The Castaways are an American rock band from the Twin Cities in Minnesota, United States.
Their first and only hit single was "Liar, Liar". Written by band leader James Donna and drummer (and band co-founder) Dennis Craswell, the song was produced by Timothy D. Kehr and released by Soma Records, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1965. "Liar, Liar" was later featured in the films Good Morning, Vietnam and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and was covered by Debbie Harry in Married to the Mob. The Castaways performed "Liar, Liar" in the 1967 beach movie It's a Bikini World. Their followup, "Goodbye Babe", was another local hit, but did not break nationally.
Although the group released several more singles throughout the 1960s, it appears that they never released a full-length album, until the appearance of their 1999 Greatest Hits compilation.
One of the all time best songs ever recorded. It's just good.
I'm going to see them tonight. They still going around the Twin Cities area every year. The only one left in the group is James Donna. Great guy!!
agree 100%
A lot of these mid 60's psychedelic/ surfie tunes I couldn't put a name to but have them in my DNA somehow, I was just turning 4 years old when this came out, still love the magical energy of this song, thank goodness we have YT. 😀
this new deathgrips collab sounds amazing
The Castaways hail from Richfield Minnesota with their signature song "Liar,Liar"
the only other Minn. hit from that era was Surfin' Bird by The Trashmen. Endearing because parents hated it.
I LIVED IN RICHFIELD WTF
I was 16/17 in 1965 having been born in September of 1948. I very much enjoyed this song but my band didn't perform it at the teen clubs where we played probably because we didn't have anyone to sing that high but as a lot of teens in my generation I did enjoy it.
His son (Jeff Donna) was my shop teacher in high school. Awesome guy.
This was one of my old man's records. Remember listening to it with him and my brothers when we were kids. Good memories.
Such a cool tune. This perfectly defines that eras sound.
Sung this song to my ex wife. liar liar pants on fire all the way to court.
These guys managed to put it all together in that one song -- simple, fun lyrics, a garage beat, cool organ backdrop, that intense, haunting repeating guitar riff (looks like the guy played it on his ES335, as we see in the vid), the falsetto -- very distinctive but catchy. Sort of garage, sort of psychedelic... Too bad it was their only hit, but, hey, it was a hit! Made it on the Nuggets compilation, where I heard it the most, as I enjoyed that collection of US garage / psych 60's hits.
Same! im glad nuggets keeps bands like this alive for my generation (Z) to hear
Wow I was 15 when that song was popular in 1965. Brings back so many great memories.
That scream before the breakdown is everything. Aaaahhooooo! Lock, Stock and Two Smoking barrels put me on to this and it was so well used in that film, along with allnthenother music.
I wanna be your dog was used perfectly in lock stock.
Can't say just why but , this groovy tune has a kind of " spooky " sound to it . Good video , great recording .
My auntie used to play this on her phonograph all the time when I was little rest in peace auntie
Just taking a break and listening to a local Christian station WJMJ 88.9 in Connecticut. i’ve heard this song before, many a time, but it really hit me. What a great pop tune this is! When I looked it up here, it was really fun to watch the gogo dancer. It reminded me of a strip joint I went to, and she kind of had those moves! I remember it to this day because she was so talented. I’ve never seen a girl dance like that before. As years progressed these girls at the strip joints never danced at all. Thanks for the memories, and these guys definitely had a moment! I can’t believe that this song is less than two minutes. It really blows me away! 😊
Thursday, Sept. 23, 1965, was the day The Castaways
filmed It’s a Bikini World at the Haunted House in Los Angeles.
The stage was the strangest that I had ever seen. The band set
up in what looked like a monster’s mouth, with big white fangs
hanging down in front. All four of us dressed up in matching
red jackets with white turtlenecks. We lip-synched “Liar, Liar”
as usual, and the producers did have a couple microphones on
stage to make it look real. A beautiful young actress, Carolyn
Brandt, danced the whole segment in front of the stage
Many, many props to you and the band!
Your comment seems authentic. That must have been a mindblower being through that whole scene! The parties, music, weed, girls, tv, movies. I wish I had joined a band in the old days. I've improved my guitar playing over the years and I get a kick out of playing covers of the oldies at open mics. Once I had an electric guitar, after 30 years of acoustic, my abilities really took off. I even wrote a couple of songs. It's great to be in the music biz! You guys were the top of that genre. Good work!
@@kentclark6420 Thanks-it was lot of fun! As I wrote in my book: "It was the Golden Age of Rock and Roll."
The first time I heard this song was on a radio station about 7 years ago when I was working the night shift at a service desk. I then went to look for it on UA-cam and I must have listened to it a hundred times over and over again for the rest of my shift.
