    Good presentation. No waffling, no loud music. Just a delivery of how to check on dampness. Pleasure to watch. Others please take note!

    Hi Dan, another good video. One tip for your viewers, when you are checking along a window, make sure the probes don't touch the rubber seal. Touching the seal will give you a significantly higher and false reading.

    Do you not need to press the prongs in to the wall? I feel like if I just touch them on the outside I'm just measuring the moisture in the surface?

    A magic video. Well done, extremely informative to any vanner.

    Hi Dan. Good advice as usual. One thought I had about meters. The meters with the prongs are certainly ok for caravans with traditional wallboard. I’m no expert but I believe you need a different type of meter for more modern vans where the wallboard is plastic. I could be wrong. Steve.

    You eyes, nose and hands are the first things to use (I know you used your hands with the walls and upholstery). I gave our Lunar a good visual inspection when I went to view it and it had no evidence of any major damp issues. The damp meter will give you a better idea and you have explained it quite well taking into account the weather at the time of taking the readings.

    The prongs of the damp meter must penetrate the wallboard vinyl covering to get an accurate reading ,and even at that you will only get a surface reading of the plywood ,need to be pushed quite firmly I would suggest reading of 5-7% on a caravan to be unusual as perfectly dry timber is around 12%

      Hi Simon, Good point - As indicated in the video - these meters are really only good for "indicative" measuring only - measuring spikes is really all they are good for, they can be a nuisance in many cases also.
      Thanks

    on checking mine last weekend I've found damp as you open the door bit about an inch wide waist level down but no idea as to why because it's completely dry above thanks Dan always imformitiv

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  7 років тому

      Hi Ashly - DO have it checked if you are concerned. have a look outside, especially at waist height - does the outside panel have a join in it. if so, this could be the area that is recording "higher" than usual readings.

    Hi Great video, my property has had a major fire 6 months ago and since we had lots of heavy rain when a new roof has been fitted and sealed to stop water, a specialist company will be coming in to dry out my rooms. What reading do i need to see on a meter to know it’s moisture free and back to how it should be
    Thanks

    If you use a meter in the correct way and don’t jam the probes into the wallboard too hard, do you leave any marks or holes that are visible?

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  7 років тому

      Hi Rob, not really noticeable, sure they will leave small dents - but with the wall paper - you won't see them etc, and obviously don't push too hard !

    Hi, Dan please can you Advise, if I want to use my Caravan for Storage, Is It okay if I Cover The Inside Of The Floor, With A Tarpaulin On Top Of The Carpet. Or Will This Hold In Moisture and Make It Damp. Any Advice greatly appreciated. Thank You.

      @@TheTrudgians What 'wood' setting do you suggest for the new meter? Your older one seems to be set at tree type 1?

    If I could ask for some advice I have a motor home bought from new 14 month's ago I seem to have a small damp patch in the rear of my moto
    r home the dealer says to just keep a eye on it. The damp metre reads 1.6% but the rest of the motor home reads 0%. Is there any to worry about

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  5 років тому +1

      Hi Ivan, it would be wrong of me to suggest any course of action without seeing or having greater knowledge. I would however, strongly recommend you get a second opinion either from a mobile engineer or a separate dealership, just for peace of mind.

    Had Dan new caravans that have 10 year water ingress warranty aren't damp proof it just means the manufacturer will fix it under warranty as long as you comply with the t&c of your servicing schedule.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  7 років тому

      Good point, also second hand caravans from dealers will have a warranty of some description, where damp work can be covered also.

      Hi Gaëtan,
      Have a search on Amazon or eBay - there are loads of various types on there and at quite a reasonable price too. The one we used, is linked in the description.
      Hope that helps.

    I understand there is a " non-intrusive" damp-meter, ie...no sharp prongs...

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  6 років тому +1

      Hi, yes there are the types that work on capacitance, but these can be misleading when measuring for damp and you find a bit of structure, or metalwork. in that case, the engineer would revert to the prong type.
      Don't worry about leaving small holes, you really don't notice them, and with the wall coverings they kind of heal over anyway.

    After owning boats made of GRP the cabin windows recieve more abuse than caravan windows ever will see, why cant all caravans and Motorhomes be built the same way" I now want a motorhome ,it seems WINGHAM" are the only company to use GRP totaly" a material which enables fantastic designs.

    should be using a protimeter , and a capacitance meter for plastic walls

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  3 роки тому +1

      yep, spot on. These walls are wallboards, with metal strips inside so a capacitance reading could give an odd value. This is where knowledge of the construction of the caravan is pretty essential.

    Hello,
    I am one of your happy subscribers.
    Huge thanks for all your videos and advices.
    If you have a chance would you be able to advise me on one thing please.
    I’m looking to buy my first caravan and actually found one.
    It is 2015 Adrea Altea 552
    I have inspected the caravan today and actually very happy with all the bits except from reading for damp.
    This actually means that the caravan had a high reading of damp around 17-18% about the sink in the top cupboard.
    There is absolutely no any visual signs of damp whatsoever.
    Could you please advise me if this is a huge issue and shall I pull out of the deal?
    Many thanks
