- The Ferrari 355 represents a turn in the Ferrari line-up, introducing the paddle shift gearbox to their mid-engine cars. We got to spend a short time with this pristine regularly driven 355 F1 on an extremely tight road in the Bay area. It left us wanting more drive time, and fear of the maintenance.

I love his license plate. i own a 355 and have had the engine out twice. done it all myself, its not too bad at all. The car is made to be able to remove the rear subframe rather easily. If you are resourceful and have quality tools, and knowledge working on this car is no different than any other sports car of the same era. To own one you have to either know what your doing yourself and take the time to LEARN, or have the money to mindlessly hand it over to someone you trust.
As myself a longtime career mechanic...I intend to own one of these, soon. It is those who don't feel "comfortable", are unsure working on cars, who are the ones paying the big monies. It is not rocket-science, but I guess it seems so to "outsiders"...to those of us "in the know", it is rather straight-forward.
Great, when you do it yourself - on my F355 I had three belt changes - and the next in 2023

I saw a f40 today on a trailer getting taken somewhere that's what kinda brought me here watching these vids. There is one for sale here in New Zealand (i think its the same one?) for a insane amount 1.6 mil NZ so amount 1.4mil US.
My all time favorite Ferrari design. Shame there's no gated shifter in that one.

My friend has an F355 Spider and I agree with pretty much everything you guys said. The manual definitely seems like the way to go, and it sounds incredible! So I would actually argue that the convertible is the way to go so you can really enjoy the engine note. I have a GTR and as you pointed out it is waaaaay faster, but just being in the 355 in isolation is a very enjoyable experience and feels quick.
One of my all-time favorites since it was a current model. I only prefer the 6-speed manual and a challenge rear mesh.

I just picked up a Mk4 supra we imported from Japan to sell, never driven one before, had all the other supras, its not so much about how fast it is, or isn't, or the interior, its about appreciating the car for the time that it existed in, and just looking at the fantastic styling! F355 engine note, wow!
Great car. Ive had my manual F355 for 11years now and its done 27k miles. I can't bring myself to sell it. Ferrari stopped making open gate manual cars a long time ago. Shame, because they are wonderful. The feel, the sound, still very special.

although the 355 f1 is the most affordable automobile of the legendary italian auto maker's line-up, it's still, and very much, A FERRARI!!
What is the visual difference between the 348 and 355? I hear this all the time, it seems so silly. The 348 was designed by Leo Fioravanti, Ferrari's greatest designer. He stopped working for Ferrari in the early 90's after being at Pininfarina for nearly 30 years. He designed practically every 70's and 80's Ferrari, including the Dino and the Daytona. The 348 was the last car he designed, and the 355 (although he was not involved with it) is just a light restyling.
Aside from the roof which is dictated by the structure and is generally unchanged for light refreshes, every single exterior component is different. Of course, the internal central frame is identical and the subframes (i.e. engine cradle) are different. I believe all of the hard structural mounting points are the same.
Yamaha designed the 5 valve head that's why it's revs hard and sounds so amazing..my 2nd favourite Ferrari after 288 GTO
Oh wow, never expected to see a specific car I know on this channel. Since the filming of the video, the owner has actually sold this car and bought an Alfa 4C. IIRC, it went for $60k on Bring a Trailer.

PEOPLE my age, THAT is 50 years old and over consider the 355 the last of the "real" Ferrari's with gated shift gear box. Many Ferrari and sports car fans prefer the manual gear boxes to today's mindless PDK (paddle) technology

Yes, I would. I'm really not a Ferrari fanboy but the 355 has always been one of my absolute favorite cars. Hoping to find a driver's example and then buy an engine hoist. Engine out requirements will probably keep the values depressed enough for a while. That's my hope. 😉

288GTO, 512TR, and 575M guy myself, but of course I'm on a miata budget. Car looks good, sounds good, amd auto or not, will still draw a crowd at the local coffee place or grocery store. More noises clips please.
Love the car and color combo but love it even more if it was a SPIDER gated shifter or F1is like choosing between an Almond Joy or a Mounds for me sometimes I feel like a nut sometimes I don’t...
The F355 GTS has the same lines as the berlinetta. You can drive it open and can hear the full sound much better - believe me, you will regret it when you have a berlinetta....
Fair enough. My point is its worth considering which way values are likely to go when looking for your first Ferrari if money is a concern. I just love the cars, but still kick myself for not buying a Dino when they were £60k
The only thing missing on this beautiful F355 is a Capristo exhaust system.
C. Bøgelund It has a Tubi which sounds about 80% as loud as the Capristo. Both sound good in slightly different ways.

This has been my dream Ferrari since a kid. Red with tan leather too. Manual though, the only way an older Ferrari could/should be enjoyed. Just imo
I would do just about anything to own a 355 hard top W/ the manual though, I heard a 355F1 pulling out of a parking lot and that F1 trans was not liking the slow pace.
As I recall, this was the last Pininfarina-designed Ferrari...which is a shame. No subsequent Ferrari has looked even half this good.
The 458, FF and F12 were the last Ferraris designed by Pininfarina, in that order. Their replacements were styled in-house, although those are all facelifts. The LaFerrari was the first clean-sheet Ferrari design.