I understand that Sid Haig appeared in a scene just before this part of the movie. I also met him in person at a Comic Con a number of years ago. He's a very funny and very nice man.
A tip of the hat to you, Sir.
I remember this film Tommy Kurt is trying to prove that he’s better than Debra Wally and Big Daddy asks him to come down to the haunted house for some reason and they get to watch the castaways and the go-go dancer and some dude in the background gets into it. And everybody looks at him and he gets embarrassed.
I was 12 in 65 remember listening to this on the radio man we had some great music back then
We sure did! I was 11.
I was 11. We are the lucky ones 😉👌
I was 12 and this reminds me of the State Fair
I was 14 when this hit the charts...they did what all of us garage bands wanted so much to do but never got to....honor to whom honor is due ! I salute them for their achievement !!! we all fell in love with this girl that danced !
Great song from a great time long ago. And Carolyn Brandt was a real beauty. A one in a million girl…
The dancer is Carolyn Brandt, wife of Ray Dennis Steckler
The lead singer had a great range & the scream part way through caught your attention. I never remembered anything other than the first verse, but in my 60s I still remember this song. ❤️
Love the song and the hot dancer but I came for the scream @ 0:51! 😎
They don’t play stuff like this anymore i miss it
love that guitar part after each verse
These young cats are savage.
✨ I never tire of this song, i just *keep playing it on a loop* & love it more the more i play it.
One of my favorites from my teenage years in the 1960's!!
I remember when I first heard this song in the 80s I was about seventeen, and I kept getting the feeling I was here before in a past life it felt so strange, I was born in 1968 so it must have been a reason why I felt like that. Love this song.
Your parents were probably listening to it. I was born in 1965, the same year this song came out; the 1st time I remember hearing it was in 1974 because it was on my K-Tel 40 Funky Hits album. Good times! ROCK-N-ROLL!!!
I was born a year earlier. This is the first time I have seen the group. I read babies can hear music in their mom's womb, who knows.
@@drivinsouth651 I had the same thought. As a baby you can absorb a lot of music and philosophy. This song was still being played on the radio after his birth.
I always liked this song from the time it came out. I still enjoy it. Their only hit and it was played on many stations for years.
Groovy far out song of 1965, I was born in December 1966
Brought back great memories. That high pitched singer🗣️ , the guy screaming....and someone's " Aunt GiGi' in a bikini doing the "Jerk". 😊🎵
Just heard this on The Five...totally forgot about this song😂
Omg I was watching the five as well. I went to UA-cam and found this song. I know the song but totally forgot about it. I swear it was in one of guy ritchies movies.
@@Elsie-ek8rb love The Five & their playlist
@@ravendixon1099For sure...their usually spot on with their music except when they use current music and then I have no clue who it is. LOVE THE FIVE❤
I also heard this song on The Five! I remember it very clearly from when I was a kid. I forgot about it, too. Great 1960s throwback tune! 😍
That's where I heard it too
I wish this version was on spotify, I love the quality of this version over than the standard. Just has a fresher vibe to it than a less enthusiastic sounding studio release.
On the side note, man, that Go-Go Dancer is so hypnotic to watch..
Have heard it today on Rockabilly-Radio...!!!
My Uncle is Richard Hensley one of the brothers of Roy Hensley the guitarist. I just talked to Dick earlier today.
I didn’t know this song by listen as I was born in late in 1967 but I remember my uncle talking about the band and his brother in it so I’ve heard it a few times over the years.
Was surprised it was in the movie Good Morning Vietnam.
I'm 12 years old, but I love the Castaways band.I like not only this song but also many others (goodbye babe, sam, should happen to me,a man's gotta be a man, girl in love, girl don't tell me,jenny take a ride, shake, shake, shake) it's a pity that this band is not popular, the songs are very cool :(
It's the Mrs doubtfire scream that gets me 😂
I feel like I'm watching a bit from Austin Powers. Shaggadelic Baby !!!!
Oh Be....have...😊
Real music!
That's one stone groove, my brothers!!
Up with the kinks in 1965
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrel. The dest song!!!
Rewatching it right now and reached this song 😁.
Cool vibe still in 2023!
Very psychedelic! 🥰✌🏻❤
This was before psychedelic music.
According to Wikipedia, the song is considered "garage rock" and/or "proto-punk", which seems about right to me.
@Milesco who cares? Great tune.
Groovy baby...yeah! Shaggadelic righteous music for all us baby bongers! Loved that time in music. Feel good and far out on a soundwave of love!!!❤
Awesome sounds, stands out in your memory.
Groovey
Just seen these guys at a car show in chaska Minnesota…
Outstanding.
Timeless tunes.
I first heard this song from a record I had bought at a garage sale (or thrift store) in the mid-1980s for one dollar . It was a CHEAp n' cheesy "24 Greatest Hits of the 1960s" with this badly drawn abstract cover of 1960s "teens" dancing . It was almost "cubistic" with blue and pink colors . But THIS masterpiece was on there with "Kind of a Drag" and "Turn Down Day" and other "popcorn rock" tracks . Had the record for YEARS during my "punk" phase .
Classic ❤

