"Have we got a full set of ditch finders?" lol!
My daughter just purchased one on a 2009 with only 55k on the clock in excellent condition,7 seats full leather all in pristine order. And in a nice gunmetal grey paint job.
For some inexplicable reason I have always fancied an R class. Timely and no nonsense review. I think at a Pounds 1000 it is a bargain.
It really is!
Hello Mate, well, I justifiably (4 kids) owned an R350 4Matic and honestly loved it. Fantastic for long road trips, with enough power outlets to keep everyone's devices going, and spacious enough for everyone to have their own space. The DVD screens helped. The panoramic sunroof made the (black leather) interior seem light and airy. Have you noticed the turning circle? Amazingly tight for such a long vehicle. It cruised on the freeway at 80 or 90 and felt calm and relaxed. I had over 175,000 miles on it when a Texas hail storm totaled it, and I was sorry to see it go. During all the time I had it, the only issues were the rear air shock bladders (an easy DIY fix) and front CV joints (not as easy, but doable). It was replaced by a GL320 CDI, which I also loved. The R350 was a quiet, comfortable, useful family hauler, and I'd buy another if I needed it, but three of the kids are out of the house now, so I'll stick to the S63 😀
Great choice of cars!
We really pity you having to cope with an S63 instead of a monster R-Class.
LOL The S63 has been fun, but a disaster! Seized cam buckets, broken head bolts, alternator, etc., etc. Recent repairs were over $7,000 in one month! 😮😮😮
@@TigreBrian what do you do for a living to afford them bills haha
Giannis, I stay car poor! I do have a "regular job", but that doesn't feed the habit... So, I buy cars that need work, do that work, and move them on for a small profit. Just sold a Jag X Type for a tidy profit, and just bought a Range Rover Sport HSE LUX with those funds. Should be able to make a few bob on the RR, and move up to something else. 😀 I do the same thing with motorcycles. Here in the States people don't ride their bikes enough, they sit, then don't start. I pick them up for a fraction, redo the fuel system, new battery, maybe tires, and usually double or triple my investment. Latest one was a KTM 300 MXC, bought for $1200, sold for $2600. By the way, the recent X Type was about $1100, and sold for $4000. And that my friend is how an expat Brit drives nice cars... Copious elbow grease 😂 Oh, and the S63 is the first car I haven't turned a profit on... So lesson learned... no more 6.2 liter Mercs! 😉
The R class, the Mercedes for the man that thinks they want a Mercedes Benz, but in his heart should have stayed with a Toyota Avensis.
God imagine being that guy….

