Same. I was just looking at the SNOW company and *most* of the reviews were 5 stars. The electric toothbrush is on sale, well, all their products are on sale, but if the light doesn't do anything, why get it?
As a prothodontics specialist i totally agree..I tell my pacients to save their money and do a custom tray for at home bleaching.Nice to see dr Nejad explaining this so beatifuly👍
Wow so helpful. I’ve just bought a kit with loose trays to wear 20 mins per day for a few days. With a light, which I will ditch. The overnight version looks great.
Regarding the "light-activated" peroxide at 2:13, peroxides are quite unstable molecules and exposure to radiation will degrade the peroxide (turn it into water and oxygen in case of hydrogen peroxide). The free oxygen atom may or may not react with your teeth. On the other hand, when the peroxide oxidizes directly your teeth, that oxygen atom will be used in the reaction that whitens your teeth. I haven't conduced research on this, but the theory tells me that using a light to break down peroxides will yield uncertain results, compared to not using a light.
Excellent video Doc! One question, the protocol you use in your cases includes one day off from the whitening tray to diminish the chances of suffering from hypersensitivity, after 2 days wearing them overnight. My question is: how many cycles of on-and-off do you usually recommend the patient follows to achieve your treatment goals? For a period of 2-3 weeks? Thanks in advance!
Completely up to the patient and how much whitening they want to achieve. Typical is 2-4 weeks, but some times 2-3 months. Remember that results are progressive so its not 2-3 months until you see results, just gradual improvement over time.
Excellent video. Explanation and advice on proper products and procedures. Question . How do you think mixing toothpaste and hydrogen peroxide then put mixture into a tray would work?

The $99 dental clinic service made no difference to my ivories. Whitening paste also not enough. Now doing water flosser and sodium chlorite mouth wash with added FG peppermint oil. The next step will be this method. Short cuts don't work well. Slow & steady wins again
In the video I explain that Hydrogen peroxide is active for ~30 min, but Carbamide peroxide is active for ~10 hours. The time also varies with the concentration.
HinDoc. This made so much sense and unfortunately i fell for the light activating gel gimmick :/ i would order gladly these custom trays from you but i live in Germany. Do you have any recommendations or can you say what round a bout a normal price for these trays is? thank you!
Yes you can but results vary due to the material and design of the trays. They are for different purposes. I have seen patients use the trays effectively sometimes, but most of the time it is ineffective and leads to gum irritation. This is because aligner trays usually do not extend down to the gumline. Aligner trays are also hard and do not form a nice suction seal at the gumline. If you try it, do it for an hour or so max and ensure your gums are not turning white or getting irritated. I would personally recommend you wait until you are done with aligners and get a good set of bleaching trays. Recently, I helped Sprintray (a 3D printer company specialized in dentistry) started producing dental models with a perfect design to make excellent bleaching trays. That means you can ask your dentist about that, but they may not have the 3D printer.
Dang. I was unfortunately expecting a sale's pitch. And, yeah, the offering is there. But how wholesome and helpful this information was. Looks like the sparing practice of baking soda and peroxide is effective.

I got custom trays but it doesn't cover that great on the lower teeth, the gel seems to go to the tips of the teeth. For the upper teeth it works great. Any tips to use it better? Or should I complain to my dentist?
Try complaining :) unfortunately most trays are lousy. I worked with a 3D printing company called Sprintray to help provide access to high quality trays for other dentists but few are using this technology at the moment.
The real M.V.P. Thank you for an honest video! Can you make a review on different whitening products like Crest 3D toothpaste 2 step system, SNOW, etc.? Also, can you make a review on different electric toothbrushes including the SNOW one ? I notice too many positive reviews on some of these brands. I would purchase through an affiliate link if you recommend a good toothbrush.
