It's evident that this master programmed so many patches in a "musical content" unlike the most of the other wannabee synth UA-camrs, i feel like i'm watching a 5 star michelin chef giving a tutorial about how to chop onions. Thanks for sharing.
Thing is he’s literally sitting there explaining every minute detail and nuance of the synthesizers frequencies to create those sounds. That is the sign of a true Grand Master. These wanna be’s and rookies just play sounds and move sliders without really understanding the process but will talk as though they really know what they’re doing. This man understands the science of sound design and how to precisely get what he needs out of a synthesizer. That’s the difference in skill level when you’re watching a seasoned veteran that isn’t just pushing sliders and twisting knobs but moving them for a specific reason. I wish I could one day have such an ability but I myself am just a slider pusher.
It's not that hard to understand the whole circuit and the techincalities and frequencys in the 2600. Actually. What Anthony has is ears and experience.
I mean THIS is the kind of person ANYONE should learn from. A proper legend of music. Not some 18 year old influencer. great work Anthony! You should make a workshop class. Id attend it!
There are a lot of really talented young people out there. But tbh can’t have the experience of this man. Not saying they don’t have any experience..some people are just naturally gifted and have the knack like natural born talent..so they got a head start to begin with, but when it comes to the wisdom of musical arrangement when you clearly started with the gift…I mean decades of musical wisdom you can’t beat it.. no pun haha😅 I don’t think even naturally gifted people can naturally know everything, I think there are certain things you can only learn by experimentation and working with music for a long time.
Wow. You have just totally deconstructed not just electronic drums but also what makes a real drum sound. The minute you added white noise it went from electronic to real. Incredible. Watching the whole thing again now...
Those were the cleanest kicks I’ve heard. You should make a sample pack of processed kicks mixed through all that gear you have. I would definitely buy it and have it in my top sample packs
the 2600.... bruh gimme all that stuff ill throw all my elektron set up into the garbage (apart my moog's ) *** seems modded too .... *** and i do not talk about the garfield , pedals and synths behind his back ....
I've learned more about synths in one 6:30 video than any other resources out there! So glad I cam across and subscribed to Anthony's channel - absolute gold.
I have been taking a digital sound synthesis class at my college and your channel has been a huge help understanding the practical applications and practices on hardware. I use VCV Rack for everything I do right now, but I would love a classic analog synth at some point.
Another master class from a legend many didnt even know about until this channel dropped on UA-cam. I would love to see how the bass was done on "Wanna Be Starting Something". Another killer groove on Thriller.
Nice to see the ARP making kick sounds. Vince Clarke also used to create his own kicks with the System 700. You can get a more personal sound creating your own sounds rather than using stock library samples.
What i love about modern software is that you can zoom in on the wave file and just normalise the attack of the kickdrum however you'd like, no need for compression or limiting or transient designers, when you can control it yourself exactly how you want! The impact of a kickdrum is very important, and the duration of the highend energy aswell! Bad Kicksamples tend to have less highend duration. Cause that's what cuts tru the mix in the end "the noise" on the top of the oumph. You need at least 15milliseconds of noise highend layered into your lowend sample. If we are talking a modern kickdrum sound, that is! Experimenting with sharp high-hat sounds, or long reverb tails or equed white-noise reverb tails is a good place to start, and using a spectrum analyzer is a must to study the curve of good samples! It's actually quite funny creating your own kicksamples from scratch once you start doing it. I was obsessed some years ago! VST BazzISM is greate for that lowend fundamental!
I would love for you do demo what that Sherman Filter II can do with drums (for the sake of those who haven't heard just how beautiful and complex it can be).
I'm incredibly thankful for your guide to Kicks here. I'm trying to design a way to make kicks through synthesis within my DAW and a lot of people just push specific software to make basic kicks. What I want to do Is edit these core values on the fly with automation within the DAW and this was the deep knowledge that I needed to get me on designing it. Thank you.
It also helps if your synths envelope generator is not sluggish in the attack. Preferably an envelope generator with an exponential slope and not linear (meaning the attack will initially raise much quicker). FM and ring modulation can also be beneficial for drums sounds in general (more for the sounds with more high frequency content in them).