@@topman.9646 Are you referring to having the name Cockburn , coupled with Kevin? Or are you referring to a man who should have stayed with a Toyota Avensis? Asking for a friend
that is an insult to Toyota! R class was on a par with Range Rover, ie every time a light goes on, you lost a grand!
“Another amg badge who are you trying to kid” yes Matt 😂😂
Always good to have a look at the dip stick before starting a unfamiliar engine..
That's quite a gem you've got there for a grand. Nice one. Glad you mentioned and acknowledged how spoilt we are here in the UK. A car like that where I grew up would probably be getting put on finance again even at that age and milage... We are very fortunate here and it's sad to see how wasteful people can be... Great video yet again and thoroughly enjoy your channel mate. 👍
For the money thats a fabulous car ,but as I live in London to own would cost me the best part of 400 quid a month in poxy ulez charges. Hence why so many nice older cars are now being scraped. Its got bugger all to do with the environment and everything to do with TFL getting themselves out of bankruptcy.
Yes. Corruption at it's finest. Yet, apparently it makes sense to pollute the air as long as the daily charge is paid. How ironic.
I swap my ford focus 1.6 diesel on 61 plate with 109000 miles on it
Unusual but very entertaining vids Matt. Love your sense of humour. First you find a V70 in the woods, now a Merc. Both in better condition than you ever expected. Tell me. Where are these woods and what can I expect to find for a grand?
I had to double take, my dad's name is one letter off from yours lol
maybe High Peak Autos is branching out
Most people can't see the wood for the trees
I've just twigged
I almost missed the R class in my search for a family van with 3 seat rows. Now we got one and we love it. The seats in the 3rd row are the best you can find when you dont want a bus.
Just discovered your channel a few days ago and have been on a binge ever since! Great work, really appreciate your videos.
Thank you! I appreciate it
I bought one of these fine cars back in May. R320, 2010 model. The rear suspension airbags were leaking so it was very cheap, (though a bit more than the grand you paid!) It was so easy to replace the airbags with good quality ones from a breakers, only tool needed other than lifting the car was a 10mm spanner! . It's a fantastic car, done Kent to Glasgow twice in it now, (38 mpg overall) so comfortable on the motorway.
13 hour trips to NW Scotland, arrive fresh as a daisy. Loved mine but pxd while it still had some residual.
I could see these being a future classic, very practical, very distinctive.
Fascinating and informative video. Thanks for taking the time to upload.
On a holiday in the Algarve some years ago, one of the employees at our hotel had an R63. Looked and sounded incredible. Never seen one since. Great vid and great purchase.
Don't you just hate people who buy cars then scrimp on everything like tyres!!
They’re mad. I can’t recall ever seeing one
Because they stretched their budget to the maximum buying the right badge to impress people they will never meet by driving cars they can't afford to maintain properly.
Yes the R63 is an extremely rare Mercedes these days because so few were made. In the hundreds. Would be interested to know how much one is worth in today's money
I remember seeing one for sale about 4 years ago, that's all I've ever seen lol
Had a 56 plate lwb sport from 09 to 19. Very nice family cruiser. Pulled at least 4t 😉of hardwood from S Wales including out of a muddy field, traction control is very good. These cars are over 2t dry and empty so they need proper tyres and brakes. Ours let us down twice: osr abs sensor immobilised car; drain to cabin air intake blocked and the rising water level eventually shorted the battery via a submerged connection. Mobilo to the rescue! BTW battery is under drivers seat on UK cars. Air suspension bags replaced at 80k front struts at 110k, Arnott replacements are better than Merc oem. 2 glow plugs needed drilling out, would help if Merc put the correct length plugs in so they seal in the tapered seat in the head...Traded it for a c350 but would consider an R63 if I could go back in time. Shame they are falling into the hands of those too tight to keep them tip top. OM642 and gearbox will probably consign them all to an early grave.
I agree with your comments about life expectancies of cars in UK. I am living in Kyiv and it’s not unusual to see 40 year old Ladas in great condition. Probably because the 2005 Mondeo tdci which I drove here after a friend gave it to. The equivalent left hand drive Mondeo is a €4500 car here. People do service and repair their cars a lot more even though they have one of the lowest hourly wages in Europe
Hope you're keeping safe.
It's a van built on ML platform. Only the body is changed and slightly lowered. I love it!
The room inside is most impressive. That’s a big bonus when your family are very tall. It’s a nice looking wagon too. Seems like another good buy.
These walk around videos are great! Really insightful just to see what the money gets you.
Thanks
I owned an r class for about 6 years and it was for me at the time a dream car, big powerful and comfortable cruiser. the review has absolutely nailed it with the drawbacks and general condition you will find these in. I spent ridiculous amounts of money over 10k trying to get my 56 plate sorted but it never happened. they are real money pits. biggest drawback is the air suspension models, they just keep going wrong I changed 5 airbags plus the compressor, kept throwing money at it and eventually threw the towel in. plus points, lovely drive, very comfortable but a guzzler, they all will have oil cooler leaks, injector problems and if you have a sunroof like mine that will go wrong too. you can find with very big spec for a 2006 car mine had sat nav, sunroof, harman kardon, electric memory seats, ipod connectivity and Bluetooth plus the infamous sticky steering wheel buttons, not sure how they come about.
another fabulous review by high peaks autos keep em coming
Sounds like a dreadful thing
I owned a R300CDI, the facelift model. Built like a tank and was a comfortable cruiser. Lots of issues right from new and spent a lot of time at the dealership ( ESP malfunction, leaking air suspension, worn out engine mounts, leaking CV boot etc etc). Mercedes service was a nightmare. Had to sell it. Very practical car when everything worked. If you buy one, you need to be mechanically inclined to service and repair these yourself
Thanks man i was looking for an EClass or S350 for long trips through europe.
These are so affordable they caught my attention. But i was weary of airmatic. And now this made me more certain im going to look for a big petrol BMW X5 or ML350
I had a 2007 R500 and now have a R350. Very practical car but the R500 on steel springs was a far far better car than the R350 diesel on air, much more reliable and the V8 was more fun to drive. Would have loved a R63 - seen a few around here in Vancouver, but this sort of car makes sense here rather than narrow UK seats and tiny parking spots (yeah, those rear doors are long - especially on the LWB version). Good car and either misunderstood or underestimated. Good review and entertaining presentation.
I've always fancied one of these for long journeys in supreme comfort. Awesome car to take on holiday
Looking forward to hearing about the RR. Hope it’s not too bad (/expensive!)
This is the second car I've seen you pick up from that muddy wooded area having already had the key in your possession and having never seen the car before. Its like a spy movie. Intriguing 🤔

