Got out of prison 4 months ago, bought a new Breedlove and started practicing. Never thought I'd have the skill to play this song...but you got me there..a 40 yr. long, hard knock journey...and a dream has finally come true. I agree, this artist coincidentally appeared in my life the exact same day he passed away, I was introduced to King Crimson and I immediately started researching Greg Lakes life after listening to their first album.. I could already feel how important the loss was for progressive rock culture. "From the beginning" was the first song I heard from Emerson, Lake and Palmer and I was completely captivated by their sound. You have always taught songs I´ve loved, form Led Zep, to Steely Dan, and now ELP. Now that I have the chance, Thank you for being the best guitar teacher on the internet, I really enjoy and appreciate all the work you put into your lessons, I really get to learn a lot and not only about how to play guitar! This whole comment was meant to ask if you could look into the guitar solo in this song, but I often just digress when I talk about good music! After all I learned from you I could probably get it if I listen to it many times with my guitar in hand.. but it´s so much easier to learn it from you... only if you feel it´s worth the time. I saw Greg in concert with ELP in the early 70’s in their heyday his sound on bass was as clear as a bell...and switched between Bass and guitar effortlessly Live,.. an amazingly talented musician, sad when he passed also.

As a novice guitarist, I truly appreciate your attention to detail. So many teachers on UA-cam are posting videos with incorrect chording. Good intentions aside, why would someone do that? I'm not at this level of playing, but I'm working on it and you help me aspire to greater things than the typical open chords and strumming patterns. You're thorough without yammering on, precise without coming across as pedantic. There's just enough note theory to expand my brain, but not overload it. I don't mean to embarrass you with praise, but I feel the need to underscore why your videos mean so much to me.
When I can play this song exactly like that and sing it as well, I will know I have arrived. I too am not at this level yet but I have more time on my hands and hope to start working on it and see how it goes. Excellent video very easy to understand and very well explained.

Greg Lake is just an amazing guitarist and you did a wonderful job with this tutorial! Emerson Lake & Palmer made some unforgettable songs back in the day. It's hard to believe prior to forming Emerson Lake & Palmer he was singer/bassist for King Crimson's iconic album In the Court of the Crimson King.
Andy is by far the best and most meticulous teacher EVER on the web, he really is. There is no one better to learn from, I'll guarantee it. His skills and willingness to spend the time are the absolute best.

I was 7 years old in 72’. I remember my older brother had Trilogy and we would listen to it over and over. This must have become part of my DNA, because whenever I’m noodling on guitar I inevitably find my way to these chords. It’s just natural. I often wonder how we got from ELP as popular music to where we are now. Greg Lake’s vocals were a huge part of ELP.
When i started finding chords by ear i picked out Eagles Hotel California main part. I think its in the DNA. I never had a teacher and i still cant remember whole songs just noodle out one. I play better with others. Now learnig lead somewhat at 61 young.

By the way... I have been playing the guitar for 45 years (I'm 59). I had to learn all these songs (including this one) by ear or with the help of friends who played better than I did. You have the best guitar lesson vids of anybody on UA-cam. As somebody said earlier... Same age as Sir Winston and learned the same way. There were only a couple albums I owned twice, this is one. Dropping that little diamond needle on your favorite parts to learn took it's toll. I had to get another copy of this just for enjoyment. Thankfully Maxell metal tapes showed up and saved a big pile of vinal from the scratchies.
I tried to figure this out about a year ago. You have straightened me out and now after watching your lesson and practicing 10 days or so I've almost got it, or at least there is hope. Sorry, I didn't catch your name, but you are a born and delightful teacher. I have looked at many guitar lessons on youtube and turn them off by the second minute with a migraine, as they all like to hear themselves talk. Then there are the analyzers. From one guitarist to another, you are gifted.
The way this song is played with the guitar is simply awesome. He created some beautiful songs with how he played. You can really watch how he picks on his guitar. You do a fantastic job of demonstrating and yes, his picking was fast. I do not play the guitar at all but I love this song due to how the guitar is played. I like to watch him play and pick real fast to get that beautiful sound.
Not that anyone's particularly interested, but I started to learn guitar roughly 55 years ago. When bands were groups and albums were LPs. I've taught a lot of people and learned from many more and this guy has just presented the best demonstration I've ever seen. This is a guitarist explaining to other guitarists and not treating them like fools or geniuses. Spot on.

