Woke up this morning and thought, I'd like to learn a Doobie Brothers song. This is one of my all-time favorites, and with a quick UA-cam search this video came up. Flash forward a few hours and "Viola!" I can play it, all thanks to your awesome instruction! Thank you very much for a fantastic lesson!

Pat Simmons also one of my favorite guitar players, and The Doobie Brothers hands the best, better than the Eagles who I also like alot. Had the honor of meeting Pat of all places at the Costco in Maui. I looked at him, I took a double take and then bravely asked him if he was part of a very famous rock band, his reply was " have you ever heard of the Rolling Stones". We proceeded to chat it up, talking mostly with my struggles learning Clear as Driven snow, he launched into explaining the tuning....Made my day

I was a working musician at the time the Captain and Me came out playing 6 nights a week for over a year in a bar. I always enjoyed just listening to this song and never really thought about learning the acoustic part rather concentrating on the lead lines. But 40 years later, I will follow your direction and learn this song thanks to your video. One tends to take for granted the beauty of a composition while overlooking what technical skills were needed to create it.

Wonderful! Thank you for the tutorial. Much appreciated because I am not yet very comfortable with alternate tunings. When analyzing a song I know that when I come up with impossible finger patterns, I have to look for alternate tunings. I’m in the Netherlands so I was very fortunate to see The Doobie Brothers live twice in 2010 and uh… another year. Very happy I clicked on your tutorial!

Hey Dale, haven’t been here for some time. My health hasn’t been great, I had a recent brain surgery, but I wanted to drop you a line and let you know how much I enjoy listening and learning from you as we seem to have similar tastes in music. I’ve always loved the Doobies and this is one of my favorites so I remembered you covered it and decided I’d learn it from you. Simmons is an amazing musician and the Doobies are still amazingly strong. I saw them years ago when they came out with Toulouse Street and they opened for 3 Dog Night😇. I hope you are doing well health wise and prospering. LLB is still the best cover band to me and you are a big reason for that. I was in so much pain during the last surgery I actually begged the doctor to let me die, but it looks like God has some other reasons to let me live as I’ve suffered a heart stent and a brain stent. Thank you for your professional teaching and taking time to teach us simpletons. I can actually play wells, it’s just that I’m such an introvert I am uncomfortable playing alone and enjoy playing in a band rather than alone in front of others. I just learned Toulouse Street off this same album, another great song. I wish I could find a similar band like LLB to play with, you are really lucky to play with some amazing musicians. Take care, I hope I can see you guys live at some point. It would be a treat for me. You strike me as a very kind, down to earth talented guy. Take care Dale. God bless you and others who give their time and talents to others. Rob Johnson😇🙏🇺🇸🇺🇦

Hi Dale , Thank you, and it is an honor to get lessons from a Famous member of the great "Lexington Lab Band" (LLB ). I have always loved the music that Pat and Tom wrote. I remember buying the vynal "Captain And Me" album when it first came out. In my band we played Ukiah, and Dark eyed, was in the set too. Tiran Porter is so awesome on that album too. For each song you teach, you get the tone so good, that's why they call you the Tone Dr. I imagine. Try to find any clinics that Pat gives so you can meet him. .try harder to make it happen Bro. I was Blessed to meet Gary Rossington from Skynyrd in a hotel lobby in a non rushed situation before they were getting on the bus to go do a show. I told Gary that even though I'm a Bass player , I bought my first Les Paul because of him, and he got a kick out of that. Then when we were done chatting, I whipped out my Skynyrd's "First and Last " album for him to sign. Gary's signature readable just like he learned to write in school, No rockstar BS signature, down to earth just like Mr. Rossington himself... A great Man. R.I.P. now with the Lord of lords and the King of kings in Heaven.

hello Trish! I'm SO jealous - sorry to hear about the loss but Mr Simmons is a huge influence and hero of mine and if i could meet any guitarist, and i've met a few, he's the one. I don't know that it will ever happen - been to a bunch of shows and just can't get to him. If you see him again tell him he has a huge fan in KY:) SCML is an all time fave of mine and interestingly enough i played it at a funeral about a month ago at the request of the family. Hope all is well, your friend, dale.

The only thing l'm having an awful time with is getting my pinkie on the 10th fret B string with the 7th fret barre in the middle of the verse. For whatever reason l can't seem to master 4 fret stretches. If l turn my hand too far under the neck, l'm unable to barre the high E string. Fantastic lesson, regardless!