This is my all-time favorite supercar!
The timing belts can be changed without taking the engine out however there are other things you may want to do if you take the engine out. Check the belts every year, if cracks or wear (unlikely for either), change the belts, fluids, etc. Every couple times, depending how you drive it, sure, take the engine out. The 6-speed is very easy to maintain (F1 has a couple more parts) and the engine is pretty simple as compared to modern cars. Work is pretty easy, 35%+ of the car is engine bay. The show rate at the BMW dealer is more than the Ferrari Dealer and many parts are cheaper as well. Parts are sometimes harder to come by on a 20 year old car and if they come from Italy, they take a couple weeks instead of a couple hours. Also, the F355 is completely impractical and that's why it's fun. If you like the sound, get one, drive it though a tunnel at 8000+ RPM.
Yes, one of my mechanics prefers to drop the gas tank and lock-swap the belts, especially if he feels the car is already running smooth and he also doesn't like stressing the ECU harnesses with connect/disconnects. This comes down to the philosophy with which you want to maintain the car. Do you want to take the opportunity that the subframe-out gives you, to check all the stuff that's wedged between the subframe and the engine? Do you want to check the cam timing? Or do you want to risk "other problems" coming up, making you remove the engine after all you've already done changing the belts? I think if you have a more comfortable budget, you want to be more conservative and pre-emptively check for potential issues?

Often thought about pulling the trigger and buying one. But I refuse a paddle shifter and the manuals are hard to come by. Also, as the plate says..... "engine out". I love those cars man, but screw that idea lol

I love the 355, but there's probably better choices out there for someone that's looking for a "first Ferrari." The 355 is notoriously expensive to maintain--even relative to other Ferraris. The exhaust manifolds and valve guides also tend to have issues and are VERY expensive to fix. Seeing a $20,000+ service bill for a 355 isn't too uncommon, unfortunately. Still, hearing one at 8,500 RPM, particularly with an aftermarket exhaust, is pretty spectacular.
There is a running joke, you don't get away from a Ferrari service for less than four digits (USD). I wish it were a joke.
Over 10 years my F355 has been the cheapest car I ever owned. It has made money, even with 3 engine out cambelt services. A wonderful thing.
There are running costs and then there is downtime. If you want jump-in-and-drive reliability, a 1990s Ferrari (or a 1990s anything, for that matter) is not for you.
If you can swing the slightly higher prices, the 360 is a reasonable "First Ferrari." It still won't be reliable as something more modern, but the belt service is easier to stomach. Overall running costs won't be cheap, but it will be slightly cheaper than an F355.
My F355 really has been the cheapest car I have ever owned. It has increases in value way more than it has cost to run.

I have one. You don't have to take the engine out to replace the timing belts. You drop the tank. about 6-8 hours depending on how good you are at very basic mechanics. A youtube video can't really reproduce the sound when you are driving it. My other car is so much faster and it's just great but I bought this car for the sound and experience. My car costs me le

This is my favorite of Ferrari's mid-engine V8 line.
The paddle gearboxes ruined the 355, 360, and to some degree the f430. The manual cars are so much better. By the time the 458 rolled around they finally got a perfected the dual clutch
Funny how Americans refer to 3.5 liters as ‘tiny’. These days in Europe, you’d be hard pressed to find a car on the road with even half that capacity.

I find it continually baffling how virtually everyone bashes the 360 when it's simply an improved 355 in almost every way. Easier to service, faster, still sounds incredible, more comfortable, better F1, still as raw, better seating position, more modern appointments.. The 360 is like the Tony Blair of the car world. Everyone seems to dislike it now to some extent, before they even know why..
Manuals are quite more expensive and sought after, I now gated shifters are amazing, but maybe affordability was a criteria for the owner, at least it would be for me if I could get a somewhat affordable used ferrari.

Best ferrari. I'd still take it over a new one. You cannot really use the new ones to their potential. with the 355, you can really string it out and fully experience it on the road.

Ye I only found out recently about the engine service thing which sadly is a who,e heap of money and made this possibly affordable Ferrari 355 out of reach.
Actually, the engine doesn’t need to come out for service, according to Ratarossa (you tuber) anyway. He says he drops the fuel tanks instead. Easier/faster/cheaper. He also has a website.
@@overbuiltlimited would appreciate the link to how you change the cam belt tensioners without dropping the engine. If you don’t do this when you change the belts you risk the new belts slipping. Moral of the story is UA-cam is full of self help videos from people who will cost you a fortune.

You really have to want a car to be willing to write a 10k check to have the belt service done. Other than that, Classic Italian sports cars are very special. Until you drive one you will never understand the what or the why. My favorite classic Italian sports car is the 288 GTO. Sadly I cannot say I have had the pleaser of driving one.