While I can't comment on any whitening agents. I can comment on an awesome toothbrush. I purchased a Diamondclean 9700, over 4 years ago and it still is performing like the day I purchased it. I picked mine up on black friday at Kohls, but after checking the price, they are the same now that I paid on sale then- besides the little bit I got back in Kohls cash. I drink sodas and don't eat much candy and my teeth are in great shape; even my dental hygienist says that my build up is much less than other patients that she sees. If you do pick one up, make sure you purchase the black plastic replacements(when you eventually need them). The white ones, from like Costco, really aren't the best, nor do they have a proper fit. Lest I forget, my wife and I share the same base and use it every day. We charge the device, maybe once a week, we only do that because we feel that it needs a charge, not because it dies. Good luck friend.
hey doc i have a question (might be a dumb one but oh well) so when you say to wear the trays for 2 nights then one night no, does that mean i have to wear them for two weeks while doing that cycle?
how do we tell our dentists we don't want to do the treatment with the light (mine offers it with the light) and that we would prefer just skipping to at home custom trays?
Carbamide Peroxide with custom trays does not damage enamel. Studies show it lowers the hardness in laboratory studies, but no clinical significance has been observed, and likely the hardness is restored with time. Its considered very safe.
You mentioned these are silicone custom trays (to sleep in overnight). If I am calling a dentist do I ask for a specific brand or just ask for an overnight silicone tray?
Ask for custom whitening trays. Some people make them better than others. Ive thought about making a service for this but it requires a high quality digital scan and screening from a dentist so I think it would be too difficult.
It actually changes the color. It oxidizes the chromatic component of tooth structure and ultimately lightens the shade, somewhat like bleaching does to color compounds in clothing.
@@BiomimeticDentistry thanks for the answer, as I was curious as I would like my teeth a bit whiter, but I dont want to use a product that only covers teeth with soem white chemical, as to me that is like putting hair dye or make up on.
I don't know what you mean. It depends on the gel but usually with the gels I would recommend, you don't do cycles. They are active for up to 10 hours so you would just wear it for 2 or more hours, but thats not for any gel so it depends on what you have. Unfortunately, it is not a universal application protocol.
Is this safe for sensitive teeth or will I regret it for the rest of my life? (Kinda like when I fried my hair with some bleach based hair product and it never grew back the same.) I don't need super bright white teeth, I just want to not wince every time I see myself in a video or picture. (So 2 or 3 shades lighter.) EDIT: By "this," I mean the custom tray Carbamide Peroxide treatment. Maybe I should do like 5%... I'm so worried, I'm always let down by people who are supposed to be professional. I can only trust myself to take care of myself. Maybe I would even start with like 3% and do it over night, then wait a couple weeks and repeat... hmm... we'll see.
Hey. This is the safest method available but there are conditions that definitely contribute to sensitivity like recession and abfraction. Everyone is different. We always manage to whiten and find a protocol that is tolerable when a patient is committed. I am Not aware of commercially available 3% or 5% carbamide peroxide teeth whitening gels. If you are really sensitive, there may be a reason.
After Smile Direct Club for straightening I now use Bright On for 4 days every 6 months to fantastic results. I use the light because it helps me reduce salivation during treatment. I'd say six months of a bright smile with straight teeth is well worth the low cost. You don't have to spend the big bucks for a nice smile 😁
Great video! Unfortunately I just purchased a LED light with 9.5 % hydrogen peroxide gel. If I buy custom trays and wear them overnight, what percentage gel should I use?
You can but its not the same because whitening trays with a good design are like a wetsuit that form a really tight seal. They are softer material like a silicone whereas retainers are tight and rigid and have no particular seal.
A lot of my patients come from New York. There are a lot of great dentists there but check out my instagram for photos. @dr_mattnejad. No one does the detail and quality the way I like.
Actually. Teeth whitening with custom trays has been effective for tetracycline. Dr. Van Haywood initially shared this technique and it has been uses effectively many times but it requires persistence and a long time.
Dentist I've a question..my dentist said that I've naturally yellow coloured teeth so can these tools will work on my teeth as well as yellow teeth look kinda embarrassing?
Hi! Have you heard of disposable bleaching trays? Opalescence makes them and uses the same gel as the custom trays. I wonder if it would work just as well. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
Yes. They are pretty good but they are not intended to be used for longer periods and they don't have the best seal. Overall, they are not bad but not the best.
Every time I wake up after a night drinking wodka my teeth are super white. Because I didnt drink coffee that evening. Sadly, I rarely drink wodka now. Iam old, and the hangovers are getting worse.