Follow your channel for a year now. No BS and straight to the point, good job really. Just wonder if in the UK there is a market for cheap LHD vehicles for export. I live in continental Europe. Maybe a topic for a future video. Cheers!
Here in Galicia that car would fetch at least 10,000€.
Fleet sales and disposable culture have created ridiculously low second hand prices in the Uk which allow great purchases like this.
Enjoy it while you can!
Good comment.
The days of cheap second hand cars are numbered.
Hi Matt, I recognise that location from the recent Volvo video, do you do all your car deals at dogging sites?
😂 I only pick up during daylight hours
Lol. There’s more than a whiff of the dogger about the R class. Uber schmutzig wagon.
i was positive you were going to sort it and keep for a while. thanks for uploading
Great buy perfect motor for the winter I've never seen one and it looks huge
Another brilliant video. Love the " how spoilt we are " comment. True, cars like this Merc, looked after, can give some more years service. Keep the videos coming. Just a refreshing take on modern motoring.
Thanks for watching
I really like the refreshed look of the R-class. I was seriously considering a 2011 R350 before I picked up my 2010 XC90 V8 a week ago.
Nice, that engine must be rare think its only been in few S60's?
@@AngryPostmanStockholm Never factory installed in a S60 as far as I know; but it was an option in the P2 XC90 from 2005-2011, and the P3 S80 from 2007-2010.
Another great video. Loved seeing this one, I'd almost forgot the R class existed. Those AMG badges need binning though...
Those badges give it an extra 50 horsepowers!!!
Weather didn’t disappoint. I lived in Buxton and that was a nice day!
The buttons clean up nicely with some citrus based cleaner. Takes a little patience but they come up like brand new and all that sticky stuff comes off (same for the headlight switch panel). I had exactly the on my ML. Love this channel, my favourite car channel by a mile 👍
Thanks for the tip!
Actually I heard about a product used for guitarists
Jim Dunlop lemon oil. You can clean the fretboard on your Strat when you’ve de-stickied the steering wheel! 😆😆
Wow. That's crazy. That is still a really nice car that just needs a bit of TLC. I would say that's got another 10 years of life left in it, at average mileage! Stick some private plates on it and most people would be impressed. I don't like this new car obsessed society. If you spend 30-40k on something, it should have a 20 year life-span. 😊
Should yes, but like a lot of things... haven't.
This new car obsessed society does seem to be waning though thankfully, new car sales are falling year upon year. Perhaps the 2022 EU safety reform with extra unnecessary safety kit might be a good thing, it’ll put people off buying a new car! Certainly does me, although I never buy new.
even Dacia is now over 10K new and upwards of 25K,
I like them, seem fairly rare on the roads, if you need a Barge it would be perfect
Timing chain, balance shaft sprocket, adjustable cams. Transmission body plate. All of those major items
This car would be perfect for a little campervan that can drive thousands of miles comfortably. If it doesn't break ^^
That’s true. Take the seats out and there’s loads of room
But they break all the time
Would be a great project.. so many options...I'm almost tempted to have a go 5k budget and you've still got a cruiser...

Another great video with an unusual car.
I bought an R class on an 07 about 7 years ago
Probably one of the worst purchases I’ve made, it spent more time in the garage than on the road and was in limp mode more times than a camp hairdresser
In its defence when it did work it Was refined and rather rapid
Having 4 kids and driving this beast made us feel special compared to all the Vauxhall Zaferas and Renault Megan’s so all in all a mixture of emotions
Great review! Love watching all of them! Quality Merc from the late 06's with matching tyres, bargin for 1k :)
Enjoying your videos. I'd be fascinated to hear your views on a 2nd hand Alfa Mito.
I hate to admit that I really enjoyed driving one of these back when they first came out. It handles better than any vehicle that size should.
They drive well
We’ve had two - a ‘56 plate 320CDI and a facelift 350CDI - they can really be hustled along without any drama.
Dove one for 20 hours and zero fatigue
I'm always amazed watching these videos how affordable second hand cars in the UK. Here in Spain that would cost at least six grand, probably a good bit more.
there`s a big market here for cheap Japan imports too, you could consider importing one? not sure about the red tape since Brexit though. hey get in touch i will find the cars, you find the ex-pat buyers!
But then you have high insurance and road tax...
Quick sale within the trade sounds good

If this gets seen, that’s a perfect vehicle to sell to a taxi firm. The Mercedes taxi is always a good sign of quality for a taxi firm.
If it was a 220 maybe but the 320 is too thirsty and a lot of cities are introducing emissions zones that ban all but the most efficient diesels made in the last few years. Might be ok for an airport taxi or something for long runs I guess.
Wouldn't have thought the reliability is there anymore either.
Hey Mat whats the recent ULEZ law changes that has taken place for diesel car entering london. Kindly make a video on this topic.

