On a holiday in the Algarve some years ago, one of the employees at our hotel had an R63. Looked and sounded incredible. Never seen one since. Great vid and great purchase.
Don't you just hate people who buy cars then scrimp on everything like tyres!!
They’re mad. I can’t recall ever seeing one
Because they stretched their budget to the maximum buying the right badge to impress people they will never meet by driving cars they can't afford to maintain properly.
Yes the R63 is an extremely rare Mercedes these days because so few were made. In the hundreds. Would be interested to know how much one is worth in today's money
I remember seeing one for sale about 4 years ago, that's all I've ever seen lol
Had a 56 plate lwb sport from 09 to 19. Very nice family cruiser. Pulled at least 4t 😉of hardwood from S Wales including out of a muddy field, traction control is very good. These cars are over 2t dry and empty so they need proper tyres and brakes. Ours let us down twice: osr abs sensor immobilised car; drain to cabin air intake blocked and the rising water level eventually shorted the battery via a submerged connection. Mobilo to the rescue! BTW battery is under drivers seat on UK cars. Air suspension bags replaced at 80k front struts at 110k, Arnott replacements are better than Merc oem. 2 glow plugs needed drilling out, would help if Merc put the correct length plugs in so they seal in the tapered seat in the head...Traded it for a c350 but would consider an R63 if I could go back in time. Shame they are falling into the hands of those too tight to keep them tip top. OM642 and gearbox will probably consign them all to an early grave.
I bought one of these fine cars back in May. R320, 2010 model. The rear suspension airbags were leaking so it was very cheap, (though a bit more than the grand you paid!) It was so easy to replace the airbags with good quality ones from a breakers, only tool needed other than lifting the car was a 10mm spanner! . It's a fantastic car, done Kent to Glasgow twice in it now, (38 mpg overall) so comfortable on the motorway.
13 hour trips to NW Scotland, arrive fresh as a daisy. Loved mine but pxd while it still had some residual.
For the money thats a fabulous car ,but as I live in London to own would cost me the best part of 400 quid a month in poxy ulez charges. Hence why so many nice older cars are now being scraped. Its got bugger all to do with the environment and everything to do with TFL getting themselves out of bankruptcy.
Yes. Corruption at it's finest. Yet, apparently it makes sense to pollute the air as long as the daily charge is paid. How ironic.
I swap my ford focus 1.6 diesel on 61 plate with 109000 miles on it
Always good to have a look at the dip stick before starting a unfamiliar engine..
"Have we got a full set of ditch finders?" lol!
I bought an R class on an 07 about 7 years ago
Probably one of the worst purchases I’ve made, it spent more time in the garage than on the road and was in limp mode more times than a camp hairdresser
In its defence when it did work it Was refined and rather rapid
Having 4 kids and driving this beast made us feel special compared to all the Vauxhall Zaferas and Renault Megan’s so all in all a mixture of emotions
This car would be perfect for a little campervan that can drive thousands of miles comfortably. If it doesn't break ^^
That’s true. Take the seats out and there’s loads of room
But they break all the time
Would be a great project.. so many options...I'm almost tempted to have a go 5k budget and you've still got a cruiser...
@@imonlytellingthetruth6562 not all the time.. the bloke is indestructible.. gearbox and electric have issues..
@@HighPeakAutos take the seats out and you've got a stylish event car..
When Matt goes down to the woods today, he sure is in for a big surprise 🤣
😂
@@HighPeakAutos what are you doing dressed as the king of chavs
It's cold haha
Most R Classes in the US are the champagne color. As a gigging musician, it’s simply the best van I’ve ever owned. Its M272 has 285hp and doesn’t mess around. It will max out the speedo.
Pro tip: The Sport suspension button is tremendously helpful.
Timing chain, balance shaft sprocket, adjustable cams. Transmission body plate. All of those major items
Hi Matt. I think you should take it to Spain; chuck in a bunch of good old friends, hoping that you'll return without a spanish service bill. And yes, you are lucky, the same car will cost you about €5.000 in other parts of Europe...Great vid
You’re right!
I bought an A3 you were bang on - wiper stopped working, no cambelt change, lots of brake dust, only it didn't smell of the devil's lettuce though!
😂 unfortunately I do have lots of experience of this
Never seen the need for mercedes to make a car of this class, however after watching this video and see how cavernous it is inside I know now why they produced it. Nice vid.
If this gets seen, that’s a perfect vehicle to sell to a taxi firm. The Mercedes taxi is always a good sign of quality for a taxi firm.