As such i have, considering my age(58), reasonable good teeth, but they look bad( dark) I eat every day Blueberries and Blackcurrant, + drink coffee...there is a price to pay for the vitamins in the berries. Not sure a whitening would help much.
Do u need to follow curtain diey after whitening? I received carbomide peroxide 16% from my orthodonth, he said just to avoid coffee during 3 days of treatment. Is that enough to keep the result? How long and which diet to follow is this is needed?
Following a strict diet isn’t realistic in my opinion but coffee and tea lead to surface stain requiring more maintenance. Or you could wear your trays once every few months to maintain as needed.
At first, you said the solution stops working after 30 minutes and then later you said you recommend the patient wears it all night. Which doesn’t make sense if it stops working after 30 minutes, I had to read through several comments and responses until you clarified that the specific type of peroxide you use lasts for 10 hours approximately versus 30 minutes. I wish you had made that more clear in the video because that part definitely was confusing. .
I collaborated with a 3D printing company called Sprintray to provide this design of trays for other dentists and labs. You can look for a dentist who has a Sprintray 3D printer or ask if they can do bleaching tray models designed by Sprintray. Best - MN
A good whitening tray forms a tight seal to protect the gums from irritation and keep the gel from getting diluted with saliva. Most patients using their retainer get irritation so I don’t recommend that but some have managed to use it without a problem.
I tried carbamide peroxide with custom trays for 7 days every night unfortunatley my lower teeth got whitened only in 2/3 and upper in 1/2 (closer to gum - the more yellow) my dentist said it's because i have thick enamel and nothing can be do about it..
I'm jealous of your thick enamel ;-) I'm not a candidate for those fast high concentration because of health issues that effected my teeth. I'll eventually end up in caps to match my back implants. These expensive implants weren't the type I had been wanting but they are the ones I needed.
Hey suppose you’re doing whitening trays And you do 2 nights on , 1 night off for those lasting results. So do u do this 2:1 schedule for a certain amount of time then stop? Or r u to keep doing it repeatedly? How does that work
Thank you. You do it until you get the results you are happy with. With the 10% CP gel and good fitting trays, it is ok to use it until the results have reached your goal or until you lose interest.
@@BiomimeticDentistry ah thanks for the response but once you reach this point which you're satisfied with , you'd have to continue the 2 day 1 day thing to keep it? or you'd just stop or what?

You can do anything you want, but I don't recommend it. It usually does not form a good seal and therefore leads to gum irritation when the gel leaks out. I would never do it personally.
So not true. Bleaching trays account for less than .05 % of my income or revenue. You can do anything you would like but there is no reason to make this claim if you know what it takes to do a bleaching tray. Staff, time, overhead, lab costs. Of course we make money from it but it’s far from effective use of time for me but it’s the best option and that’s why I recommend it. Also, it’s definitely not all the same.

You are so welcome
thhhankk you Doctor, this vid is soo helpful
you are welcome!
I have retainers from having braces. Could i just use the gel in them?
You can but its not the same because whitening trays with a good design are like a wetsuit that form a really tight seal. They are softer material like a silicone whereas retainers are tight and rigid and have no particular seal.
Hi, do you have any referrals for cosmetic dentists in New York City?
A lot of my patients come from New York. There are a lot of great dentists there but check out my instagram for photos. @dr_mattnejad. No one does the detail and quality the way I like.
Where can I buy the gel. I have the trays but my dentist retired and the new one only sells the crest kit with the light.
My teeth have tetracycline stains ...what helps with that !!?
I have been using the whitening custom trays for 2 so days so far since I got it and I noticed white spots on my front teeth is that normal ?
Yes. Its a common stage of whitening that improves as you continue. If you stop it will also settle down.
what teeth whitening strips would you recommend,
When it comes to in office teeth whiting. Are you mentioning about kor teeth whiting as to continue in office?
Im referring to all in-office sessions except for internal whitening.
@@BiomimeticDentistry
Is Kor teeth whitening a in-office session?
Can I use a retainer I got after getting my braces off to put the gel on, or are the whitening ones a lot different?
Every time I wake up after a night drinking wodka my teeth are super white. Because I didnt drink coffee that evening. Sadly, I rarely drink wodka now. Iam old, and the hangovers are getting worse.
