Today I've gone and bought one of my favourite cars; an old Mercedes ML.
#mercedesml #highpeakautos
I completely relate to the feeling of getting in a car that your parents have when you were i young kid. my old man used to drive a clio which i guess is nothing to write home about but whenever i get in one it brings up happy memories and a nostalgia , i guess thats why we like cars , for what they make us feel
Yeah exactly!
I feel the same about an Alpine Chrysler, and Vauxhal Viva, but it's been a LONG time since I went in one of those.
Yeah, but I'm dreading the day I get back in a Citroen BX estate... Seems my teenage years were different to Matt's!
How true! My parents had an Austin A40 Devon and I bought one in 2014. Ahhh, the memories of childhood 😊
Mid 1980s to 1994 Ford Granada and Scorpio. I know exactly what you mean. We drove across Europe in those for summer holidays. I owned one in the mid 2000s, needed work, but was a sound car.
I bought an ml350 2004 and can honestly say its my favorite car I have ever had. You don't have to worry about scratching it etc, its rugged and will honestly drive anywhere through sand, mud whatever. Never have I felt like it will let me down.
Had a C270 CDi, same engine as the ML, loved it! The 5 cylinder diesel sounded so much better than a 4 pot, was bloody good on fuel too. A friend had an ML270. Bought it brand new, was a lovely thing.
2.7 engine is brilliant, got one in my sprinter, superb on fuel
When you switched the engine on and walked around to open the bonnet, I honestly thought the Police helicopter was hovering directly above you. I think the best description of that engine is "agricultural".
I always loved the design of these MLs and the second gen. I haven't driven one though, but I've ridden in an ML350 (first gen) and it was very quiet for an SUV with a V6, and it had very comfortable seats.
Yup! I see what’s going on here! New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle started playing in my mind the second I saw the thumbnail! “It’s no problem of mine, but it’s a problem I find, livin’ a life that I can’t leave behind!” Well done, lots of cool relatable elements there: family trips, no trains, the bleak North, the commute to London, etc. Some folks refer to it as “nostalgia” but I’ve decided to rebrand it as “elegant melancholy” myself! 🚗
This one definitely feels like a brave purchase Matt, even given your nostalgia for the 1st generation ML.
Turning a profit on this one will be challenging, surely - Mercedes rust on any product of this period is truly shocking!
Doesn’t stop it being a good video though 👍
Spares or repairs they bring in around £900
You’ve nearly sold me on the ML. I’ve always liked the look of them, I’d probably go for a newer one around 2012 though.
This brings back memories. My Dad had one of these when I was younger. Exactly the same colour / spec / wheels / seats. But a 2002.
We drove through France & Italy in it on a family holiday.
So I share the nostalgia.
Had these ML's till 2018. Was very unreliable but there was something charming about it.
The most important parts of the car is very reliable though. Especially with an m112 or m113 engine. That's the plus side.
Also, whilst you mention it, I love the old P38 RR. I had two (a 4.0 and a 4.6) and they were both really reliable. I remember taking it to the LR specialist for a service and he said “there’s no such thing as an unreliable P38. There is, however, such a thing as badly maintained P38s”. Which reinforces the point you always make: service the car/gearbox on time, fix problems when they arise and run it on premium fuel abs you should be fine.
I love the P38. I keep contemplating buying another. I need a bigger garage
Its a shame (shame on Mercedes-Benz), that the paintwork is so bad. Otherwise that car should still have plenty of life in it.
I am lucky, my 2003 ML500 has excellent bodywork - Andradite Green with Java beige interior.
The 500 engine is a fine drive, and I, like you, I love the relaxed way they go down the road.
Its still only covered 70k and is like new, with no rattles or faults. Mine has the 7 seats also, not that I use them (they are in the garage as they take up too much boot space).
Tyres are quite limiting as they are specific to this model (275/55 x 17)
The Continental and Michelin ones are crap in snow or off-road, and the Dunlop TG35 Grandtrek's are no longer made (which were good all rounders).
The Hankook Ventus are brilliant wet/and dry, are great in the snow and mud too, I have used these now for 8 years or more - good quality tyre.
I love that interior, it seems to have the balance right between hard wearing and practical and actually quite stylish and luxurious. I'm not so keen on the external styling but still pretty nice. Mercedes is my favourite of the German brands and I think that is because of the excellent cars they did through the 70s to 90s.
If we're gonna do a collab, can it be on this? I was gonna buy one for a laugh
Yes but only if it’s a petrol 😉
Ha Ha James - I won an ML500 (£4600) on eBay last year, it was a 1 owner car but being sold by a trader. I think he spent so much money getting it through the MOT that he wouldn't let me have it :(
@@ianmason3040 sounds about right!
