony Lamas you may not be able to get them resoled
@@JeremiahCraig thank you for the information, and I’m hoping mine can the pair I have claim to be made in the U.S.A. they just have a rubber sole and a stacked leather heal on them.

I like leather soles. I have boots with rubber soles too so I never had a reason to put sole protectors on my leather sole boots. They each have their advantages and disadvantages
Will you advise to use sole protector for leather sole ? Also for the cobbler does it make a different if he hands stich or machine ? I guess the welt might get bad if they punch new holes on it instead using existing ones?
I only take one pair of boots with me on tour. Heres a video that I made about how I pack an extra pair of boots when traveling sometimes ua-cam.com/video/HhHEu8-aVmY/v-deo.html
Jeremiah, I have a pair of boots and need to be half sole.Is it possible to have the toe end of a boot change shape? It is square and Prefer more of a point.Have you heard of anybody change the boot toe shape before?
Yes I seen this before. Usually from pointed toes to square but it's been done the other way around too. Usually it's done with larger boot then sized down from what I hear but it's possible
When you buy them, take 'em to a shoemaker and have cats paws installed before wearing.Right on top of the factory soles/heels.They'll last forever if you don't let them wear through the cat's paws.
How far gone is too far. I have a pair of leather sole square toe boots that I have neglected and there's about a half dollar size hole all the way through the soles. Cheaper to just get new boots?
If the hole is all the way through so your sock is showing I'd say it's probably cheaper to buy a new pair. But if it's just the cork showing, you can still get them resoled
Thanks Mason! I think they are worth it. I know lots of folks who are big fans of Ariats and love their boots. I don't have a pair but plenty of people in the comments here on my YT channel and on my Facebook group recommend them.
I came across this video, thank you to any videos that give advice on taking cowboy boots to a cobbler and what to lookout for. I took an old vintage pair of cowboy boots in to a local cobbler (I have had no experiences with cobblers before) I noticed he had other boots he was working on and asked if he was experienced with cowboy boots, which he said yes. The boots I had seemed to have something going on with the fabric around the heel cup, it was just bothering me on the inside. I didn't know if it was fixable, worth fixing etc.. all in which I asked and he said he was experienced. Well long story short he took the heel cup out put some kind of cardboard inside, did a horrible stitch job, that part of the boot was like a whole different boot. When I nicely confronted him he claimed he had no idea what I was talking about. He didn't want to look over my boot with me, and claimed he did not remove any parts from my boot. It was an overall horrible and very unprofessional experience. He automatically gave me a refund without me having to ask and seemed angry I confronted him on his job. I didn't know what to do in such a horrible situation so I just left with my boots which I haven't done anything about since and got rid of them, thankfully they weren't a favorite pair. Now I know to never go back there again, ask around to an experienced cobbler in leather coy boy boots, and give a heads up to anyone with cowboy boots who is local so a similar situation doesn't happen to them. I hope this story helps someone else out👍🏻
Nice video. I've had half soles done on boots in the past with some variations in the technique. One cobbler re-stiched the edging which is a nice true to original touch and glued the sole while another Cobbler just reglued the sole. Is the stitching really effective or more for looks? You see most boots where the threading is worn through on the bottom yet the sole is fine. Another variation is one Cobbler tapers the new half edge to meet the existing sole whereas another does not so there is a pronounced edge where they meet. A few times I've had to use contact cement since the tapered half soles was starting to separate. My favorite boots are Harness square toe boots and I still have several Frye Campus Boots from the '70s; like the block style heels. They sure don't make those like they used to. Problem back then were sizes over 12 were hard to find. As a size 13 (and now almost a 14), it is tough. Fortunately many of my size 13s stretched pretty well so they still fit but my feet better stop growing! Thanks..
Some still make them like they used to, but it is expensive to get well made boots. That's the nature of the beast. If stitching is done correctly, a lock stitch maintains a physical hold through half the thickness of the sole as the stitch should be locked in the center. Some do stitch half soles, some don't. I do.
I can almost buy a new pair for the price of a half sole and a partial heel if you are smart wen you get a new pair of boots they can put a thin piece of rubber on the bottoms of your boot to make them last and a little more traction also if your boots are to tight they can stretch them safely it’s a quite a bit they can stretch them the only stretch they can’t do is to make longer other than that they can widen them the shaft the top of the boot they can stretch them also and the vamp which is toe top of your foot so if ther to tight take to shoe repair and they will make them right for you
Question, I had a pair of boots that were resoled and I lost the width to the point it was too uncomfortable to wear anymore. I even had them put on a boot stretcher. Is that normal loosing the with everytime you resole your boots ?