Hi 👋🏾 can trays be used if you've had work done on your teeth?
Yes but the work will not whiten so keep that in mind!
Great video. My dentist recommended kör, which I’m doing. He made my custom trays. What do you think of Kör?
I think its good. I like the design I do more but thats a great product too
What toothpaste do you recommend for the best tooth whitening?
Mac Donalds
The strips do well for me
As such i have, considering my age(58), reasonable good teeth, but they look bad( dark) I eat every day Blueberries and Blackcurrant, + drink coffee...there is a price to pay for the vitamins in the berries. Not sure a whitening would help much.
Should help.
I wish you had made that more clear in the video because that part definitely was confusing. .
Sorry about that, it can be confusing. When I said 30 minutes I called it hydrogen peroxide and when its longer acting its called Carbamide Peroxide.
So do I need to go into my dentist's office to get the trays made? or can I just buy a kit from amazon? what do you recommend doctor thank you
This is my question too
Yes you need to go dentist get them made get the bleach there to.. Iv done it.. its amazing lasted years..
Yea. You need an excellent impression. Right now we do a digital scan and we accentuate the gum margin to really define it well.
No bs info thank you
Well where do I go or what do I ask for when searching for a dentist to make me trays and provide the products you are talking about
I collaborated with a 3D printing company called Sprintray to provide this design of trays for other dentists and labs. You can look for a dentist who has a Sprintray 3D printer or ask if they can do bleaching tray models designed by Sprintray. Best - MN
Hello Dr. i wanted to ask about the different between percentages of carbamide peroxide
Please can you just recommend the best carbamide peroxide bleaching gel material ; ie most effective.
Slow and safe, lower %
10%
I'm not supposed to take out my retainer after braces, can I use the gel in my retainer?
A good whitening tray forms a tight seal to protect the gums from irritation and keep the gel from getting diluted with saliva. Most patients using their retainer get irritation so I don’t recommend that but some have managed to use it without a problem.
Where can we get those trays over the counter? Or is it only achieved thru your denist
They are custom made, so either a dentist, lab, or someone who knows how to make them properly.
I tried carbamide peroxide with custom trays for 7 days every night unfortunatley my lower teeth got whitened only in 2/3 and upper in 1/2 (closer to gum - the more yellow) my dentist said it's because i have thick enamel and nothing can be do about it..
7 is not enough and I disagree with your dentist. Also, the quality of the trays is extremely important.
I'm jealous of your thick enamel ;-) I'm not a candidate for those fast high concentration because of health issues that effected my teeth. I'll eventually end up in caps to match my back implants. These expensive implants weren't the type I had been wanting but they are the ones I needed.
Hey suppose you’re doing whitening trays
And you do 2 nights on , 1 night off for those lasting results. So do u do this 2:1 schedule for a certain amount of time then stop? Or r u to keep doing it repeatedly? How does that work
Also thank you so much for the informative video
I loved it
Thank you. You do it until you get the results you are happy with. With the 10% CP gel and good fitting trays, it is ok to use it until the results have reached your goal or until you lose interest.
@@BiomimeticDentistry ah thanks for the response
but once you reach this point which you're satisfied with , you'd have to continue the 2 day 1 day thing to keep it? or you'd just stop or what?
No. You can stop and maybe done 1-2x per year to maintain. Basically as needed.
@@BiomimeticDentistry thank you
can i just use my normal retainer and put the gel in it instead of getting a new tray?
A good whitening tray forms a tight seal to protect the gums from irritation and keep the gel from getting diluted with saliva. Most patients using their retainer get irritation so I don’t recommend that but some have managed to use it without a problem.
Can I use my retainer with the carbamide peroxide gel?
You can do anything you want, but I don't recommend it. It usually does not form a good seal and therefore leads to gum irritation when the gel leaks out. I would never do it personally.
Custom trays overnight work best for the patient but help the dentist buy his solid gold house. extortionate pricing for the trays
Dr. I just finished invisolign. Can I use those last trays and buy the gel?
A good whitening tray forms a tight seal to protect the gums from irritation and keep the gel from getting diluted with saliva. Most patients using their retainer/aligners/invisalign get irritation so I don’t recommend that but some have managed to use it without a problem.
does glossray really works?
Great logo