@@JayEmmOnCars Do the right thing and get an ML55 AMG! They can still be had for a song these days...
My family still has a 2001 ml320 as our family car. We've had ours for over 10 years now and it's at 410,000 km. We've went across Canada 4 times already in it. Hope I can get it to 500k km as I live in Canada and the rust is just killing the body😔. I've always felt this truck has always had a bad rep for reliability, I personally think mechanically they're well built as our truck is still on the original engine and trans and difs. It's the electrical bits that are bad. Over the time we've owned it the auto locks have broken, window switches, auto folding mirrors, the radio has also gone. I'm probably forgetting something else lol but overall mechanically these trucks are well built and just require some love in the maintenance department and they'll keep chucking along as long as the rust doesn't kill it first.
I had an ML 350 02 plate about 12 years ago. Loved it and still have fond memories.
The 2.7 five cylinder sprinter engine sounds like a tractor but it is pretty bullet proof and can manage cosmic mileages, I had one for ten years and pulled heavy trailers at home and a large caravan around Europe, it was a good car. I sold it to a South African gentleman (Zulu) who bought it as a present for his dad, he added bull bars for protection from charging wild critters and it now is trogging around the veldt somewhere, it only had 97 (genuine) thousand on the clock, so it will probably be working for a long time yet.
I just bought a 2002 ml 320 , puts me in mind of drive a jeep very Stout, one I got was made in Germany ,looks as good as this one in vid ,dark blue tan interior ,got it for $500
😁👍
Yeah it is just you Matt but it’s good that people like what some others don’t. When I could finally afford any reasonable new car I bought a small over powered Japanese hatchback and I still love it 4 years later despite all the crap comments.
Most entertaining and honest car channel on UA-cam.
I have a 'soft spot' for Volvo estates, as my dad and uncles had them, throughout the 80s and 90s.
I completely agree with you. I have a soft spot for the MK IV GTI 1.8T and these ML too, always admired them.
I feel you... I have a 2003 Ml350 here in Kenya, Ex UK, Silver... It just gets under your skin... And stays there.. Solid, stolid, tank - like... Wonderful
Very nice
I love the first gen ml. I had a 2005 ML 350. It was the last of the mojicans!!!! And I lovded it.
I bought my first ML55 in 2004 (rhd, actually imported from London) and a second ML55 in 2014 which I still have. Love them. Noticed a few days ago that the pictogram on the dash actually points to the wrong side of the car for the fuel filler. Great vehicle.
Good choice
They must be tough, a couple of weeks ago in my neighbourhood a driver (Drunk) wiped out a traffic calming chicane system, crashed into the local school gates, struck 2 cars £18k damage to one and on their return journey completely removed the steel and glass bus shelter, thankfully no one was at the shelter and to my knowledge nobody else injured. Not the best advert for MB ML however the vehicle in question had of course damage to the front(hanging off) bumper, wings and bonnet intact so maybe a good buy Matt to sell onto Ram Raiders etc.
I'm suprised you managed to find one of these, they seemd to disappear off the road all at once! I had one of these and liked it until I started having injector trouble. It revealed an issue with the head, water was leaking into the injector bolt hole, so was a bit of a risk to start spending further on it. Rust was just starting round the front wheel arch but the rest was tidy.
Hi Matt loved this video! I bought a 2001 270 CDI in March 2018 on a ‘51 Plate ( Jan ‘02) for £400 it’s just done 135000 miles is in a lot better condition than yours! Sailed through its MOT with just 2 advisories ( some corrosion on rear shocks and an oil leak not excessive) strange that as I don’t have to top up any oil between annual services! As for the truck I love it!!!!!!!!
The first car I ever learned how to drive was an ML 350 2004 Special Edition black on black, loved that car very classy, eventually we sold it for a 2004 645ci black on tan. Solid car, pity about the 4 speed box but it works
I'm now 100% convinced that you have turned in to the UK version of Tyler Hoover of Hoovie's Garage with all the 'Hoopties' you've been buying lately Matt. 🤣 (keep it up)
He does watch Hoovie's Garage because I love how he says it in "real" English (not 'Murican English) in one of his earlier videos 👍🏻
Totally getting this nostalgia Matt. I still like MLs like I do all Range Rovers. They look great in Mercedes Silver
Hang On:
Radio 4 = *
Matching Tyres = *
Receipts complete with folder = *
Shes been looked after.