Get something petrol due to the problems with ULEZ as you mentioned. If you just want something boring and reliable a Skoda Fabia is a good shout. Or something Japanese like Suzuki swift or honda jazz.
Im always amazed for how little money you find this cars, congratulations!
Brave. I hope the force is with you.
Me too
Ii can’t understand the culture of car ownership here in the Uk of changing cars every three or four years . With today’s build quality and technology a well maintained and cared for car should last many years. Yet we are persuaded by advertising and marketing that we need the latest versions. Keeping your car on the road for longer has to be better for the environment.
I kept one of my cars for 17 years - mk3 golf, and didnt get rid of it when I got my mark 4 golf which had 179000 miles on it when I sold it at 16 years old (I owned it 13 years). I tend to overlap cars and give them to family members as they know I look after them. I agree with you - if you buy a used car these days (I’ve never had a new car) you can get a long life out of them.
My wife has had 2 golfs in the last 20 years. Ive had about 20 cars in that time. I think her way is cheaper but i get a bit bored....well i used to...on 4 years with my current vehicle.
I used to swap every 3-4 years, also through boredom. I bought my first ever new car in 2016 (Audi Q7) and specced it the way i wanted. I considered replacing it last year, but decided to keep it - as the car has everything I want (obviously), the new Audis have a horrible touch screen for everything and it just made no sense to move into another new car that I like less than my current one. I plan to keep this car until EVs are feasible. I love the idea and have driven an Audi e-Tron a few times (courtesy car when mines was in for work), but they are far too pricey just now and the charging network is years away from being efficient / adequate.
Matt, Alright...you’ve bought a great cheap Disco for £500 and now this for £1000. I want to see you pick out FIVE more ridiculously good deals like these and purchase them. That will give you 7 affordable cars, and a lot of video content. Decide for yourself (or perhaps ask the viewers) which car will be the Monday, Tuesday, etc for all seven. Drive each car as your daily on its day of the week for the next year (start when you have all 7 cars). Do updates on the fleet periodically. Perhaps, since each will be driven a minimum, or maximum 52 times, you could do NOTHING to them and see which lives the entire year. Another scenario is get them in great nick and then see, at the end of the year, can you sell all 7 for a profit or loss. Lastly, if any are like this R class and vehicles you personally find undesirable or the converse, very desirable...did your opinion change after owning and driving them weekly for a year. 😁😁 Perhaps also do something appropriate with each car as well. Haul someone’s kids to school in the R class, go camping in the Disco, buy something sporty and take it to the track etc. Get totally out of your comfort zone and watch your views, subscriptions, and £££ go up up up.
very well said. lets not chat shit about cars you carnt even buy for £500. people shouldnt be blagged.
1000£ is a bargain for it.You guys are very fortunate. Where I am based on this earth you be lucky to find 1 for for 10,000£. And the under body and wheel arches will be rusty
Great video of the Mercedes Benz R Class!!!!
These are ludicrously cheap. As most big merc and bmw estates etc are. The government as usual has the wrong end of the stick. Encouraging us to buy new hybrids and electric cars which have a very high initial carbon footprint when it is far greener to encourage us to get maximum life out of existing cars. That R probably has another 100,000 miles in it.
I agree. Easily
Just bought an 11 plate R350CDi back in October.
E bought it for regular trips to France with our dogs and needed the space for all the stuff we inevitably take there (we have a house there).
It's not done the France trip yet but has done a few long days out in the UK and it's an absolute pleasure to drive.
With 265hp it's pretty quick for something so huge, is very comfortable and quiet and driven sensibly we've seen 41mpg a few times on long motorway and dual carriageway runs. The 350cdi also qualifies for lower road tax than the 320.
It's just had a major service at a good independent - new front pads, oil, filters and transmission oil and filter change for a whisker over £600. I'm happy with that.
Incidentally it did come with a set of mismatched ditchfinders....

Yep 100% the savvy mans 3ltr luxury runaround (van) or the (hearse) as we call it, 56 now on a private plate, full leather all the whistles & bells, had 4 years for 5k with 72k now 98k on the clock had couple of issues? simply a posh tank it just keeps going and it can shift with ease when required, drives like a dream.. tax is a killer but average it out considering it didn’t cost 30k but drives like 30k averages late 20’s mph around town mid 30’s on a long run.

But the best bit your not worried about the odd scratch or dent. If it went bang tomorrow hey ho! It’s paid for itself over and over.
Very great Mercedes-Benz ! Please make a deatailing video !
Pretty comfy cars these. A family friend had one with the same engine as that but in black
Your videos is great.
Long MOT too, great luck with this one!