If it was a 220 maybe but the 320 is too thirsty and a lot of cities are introducing emissions zones that ban all but the most efficient diesels made in the last few years. Might be ok for an airport taxi or something for long runs I guess.
Wouldn't have thought the reliability is there anymore either.
My 2007 R350 has 175k other than brakes and a new alternater 7 years and not a single issue
Would make a great taxi, perhaps with some cheap non dating plates. I've seen much lesser cars running fine with over 300k on the clock.
Lesser cars being what?
Loved the Range Rover pause! ☺️☺️☺️I’m literally 5 minutes from Land Rover Stafford!
I like these, really quirky.
Haha I’ll be there soon picking it up with any luck
Loved this car when it was launched, 6 full size seats 💺 nice!
They’re very unusual
Rear seats recline a few degrees while still upright so kids sleep easily too.
Interesting it came from Waltham Cross. That’s slap bang, more or less, next to Tesco Head Office at Cheshunt. It’s possible the car was originally a Tesco company car a# they buy a load of company cars. General Managers and many HO staff could choose their company cars. Just a thought.
Merc used them as mobile assistance wagons too.
This R-Klasse has a fake AMG badge.
AutoTopNL really hates them.
But there is an R63 AMG that Doug reviewed. This has the same 6.2 litre V8 in the E63 AMG from back then. 0-62: 4.4 seconds
Yes that’s right
Drive it to Cornwall and its £4k all day as it stands now prices here are very very high, any car is worth double the second it crosses the tamar, amazed dealers dont cotton on .
That brake wear or abs visit workshops is usually camber setting thats lost, turn key on with foot on brake full left lock full right lock back to centre, turn engine off with foot still on brake and back on within 15 seconds and it resets
You lucky british guy - a car just like yours, but with 338.025 miles on the clock sells for 7500 pounds, and the roadtax is 1750 pounds. In Denmark that is !!!
Spot on about people being spoiled with motors these days, pretty sure there are plenty of flashy people with flashy cars paying for it on the never never. Just to give the appearance of success.
A very expensive way of getting about...so why not save a few beans and stick an AMG badge on your diesel people carrier!😁
I've seen a number of times this month, a driver who fixed an AMG badge on the back of his W211 E350😀😅😂. Hilarious.
I had a facelift R350 cdi for a while, exceptional motorway cruiser and with all the seats folded flat the capacity is ginormous. It’s basically a lowered GL.
@@whazzylazzy Yes, the GL is an awesome car. My next car due in April will be a GLS 350d AMG-Line. 🥰
@@whazzylazzy Wow 😯 I earn nearly that a day and credit is extremely easy to get, too easy really. 😔
@@peterdelamareкакой у вас заработок ежемесячный и расход? На квартиру, питание?
Take the back seats out, install a bed and it's the perfect thing for going dogging. 😁👍
That would explain the sticky buttons
@@fx02zbn that's rather disturbing thought.
Sounds like you’re speaking from experience😉
Be careful about testing the interior lights
Pretty disgusting
Great review,I nearly bought one of those about 10 years ago,I bottled it when I read it costs a £1 a mile to run 😳so I bought 3 versos for the next 10 years, now I have a Volvo XC40 💗
I have a silver lwb with a panoramic sunroof
Its an amazing drive and machine
Love this kind of video more of these pleaseee 🙏🙏🙏🙏💪💪💪
Will do
i was positive you were going to sort it and keep for a while. thanks for uploading
My family had a silver 55 plate R Class for about 7 years. Absolutely brilliant car, comfortable with the nappa leather seats, quick for a 3 ton diesel car, had a TV in the back (which when you’re a young child is wicked), and was utterly reliable up to 130k miles, then it went to pot. Shame, as it’s the only Mercedes 4x4 that gets close to an S Class.
Hi Matt , if your thinking of selling the Sl55 let me know
Thanks
Great Review on R class 😀
Thanks! You’ll be waiting a long time. I’m never selling it
@@HighPeakAutos damn!
Just happened upon this vid by accident: OMG I had one of these here in Canada! A 2007 R320 CDI, a black beast of a thing. Loved it. Great family-hauler, very comfortable, gobs of low-end power, and a unique alternative to a soul-crushing minivan. The R-series is MB's (deliberately) forgotten ultrawagen (uber-estate) ... deserves a better rep than history's given it, TBTH. The death knell for me: MB's outrageous parts costs. I was giving a kidney every time I took my R320 in for an oil change. Sad to see it go...but the blame lies at MB's greed, really.