That’s what I thought
Love the ML I had right hand drive import from Germany 350 petrol you are so right solid tank like a joy to drive wish I’d not sold mine I would get back in one (not that one) any time but you cannot find them
You forgot to mention the 350 petrol which was the size I had on an 04 plate and was the best thing about it..!
Paint and interior finish was typical Merc crap for early 2000s but engine pulled well and was really reliable, easily the best engine.!
Ive had a few w163, they are great trucks and value for money. Facelift is a
Million miles ahead of pre facelift, last one a I had was a black edition with all options, 270cdi engines are fantastic
Black edition came fully loaded with black wood and white stitching on the leather. lovely cars in the day. I felt the new gem ml was a massive disappointment. Terrible interiors and awful reliability.
One of my bugbears in cars is the front bumpers sagging and a big gap between the bumper and body.
We had the identical spec and it was a wonderful family wagon but agree about the diesel... what we saved in fuel we spent on repairs. Injectors mainly but the drive was some how a bit special and it was quite solid albeit the exact same rust issues but al2ays felt solid.. great review Matt and agree with the nostalgia... I still have the spare number plate hanging in the garage!,
Unfortunately a lot have rusted away or have not just been maintained. Funny I have a soft spot for the ML and always tempted to get one as a weekend drive. ML550 maybe??
Shame about the rust
In Aus we don't have same issue.
Found a 2001 ML 270 with 120000 km om the clock for A$4k.
New head and rear lights, colour match the naff bumpers, 2nd hand nudge bar, chrome bling, spit and polish and now looks like new - sensors are a bit of an issue with these old gals - but remediable!
I had a 99 ML430 when I lived in the USA from 2000 to 2004. The 4.3 V8 in the ML was smooth as. Being as sad as you, I bought a cheap P38 on a YA VIN and my wife had the ML430. We drove all over the US in the P38 which didn't miss a beat.
We’ve got the same taste in cars 😂 what do you drive now?
Long reply, sorry. I am in Perth Australia, our roads are quite different to the UK. Over the last 3 years I had an F80 M3 Comp + a 5.0 V8 L320 RR Sport (great car). I thought I wanted one car instead of 2 (wrong) so i traded both for a new 2018 RR Sport V8 SC. I sold it back to the dealer after 10 months because it wanted to live in the dealer's workshop rather than with me. I bought another F80 M3. But divorce and a new financial reality means I need max bang for my dollar so I now have a manual Mustang GT 5.0 and, I absolutely love it, windows down on a summer day, its hard to beat. A 2012 Audi A4 Allroad TDI is my daily thrasher. I drive it hard, it is serviced every 6 months and with 80k miles, everything works perfectly, although its due for a change out in 2022.
And this is one of the many reasons why I love this channel!
Matt I bought a 2013 250 ML 10 weeks ago to use over winter it looks similar to a GLe as you will know, it's okay I will probably sell it in March
Whew! I was hoping all the way through that you wouldn't buy it in the end. Given this is a "prestige" car, and given the number of bills and the condition of it, having cost over £40K new, it is amazing that anyone thinks that these are top drawer cars. My Puma is older, worth about the same, half the miles, the engine is turbine smooth, not like an unsilenced pneumatic road drill, a tiny bit of rust around the usual rear wheel arches, no mechanical bills other than a fuel pump in its life. I am not sure what prestige relates to, it certainly it isn't the ownership experience or reliability or quality of the parts or bodywork. Is it time to review what prestige really means? Great video, interesting choice of car.
If this had been a 2003 Suzuki Ignis(!) it would be rust free and running reliably! (with minimal maintenance...) I know this for a fact..!!
I like this car yes I would buy this car l like the shape of it. Good solid Merc
Video was your usual good and friendly way you presented it
Kevin
Just brought back so many memories of living in Spain at the time and in the exact Marino when Spain won the World Cup and the euros my Boss had exactly the same car but the AMG version
Nearly bought one a few years back on an 08 plate...bought a 59 plate Vauxhall Antara instead..........Nothing but trouble..changed it for a 14 plate Insignia...nothing but trouble..that was the end of modern car ownership for me
I had a 2002 ML320 as my first car and I have very fond memories driving it around all over the UK. I spent so much money on fuel during that time; I think I averaged about 15 mpg!
You probably had the computer set to US gallons about 20% difference. My ML500 does a good 25 mpg on a long run. Very acceptable.
I had a ml 350 04 plate for 9 years I can categorically say it was the most reliable car I've ever owned it never let me down never not started never broke down such a good car and it always passed its MOT enough said. 😁
Recommendations for a 4WD/AWD Petrol SUV newer than 2008 under £4,000.