Not surprisingly , I've been playing the song WRONG for nearly 15 years.....I swear , the whole tablature market has done a lot of disservice to guitarists over the years.... It's a shame there was no UA-cam back in the 80's when I was first learning to play... But this a great lesson - as always - because THIS is HOW you actually play the song correctly AND THAT makes all the difference, to me , at least... Great lesson, great song - as always. For those people who dislike this, they are playing the guitar backwards or don’t have the talent and perseverance to practice. Pretty stupid if you think this isn’t one of the best teachers on you-tube. He’s patient, smart and passionate about his teaching! Go to a different teacher and see if they are better than this gentleman…do it go on. You’ll see or maybe just give up and try an easier song until you reach our level. Good luck beginners!
It's really great. The lick before the solo, that timing is just so cool once you get it. It makes you think how incredible Greg Lake was to have come up with it. You really nailed it, because it's a little buried in the mix on the record.
First started playin this in the early 80"s and still havent perfected it. Back in the day I'd have to listen to songs as they came on the radio and figure out a little more each and every time. Same with lyrics. Relearning songs correct can be a task to counter old mussle memory...
I can't thank you enough. I'm an old man (66) and I've been messing around playing my acoustical guitars for a long time. Of course there are some genres or some songs that may be more complex or differently toned, but it is still art nonetheless. The fact that you find value in those genres doesnt mean they're its not music. I got my first guitar at Christmas 1980 when I was 14 (an Encore cherry sunburst Gibson Les Paul Custom copy). I used to listen to the radio on real low all night as I slept. The local rock station in Phoenix would always play this all the time in the middle of the night. It's one of those songs that is great to hear when you're laying in bed half asleep at three in the morning. Such warm memories. Thank you for posting this.

I was a high school freshman in '72. When I heard the acoustical guitar Greg Lake picked so beautifully I fell in love with the instrument.
I was blind on mescaline/pot when heard it on triad fm radio chgo. which is probably why I don't play guitarra

Not surprisingly , I've been playing the song WRONG for nearly 15 years.....I swear , the whole tablature market has done a lot of disservice to guitarists over the years....
It's a shame there was no UA-cam back in the 80's when I was first learning to play...
But this a great lesson - as always - because THIS is HOW you actually play the song correctly
AND THAT makes all the difference, to me , at least...

For those people who dislike this, they are playing the guitar backwards or don’t have the talent and perseverance to practice. Pretty stupid if you think this isn’t one of the best teachers on you-tube. He’s patient, smart and passionate about his teaching! Go to a different teacher and see if they are better than this gentleman…do it go on. You’ll see or maybe just give up and try an easier song until you reach our level. Good luck beginners!

It's really great. The lick before the solo, that timing is just so cool once you get it. It makes you think how incredible Greg Lake was to have come up with it. You really nailed it, because it's a little buried in the mix on the record.
First started playin this in the early 80"s and still havent perfected it. Back in the day I'd have to listen to songs as they came on the radio and figure out a little more each and every time. Same with lyrics. Relearning songs correct can be a task to counter old mussle memory...
Greg is absolutely a top musician, multi-instrumentalist coming from King Crimson prior to ELP.
I can't thank you enough. I'm an old man (66) and I've been messing around playing my acoustical guitars for a long time. This is one of my favorite songs and I was close...but because of you...I'm now spot on. Not only are you a talented player...but you elucidate extremely well. Of course there are some genres or some songs that may be more complex or differently toned, but it is still art nonetheless. The fact that you find value in those genres doesnt mean they're its not music. Come on, open yourself, accept that well, times are changing and you may not like the new things but that doesn't make them less and neither does it make you less. I love this song and I love this type of older music, but it doesn't mean I can't enjoy today's stuff. Think about it, people before YOUR time said this kind of music sucked, and that it wasn't music and yet here we are. Don't you see? We can all be happy, there's no need for this type of judgement.

I got my first guitar at Christmas 1980 when I was 14 (an Encore cherry sunburst Gibson Les Paul Custom copy). I used to listen to the radio on real low all night as I slept. The local rock station in Phoenix would always play this all the time in the middle of the night. It's one of those songs that is great to hear when you're laying in bed half asleep at three in the morning. Such warm memories. Thank you for posting this.

I only see 13 dislikes but even 1 is assinine for such a great song taught by the best teacher and the most accurate I’ve seen here or anywhere else. I would like to see anyone match Andy’s accuracy and note for note accuracy’s, just ain’t gonna happen as they say. . I’ve played long enough i don’t need lessons but I enjoy Andy’s teaching skills and just check in to make sure I haven’t forgotten some old skills. Keep up the amazing lessons Andy.