Surprised the centre storage works and wasn’t full of sticky stuff
Actually AMG did make a 3 litre diesel engine, based on the 5 cylinder 2.7cdi. The engine was used only in the C 30 AMG, but it wasn't very popular for obvious reasons.
Hmmm. 🤔That car is shockingly good for the price! PS. I love the way you put this video together. Enjoyed every second.
Love our 2012 R350. Just bought it a couple months ago with 36k miles. Cannot beat the utility with little kids. The 2012 replaced our 08 R350 that we owned for 6 years and put 70k miles on it (110k-180k miles). Great vid, need to do a follow up.
Hi I’m thinking of getting one I’ve heard they are bad on diesel how have you found them
Follow your channel for a year now. No BS and straight to the point, good job really. Just wonder if in the UK there is a market for cheap LHD vehicles for export. I live in continental Europe. Maybe a topic for a future video. Cheers!
Like the ML and GL the R Class was built in the USA, not fond of the 320 anything, tend to fall apart around the engine, got a 3 Litre Viano that cost me €6,000 Euros in repars two years age, engine was fine, judst the bits aound it, started moter , petrol pump etc.
Want to buy a GL, the price drop is horrendous, good for a cheapskate like myslelf, need LHD drive though as I live in Germany, bought my LHD Viano in the UK, a lot cheaper than in the Fatherland!
Love your videos!
I was thinking about buying a Range Rover, but the split rear door is a bummer for a Taxi!
Hi Matt, do what you do best. Sort it out properly and sell it for a small profit and keep your reputation. Pat
Impatiently waiting to see total costs of fix as I have set my eyes on one . If I dont get an E320CDI "Wagon" I6 :).
Thank you for your fresh and no nonsense reviews
I just bought one for just short of 1000 pound. Only 84,000 miles. black. petrol R350. The only 1 problem with mine is the air suspension sometimes bottomed out in 1 corner... hmmm. Time to get to work
Somehow there's two R63's in my city. Very unusual but awesome cars!
Ah, JLR, God bless them. Loving the R Class. A real solid tank.
3:45 well you are wrong because the people at Affalterbach really did make a 3.0 diesel AMG hahaha
They didn't put it in the R though
Put high peak autos branding all of it as a wrap and use it as a gate guardian
I actually quite like these cars. Considered buying one some time back. The space is awesome. It’s not a minivan, but it is. It doesn’t look like one. But it’s hardly a beauty. Practical though. Get the real AMG one and have fun. Ugly fun
Matt, Alright...you’ve bought a great cheap Disco for £500 and now this for £1000. I want to see you pick out FIVE more ridiculously good deals like these and purchase them. That will give you 7 affordable cars, and a lot of video content. Decide for yourself (or perhaps ask the viewers) which car will be the Monday, Tuesday, etc for all seven. Drive each car as your daily on its day of the week for the next year (start when you have all 7 cars). Do updates on the fleet periodically. Perhaps, since each will be driven a minimum, or maximum 52 times, you could do NOTHING to them and see which lives the entire year. Another scenario is get them in great nick and then see, at the end of the year, can you sell all 7 for a profit or loss. Lastly, if any are like this R class and vehicles you personally find undesirable or the converse, very desirable...did your opinion change after owning and driving them weekly for a year. 😁😁 Perhaps also do something appropriate with each car as well. Haul someone’s kids to school in the R class, go camping in the Disco, buy something sporty and take it to the track etc. Get totally out of your comfort zone and watch your views, subscriptions, and £££ go up up up.
very well said. lets not chat shit about cars you carnt even buy for £500. people shouldnt be blagged.
I've only ever seen two of these. I was working in a garage and one was towing the other.
Years ago I owned a 2008 R350; mine was gasoline version. I thought it was Mercedes' attempt at a "Soccer Mom SUV." And they hit the mark; the car was a great long distance cruiser and the cabin is much roomier than it appears from the exterior. I sold the car to a friend a few years ago and it is still going strong approaching 190K miles. (Generally I don't think it's a good idea to sell a car to a friend but I had a lot of confidence it this car.) I'm not sure of the exchange rate but 1,000 pounds sounds like an outstanding deal. If memory serves me correctly, my R350 was manufactured in the US...North Carolina maybe. The one negative about this car is the battery location...under the passenger seat. Not easy to access. It was also a bit of a guzzler, but I don't count that as a negative because one doesn't buy a Mercedes for it's great gas mileage. Great video...you covered all the bases.