I remember never having one and being so unimpressed until the internet came about....Now I'm sooooo unhappy I never had one ......Greast stuff keep them coming :-)
I had a ML450 very powerful and a super Drive however it was such a money pit, fuel, repairs ,Air Suspension etc etc but a great car and miss the ride and the view it was fully loaded 2 london owners from new Mine was a 58 and miss it during these winter months.
Loved my 2004 ML 350 although terrible on fuel. Managed to get Merc to sort most of the rust even at 5 years old
Looks like a lot of hard work ahead Matt with low profit at the end. I’d be happy to see what happens
No Tomorrow - Orson, fantastic shout 😂
I cant believe you paid £1000 for that as my old Mitsubishi Colt from 2007 with 100 thousand on the clock cost me a grand and it aint no Mercedes , i see the rust on the ML but that would only cost a few hundred to weld and the tailgate rust is not an MOT failure as its not a vital component to the car ,anyway please can you share where you get these bargains from ? i am guessing BCA ?
My grandma owned one of these for a while. It was the 270 CDI.
Its a great car if you take care of it properly its a 1kk km engine and invictus transmission car!
I've had a 2001 270 and 2003 500. The 500 was a beautiful car, (in 2012). I know what you mean about the smell of interior and gear selector. They're shit in some respects but I do love them
So the ml has had decent money spent on it, my 130000 mile Rav4 has had nothing but service items and still drives good as new.
I like these ML
A 2003 should be a much better car then the first ones from 1997 / 1998.
Great spec & 7 Seats
Hopefully the mechanicals are ok
It’s a diesel, and only 105,000 miles…
Tidy up the bodywork and hopefully make a quid out of it
Good luck. 👍
It was a status symbol back in the day...it still looks beautiful now. 😍
You need another project car like the Government need another scandal 🤣
Haha I know. I like being busy though
Ah.. do still remember the sounds from my childhoods cars (Ford Taunus/Cortina) the indicators ticking the whining from the gearbox, and for some reasons the first car I got was also a Taunus 2.0.. But on topic, shame on Mercedes for lousy rust proofing on the early 2000 models in general. What did they think about??
I’ve done 400k in my ml 430 never missed a beat highly recommended
I was onboard until you mentioned the musical travesty that was dad-rock shitter's Orson "no tomorrow"
Funny , slight rust doesn’t bother me on budget cars. I guess I grew up in in an era where it was commonplace on all cars over a few years old.
Have to agree - the rust on that Merc is superficial and, let's face it, the car is over 18 years old. My old man had an Austin Cambridge - its jacking points couldn't support the car when it was 6 years old.
Matt I was literally going to do this exact same thing on Monday buy a ML for £1000!
Weird you say that about regs, Iv noticed tons of BMWs always seem to be YK registered
I think their main office is up there. Thorne I think
You'll get hung in saddleworth for that Mat! Greenfield OLDHAM bloody hell they won't like that
A great purchasing adventure and curious to learn what you'll do with the car. Thank you.
Absolutely miss my ml320 - u are inspiring me to buy one actually
This made me remember my dads old X5 in 2004 and the subsequent downgrade he bought in 2007…a plasticky X3 😒
Looking forward to the video detailing the mechanics report....
Mate what can I say…. You have good taste in suv….I am also considering getting a gle 400 next lol….yup I don’t do public either…:-p
Nice video again! I'm looking for a budget priced 4x4 with 7 seat capability, and I've lifted the W163 back into my candidates. I tested one couple of years ago, a reasonable mileage ML320 to be precise, and there was a lot of things I liked in it. It was spacious, the stadium seating was fun and boot was also huge. I even loved the charmingly quaint interior, and compared to today's trendy low-slung crossovers, the W163 really felt like SUV should. But... I was seriously worried about the handling, because the steering was dangerously vague (about zero feedback) and the suspension was really floaty. For example changing lanes made the car lurch dramatically. I'm curious if this was typical to ML320 with softer suspension setup, or does the ML270 handle more "European" way? And how would the ML350 with the 3.7 V6 petrol sit in this tree?
You were mighty fast recognizing Blair's voice!!🤣🤣🤣
Very distinctive voice unfortunately
Another great video, I love your cheap car videos. If it was me, I would prefer the R class for £1k, I have always had a soft spot for weird and unusual
I owned 2 ml55 amgs at the same time absolute monsters great cars as usual wish I had kept at least 1 of them🤔
Another great review Matt of a not so great car, weren't these early ML's made in the USofA ?