It's not normal that means it's done wrong. Happened to me too. It's sad when that happens because they never fit the same and it takes forever to beak them in again. I would recommend leaving a review of the place somewhere online to warn others from using that cobbler. Sorry to hear about this Marty
Not particularly. Most cowboy boots are a type of construction called a Goodyear welt and different parts can be replaced. Eventually your foot may wear through the footbed inside. Sewing too many times on a welt will render it unusable, but these can all be replaced. Generally speaking, if the upper of a shoe or boot is good, it can be rebuilt.
It cost at least a hundred dollars to do your soles and heel s that’s in Canada so if you ask me it’s a waste of money if you are smart wen you get your new boots you take to cobbler and get a thin rubber sole over the leather then they are not going to wear I do it to every pair of boots it also makes them not so slippery your heels as soon as the fist piece of rubber gets to the leather part take them in then it is next to nothing to fix your boot wen the rubber wears down to leather go get it replaced with another thin piece of leather it will last at least a year and then you will not hav to resolve your boots
I live in canada too and new soles and heels are about $130.00 plus tax . I have had that rubber sole put over the leather sole and it really helps and is good in the snow and ice we get here . Love all the info I get from you and your followers .
No you can get the leather heels restocked and totally re-sold at the same time or one of the other next time put rubber on the soles so this way you won’t show up damn fucking soles, lol
So ur saying u wear boots out till when they r garbage then go ask somebody to make them wearable again and they do but u complain they dont fit the same? And they dont know what their doing? Although that's how they feed their family but yet u cant do ot at all? This is why I hate being a mechanic everybody can tell me how to do my job but they r bringing it to me instead and when it should of went to the scrap yard I made it drive again. Ok ok ok lol btw boots r cheaper to buy now days then to fix.
NOPE! That's not what I'm saying at all. If the boots fit worse, they did it wrong just like if a mechanic worked on a car and it drove worse, they fixed it wrong. People can have a job to feed their families but still make mistakes. There are levels of expertise that make some good at what they do and some bad. All boots are not cheaper to buy new than to fix. It all depends on the boot and I talk about this a lot on my channel. Feel free to watch some more so you see what I'm all about. Hope you have a good day! Cheers buddy
cowboy boots are high heels for men, plain and simple. unless your riding a horse every day, there is absolutely no reason to wear them. they are terrible for your feet, knees and back,.not to mention your balance
@@JeremiahCraig explain how i am wrong lol. ask any chiropractor, or ask prince if he was still alive (although he would deny it because he was invested in the image.of wearing.high heels just like people who wear cowboy boots are). wearing high heels is bad for you. you like them, thats fine its your choice, but dont try and justify wearing them from a practical standpoint. there is nothing practical about cowboy boots that dosent relate to riding a horse.
They are totally practical. They can last for decades, handle repairs well, they work in many different situations and they are only bad for your feet if you have the wrong size. They are actually really good for posture and joints. You're talking to the wrong people. Several doctors wear boots. People don't understand. Are 5 in heels bad for you? Sure. But 1.5 in works great. You'll come around
@@JeremiahCraig trying to justify high heeled pointy toed boots.....like i said if you like them more power to you but dont try to say they are practical lol. doctors dont know anything about musculoskeletal system lol, the best youll get from them is a perscription for muscle relaxers. actually we arent even ment to walk heel toe at all. how is lifting your heel up an inch and a half from its natural position going to help your joints? it throws everything out of allignment, tilts your pelvis forward, puts stress on your lower back,.etc. not to mention your toes being crunched into an un natural shape by the narrow toe. your body may have become used to this but it dosent mean they are good for you.
@@shonuffisthemaster Dude, it's not that dire. You make it seem like people are going top themselves i the hospital from wearing slightly elevated heels. This is not the case. If you have a weak core or a sedentary lifestyle but are still on your feet all the time, sure, it might have an impact. Other than that the effect will practically be unobserved.

Do you repair boots?
Why didn't you just go back to that first cobbler who did a great job?
Because I lived 3,000 miles away and didn't want to pay shipping
@@JeremiahCraig makes sense, hope you found a good cobbler!
Reheeling boots I'm learning not use to walking with new heels Ariat ventek😮😮😮😮😮😮
Hate Lester soles always get grip or vibram soles and no u can’t change toe shape and may make boot tad smaller and tighter to wear
All depends on the preference. I definitely can see how leather soles would be annoying
I need my soul repaired, knowaddamean? 😛
Take a shot every time he says resoles
Cheers buddy
cowboy boots are high heels for men, plain and simple. unless your riding a horse every day, there is absolutely no reason to wear them. they are terrible for your feet, knees and back,.not to mention your balance
wrong
Suggestion.with humor & sarcasm...or not..use the phrase "or else I'll come find you & put my/a blog up your ass"ie,subscribe or else, check out such & suchs boot shop ect .L8r