P. Ray. You are correct about it being assembled in the US. It was in Alabama. Last models were assembled by AM General (of HUMVEE fame) in the midwest. They were/are popular in China. I had a 2007 R320 CDI. I loved the car, but the maintenance was expensive. We replaced the usual including oil cooler seals, air suspension, transmission conductor plate, wheel speed sensors, glow plugs and two A/C compressors in 7 years and only about 50,000 miles.
These are ludicrously cheap. As most big merc and bmw estates etc are. The government as usual has the wrong end of the stick. Encouraging us to buy new hybrids and electric cars which have a very high initial carbon footprint when it is far greener to encourage us to get maximum life out of existing cars. That R probably has another 100,000 miles in it.
I agree. Easily
We're on our second R class, bit with 4 kids there's not much that really fits us all and the dog.
Originally had a 2009 prefacelift R350 diesel, then moved on after a year. Regretted it and a couple of years later we bought an early 2012 face-lift.
Nicer front and rear (ish), 265 bhp and amazingly, 30mpg and semisensible road tax.
They don't do corners, but straight-line is always fun, and we found a trip to France was just grand, everyone moves put your way when they see that immense merc barge as it barrels down the motorway.
They have their faults, but for a larger family, we've not found anything that comes close in the same price range.
The trouble is, now they’ve stopped making them, what on earth do you replace it with?
@@HighPeakAutos I'd say a G class, but lordy are they expensive. Part of the appeal of the R class is all the bad press makes them affordable to buy at least.
Use it for a van - my dad does… we managed to fit a marble worktop in the back of it. It pulled like a train but sent the air suspension warning light on!
That granite was over 1/2 a tonne and hanging way out back.
Yep 100% the savvy mans 3ltr luxury runaround (van) or the (hearse) as we call it, 56 now on a private plate, full leather all the whistles & bells, had 4 years for 5k with 72k now 98k on the clock had couple of issues? simply a posh tank it just keeps going and it can shift with ease when required, drives like a dream.. tax is a killer but average it out considering it didn’t cost 30k but drives like 30k averages late 20’s mph around town mid 30’s on a long run.
But yes got the engine and gearbox serviced just after purchase.
Get over the looks and you’ve got a bargain basement luxury (mpv estate van skip) that you can fit a double mattress in.
I just can’t get rid of it.
But the best bit your not worried about the odd scratch or dent. If it went bang tomorrow hey ho! It’s paid for itself over and over.
Used cars seem insanely cheap in UK compared to the continental Europe, probably due to right hand drive. 15 years ago people even imposed cars from the UK and did a conversation, and it was still cheaper.
Always had a hampering for an R class. I believe they are based on an E class estate with a different body. Looked at a few over the years but never found a nice one.
Only one I had an interest was the r63 but I can still see the appeal if you want something luxury with extra seats
being a merc it will have a minimum of 43 fault codes whatever the model or year ;;; your right = it will often burn out glowplugs and controlers ..
Good to hang out with u Matt
After ur predictions it was interesting to know how many u got right ?
Paint it black and use it as hearse
Looks like great motor way cruiser but high tax bracket and terrible mpg puts me off it
I’ve wanted an R series since they came out. I think they look great. And for long journeys in theory it must be superb. Just frightened of the maintenance
They’re not too bad if you find a nice one and stick with a Merc specialist
@@HighPeakAutos as you say in the video, as I’m in Germany, this wouldn’t be a grand 😂 but it would be well maintained. Thanks (or not) for piquing my interest!
You can. Fear them 😁
I'm surprised the car was not detailed before selling...manners!
Full engine and gearbox service.Get the brakes sorted and a set of Michelin Cross Climate tyres from Costco while the offer is still on. Brilliant Peak,Lake, Snowdonia District car.
Good idea
Matt, Swap the Bluetooth device with your SL and you’ll have a phone that works on the buttons and access to your phone directory…
Made comment elsewhere, in US 100k car is just run in, in UK, run out and reflected in 2nd hand prices.
What about changing it to a mini camper for the stay cations market?
Funny you say that at 3:40, at one point, AMG did actually make a 3 litre Diesel AMG Engine, it was a 3 litre 5 cylinder, slotted into the C class, and named the C30 CDi AMG.