Could you please explain if the Special edition ML350 3.7L might be worthy purchase, or are they just a bad time? Highly appreciate your videos, keep up the good work :D
That's a great engine. That car can last as long as you want as long as its not rusted. You're not going to get any more reliable engine/trans combo than that from any other brand on the market. Just check the regular things as when you buy any used car.
My first wife had one of these at the same time I had a Jeep Cherokee (KJ - Liberty in USA). The Mercedes diesel was an utter bastard, something always wrong with it & ‘er indoors bought it on tne basis it had heated memory seats, sar nav and yes you could open the back windows from the drivers seat… I guess divorce was inevitable for various other reasons but the Jeep didnt help matters - it cost 1/2 as much to buy, had all the same stuff, heated memory seats, sat nav, and you could open the back windows from the drivers seat AND engage tne child locks - it never ever failed and to date is rust free (yeah that is weird). Yup, the 3.7l Petrol V6 is still thirsty after 262,000 miles but it has never missed a beat and has only had biannual servicing - plus the usual tyres, brake rotors and pads etc.. Only issue is the terrible thirst and at least thats payable in 65 litre instalments. Tne KJ is tne same floorpan as the Mercedes ML and mine was made in Austria - at the time Chrysler Jeep was owned by Mercedes !
What a tractor how could anyone take to such a nail😮
You’re lucky, I would have to find a Lada 1200 estate or a Proton to match my dad’s choices!
For the first 20 secs I thought the interior held up amazing well. Then realized that's not the ML😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You're definitely romanticizing this one but its still a good purchase at £1000. These still sell really well in london because its a cheap tractor. However all of them are in dog poor condition. I looked at a few E270's of the same generation, nearly managed to nab one for £1500 with genuine brabus wheels and AMG exhaust tips, but it fell through. I wish more 5 cylinder diesels existed other than mercs and volvos. Also I would like to see JayEmm hurling it around and insulting it. But all this being said I think that I would really enjoy driving something like this, so I totally get it even if others don't!
I had the w163 (the model in this video) and I now have the w164. The w163 was possibly the worst car I've ever had. Drove poorly, cost a fortune to run and was built by people who really didn’t know how to build cars. And didn’t care that they didn’t know. The w164 on the other hand is a fantastic car. Now 16 years old, still going very strong and I’ve no idea what to replace it with when it eventually dies. It does everything so well.
I'd get another W164 if I were you. They're the sweet spot. The previous generation was poorly built, there's too much tech that could go wrong in the newer ones.
The w163 is more of a truck than the w164. But is going to outlast it also as long as it doesnt rust away. Also its better off road. So depends on what you want. If its more of a family car then go for the 164.
Martin Svensson
The build quality of the w163 was appalling though. Bits literally came off in my hand, and it rusted before my very eyes. It was better off-road than my w164 though, I’ll give it that. I tow a boat and I’ve got stuck in wet fields a couple of times with it hooked up to my w164. It’s a shame it doesn’t have a locking centre diff, that’s probably the only thing I’d change about the car tbh. I think one was an option, but I’ve never seen one with it fitted for sale.
@@kristoffscuba5466 Yes, I know at least the pre facelift had some bad interior parts.
I think you could get the w164 with an off road package that included a diff lock. But I think that was only an option in Europe..
The w163 never had diff locks either. But it could apply the brakes much harder due to the standard low range.
I wish D was Derby. We have F as our plates. Forest and networks. Oh the shame🤦♂️being associated with Nottingham Forest🤣
mad world the annual road tax is a third of the cost of the car
M8 i like your honesty in your vids, they help a novice like me what to look an listen for so thanks for that. Shame about the Merc who did the touch ups on it Stevie Wonder lol?.
Love em. Merry Christmas
Nice, btw can you do a video review on the Merc GLE coupe, thanks.
Hello again, Matt I have Nokia phone to fit your Merc ML, they are still great as just a 'phone', Regards, RichardA.
Another good video. I'm thinking Marple area?
Loved the styling of them when they were in their prime. Great video as always 👌 don't think I'll be buying a raffle ticket for this one tho lol
My bmw 520d g30 is EN67 and yes it’s an Essex car 😂😂 .
Here is a sad one bought a Mercedes c200 estate 2011 model bought it drove 30 miles home and smoke came up so pulled up open the bonnet took of the oil cap and I see it’s Creamy now I know it’s the head gasket so took it down to my local garage he says to busy to do the job😢
I’m in Norfolk any good mechanics in Norfolk???
I have to say that this is one of the few times I've seen one of these videos of yours and not immediately wanted one of the cars you present, too much rust for my ocd .
Shed , let it go Matt, ( as I have no doubt you have )
Love how you find these cars in the woods 😂
I had one of those ML350 petrol