Great old song. I was 6 years old when this came out, and the The falsetto voice scared me, I called the song "The Scary Song" 😂

Гай Ричи - гений😺👍
A garage band from Minneapolis, Minnesota
Groovy, dude.
Great
Siempre❤️
[Chorus]
Liar, liar, pants on fire
Your nose is longer than a telephone wire
[Verse 1]
Ask me, baby, why I'm sad
You been out all night, know you been bad
Don't tell me different, know it's a lie
Come kill me, honey, see how I cry
[Verse 2]
Why must you hurt me, do what you do
Listen here, girl, can't you see I love you
Make a little effort, try to be true
I'll be happy, not so blue
[Scream]
[Chorus]
Verse 3:
If you keep on tellin' me those lies
Still goin' out with other guys
There'll come a day I'll be gone
Take my advice, won't be long
Verse 4:
When that day comes, won't be mad
Be free of you, but I'll still be sad
In spite of your cheatin', still love you so
I'll be unhappy if I let you go
[Chorus]
Lookin over my shoulder
I first heard that song liar liar from the tv spot and theatrical trailer of married to the mob
Covered by Debbie Harry 💘
I love this music

And I thought all these years the high pitch voice was a woman-🤦

Our lead guitar player, Bob Folschow, sang the falsetto part!
Me too
A black womanly at that.
@@jamesdonna7673so cool!!

The dancer kind of reminds me of Betty Paige
The dancer is Carolyn Brandt, 24 years old here, and wife at that time of Ray Dennis Steckler a horror actor and director.
Carolyn Brandt, actress, dancing.

Yes kids... there was a time when telephones were connected via wire... connected to rotary dial phones.
My grandma had one, and I miss those. People today don't even talk to each other anymore.

Which came first-the expression or the song?
Кадзима геней
Drummer looks 15 years old.
Probably because he is. Fun fact: that's his mom, dancing in the bikini.
I'm not sure that's correct@@notever_everytime5074 .
The dancer's name is Carolyn Brandt who was born in 1940. That makes her about 27 years old when this clip was filmed. She had two daughters and no sons.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolyn_Brandt
The drummer does look young enough to be her son though!
And he co-wrote Liar Liar.... His name; Dennis Craswell
Wow! Love this! Check out Debbie Harry’s version, it’s fantastic!