It wasn't great. They said they would never do another performance diesel engine again. The performance wasn't fantastic, 0-62 took around 6.9 seconds, with 231bhp. It did not sell well.
Ah didn’t know that
Here in Norway, that car is worth about £ +/- 9K.
They are less popular because they became popular as hearses.
Great buy perfect motor for the winter I've never seen one and it looks huge
Quite a lot of car for £1000 that. I particularly loved the explanation as to the whereabouts of your Range Rover Matt
The autos have a major gear box issue which always goes wrong. Really expensive to fix
Amg badges are genuine, was offered with the amg styling pack.
Interesting
Unfortunately although the car has plenty of life the tax and fuel means a whole list of cars are now just not worth running. This is how they will eventually push us to the new directive of e-cars etc
Over here in Belgium these go for 9k, with 300k on the clock and nowhere near this condition. Total bargain!
That’s crazy
It looks like there were AMG styling options on the R series so the badging may be legit and mean it's worth even more.
Surely is a bargain… wish I can found one like that here in TX.
Essex with the AMG Badges.. Very Predictable.
I`ve just found you, what a great presenter you are.
AT THE MOMENT MY 728I has pirelli 6000 on all round .
Great video of the Mercedes Benz R Class!!!!
the sticky buttons are the worst on these cars. i have a 2006 ML350 (which has the same steering wheel and buttons) and they must’ve had some rubber coating that has since dissolved into a stick substance.
I'm after one of these I think in the new year...needs a proper check out first I think!!
Uk prices are extremely low on luxury cars getting 13 years old. This car is still 8000 punds in Norway. New price was 100.000. Ship it to norway and sell it for 5000 😄
Hi Matt, great car for 1k with the rear climate control too. R320 CDIs used to have blown exhausts - speaking from experience!!
So now I know what an R class is, I had no idea, not my bag baby, don't do SUVs, but seems like a bargain, but I seem to remember someone saying that there's no such thing as a cheap Merc?
Big up from Scotland 👍👍👍
Decent tyres on it, de badge and a cheap non year plate with a service and it's a bargain for someone and a quick flip to pay your land rover bills 👌
You’re right
He needs to turnover three of those a week to maintain a Land Rover.
@@johntheaccountant5594 🤣🤣🤣
It’s a great car for the price, well done 👍❤️.
with the expanded ULEZ in london and plans for ULEZ in most major towns and cities the time is coming when you will be able to pick up one for a few quid along with a raft of other makes and models
The ULEZ expansion is a certain death sentence for many 2000s diesels.
Well Matt at one point in time I'd have taken that off your hands BUT there is a new car coming to the UK from China called an ORA Cat EV and for the price of £25K I am very interested, as it has reported a good range of miles between top ups and it is everything that could see me out driving wise. But if it's okay with you I'll stay a loyal fan/critique and we'll see what comes along that I may have driven previously. Cheers the Noo.
Refer to my comment regarding the range rover on the last video 😂 I didn't think it would be broken already though, that's a new record. You can't go wrong with any £1000 vehicle really. Get more than that in parts if you're fussed, or clean it up and make a few hundred quid profit. The pale blue really is dreadful though. I think the same when I see a new dacia in baby-poo brown. I can't imagine anyone setting foot in the dealership and saying: yes, thats the one I want. Anyway, nice little bargain as per, well done for taking the risks. Not my cup of tea but has got me thinking about captains chairs.
It’s only a couple of minor things 😂 Can’t beat captains chairs too 😉
The R Class is number 3 in Doug DeMuros minivan list. A good day for R Class videos
Look like it could be a grand commercial vehicle flatten the seats massive boot liner and away yu go
the road tax and the extra charge for driving into london kills these cars off , which is a shame
I always judge a vehicle on the make of its tyres 🤣
It’s the easiest way
I like these. They've never really had a spotlight shine on them
You are SOOO correct on the Audis 🤣🤣🤣. I have similar experiences on A4 also that im using currently. Not mine, luckily!!
😂 it’s a well trodden path for me
Looks like it’s had some front end paint on the near side - front and rear doors don’t match
Hi mate quick question... I've found a R class fairly cheap. The issue is the boot has to be held open. Do you know what the fault could be? Is it cheap to repair?
Just saw a video of a guy picking up a volvo in that same location. Not sure if it was also you
Roadtax in Holland arround 2600 Euro for a year.
Idk about the R class
It seems like a car brought by people who’ve given up on life
Also do you always pick up your cars from that place in the woods
Sometimes the cheap ones get left there