I was looking for a resource on creating drum sounds on the 2600 months ago. Thank you for this and explaining the theory behind how to construct the sound. The amount of flexibility that you have when doing it this way is jaw dropping.
anthony you are a living legend and a real goldmine for us in late 90's i used to make the same with cs5 .the chain was cs5 ,alesis 3630 compressor and the akai s900 sampler.i tried last week the same with beri ms1 with very good results. god bless
Thank you very much for inspiring us. Showing this on a semi modular synth shows the „how“ and makes it easy to replicate your approach on many different systems. 👍
I use hardware synths and already know how to synthesize drum sounds, but this quick demo was right up my alley, especially in terms of concise communication to someone who isn't a beginner. I've been doing this to create samples with all of my synths lately and it's super fun. It has shown me how some synths are harder to get certain drum sounds on. After watching this I think I'm going to revisit the Arp Odyssey! Thanks again.
Wowwww. I have a 2600 . I do make kicks with it but I use the filter and envelope to get my kick. I do sample the kick to get it consistent . The way you do yours is amazing. I was trying to copy your patch and no luck. Can you post the patch setting? Subbed❤❤❤❤❤❤
Update: I tried it on my JU-06a (which unfortunately doesn’t have triangle or sine, so let’s sub-square it!), with the noise trick… oh my god it WORKS!!!! Thanks again!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
The other problem was that this synth doesn’t modulate the pitch with the envelope, so I tricked it by using a sawtooth wave on the LFO modulating the pitch, it does the trick (as limited as it is, you gotta set the release of the sound to match the end of the descending saw LFO but anyway.) thanks again!!!
This technique can be applied to things in Ableton or even to samples on something like Digitakt; its really about applying the envelope to a sound source. For Ableton, consider doing exactly this same technique with a raw square or triangle with an envelope. I'm mostly using a Moog DFAM but this also still applies to add even more crazy to it.
Basic analog bass drum sound design on my old computer is easier to me, just pick a sine wave with it's 220Hz frequency, adding pitch bend (from 220Hz to 50Hz to 40Hz at last) and fade out, cropping 420 millisecond soundtrack (processed analog bass drum synthesis), removing unneccesary soundtrack (such as sine wave) and.... Done! Tips may be complex but the process is just simple and easier than butter.
Great video! When making kicks on 2600 style synths I'm generally running the kick into the pre-amp prior to the output mixer for extra saturation. Audio-rate mod of the filter can add some spice to these type of sounds as well.
This is great! Gonna try it on my ARP2600 tonight! I remember Giorgio Moroder saying he couldn't get a good kick drum from his Moog/ARP when making I Feel Love so he used a real drummer for that back in the day... so it's somewhat surprising how quick you were able to dial it in! Nice job... love it. Would also be interesting to hear how you go about snares...
Other synth UA-camrs (salesmen) just sad compared to Anthony. Gotta come to this channel for the real knowledge. But who wants that anyway? People just want to be sold the dream. I hope he can grow his channel for the enthusiasts. 🇮🇹♥️
Ive been experimenting like this and was quite pleased with myself when I got a low conga pitched an octave down then pitch bent down quickly after the initial attack on my RX7 to get a kick drum that’s punchier than the actual kick sounds so it almost sounds like an 909
I have a technical question concerning the 'klick' sound of the kick in the upper frequencies. How is it achieved? Does the klick happen mainly because of the short ADSR values? How does the pitch sweep come into play? Should I filter the noise as well? LP, HP, or BP? I get that it depends on what sound of a kick you want to achieve, but I do miss this typical upper klick in those synthesised kicks. Open for discussion!
When you listen at the set of drum samples available in Ableton, you can definitely tell that some where generated by this method. This method is pretty cool, because you can customize your drums to your style of music =)

BIG facts
There are 18 year olds out there making better music than you ever will 🙂
He forgot anthony himself was around 22 when he produced the beats for “thriller” 😃
I agree :)

I was working on a synth drums bank with my Roland JU-06A last week, and today’s my birthday….. makes sense! Thank you Master of the Synths!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Congratulations, mister!
This channel is getting better and better. Many thanks maestro!
Another priceless tutorial by the master himself! Thanks, Anthony!
